Those are the
words with which Corto
Maltese – sailor endowed with
an ironic look, a corrosive attitude but with a romantic heart
– puts an end to the lagoon
adventure L’angelo della finestra d’Oriente (The angel of
the East), published in 1971.
They are the words of his creator, the cartoonist Hugo Pratt,
who lived a large part of his life
in Venice between long jour-

enezia sarebbe
la mia fine!».
Così Corto Maltese, marinaio e «gentiluomo di fortuna» dallo sguardo ironico, la battuta corrosiva, ma il fondo romantico,
sigilla l’avventura lagunare
“L’angelo della finestra
d’Oriente”, pubblicata nel
1971. Glielo fa dire il suo
creatore, il cartoonist Hugo
Pratt, che passò quasi una
vita a Venezia tra lunghi
viaggi e provvisori addii.

La storia, che si svolge
durante la Prima guerra mondiale, vede Corto sulle tracce
d’una mappa dell’Eldorado.
Visita i monaci dell’isola di
San Francesco del Deserto,
incontra il rabbino nel
Ghetto Vecchio, abbatte a
mitragliate un aereo austriaco, scopre una filiera di spioni. Eppure, in Piazza San
Marco il protagonista capisce che la particolare atmosfera lo renderebbe pigro,
invischiandolo in un intrigo
di tradizioni, magie, arcani
simbolismi: vivere tra calli e
canali, subirne l’incanto lo
porterebbe a perdere l’identità di giramondo.
Forse il suo protagonismo fa
rima con narcisismo. E allora preferisce allentarsi. Con
rimpianto.
Corto ritornerà in città come
inatteso “ospite”, caduto dal
tetto durante una riunione
massonica, nella Fiaba di
Venezia - Sirat Al Bunduqiyyah, del 1977: inseguendo
il fantasma dello scrittore
maledetto Baron Corvo,
intende rintracciare lo smeraldo chiamato Clavicola di
Salomone.
Se ambigua appare la città
notturna dove ogni ombra
riflessa sull’acqua può nascondere l’insidia, enigmatici
come sfingi sono i leoni
greci sulla porta dell’Arsenale, violenti o misteriosi, o
addirittura ingenui, risaltano
i personaggi incontrati da
Corto.
Al posto dello smeraldo,
trova la lettera di Baron
Corvo datata primo aprile.
Una beffa, dunque. Lui non
se la prende più di tanto.
Improvvisamente si scopre
nelle tasche proprio quel
gioiello. Come fanno i veneziani stanchi delle autorità

neys and temporary farewells.
The story unfolds during the
First World War and sees
Corto Maltese on the track of
the Eldorado map. He visits
the monks of the island of ‘San
Francesco del Deserto, he
encounters the rabbi in the
‘Ghetto Vecchio’, he shoots
down an Austrian airplane by
means of a machine-gun, and
discovers a network of spies.
Yet, in Saint Mark’s Square the
protagonist realizes that the
city’s particular atmosphere
would have made him lazy
entangling him in a plot of traditions, magic and arcane symbolism. He could be captured
by the beauty of a live spent
between callis and canals his
identity adventurer would thus
be undermined. Perhaps, his
self-advertising nature rhymes
with narcissism. So he decides
to break away , although with
regret. Corto will return to
Venice as an unexpected
“guest”, falling down from the
roof during a Masonic meeting, in the 1977 Fiaba di
Venezia-Sirat Al Bunduqiyyah
(Tale of Venice-Sirat Al
Bunduqiyyah). By chasing the
ghost of the cursed writer Baron
Corvo he wants to track down
the emerald called Clavicola di
Salomone (Solomon’s Clavicle).
If on the one side the nocturnal
city – where each shadow
reflected onto the water can
hide dangers – appears ambiguous and the Greek lions
standing on the door of the
‘Arsenale’ appear enigmatic as
a sphinx, on the other the characters encountered by Corto
result violent, or mysterious or
even ingenuous. Instead of the
emerald, he finds the letter of
Baron Corvo dated April 1st.
A hoax then. He is not very
much bothered by it. All of a
sudden he finds out he has that
very jewel in his pocket. Corto

