Best wishes to the class of 2013!
The son of Salvadoran immigrants, Jesse A. Mejia
is a first generation Latino who was born and
raised in the high crime, drug and gang infested
areas of South-Central Los Angeles. Jesse’s father,
a landscaper and his mother, a homemaker
instilled in him the importance of establishing
and pursuing goals with vigor and enthusiasm.
At the age of 15, Jesse earned a full academic
scholarship to attend Phillips Exeter Academy, one
of America’s most prestigious boarding schools. As
a junior at Syracuse University, Jesse was elected
by the student body to become the first Latino
president of the school’s Student Government
Association. A graduate of Georgetown University’s
McDonough School of Business, Jesse earned his
MBA and joined General Motors’ financing subsidiary, GMAC Financial Services,
where he oversaw the risk management controls for a credit portfolio that exceeded
$1 billion. Jesse worked as the Strategy Manager for the Volkswagen Group of
America, where he was tasked to oversee all strategic initiatives for the company’s
financing subsidiary, Volkswagen Credit, Inc., an $8 billion enterprise.
Jesse’s experiences have required him to develop strategies to successfully bridge
the two distinct worlds of being raised in an immigrant household (where neither
parent spoke English nor had more than a few years of education), and studying at
top tier institutions as well as working for multinational corporations. In order to
overcome roadblocks, setbacks and a lack of resources, Jesse was forced to develop
self-awareness, self-discipline and self-motivation.
Jesse’s passion to motivate and help others to achieve success inspired him to start
his own company, MBA Catalyst, which helps professionals lay the groundwork to
obtain a Master of Business Administration degree.
As a speaker, Jesse shares his inspiring personal experiences and strategies on how to
overcome adversity, economic, social and cultural obstacles, and more importantly,
how to deal with rejection while maintaining a positive attitude and relentless
drive to excel. Quoted by the Wall Street Journal on the importance of making
the most of opportunities, Jesse has been a featured speaker at Syracuse University,
Dartmouth College, Stony Brook University, Georgetown University, and Cornell
University.

I have spent more years in this school than I ever expected to, but I do not regret it.
Along the way I have met many individuals that have made my journey all the more
memorable and significant to me. Without them, I would not be where I am today
and the stories would not be as interesting. The path I am on is unique and without
my friends, family, and faculty, it would not have been so.

It has been a great privilege to have attended the University of Maryland these past
four years. I would like to thank the three most influential and supportive people in
my life: my father, Jose Ferrufino, my mother, Maria Ferrufino, and my older sister,

also like to thank the faculty and staff of CCJS, USLT, DOTS, and DRL departments for teaching me skills and lessons that I will use throughout my life.

I would not be where I am right now without the support and guidance of my
parents, the words of wisdom shared by my family friends, and the friends I have
made, who never let giving up be an option in any aspect of my college career. I will
never forget the long nights of studying, our midnight discussions about life, love
and friendship, nor will I erase the bond we have made together in our college career.
Thank you!.

Studying international development, security, and economic policy most certainly stems from
my ethnicity, Salvadoran. Visiting my family numerous times throughout the course of my
life, I was taught what it was like to embrace your roots and never forget where you came from.
Ever since I can remember, addressing poverty and government corruption in Latin American,
particularly in El Salvador has always been an interest of mine. I am very proud that I will have
the knowledge to give back.
