New Years Resolutions of a Different Kind
What have you resolved to differently in 2015? Business resolutions for this new Year may
go a long way in making 2015 easier and more profitable. What can we do to make the
business we have better? What small steps in the right direction will keep me focused and
ready for the business I have and will help to gain this year over last? Below is a list of small
steps for a bigger or maybe just a bit more organized future….
• Knowledge is power: Spend more time tracking what my competitors are doing
• improve office security
• join the local Chamber of Commerce
• make our workforce more diverse in talents and passions for select areas of the business
• Take a reality check on how well I am keeping my existing customers happy
• Set up schedule for social networking sites
• change all my passwords
• create an exit procedure for departing employees
• organize a series of marketing ideas to attract new customers
• become less of a bottleneck to the business
• get better at prioritizing my tasks each day
• redesign our business cards
• subscribe/Read the Wall Street Journal
• Update/put together an employee handbook
• Calendar to remember my employees' birthdays
• expand/update our email/social marketing programs
• define our career path better
• Get clear guidelines from the accountant to make year ends easier this year….What I can do
better each month to make this happen
• conduct more customer satisfaction surveys
• practice active listening
• track employee utilization better
• launch a direct mail campaign
• go to the IFA Expo this summer
• research new technologies
• improve tracking and ROI analysis on our marketing $
• plan a reunion party for former employees
• ask a former client to write a review for us on Google/Yelp
• be less of a jerk to my employees
• start a business blog
• think positively
• hold myself accountable
• back up my data
• try new marketing activities
• stop shying away from networking events
• remember why I love what I do
• be more focused
•stop procrastinating
The list is long, but the message is the same. This can be the new year to be proactive and

Leadership Tips
A collection of tips for all leaders to use:
• There is only one way~ the straight way. It sets the tone of the entire organization.
• Be open to the best of what everyone, everywhere, has to offer; transfer learning across
your organization.
• Get the right people in the right jobs- it is more important than developing a strategy.
• An informal atmosphere is a competitive advantage.
• Make sure everybody counts and everybody knows they count.
• Legitimate self-confidence is a winner-the true test of self-confidence is the courage for
them to be open and share their ideas.
• Business has to be fun-celebrations energize and enthuse an organization.
• Never underestimate the other guy.
• Understand where in your business is your greatest value and put your best people there!
• Know when to meddle and when to let creativity flow- not always easy, pure instinct.

Why Do Top Employees Chose to Leave?
The percentage of the American population with college educations has soared from
roughly 5 % in 1950 to over 30% today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Given this
fact some employers may assume that there’s an overabundance of top notch employees
ripe for the picking. Not so.
Despite these encouraging figures, that should provide you with ample choices in hiring
companies everywhere are struggling to recruit, hire and maintain excellent staff. Worse
yet, the new hires they do find many times lack core skills like basic professionalism and
an analytical self starting attitude.
If your organization is fueled by efforts of a handful of top performers, don’t let them slip
through your grasp. Here are six reasons highly skilled workers tend to seek out greener
pastures:
>They receive few rewards for good behavior. If high performers receive no extra kudos
or compensation for their extraordinary performance, they’ll begin to wonder whether it’s
worth putting in the extra effort. It’s important to acknowledge those who work to promote
the success of the whole company. If you can’t afford to reward them financially, find
another way to recognize their contributions.
>They resent being micromanaged. Top performers tend to be self-directed, out of the box
thinkers who enjoy problem solving. They’re likely to feel creatively and intellectually
stunted by a manager who insists on controlling every aspect of their performance. For
best results, give top performers the room to answer challenges in their own ways.
>They feel underutilized or unchallenged. Because of their need for mastery, high
performing employees can get easily frustrated and bored when their roles become too
restricted or stagnant. The antidote: Feed them a steady diet of challenges.
>They see no room at the top. Top performers tend to thrive in an environment that allows
them to continually learn and grow. If they find themselves in a situation that offers no
obvious opportunities for advancement, they may feel stuck and their eyes may begin to
wander.
>They’re faced with unreasonable demands. Some employers overload high performers
with an ever increasing list of projects. There’s nothing wrong with increasing
responsibility, but be careful not to make reckless demands on people’s time and energy.
>They aren’t kept up with changes in the organization. If your outfit is undergoing
changes that threaten to affect your top performers, don’t leave them in the dark. Seismic
shifts in the office hierarchy can be upsetting to employees at every level and high
performers may seek out safer ground if they grow uncomfortable or fear their jobs are in
danger.
Whatever the reason, the loss of a top employee can cost the company immeasurably due
to an inexperienced staff. The cost to hire and train far outweighs the cost to maintain.
What tips do you have to pass along for great employee retention? Any comments or
suggestions send to [email protected].

Thoughts for the Weeks Ahead
“When you prepare yourself in the morning, both mentally and physically, you
control the rudder of your life. When you start your day consciously, your results
are intentional.”
— Terri Cole
“It isn’t just with our speech that we change things but with our actions.” — Yogi
Cameron
