PHALABORWA HERALD Friday July 18, 2014 NEWS 3 Half naked man found dead KILLED: A mob killed two young men at Mashishimale Village on Sunday afternoon. Men stoned to death TSAKANI MATHEBULA [email protected] Two men were assaulted and stoned to death by an angry mob of villagers who accused them of being responsible for the death of a 57 year old man at Tshubje village at Mashishimale on Sunday. The incident took place at around 12:00, after members of the community turned on three young men they accuse of terrorizing the community with crime as well as being responsible for the death of 57 year old Piet Mathebula of a Phatamashako village. According to the police spokesperson in the province, Colonel Ronnel Otto, the body of Mathebula was found lying next to the road last Monday. The cause of death is not yet known and the post mortem results are still being awaited. ‘On Sunday afternoon members of the community mobilized and overpowered Lerato Malesa (28) and Tumi Monyela (29). They were severely assaulted and stoned and died on the scene,’ said Otto. She further said that the police were called and when they arrived on the scene two vehicles were damaged by stone throwing. According to a community member who refused to be named, the three young men used to wear dresses and rob people around the village. ‘They robbed another man on Saturday and when he recognized them, he then told the other community members. We searched for these men and found them in possession of a cellphone and a wallet of the man who was robbed the previous day,’ said a community member. According to an eyewitness, the mob allegedly tied the men’s hands and feet before assaulting them with various objects, including stones and wooden sticks. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident at the time of going to press, but the police mentioned that investigations are underway. Members of the Public Order Policing Unit have been deployed in the area for patrols and prevention of further such incidents. The families of the young men were overwhelmed with grief when Phalaborwa Herald interviewed them, they could not talk as they were still disturbed and in shock. A 59 year old man was found dead at Mashishimale Phatamashako village on the road next to the river on Tuesday. According to Namakgale police spokesperson, Constable Lucy Sekgotodi, it is alleged that Piet Mathebula left home on Monday morning and never returned. ‘The deceased was found half naked, his pants, jersey, shirt and shoes had been removed and were scattered around the place,’ said Sekgotodi. He further said that the body of Mathebula was taken to the mortuary for a postmortem to determine the cause of death. And then the community took the law in to their own hands. She was continuously spotted on the main road between Palabora Copper and the SPCA says Kerry Gerber. The SPCA has been feeding her and giving her water as to get her used to them. Gerber said the dog was scared of people and would run away. Finally one of the SPCA volunteers, Hendrik du Plessis, managed to catch her last week and she is currently at the SPCA under assessment. Gerber says they named her “Hope” and will put her up for adoption soon. SAVED BOERBOEL: Hendrik du Plessis with the Boerboel that is now under assessment at the SPCA. The sentencing of Ephraim Bila and Ndombama Salvatore Nkuna, arrested in 2013, were applauded by SANparks. Both were sentenced to 10 years for killing a rhino in the Kruger National Park (KNP), four years for trespassing and carrying out a restricted activity in a restricted area, and six years for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The 10- and the four year sentences would run concurrently. Abe Sibiya, Acting Chief Exexcutive Officer of SANparks commended the courts for imposing the long jail terms. “We are happy that the courts have rewarded the hard work done by the rangers, our Environmental Crime Investigative Unit and South African Police. This sentence will certainly make potential poachers think twice, before crossing the fence to plunder our natural heritage. It will also help to lift the morale of men and women in uniform who are in trenches fighting this scourge of rhino poaching”, Sibiya said. The number of rhino poached since the start of 2014 has increased to 558, with 157 people arrested for rhino poaching. The KNP continues to bear the grunt. Since January, 351 rhino’s have been poached in the KNP. “We are resolute in our determination to win this war that is being waged by greedy individuals. These assets belong to the South African people and we are prepared to ensure their future existence as mandated”, concluded Sibiya SPCA removes dogs after complaints During April this year the Phalaborwa SPCA received the first of many complaints regarding a dog that appeared to be aggressive and continuously out of the owner’s yard. It was also regularly being beaten by the owner. Other dogs living on the property were also mistreated. ‘On Wednesday morning, July 9 we again received several complaints regarding the owner beating his animals said the SPCA. ‘ After verbal warnings (first, second & final), the Phalaborwa SPCA then obtained a warrant to remove the dogs under “The Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962” together with Regulation 468. The Phalaborwa SPCA is opening a case against the owner of the dogs for animal cruelty. The Phalaborwa SPCA would kindly like to caution members of the public to adhere to their warnings and to take them seriously. ‘The SPCA’s main aim is to prevent cruelty to animals (To Speak For Those Who Can’t Speak For Themselves), and have the law fully behind us and we will not be afraid to use it when necessary.’ 7 8 CLASSIFIEDS PHALABORWA HERALD Friday July 18, 2014 classified 0000 NOTICES 0007 EMPLOYMENT Begin your @ home career TODAY! According to the Government Gazette 37815 published on July 10, the newly incorporated roads will now be under the management of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL). SANRAL’s General Manager of Communications, Vusi Mona, explained that the term “national road” is frequently used to refer to a national route, but technically, a “national road” is any road maintained by SANRAL and need not necessarily form part of the national route. Mona said that as a state owned entity, SANRAL’s mandate has always been the management, maintenance and development of South Africa’s national road network. “The incorporation of these roads serves as testament that SANRAL has been doing outstanding work in the 19 704 km of roads that we currently maintain. Of this, 84% are non-toll roads, 15% toll and 1% GFIP (otherwise known as e-toll). Ninety-nine percent of our portfolio is uncontested and all is well with it,” said Mona. He said during the same reporting period, SANRAL spent more than R3.2 million directly on toll roads and almost R9,5 million on its non-toll network.
