Vlot meegesleur,
g
verwoes
rivier meegesleur is.
toerusting, waaronder twee groot
enjins, die braaiers en stoele kon
herwin word nie.
Die boot was ingerig om 65
passasiers te vervoer. Dit was 12-
16
jaar lank in gebruik. Leon sê dat daar
al voorheen vloede was maar dat
hierdie vloed hom baie onverwags
en onkant betrap het.
Die skade met die verlies van
die boot, wat die hart van sy
onderneming is, beloop ongeveer
R750 000.
noemenswaardige
skade
daar
plaasgevind nie.
ONDER WATER: Hierdie gedeelte
by Olifants River Safaris was totaal
onder water.
VERWOES: Die dubbeldekkerboot is totaal
verwoes nadat dit deur die Olifantsrivier
meegesleur was.

HELP: A family of three people live in this one room house.
PHALABORWA HERALD Friday March 14, 2014
IN NEED: Lucas Chauke outside his one room house at Kurhula village in
Lulekani.
Family appeals for help
Members of Chauke family have been
without proper roof over their heads for
the past five years since their house was
destroyed by heavy rains.
Lucas Chauke (39), from Kurhula village
in Lulekani, is living in a one-roomed mud
hut with his eight siblings and their three
children.
The family has no source of income and
Chauke says they depend on the children’s
social grant money. ‘We only manage to buy
maize meal at the end of the month because
the money is too little’, said Chauke.
He said it becomes difficult when it rains
and they have to go and ask for shelter from
relatives. ‘We are afraid the house might
come down on us one day,’he said. Chauke
said they have tried to apply for a RDP house
with no luck, despite other houses being built
in the village.
He said the disaster management team at
the municipality gave them a tent last year
but because of rains and wind it is no longer
in a good condition. To add salt to the wound,
the family does not have a toilet and Chauke
said they have to go to the bushes to relieve
themselves.
Meanwhile another family of three people
who live in a one room house also applied for
an RDP house without success.
Both families said the situation is very bad
and they are waiting for a good Samaritan to
help them with either shelter or food.
According to Ba Phalaborwa Municipality’s
spokesperson,
Jonas
Mahesu,
the
municipality is not aware of the problems
faced by the families and will work with the
ward councilors to find out about the RDP
houses applications.
LOVING MEMORIES: Ken Farmery( Mcgiver) 64,
passed away on February 14. ‘We’re gonna miss
you very much. Thanks for all your wisdom you
shared with us. From your friends. Run Mcgiver
Run.’
AL ERGER: Slaggate op die Phalaborwa,
Micapad raak al erger en het motoriste
moedeloos.
CELEBRATION:It was an historic day in Ba-Phalaborwa when chief Andries Malatji of Makhushane
village married Sylvia Malatji last week Saturday at Makhushane village.

Slikdamme loop oor, besoedeling erger
Die swaar reën wat verlede
Donderdag
op
Phalaborwa
neergesak het, het veroorsaak dat
die slikdamme by Bosveld Kunsmis
daarvan beiinvloed het.’n Bron get
gesê dat al die slikdamme by Bosveld
Kunsmis oorgeloop het Dr Eddie
Riddell, Bestuurder Waterbronne
van die Kruger Wildtuin het by
navraag gesê dat die storting baie
groter is as wat die geval in Januarie
was.
Die riviere het toe nie so sterk
gevloei nie en die skade wat die
suurwater veroorsaak het kon gouer
opgemerk word.
Met die Januarie storting was
groot visvrektes waargeneem.
Riddell
sê voorts dat die ph vlakke baie
wisselend is in die area waar die
water by die Selatirivier inloop. Die
suurgehalte van die water wat van
die slikdamme afloop is baie hoog.
Daar het teen verlede Sondag
nog steeds besoedelde water na die
Selatirivier gevloei.
Riddell het die vrees uitgespreek
dat daar met elke groot reënbui
besoedeling kan plaasvind.

