Chairman’s message
WELCOME TO SUMMER
Bob Bivins
Chairman
As a boy growing up in Clearwater, I remember
waking up in an house with no air conditioning,
traveling to a school without air conditioning
via either a bicycle, car or bus with no air
conditioning, following which I played outside in
the afternoon sun until the time came to return
home. Not that air conditioning was uncommon
or controversial … my parents just could not
afford it. I did not feel deprived though as none of
my friends’ parents couldn’t afford it either. Only
lying in front of a box fan, turned on high and
planted a foot or less from my face, gave relief to
those hot southern nights and sweltering days.
Despite the heat, my parents insisted that us kids play outside.
Not only was it good for us to run, chase make believe bad guys,
and dig for Spanish treasure, but also it tended to tire us out for
bedtime… a benefit for all concerned. Plus, as a result, my friends
and I learned to talk to each other, play well together, work out our
differences, and accept that the sun is the bringer of life rather than
some cruel and unnatural torturer.
Some children today have been raised as much by the internet and
videogames as by their parents. Many youth only want to work or
play inside and have a real aversion to sweat. I recently attempted
to hire a high school student to work on my cattle ranch for $10/
hour. Instead, he accepted a minimum wage job at McDonalds so
he could work in air conditioning. I also have actually observed a
girl texting her friend sitting less than three feet away rather than
talking. It is no wonder that child obesity is on the rise while their
interactive verbal and social skills are on the decline.
We are fortunate in the Brandon area to have a wide variety of
summer activities available to help our kids socialize with their
peers while exercising. Between youth soccer, baseball, swimming,
cycling, canoeing, and other outdoor
activities, the choices can often
seem overwhelming. Even day camp
can be an adventure. For, example,
YMCA Camp Cristina, which has
long featured outdoor activities and
specialty camps, has just opened a
new water slide. Whatever activity
you choose, just be sure your
kids have a chance to be kids the
old fashioned way… with a little dirt, sweat, sunshine, and exercise
included. Indeed, that would be a good summer goal for all of us.

Summertime...
Special Feature
The Right Time to Play, Dance, Act
Summertime often gives us a chance to unwind, kick back and relax. It’s the time of year when we
recharge our batteries by lounging on or near one of our area’s many great lakes or beaches, take
in a big screen blockbuster, or road-trip it on a family vacation. However for some, summertime is
the time to kick it in gear!
Many of us take the “lull” between June and September and crank it up. Even though temps
rise, staying active seems to become even more important for many. We admit beachwear often
motivates some, but, by and large, summer energizes our youthfulness to come out and play. This
time of year annually impacts the bottom lines of area businesses that cater to sports enthusiasts
and those that may satisfy people seeking various forms of active entertainment (dance and music
studios, and theatre).
So what local businesses have mastered helping clients take strokes off their game or master
that pirouette? How have they carved their niche? How can you find the health club or studio
best for you? To learn about some of the specialty companies that will help you stay active this
summer, we asked fellow Chamber members to tell us about their companies, their impact on the
community as a whole and trends that we, as consumers should be aware of.

craig hamet, PGA, General manager/golf director
What trends do you see within your industry
and how have your adapted to either meet
your business needs and/or your clients’
needs?
The golf industry is not unlike many other
businesses. Families’ discretionary funds
available for leisure time activities have become
much more limited. We feel that by providing
exceptional value and exceeding customers’
expectations on a daily basis we can reassure
members that they have made the right decision
by choosing River Hills Country Club.
How does your niche industry impact
the overall Brandon community – both
altruistically and economically?
We feel that we provide an excellent value
for someone looking to join a Country Club
and have the ability to use the club for both
business and personal satisfactions. Being a
part of a large management group affords our
members the opportunity to have access to
40 other clubs throughout the entire country.
Joining River Hills Country Club offers reciprocity
with many different clubs and allows for a greater
value to all of our members.
What are the important factors for area
residents, businesses and businesspeople to
thoroughly research prior to “jumping in” to
purchases and contracts within your industry?
Quite simply, River Hills Country Club is the club
in Brandon to choose for weddings, parties or
any kind of social event. The atmosphere and
amenities are very unique. Combined with service
oriented staff and dedicated professionals, we
pride ourselves in exceeding the expectations of
our members and guests. Come experience the
difference!
River Hills Country Club has been a Chamber

Dawn Galia, Executive Director
What trends do you see within your industry
and how have you adapted to either meet
your business needs and/or your clients’
needs?
Center Place’s main focus during the summer
months are our children’s workshops. A
majority of our adult workshops are put on hold
for the summer months to accommodate more
choices for our children. We offer an eclectic
variety of children’s workshops, including
drawing, painting, pottery, recycle art, mad
science, charm & etiquette, photography and
many more. We also offer adult art workshops.
Center Place has a unique partnership with the
Brandon Regional Library. Every Monday in the
Month of July, The Brandon Regional Library