will knock at the door of one of
the city’s magical places just as
Venetians do when, tired of
authorities, they want to move
to marvellous worlds.
Whoever wishes to try should
go to ‘Calle dell’Amor dei
Amici’ close to ‘Campo San
Polo’ on the bridge ‘Ponte delle
Meraviglie’ in the area of the
Accademia. ‘Calle dei Marrani’, which was mentioned to
San Geremia exists only in
Pratt’s imagination. Corto leaves Venice to experience new
adventures, and almost thirty
years before a certain Gary
Peters arrived in the city from
the United States for ‘Adventure in Venice’, dated 1949.
‘Asso di Picche’ (literally ace of
spade), avenger dressed in
grare in mondi meravigliosi,
anche Corto busserà alla
porta di uno dei luoghi
magici della città. Per chi
vuole provarci, sono in Calle
de l’Amor dei Amici, vicino
Campo San Polo, sul Ponte
delle Maravegie, presso
l’Accademia. Calle dei Marrani, indicata a San Geremia
esiste, ahinoi, solo nella fantasia di Pratt.
Se Corto parte da Venezia
per altre avventure, quasi
trent’anni prima un certo
Gary Peters arrivava dagli
Stati Uniti per “Avventura
a Venezia”, del 1949. Si nascondeva sotto questa
identità l’Asso di Picche,
giustiziere in calzamaglia,
cappuccio e mascherina.
Primo personaggio a fumetti creato da Hugo Pratt
e Mario Faustinelli nel
1945 sugli Albi Uragano, la
cui redazione si trovava a
San Canciano.
Un gangster, scappato con
un favoloso diamante, si
rifugia a Venezia braccato
dai complici.
E temendone la vendetta,
chiede aiuto all’Asso di
Picche.
Lo uccideranno sotto le
statue dei Tetrarchi nell’angolo tra Palazzo Ducale e la Basilica di San
Marco. L’Asso inseguirà
l’assassino fino in cima alla
Torre dell’Orologio dove il
martello dei Mori, che battono le ore, ne colpirà la
tempia fulminandolo.
La polizia (con dei curiosi
caschi coloniali) troverà la
refurtiva. Sopra di questa
una carta da gioco, l’asso
di picche con su scritto
«Col mio saluto a questa
meravigliosa Italia».
È un invito a ritornare.

It could be the title of this unpublished sequence of photographs taken during the wedding festivities of a 25-year- old
Hugo Pratt – who was born close to Rimini in 1927. The pictures
had been taken by his colleague Leone Frollo, future master
of erotism, on 12th March 1952, on the roofs of Palazzo
Baglioni, close to Campo San Cassiano at Rialto. Giorgio
Bellaviti, who at the time cooperated to the creation of the
periodical cartoon book Asso di Picche, once lived there. You
can see him in the picture with his friend Giancarlo Guarda. All
of them, exception made for Hugo Pratt, got their degree in
architecture. The artist died in Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1995.

Così potrebbe intitolarsi la sequenza fotografica inedita
(pubblicata in queste pagine) realizzata durante i festeggiamenti per il matrimonio di Hugo Pratt che aveva allora
25 anni (nato vicino a Rimini nel 1927). Le istantanee vennero scattate dal collega Leone Frollo, futuro maestro dell’erotismo, il 12 marzo 1952, sui tetti di Palazzo Baglioni,
vicino campo San Cassiano, a Rialto. Vi abitava Giorgio
Bellavitis, all’epoca collaboratore del periodico a fumetti
Asso di Picche, che qui compare assieme all’amico
Giancarlo Guarda. Tutti, meno Pratt, si laurearono in architettura. L’artista à morto a Losanna (Svizzera) nel 1995.

published in the ‘Albo Uragano’, the which editorial office was in San Canciano.
A gangster, who fled with a
fabulous diamond, takes refuge in Venice tracked down by
his accomplices. And fearing a
revenge he asks Asso di Picche
for help. He is murdered
underneath the Tetrarchi statues at the corner of Palazzo
Ducale and Basilica di San
Marco. Asso chases the murderer up to the Torre
dell’Orologio (Clock Tower)
where he will be struck to
death at the temple by the
hammer of the Moors
striking the hour. The police
(wearing bizarre colonial helmets) will then find the haul
on top of which there is a
playing card, the ace of spades
with written «My greetings
to this marvellous Italy». It is
an invitation to return. What
more could one ask?

