Almost exclusively devoted to tourism today, the island of Sal owes its
name to the industry that flourished
between the eighteenth and mid
twentieth century. Land of beautiful
white sand beaches, of warm transparent waters and coral reefs, the

for water sports, from surfing, windsurfing and sailing to scuba diving,
fishing and swimming.
Despite its volcanic origin, the island
is flat, resembling the lunar surface,
and has a warm and dry tropical climate, which allows tourists to enjoy
the paradise like beaches or the famous salt flats during 365 days a year.

Santa Maria is linked to Espargos,
in the South, by an asphalted road
that runs through the whole island.
It takes 25 minutes by car to get from
one place to the other. Once in Espargos, the road turns aside to Pedra de Lume (East) and to Palmeira
(West).
There public transports available with
regular schedules to/from the two
most important villages (100$00);
transport to Pedra de Lume and
Palmeira are occasionally and the
schedules not reliable. Therefore,
we recommend you to take a taxi:
Espargos/Santa Maria (700$00 to
1.000$00), Espargos/Pedra de Lume
(300$00) and Espargos/Airport
(150$00 to 200$00). You can rent
a car at 3,600$00/day, and a down
payment 20,000$00 is required.
Eine asphaltierte Strasse durchquert

It is said that before the navigators
Diogo Gomes and António Noli had
glimpsed at Sal, in 1460, the island
was already known by the Moors
due to the salt pits, from where the
island got its name.
Nevertheless, the dryness of the island led to the postponing of the settlement of the island which, during
centuries, was only used for cattle
pasturage, namely goats, and was the
habitat for the flamingo and turtles
and, sporadically home for the slaves
who worked in the salt pits that depended on fluctuation of the international demand as far as this resource
was concerned.

the intensive exploitation of salt for
export to Brazil and Africa led to the
solid settlement of the island of Sal.
Nevertheless, the effective prosperity of the island really started in 1939
with the construction of the airport,
initially aimed at the supply of passenger aeroplanes, and later used as the
infrastructure for the tourist development of the island.

Pedra do Lume is undoubtedly one of the must-see landmarks on
the island of Sal. It is located below the sea level and it’s a salt lake
inside the crater of a volcano long extinct. Inactive since the end of
the twentieth century, the salt flats preserve, even today, some artefacts used in the extraction and transportation of salt. Plunge into
these waters and rejuvenate in this memorable experience.

encrusted in the black lava of the rocks on the brink of the sea. There is
another swimming-pool very close,
an underground swimming-pool that
can be reached by diving through a
whole in the ground. It’s 6 km away,
to the North of Palmeira.

Salinas de Pedra de Lume – located
in the east coast of the island, this
salt pit occupies the belly of a huge
crater of an extinct volcano, the walls
of which is porous and allow for the
infiltration of sea water. The access
is possible through an artificial tunnel built in 1804 by the businessman
Manuel António Martins, the person
responsible for the intensive commercial exploration of the salt pits of
Sal. Make sure you also visit the salt