Annual Holiday Tea and many more. Center Place is a

Laura Randall-Simon
VP of Enrollment &
Marketing
I am excited to introduce our newest staff member -- although the word “introduce”
may not be totally applicable since many of you know this person already. Eager yet
to know who it is?!
Tammy C. Bracewell
President & CEO
In mid-August, Laura Randall-Simon will be joining our staff as the Vice President of
Enrollment & Marketing and we are eagerly awaiting her arrival!
Laura will be assuming the position that has been held by Tricia Campbell, who will be
joining the Engagement & Programming Department in the role of Director of Member
Programming . Tricia, who joined our staff in 2007, is excited to utilize the experience
that she gained in her prior role at the Chamber, along with her extensive experience in
the hospitality industry, to further advance the events and programs that our members
enjoy and utilize to promote their businesses.
Laura’s relationship-building, marketing skills and her experience with The Tampa Bay
Times -- as well as the knowledge that she gained in her prior roles -- will definitely
be an asset to the Chamber and to our members and advertisers.
I am looking forward to helping both Laura and Tricia settle into their new roles and I
hope that you will join me in congratulating and wishing both of them much success.
Tammy
How does your niche industry impact the overall
Brandon community – both altruistically and
economically?
Center Place impacts the community, consumers,
environment and public sphere in many different ways,
both altruistically and economically. We provide affordable
quality artistic programming for children and adults, FREE
community events - Chalk Walk, Gallery Hop, Halloween
Horribles Parade, Christmas Tree Lighting and Santa’s
Holiday Workshop, low-cost educational theatrical
performances for the public schools, private schools,
daycares and our Brandon families, employment for local
fine art professionals, affordable facility rental for parties,
weddings, graduations, etc., a gallery for local professional
artists to exhibit on a monthly basis, many local civic
organizations host their events at Center Place, our Grand
Room serves as a “town hall” when the community has
specific issues to address and we provide a cultural center
for visual and performing arts. Last season, we were
able to provide Hillsborough County fifty-one theatrical
productions with an attendance of approximately 15,000
children and adults. Center Place also houses an historical
collection of photographs that portray the Greater Brandon
area from the 1890’s through the 1960’s. The photos are
made available for public viewing when they are exhibited
once a year in the Mook Gallery.

What are the important factors for area residents, businesses and businesspeople to thoroughly
research prior to “jumping in” to purchases and contracts within your industry?
We are here to serve the community in many capacities. The library/cultural center is unique in
being the first documented facility of this type in Florida, made possible through the cooperation of
the private sector and the county government. Sharing a building with the County Library enhances
Center Place’s ability to expand its programs to meet the cultural demands of our surrounding
communities. Center Place was created by the community, for the community, to engage the
community at all levels, promoting the arts in Eastern Hillsborough County since 1976.
Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association has been a Chamber member since 1981. It is located
at 619 Vonderburg Dr., Suite B, Brandon, Florida 33511. Contact the company at (813) 685-8888

Brandon School of Dance Arts
Teresa Paleveda-Oscher, Owner/Director
What trends do you see within your industry and how have you adapted to either meet your
business needs and/or your clients’ needs?
The dance studio business has been growing steadily in the Brandon Area for the last few years. We have seen more serious dancers looking for more than just recreational training. Of late our
dancers have been seeking high quality teachers who can develop their skills. In response we
have added additional technique classes and extended the times for these important classes. Our
faculty is highly trained to cater to our student’s increasing demand for a better dance education.
How does your niche industry impact the overall Brandon community – both altruistically and
economically?
The Arts always add to the overall appeal to the community. At BSDA we encourage our dancers
to participate in local events as we “give back” to the community in the best way we know how....
through dance.
What are the important factors for area residents, businesses and businesspeople to thoroughly
research prior to “jumping in” to purchases and contracts within your industry?
I think it is very important for parents to research the school before enrolling. Often parents select
the studio closest in proximity to their homes which is not often the best choice. Understand
your child’s level of interest in dance first, then visit all the area’s studios before making a