ARP AT THE CORRER MUSEUM – DADA AND BEYOND
Hans Jean-Harp was one of the most outstanding exponents of
Dadaism – together with other New York artists like Duchamp,
Man Ray, Picabia, Stieglitz , the Germans Hausmann and Max
Ernst – as it is clear from the great exhibition on show at the
Correr Museum until 16th July 2006: ARP, Jean et Sophie Taeuber
– Dada and beyond. With the display of 140 works – including
sculptures, drawings, collages, pieces of furniture, architecture
and interior design projects borrowed from outstanding
European museums and prestigious private collections – the
exhibition retraces the relationship between the sculptor Hans
Jean Arp and the interesting figure of his wife, Sophie Taeuber
(who prematurely and tragically died in 1943) within the Dada
movement. The exhibition also deals with aspects linked to
Sophie’s interior design projects within the Bauhaus context as well as with the bond
existing between Arp and Venice.

Del Dadaismo Hans Jean-Arp fu uno dei maggiori esponenti, assieme ai “newyorkesi” Duchamp, Man Ray, Picabia e Stieglitz e ai tedeschi Hausmann e Max Ernst,
come dimostra la grande esposizione al Museo Correr, fino al 16 luglio 2006, dal titolo ARP, Jean et Sophie Taeuber – Dada e oltre. Attraverso centoquaranta opere tra
sculture, disegni, collage, mobili, progetti di architettura e arredamento - provenienti da importanti musei europei e da prestigiose collezioni private - si delineano
i rapporti tra Arp e l’interessante figura della moglie, Sophie Taeuber (che scompare prematuramente e tragicamente nel 1943), nell’ambito dell’esperienza Dada,
fino agli aspetti più strettamente vicini al design e alla progettazione d’interni nel
contesto Bauhaus di Sophie, e ai legami tra Arp e Venezia.

che nella sua lunga carriera
Canaletto incrocia il mondo
dell’incisione, anzi, sembra
proprio che egli colga le
potenzialità promozionali di
quest’arte, rispetto ai propri
lavori, come accaduto in
alcune altre occasioni: ma in
questo caso il successo è clamoroso. Lo dimostrano non
solo le molte ristampe, ma

n 1766, the great Venetian landscape painter Antonio Canal, also called
the Canaletto, is asked to produce twelve drawings portraying the great feasts taking
place in Venice at the presence of the doge. The work had
been commissioned by Lodovico Furlanetto, a wellknown merchant of prints,
who wanted the drawings to
be etched by the great artist
from Belluno, Giambattista
Brustolon (1712-1796). It is
not the first time that
Canaletto encounters the art
of etching. As a matter of fact,
he seems to be particularly
inclined in capturing the full
potential of this art and in
displaying it in his works. In
this case, the works are an
incredible success, as it is
clear from the large number
of reprints and works of other
painters inspired by this series
– which include the works by

ora conservati in gran parte
al Louvre.

Si va dalla sua elezione fino
all’incoronazione sulla Scala dei Giganti a Palazzo
Ducale; dalla partenza sul
Bucintoro per lo Sposalizio
del Mare alla Festa del
Giovedì Grasso; dalla visita
alla Salute fino alla processione per il Corpus Domini
e al Banchetto.

del “vedutista” per eccellenza e per la prima volta
esposti insieme.
I fogli di Canaletto, eseguiti a penna e inchiostro bruno con acquerello grigio, di
ottima qualità, descrivono
con minuziosità ogni particolare: dagli edifici agli
arredi, dalle imbarcazioni
agli abiti, agli scenografici
contesti, mentre Brustolon
trasferisce su rame con
straordinaria perizia e fedeltà le magnifiche invenzioni e le perfette prospettive del maestro veneziano.
In mostra è inoltre presente la camera ottica, usata
da alcuni pittori fiamminghi, come Vermeer e
Vanvitelli ma soprattutto
proprio da Canaletto che
ne fece lo strumento principe dei vedutisti e dalla
quale, all’inizio del XIX
secolo, derivò la macchina
fotografica.

