Nuwe belastings
‘n groot klug
Die nuwe munisipale tariewe saam
met die implementasie van die nuwe
eiendomswaardasies het verlede week
huiseienaars se bloed laat kook toe hulle hul
vergelyking nie,” voeg Kriel by.
“My eie huis se belastings het R642 per
Loekie oorlede
Loekie Rohrbeck (49) is 4 Augustus
oorlede na hy sy winkel beskerm het
tydens die onluste.
Hy het langs sy winkel wat teen aan
die Boelang gemeenskap geleë is, in die
pad inmekaar gesak en is aan ‘n beroerte
dood. Sy seun, Pastoor Carel Rohrbeck
die begrafnis waargeneem. Verskeie lede
van die gemeenskap het die begrafnis
bygewoon.
Hy laat sy vrou, Cecile, ‘n seun Carel
(26) en dogter Marlene (24) agter.
PILAAR VAN DIE GEMEENSKAP: Loekie
Rohrbeck (49) is op 4 Augustus oorlede.
ONKONSEKWENT: Hierdie eiendom met ‘n aantal wooneenhede en ‘n normale grooƩe woonhuis is
vir slegs R700 000 gewaardeer.

Residents briefed: LeŌ is Economic Development Deputy Minister Madala Masuku, Centre BPM Mayor Anah Sono and right is LEDET MEC Seaparo SekoaƟ and in the background is BPM Speaker and Chief
Whip David Maake and Lucky Mohlala and ANC Limpopo Secretary Nocks Seabi.
Phala briefed regarding proposed steelplant
The Industrial Development Corporation
of South Africa (IDC) together with the
Deputy Minister of Economic Development
have briefed the Ba-Phalaborwa community
about the status of the proposed steel plant
project in South Africa during a follow up
meeting last week Friday at Foskor Moshate
offices.
The meeting is a result of an
understanding reached last two weeks ago
between members of the Ba-Phalaborwa
Community Forum, Limpopo Department of
Economic Development, Environment and
Tourism, National Union of Mineworkers
(NUM), COSATU and the local mining
companies that the IDC should provide
clarification details regarding the project.
The meeting was facilitated by LEDET
MEC Seaparo Sekoati.
According to the IDC, the company
together with the Hebei Iron & Steel Group
of China have been in talks regarding the
possible establishment of a steel plant in
South Africa as part of the country’s need
to reduce costs of inputs to downstream
manufactures and create employment.
The IDC reported that the pre-feasibility
study was initially conducted however; its
Chinese partner proposed a more detailed
study based on their extensive experience in
that industry.
As a result an extended pre-feasibility
study is being conducted by an independent
consultant who would then provide more
information to the two investors. The
location of the plant is not yet been decided
as a more detailed study is required in order
to determine the viability of the project
Deputy Minister Madala Masuku briefing
the community said South Africa as a whole
need to create jobs through manufacturing
industry.
The proposed steel plant should be taken
as a country project and its location will
be dependent on the details of the prefeasibility.
The results of the pre-feasibility study are
expected by the end of 2015 The Minister
thanked the community for raising the issues
that affects the livelihood of their community
and encouraged the formation of Local
Economic Forum that will jointly discuss
the issues of how best the economy of BaPhalaborwa can be taken forward.
The IDC has committed to brief the
various stakeholders about the progress of
the country’s proposed steel plant project on
a quarterly basis.
The meeting follows a mini-rally organized
by the Ba-Phalaborwa Community Forum
and the ANC Phalaborwa Sub-Region
addressed by ANC NEC member Pule Mabe
at Phosphate Hall in Namakgale on 9 August.
Mabe called on mines to work together
with communities to drive a developmental
agenda.
Two community liaison officers (CLO’s)
were elected after the meeting as per a pact
reached two weeks ago wherein the CLO’s
will have an office, a vehicle, stipends and
work alongside PC in implementing the
agreed upon pact.
SANParks celebrate World Elephant Day
In commemoration of World Elephant
Day celebrated annually on 12 August, South
African National Parks (SANParks) said
although South Africa has only experienced a
few isolated incidents of elephant poaching,
unlike many other African countries, the
country cannot afford to remain complacent.
This according to SANParks Large
Mammal Ecologist, Dr. Sam Ferreira who
said SANParks is applying an integrated
approach in solving wildlife crime in general.
“We cannot allow the status quo particularly
in relation to the current onslaught on our
rhino to continue.”
He said elephants play a huge role within
any landscape where they occur. They are
habitat engineers. As charismatic species
they awaken emotions among people like few
others. As keystone species, they contribute
significantly to the integrity of ecosystems.
From an economic perspective, they are also
value generators. SANParks, however, does
recognize that elephants can also influence
the well-being of people in a negative way.
Ferreira said that SANParks’ integrated
approach thus also focuses on managing the
effects that elephants have on people, the
environment and the economic opportunities
they create. Managing the effects of
elephants on such a range of values is best
done through restoring landscapes such as
closing boreholes that provided additional
water, and allowing natural processes to play
out. SANParks illustrates these challenges
and ways to deal with them at the Elephant
Hall Museum in the Letaba camp of the
Kruger National Park.
The Elephant Hall covers elephant
evolution, biology, behaviour, ecology and
research.
It also showcases the ivory of eight of
Kruger’s greatest tuskers (including six of
the Magnificent Seven) who are currently
on display at the museum. Apart from KNP,
elephants can also be seen at the Addo
Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape,
as well as in the Marakele and Mapungubwe
National Parks in Limpopo.
On August 12, 2012, the inaugural
World Elephant Day was launched to bring
attention to the urgent plight of Asian and
African elephants.