RALLY: ANC provincial executive committee
celebrating at the manifesto rally held at
Refentswe Sports Ground on Sunday.
ANC Manifesto rally
The African National Congress in
Phalaborwa launched its election manifesto
at Refentswe Sports Ground on Sunday.
As election time draws, political parties
are busy with election campaigns to convince
the electorate to vote for them, members of
the public are being showered with almost
identical promises from different political
parties hoping to get their votes. As in every
campaign, the current promises include job
creation, quality education and shelter.
Members and supporters of the ruling party
from all parts of the area were transported
to the venue during the event and they were
each given a t-shirt.
Dr Poppy Ramothoba, Provincial executive
committee member, addressed the crowd. The
rally was held under the theme ‘We always
have a good story to tell’. Speakers from
SANCO, SACP, COSATU gave supporting
messages.
The ANC outlined its vision for South
Africa and told all the good stories for the
past 20 years during the manifesto launch.
Ramathoba said a lot of good work has been
done. ‘Millions more people have water,
electricity, sanitation, shelter where 16 million
houses were given to people, access to schools,
clinics and other services. Granted thousands
more are still waiting as 19 years is too
short a time to reverse decades of deliberate
underdevelopment,’ said Ramothoba.
Some of the residents at the launch said,
there was nothing new in the ANC’s manifesto
and that it was just a repetition of old promises
previously made by the party.
On the other hand, Edmond Mbetse,
chairperson of the concerned group, said the
guest speaker touched on many important
issues and believed the manifesto was good,
especially because it emphasised the need for
free education in the country. ‘We need free
education at all levels,’ said Mbetse.
Another resident, Tumelo Sekgobela,
wondered how the ruling party would do away
with issues of corruption as the guest speaker
mentioned they would eradicate it when she
launched the manifesto. ‘How can corrupt
people eradicate corruption because they are
corrupt themselves,’ Sekgobela asked.
Sekgobela also wanted to know if the ruling
party was not more interested in the number
of votes than providing people with basic
services.‘People of this country still suffer;
they have no roads as most are have potholes
as large as swimming pools. We have no water
and no jobs,’ concluded Sekgobela.
HAPPY: Members of the community dancing after being given t- shirts at the ANC manifesto held
on Sunday.
Loadshedding our future
ESKOM declared a level 3 emergency last
Thursday morning and warned that there
would be load shedding in different suburbs
across the country.
Municipalities were informed of the need
to reduce electricity and they would decide
in which suburbs to cut power.

Beware of OMO sms scam
Consumer goods company, Unilever has
urged consumers to beware of a hoax OMO
competition that has come to the company’s
attention.
According to Unilever South Africa,
external affairs and media manager, Unathi
Mgobozi, the scam involves consumers
receiving an sms or e-mail with a notification
that they have won a specified sum of money
from OMO washing powder.
Consumers are prompted to claim their
prize using the reference and contact numbers
provided.
To redeem their winnings, consumers are
requested to furnish their banking details and
to deposit monies into an account that will
secure their prize.
“Our call center has been inundated with
calls from victims of the scam, consumers
are urged to be vigilant at all times and are
encouraged not to act on receipt of such
smses,” said Unilever SA’s marketing director
for laundry, Shaadia Vawda.
“Unilever takes such scams seriously and
thorough investigations are being conducted
to ensure that perpetrators face the full might
of the law. We will never request consumers
to deposit money after winning a competition
or require a winner to send banking details
via sms,” said Vawda
She said that in the case of any competitions
run by Unilever, all winners will be contacted
by Unilever representatives individually
and winners will not be expected to pay any
administration or transactional fees.
OMO has given away prizes over the years
to the value of more than R20 million without
ever asking for money in return for a prize.
Criminals are using the OMO brand to take
money from hard-working South Africans,
including pensioners, so Unilever strongly
advises consumers to spread the word to
friends and family. The best way to stop the
problem is for more people to be aware and
vigilant.
OMO has embarked on a campaign to
increase awareness about the scam and
remains committed to responsible marketing
and advertising. Consumers are advised that
all competitions and promotions by Unilever
will always be advertised through appropriate
print, media and online channels intended to
engage consumers on issues that matter to
them.
“Consumers are at the very heart of our
business and we will do everything in our
power to protect them and safeguard their
interests,” said Vawda.

Junior title
for Jasper
Jasper Seroka of Namakgale won a junior
light weight title in a fight against Xolani
Mcotheli at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports
Centre near East London on Sunday.
Seroka outscored Mcotheli over 12 rounds
in a clash for the vacant belt, the decision
was in a complete agreement with judges
Andile Matika and Siphiwo Mbini scoring it
116-111 and 116-110 whilst judge Siya VabazaBooi handed in a way out card of 114-112.
Seroka started his boxing career in 1992 at
Namakgale. In the year 2002 he was trained
as the professional boxer and won the title of
South African junior lightweight champion.
Mcotheli who weighs 58,90kg took counts in
rounds two and twelve and spent most of the
fight ducking.
Referee Andile Matika failed to take control
of the fight by not warning Mcotheli at anytime
during the contest for the infringements and
he would have been well within his rights to
deduct a point or two from Mcoteli for these
poor tactics. Seroka weighs 57,85kg improved
his record to ten from 23 wins against four
defeats while Mcotheli dropped to eight
loses against ten victories. The tournament
was presented by Mzi Mnguni of Eyethu
Promotions.
CHAMP: Jasper Seroka of Namakgale won the
junior lightweight title at Mdantsane on Sunday.