It’s located in St. Mark’s Square, between
“Ala Napoleonica” and “Procuratie
Nuove”; it takes its origin from the collection Teodoro Correr gave to the City in
1830. The museum is divided into three
sections: the neo-classical part, the historical part, about Venetian civilisation, and
the Venetian picture gallery well displayed
by Carlo Scarpa. Visitor will discover
also the political, social and military
history of Venice’s Serenissima Republic.

The symbolic seat of Venetian power,
formerly the seat of the Doge and
State Magistratures, the Palace is the
supreme embodiment of Venetian
civilisation. A masterpiece of gothic
architecture, it reveals a grandiose
stratification of building and ornamental elements. The interiors, superbly decorated by legions of artists,
including Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto, Vittoria and Tiepolo, offer a
range of different experiences: from
the vast halls of political power to the
interior finishings of the Doge's chambers, from the gloom of the prison

L’occhio di Fortuny

Reopened to the public on 27th
October 2001, Palazzo Centanni is
the birth place of the famous playwright Carlo Goldoni. This delightful
gothic palace today houses a sparkling
new, high-tech museum devoted to
the playwright’s work and includes a
host of documents and projections of
historical theatrical performances.
Permanent exhibition: Venetian theatrical relics and many texts, original manuscripts and theatrical works of several eras.
This particulary charming museum,
located in a Gothic palace, keeps the
original usage given by Mariano
Fortuny who created there his own
atelier of photography, set-designing
and staging. Nowadays, because of
restoration works, in the museum are
organized only temporary exhibitions
of visual communication.

The Library, designed by Jacopo
Sansovino, was built and decorated
between 1537 and 1560, at the request
of the Procurators of St. Mark, in order
to receive Latin and Greek codes, gifts
by Cardinal Bessarione. Nowadays, the
Library houses a priceless book collection of Venice’s Serenissima Republic.
The museum is entirely dedicated to
the history of the lace production in
Burano. It is situated next to the school
of this art, school established in 1872
by the countess Adriana Marcello Zon.

Francesco Guardi today preserved at the Louvre. The
subjects portrayed are the
main ceremonial moments
regarding the figure of the
Doge as it is clear from the
title of the exhibition: “Canaletto – Brustolon, The
Ducal Feasts. Copper plates
and Prints from the collections of the Correr Museum”.
It can be viewed at the
Ca’Rezzonico Museum until
November 6th, 2006 –

The scenes portrayed include
the Doge’s election, his
Coronation at the ‘Scala dei
Giganti’ at the Ducale Palace,
the departure from the

of the sea, ancient Venetian
feast celebrating the union of
the Republic and the Sea), the
Carnival celebrations on the
last Thursday before Lent,
the visit to the island of the
‘Salute’, the religious parade
on the day of the Corpus
Domini, the Banquet. Twelve
scenes captured by the talented hand of the “vedutista”
par excellance and exhibited
altogether for the first time
ever. Canaletto’s works minutely describe all the details of
the scenes: buildings, furniture, boats, clothes, scenographic backgrounds.
On the other hand Brustolon
has transferred on his copper
plates the marvellous works
of Canaletto with an extraordinary ability and faithfulness. On display also the
‘camera ottica’ (or camera
obscura), used by some
Flemish artists, like Vermeer
and Vanvitelli but also by
Canaletto, who had chosen it
as the master instrument of
the landscape artists. In the
XIX century, it gave birth to
the camera.