GENERAL
Mathebula appointed
The Democratic Alliance’s Ba-Phalaborwa
Municipal Proportional Representative
Councillor Michael Mathebula has been
appointed as the new Mopani District
Municipality’s MPAC member.
Mathebula was recommended to the
position by the DA Phalaborwa caucus
team led by executive committee member
councillor S R de Beer supported by the
African National Congress.
During council sitting on 30 July, Speaker
David Maake said the DA in council has
proved to be a civil party engaging with high
level of discipline hence the ANC saw it fit
to support the nomination of Councillor
Mathebula and eventually passing his name
unopposed.
Mathebula will replace former DA PR
councillor Gareth Flemming who joined the
ANC in February, but recently resigned in
council also affecting his position within the
district.
“I am thrilled for the trust shown towards
me by our DA caucus leader in Phalaborwa
and also our provincial leader Jacque Smalle
having groomed and mentored me to be
where I am today. I am going to use my
four years experience as a BPM technical
committee member to integrate MDM IDP
with that of BPM,” explained Mathebula.
He added that implementation, monitoring
and providing feedback will be vital for his
course as he moves along ensuring that there
is water for Matiko-Xikaya residents, proper
sanitation for Topville residents and good
roads within the Municipality amongst other
pressing issues.
“Much as we are providing services for our
people, vandalism on electrical and water
infrastructure is still a huge concern,” he
noted.
The only community member including
our journalist in attendance like in the
previous ordinary council sittings, Nico
Myesa said he is confident that Mathebula
will do a good job as he is a loyal servant of
the people.
Speaker David Maake added by
advising Mathebula to bring money to the
Municipality to address bulk infrastructure
challenges.
“We are happy that slowly our budget and
treasury officials are now able to get us out
of the overdraft and we will be able to pay
salaries and fund our own funded project,”
he said.
On the contrary, a senior municipal official
said contractors are crying of not having
received payments for work done in the past
three months.
PR Councillor Percy Maphanzela was
rebuked by the Speaker and Mayor when
Exco member Alinah Peta was delivering
an item on a report sanctioned by council
in the previous sitting having requested the
Strategic and Planning Department Portfolio
Committee to investigate why there is exodus
resignation within the department.
An official who recently left the
Municipality said she could have stayed
had the employer offered a counteroffer.
Currently, the Municipality is only operating
with one fixed term director being Maite
Moakamela under Corporate Affairs while
other departments have been operating with
acting directors for a number of years.
There is still need word on the future
of suspended Municipal Chief Financial
Officer, Aubrey Mushwana, but allegations
are that council and Mushwana are currently
engaging their legal counsels to reach an out
of court settlement.
CELEBRATION: Maphutha L. Malatji Hospital Womens Day celebra on: The Hospital CEO Rebecca
Peta with Clinix Phalaborwa Private Hospital embracing public & private partnership and also with
the Hospital staff members.
Women’s day a success
The fourth annual Maphutha L. Malatji
Hospital Women’s Day celebration was
held at the hospital recently and was a huge
success.
The hospital’s Community Liaison Officer,
Onnie Rammalo, said women from all
sectors within the district took part in the
event.
They were joined by the hospital CEO,
Rebecca Peta.”We had women from
Clinix Phalaborwa Private Clinic, Eskom,
Foskor,educators, nurses, PMC, our district
hospitals, faith based organization, small
entrepreneurs and unemployed ones,” he
said.
Rammalo added that their medical
practitioners offered free consultations to
the women who were dancing, singing and
eating delicious meals prepared by Ramasedi
Catering and Malatji catering services.
He thanked Old Mutual, NTT Hoedspruit,
Lionel Langa media, and Bethuel Malatji
media for their generosity in sponsoring the
event.
”We had limited seating. Guests had to
pay R120 registration fee,which included
meals, but next year we are hoping to secure
a bigger venue, as the support keeps getting
better,” noted Rammalo.

