that you know exactly where you are. The Erne has many islands, but an island, looking from
a cruiser, sometimes appears to be part of the mainland, and therefore it is often necessary to
just check where you have been as well as where you are going. Always obey the markers and
in the lake sections do not go too close to them.

The Erne Waterway is not difficult to navigate, but there are some Golden Rules which MUST
BE OBEYED AT ALL TIMES IF YOU ARE NOT TO RUN AGROUND or get into other trouble.
It must be appreciated that the Erne is a natural waterway and not dredged deep to the sides
like canal systems. In fact, the banks of the rivers and the shores of all the islands are normally
VERY SHALLOW a good way from the shore line and are quite often rocky!

white. Craft must pass the marker on the
side painted white (some markers are three
dimensional). Middle ground markers (3)
should be given a wide berth and can be
passed on either side. Where two middle
ground markers are together do not go
between them. Many markers bear a
reference number which can be used to
identify the position of the craft.
Do not pass “no entry” marker (4).