L’interno è adornato con cornici, timpani curvilinei e triangolari, e opere dei più importanti
pittori greci dell’epoca.
“San Giorgio dei Greci”, the most ancient and
famous Greek church in the West, testifies to
the relationship that Venice had with that
community. Greek merchants frequently
stopped by in Venice, already at the time of
the Byzantine Empire – which had good trade
relations with the Republic. Their settlement in
Venice was favoured after the Fourth Crusade
(1204). The Church was built between 1539
and 1573 with authorization of the Pope. It was
further embellished thanks to donations and
bequests left by the Venetian aristocracy
which cultivated business and friendship relations with the community. The simple but at
the same time massive church has a sloping
bell-tower – which was built between 1587
and 1603 – and on the outside it is decorated with a mosaic portraying Christ the
Saviour. On the inside it is decorated with curvilinear and triangular gables and with
works of the most famous painters of the time.
San Giorgio dei Greci, la chiesa greca più antica e famosa in Occidente, testimonia il rapporto che Venezia ebbe con questa comunità. Gia all’epoca
dell’Impero Bizantino, che manteneva strette relazioni commerciali con la
Repubblica, la presenza di mercanti greci in città era frequente, e il loro insediamento fu agevolato dopo la Quarta Crociata (1204). Ottenuto il permesso del
papa, la chiesa fu costruita tra il 1539 e il 1573 e abbellita grazie anche a donazioni e lasciti dell’aristocrazia veneziana, che coltivava rapporti d’affari e d’amicizia con la comunità. E’ semplice ed imponente, dotata di un pittoresco campanile inclinato costruito tra il 1587 e il 1603, e decorata all’esterno da un mosaico con il Cristo Salvatore. L’interno è adornato con cornici, timpani curvilinei e
triangolari, e opere dei più importanti pittori greci dell’epoca.

was rebuilt during the 17th century and,
at the beginning of the 18th century, it
was modified also its aspect, facing now
the Grand Canal: the new façade made
by the architect Domenico Rossi. The
church contains a veritable compendium of Venetian 18th -century paintings including an early work by Tiepolo.

This church was probably built in the 9th
The church has Byzantine origins, but
very few remains of the ancient building, modified during the XV century
and then restored at the beginning of
the XIX by the architect Davide Rossi.
He perfectly harmonized his NeoClassical choises with the original late
Gothic structure.

Built in the middle of 1300, this church changed its original name (San
Cristoforo) in Madonna dell’Orto
when an imagine of the Virgin, found
in a garden nearby, was brought in the
church itself. It is a typical Venetian
Gothic religious buildings. It was
Tintoretto’s parish church and he is
buried with his family in the chapel to
the right of the high altar.

Legend has it that the church was
built on the ancient Olivolo island,

In the middle of the 17th century,
Venice was struck by a terrible plague; in order to free the city, the
Republic of Venice’s Senate decided
that a church should have been built,
dedicated to the Virgin, asking her for
Health (salute). Between eleven plans
presented, it was chosen the one by
Baldassarre Longhena and works started in 1631. He designed a temple
having a central area on an octagonal
plan, dominated by a huge dome
with great arches.

Madonna Bizantina” work from the
13th-century Greek-Byzantine school.
Events: every year on November 21 the
inhabitants process to the Salute for a

According to the legend, this is one of
the eight churches founded by St.
Magno, Bishop of Oderzo, in the VII
century, and dedicated to the Virgin
who appeared in a dream to the
Bishop. However, the church, as we
can see it nowadays, was built in 1492
by Mauro Codussi, the leading architect of the early Venetian Renaissance.
The building has a Greek cross pattern, with three naves and the roof in
the shape of a cross vault.

One of the greatest examples of Palladio’s
architecture, and by some considered his
masterpiece, this church was built as a
result of a motion carried by the Senate
after the plague that struck Venice in
1576.
It is a votive temple dedicated to the
Redeemer.

church in Venice. After S. Marco, this

It is one of the most beautiful VenetianByzantine buildings of the 12th century.
The exterior of the hexagonal apse is
very interesting, both for its architectural
beauty and the wealth of its decorative
elements. Five columns of Greek marble
divide the interior into three naves.

The old church, which belonged to the
nuns of the convent bearing the same
name, is located near the main church,
which was built by Codussi between
1480 and 1500. The new façade is a
typical example of Venetian Renaissance. Two rows of columns with beautiful capitals divided the interior into
three aisles. The great altar is surmounted by a cross vault and a hemispherical dome. The stunning interior is literally covered with paintings.