SANBS honour blood donors
The South African National Blood Service
(SANBS) held their award ceremony for
Phalaborwa and Hoedspruit donors last
Friday evening, honouring the Blood donors
who reached certain milestones by selflessly
giving blood.
Nadia de Klerk, a resident of Phalaborwa,

born with a condition requiring surgery,
making her a blood recipient and how it
save her life on multiple occasions. Little
Ané received blood products 7 times in the
9 months she spent in the ICU within the
first year of her life. Little Ané was later
diagnosed with a brain tumour and became
a blood recipient again during the surgery to
remove the tumour.
De Klerk explained how little Ané has some
residual tumour that could not be removed
and how she might again in future need
surgery and blood, expressing her gratitude
towards people like the donors present for
the wonderful gift they give every time they
generously donate blood.
Jurie Opperman, a donor with 135
donations to his name mentioned that
“donating becomes a way of life, you know
when it is time to go”.
Donors who received medals for donating
50 units of blood were: Robert Hurn,
Francina Jacobs, Tlou Kgare, Anetta Korras,
Fatima Mohamed, Hayley Reeves Moore,

Cancer affects all of us, whether you’re a
daughter, mother, sister, friend, coworker,
doctor, or patient and everyone will be
walking for 12 hours so that you don’t lose
hope. Look out for the purple bowed trees at
the entrance of the town reminding everyone
the relay is happening soon. The Local Bikers
clubs joined hands with the committee and
distributed flyers at the weekend. Any Bike
enthusiast will confirm that scars are tattoos
with better stories, whether a cancer scar or a
scar from an accident. Cancer can take away
all of your physical abilities but it cannot
touch your mind, it cannot touch your heart,
and it cannot touch your soul.

THEY WERE THERE: Phalaborwa FM top 8 soccer challenge: PFM presenter sports Desmond
Ganeji Ndlovu, Doroba Centre Mildrand Malesa, PFM MarkeƟng Manager, Ditaba DJ Eddie Crook

Mhlongo and Sputla Lebogo, Commentator Mika Mthombeni and PFM presenter Abednico Kolobe

Try Again crowned as winners
Try Again FC from Humulani were
crowned the annual Phalaborwa FM’s top
8 soccer challenge on Sunday at Mafamasi
soccer field after narrowly beating Lulekani
United 2-1.
Try Again sent clear signals that they
weren’t crowned as the champs of the
recently ended season of the Ba-Phalaborwa
Local Football Association by fluke.
Try Again went home with R1000, a full
soccer kit, gold medals and a floating trophy
while Lulekani United consoled themselves
R700, a soccer kit and silver medals. The
two losers finals All Nations went home with
R500 and bronze medals and Super Eagles
only managed R200.
According to one of the organizers
and sponsors, Doroba Manganyi of
DorobaCentre, the central idea behind the
challenge was to attract more teams to join
the BPLFA.
“We are excited with the turn out and the
type of football displayed throughout the
challenge and we are hoping for an even
greater campaign next year. We gave away
three DSTV decoders to lucky three fans,”
explained Manganyi.
Phalaborwa FM’s sports presenter and one
of the challenge’s organizers said they are
grateful to the community of Ba-Phalaborwa
for coming in their huge number.
Both BPLFA Chairperson and Secretary
Gazita Mhlongo and Sputla Lebogo says
football is still alive in the Municipality, but
lack of resources and better facilities are
hampering its development and called on
Good Samaritans to assist underprivileged
players to realize their dreams of one day
campaigning in the ABSA Premiership.
The challenge was hosted at All Nations
soccer field in Makhushane and Mafamafi in
Humulani from 8 to 16 August.
Try Again easily advanced to the finals
by walloping Super Eagles 3-0 in the first
semi-finals while Lulekani United came from
behind to score three goals in the second to
silence the home team with some superior
tactical and technical displays.
Nkumbe Brickyard was also thanked by
Phalaborwa FM Marketing Manager Eddie
Crook for having sponsored the challenge.
Lulekani United players celebraƟng aŌer scoring
the third goal against All NaƟons.
FAILED: All NaƟons goalkeeper failed to save a
freekick that led to the third goal.