Name: Janine B. Nickerson
Title and Company/Organization:
Vice President/The Community Roundtable
Nature of Business/Organization:
The organization’s signature event is Florida’s largest
Independence Day Parade. This family tradition is an
important part of America’s Birthday celebration for
Brandon area residents. The Community Roundtable
supports local charities through donations and volunteers.
Years with Company/Organization:
As a judge for the Parade in 1999, I became aware of the importance of the
Roundtable’s influence in the community. I was invited to be a trustee in
2000, and have served as the VP for the past 6 years.
Years in Greater Brandon area:
My husband and I moved to Brandon in 1976. The area was small, so
small that Lakewood Drive had not been extended south across SR 60.
The first stop light was at Zayre’s, now the plaza that houses the Burlington
Coat Factory and Publix. I still think about the day I looked out my kitchen
window to find a cow in my back yard. No doubt any more, Brandon was
a rural area. We raised our children here and are proud to be a part of this
amazing community.
What is unique or special about your business/organization and the
products and services you offer?
The Community Roundtable began in 1957 as a resource for area charities.
We kept a calendar of events and our members were the presidents of their
non profit. Having a centralized calendar ensured that fundraisers were held
on different dates which kept the contributions available to all. The Honorary
Mayor’s Race has been in existence since 1959. Nat Storms was our first
raising $500 and promising a “Pork Chop in Every Pot”. This year, new
Honorary Mayor, Gay Lynn Love collected over $23,000. Each mayor
selects up to three charities to receive their donations.
In addition, we honor a volunteer with the Alice B. Tompkins Award,
we name a Non Profit of the Year, we select a recipient for the Maureen
Krzanowski Scholarship, and we host our Community Affairs Dinner.
In October, the Roundtable partners with Center Place to offer the Cards for
Troops project. Holiday cards are designed, assembled, and mailed to our
troops in the war zone. The inside of the cards are blank so that the soldiers
can send a beautiful card with their personal message to their loved ones at
home.
What markets do you serve?
We limit the distribution of donations to the Brandon Area. So many worthy
501 (c) (3) organizations are in need and one of our goals is to maintain
funding to people in this community.
What are your business challenges and successes?
The Non Profit of the Year receives $500, a trophy, a portion of the proceeds
from our events, and their volunteers ride on the Roundtable float in the
Fourth of July Parade. As with many other charitable groups, fundraising
can be a challenge. However, we are exploring other avenues in which to
support the community.

Ambassador of the month
Name: Alex Miranda
Title & Company: General Manager @ VSI
Tampa Flames
What is unique and/or interesting about
your business?
I think the most interesting thing about our
company is the public’s unawareness to our
existence. Granted we are a relatively new
company in the area, soccer has not been
as popular as all the other major sports in our country. So to
me, I know a lot about our industry, but to everyone else, soccer
is not well known, so I spend a lot of time getting the community
up to speed about our organization.
What are your business challenges & successes?
My business’s biggest challenge is competing with all the other
sports organizations and all the other things to do as a source
of entertainment. We are in a large market and we have to
compete with the Rays, Lightning, Buccaneers for family the
entertainment dollar. So getting awareness out that we are a
cheap, yet very entertaining family outing is a big challenge for
me.
How long have you been a Chamber Ambassador? What do
you enjoy most from serving as an Ambassador and why?
I have been an Ambassador for about 18 months and the best
part about serving as an Ambassador is meeting new chamber
members, learning about their businesses and connecting them
with others.
Who is the most influential person in your life and why?
The most influential person in my life is God. By serving him
first and following his word, I know everything else will be taken
care of. I’m not in control of my future, he guides me every day.

My only other interest and hobbies outside my business would
be spending time with my wife and kids and then more soccer. I
love the sport. I am active in adult leagues, I coach two highly
competitive teams, and it’s probably the only thing I watch on tv,
plus I know work in it full time, can’t get any better!

Working together
we can create 116,000 jobs across Tampa Bay
Your company is one of 116,000 employers in the Tampa Bay
area. If we each hire one additional person, we’ll put 116,000
Tampa Bay residents back to work and start a chain of events
that could positively impact our local economy. Imagine if
116,000 businesses each hired just one new person. Have you
done your part? Join this Bay area initiative to get our neighbors
back on their feet by getting them back to work. When you hire
for a new position, let us know by submitting your information
to: http://www2.bizjournals.com/tampabay/reports/employ-1.
You’ll be featured as a hiring company on this website and possibly in the Tampa Bay Business Journal. Thank you for your
support!

Engaging Retail’s Tina Praino Featured on Business REINVENTION
Kudos to Engaging Retail’s Tina Praino who was a special guest
during Business REINVENTION with Nancy Lin’s live podcast that
aired worldwide July 23. Praino took part in “Taking Control of the
Retail Future,” providing insight about ‘Showrooming’ and omnichannel integration, price optimization, ‘Just In Time’ inventory
control, and how retailers should shift their thought processes to
regain traction that has been lost to either the down turn in the
economy or the rapid influx of online retailers. 3.5 million listeners
tune in to the show that is aired weekly by VoiceAmerica!

A Gracious Old Glory Gift
The Chamber would like to thank Board Chair Bob Bivins, of Bivins &
Henenway, P.A., for donating the brand new American Flag that is now
proudly flying atop our flag pole in front of our offices on Pauls Drive!
Thanks, Bob for your gracious gift. Old Glory never looked better!
In Memoriam
The Board of Directors and staff of the Chamber extend our heartfelt
sympathy to the family of Glenn Cross, a former Board member, who
lost his life in an automobile accident in North Carolina. Glenn was a
visionary whose projects included the FishHawk Ranch development.