SANTA MARIA DEL ROSARIO
CHIESA DEI GESUATI
Built by the Carmelites and dedicated
to Saint Mary of Nazareth, it was designed by B. Longhena. The façade,
made of Carrara marble, is an example of the Venetian Baroque style.
Once there was also a marvellous
vault frescoed by G.B. Tiepolo; unfortunately, in 1915 it was destroyed by
Austrian bombs.
To see: sculptures, gilt and polychromatic decorations and the fine marbles.
This is an 11th century VenetianByzantine building in the form of a
Romanic Basilica. It is the oldest
monument of this type preserved in
the lagoon. The simple and solemn
interior is made up of precious marbles and gilt mosaics.
To see: the mosaics of the small apse on
ble portal attributed to Bartolomeo Bon.
The interior is divided into three wide
longitudinal Greek marble naves, the
presbytery has interesting inlaid wooden
choir stalls and the ceiling is shaped like
an inverted ship’s hull.

Battesimo di Cristo” by Paris Bordone.
The church of the Jesuits was built
between 1726 and 1735, it was commissioned by Dominicans, after they
took the place of the Jesuits, in order to
replace the small church that still stands
beside it. Giorgio Massari was the author
of the church’s design and of the internal
decoration, assisted by two great artists
of the period: Giambattista Tiepolo and
Gianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, with
its single nave, side chapels and a deep
presbytery, is beautifully balanced.

Piazzetta and “La Crocifissione” by
Tintoretto.
The church of S. Giovanni Elemosinario
was founded before 1071, but nothing
remains of the primitive building, due to
the devastating fire that swept through
the Rialto area in 1514. The current
building has simple and somewhat classical interiors, richly decorated with
many works: token of the special devotion of the school of arts and trades that
used the church premises.

Pordenone and the frescoes in the
cupola came to light again during the
restoration work.

building is a splendid Renaissance architecture example. The elegant double

“health” where the plagued
and – in a more recent past –
the mentally ill used to be
confined. Each of them with
their own past and nature to
be discovered.
It is during the first sunny
days of spring that they are
most welcoming. As if they
had hibernated throughout
winter thus appearing reserved, inhospitable, hard to
comprehend.
But, they are livened up by
the first sun of the new season, yet they preserve their
tranquillity and their own
identity. In these enchanted
places time seems to have
stopped. The slowness of the
sunny afternoons, the windows with their slightly
open shutters, the lockless
doors merely covered by
coloured plastic curtains
through which the rumours
coming from the kitchen and
the lazy after lunch chatter
flow. Spots of paradise which
enable us to tell an unusual
story of Venice.

chiuse, inospitali, di difficile
comprensione. Con il primo
sole si animano. Di quel tanto
che basta per restare isole di
pace. Per non perdere la propria identità. All’interno di
questi luoghi incantati il
tempo sembra riposarsi. La
lentezza dei pomeriggi assolati, le finestre dagli scuri socchiusi, le porte che non hanno
serratura, ma solo delle tende
di plastica colorata da cui passano i rumori delle cucine e
quelli delle chiacchiere svogliate del dopopranzo. Angoli
di paradiso che ci permettono
di raccontare una storia diversa di Venezia.

L’
isola d’oro, questo era il nome del Lido di Venezia
per tutta la prima metà del Novecento, è una sottile striscia di terra che separa la laguna e la città dal
mare Adriatico. Lunga quasi 14 chilometri, stretta non più
di 300 metri, raccoglie numerose bellezze naturalistiche e
storiche. La parte esposta al mare è per un lungo tratto
caratterizzata da costruzioni settecentesche, dette i
"Murazzi", che si estendono quasi fino alla piazza del
Casinò (non più aperto come sala da gioco) dove, nei
primi quindici giorni di settembre si svolge la Mostra internazionale del cinema di Venezia. Verso il centro dell'isola, l'architettura si fa ricca di edifici in stile liberty e di parchi verdi. Segnato dal "Tempio Votivo" eretto dopo la
prima guerra mondiale, il "Lungolaguna" (riviera Santa
Maria Elisabetta), porta a San Nicolò dove un tempo si trovava la più grande fortificazione dell'isola. A pochi passi,
e solo con prenotazione, è possibile ammirare l'antico
Cimitero Israelitico del 1389. Ma il nome di isola d’oro si
deve al pregio della spiaggia, con alle estremità (San
Nicolò, ma soprattutto gli Alberoni) delle antiche dune
naturali di sabbia fine e dorata. Qui è ancora possibile
prendere il sole nelle spiagge libere, mentre i veneziani, i
maggiori frequentatori di questa località balneare, usano
la "Capanna", una grande cabina fissa con veranda e
tenda, che quotidianamente (i bagni chiudono alle 19)
occupano per passare le giornate d’estate, a pochi minuti
dal luogo di lavoro.

he ‘Lido di Venezia’, also called ‘the island of gold’
during the first half of the 20th century, is a narrow stretch of land separating the lagoon and the city from the
Adriatic Sea. The island, spreading for almost 14 km in length
and for no more than 300 metres in width, treasures numerous
naturalistic and historical beauties. The side looking onto the
Sea is characterised by a number of 18th century buildings,
also called the “Murazzi” stretching up to ‘piazza del Casinò’
(casino square, today no longer used as a gambling house). It
is here that the Venice International Film Festival is held during
the first two weeks of September. The central part of the island
stands out for its richness in Liberty-style buildings and for its
green areas. The “Lungolaguna” (the Santa Maria Elisabetta
riviera) – marked by the “Tempio Votivo” (the votive temple),
built after the second world war – leads to ‘San Nicolò’ which
once hosted the largest fortification of the island. Just a few
steps away, you will find the 1389 Israelite cemetery which is
visitable only with booking. Yet, the island owes the name ‘the
city of gold’ to its marvellous seashore with its ancient natural
dunes of fine and golden sand situated at its ends, i.e. at San
Nicolò and ,above all, at ‘Alberoni’. Sunbathing is still allowed
in the ‘spiagge libere’ (public beaches) whereas Venetians –
accounting to the majority of the island’s visitors – usually use
the “Capanna”, i.e. a large wooden ‘cabin’ with small veranda
and curtain situated on private beaches. It is in these places,
not too far from their places of work, that locals spend their
summer days. These private beaches close at 7 p.m..

Lo sviluppo del Lido di Venezia inizia dalla costruzione dei primi stabilimenti balneari, intorno al 1850 e trova il suo massimo splendore alla fine degli anni ’30.
In quel periodo, da tutto il mondo, fioccano le commissioni ad architetti, soprattutto veneziani, per la costruzione di ville estive. La ricchezza di committenza e la quasi assoluta libertà di progettare in un ambiente semideserto consentono di sperimentare al Lido le novità di quella “art nouveau” che in Italia sarà
chiamata “Liberty”. Il nostro percorso può cominciare da villa Monplaisir in Gran
Viale, spesso definita uno dei più significativi edifici di stile Liberty in Italia. E poi
in via Lepanto l’hotel Villa Otello e la spledida villa Romanelli, solo per fare degli
esempi. Non si possono però dimenticare l’hotel Des Bains e l’hotel Excelsior.
Furono i veneziani Raffaello e Francesco Marsich che idearono e realizzarono
l’Hotel Des Bains, in completo stile Liberty, inaugurato la sera del 5 luglio del
1900. La sera del 21 luglio 1908, si festeggiava l’apertura dell’Hotel Excelsior.
The Liberty Island
The Venice Lido’s development began in around 1850 with the construction of
the first seaside resorts, and culminated in the late ’30s. In that period commissions to build summer villas rained down on architects from all over the
world, but mainly from Venice. Their customers’ wealth and the almost absolute freedom to design in a semi-deserted area allowed experimenting at the Lido
with a style called “art nouveau”, which in Italy would be called “Liberty”. Our
tour could begin with Monplaisir Villa in Gran Viale, often defined as one of the
most significant art nouveau buildings in Italy. And then on to via Lepanto’s
Hotel Villa Otello and the splendid Romanelli Villa. The details are left to the
attentive eyes of the most observant visitors, but the Hotel Des Bains and the
Hotel Excelsior cannot be overlooked, just to mention a few examples. The
Venetian architects Raffaello and Francesco Marsich designed and built the
Hotel Des Bains, inaugurated on 5 July 1900. In the evening of 21 July 1908
people were celebrating the opening of the Hotel Excelsior.

The Silence of Torcello
Torcello is perhaps the most romantic island of the Venetian lagoon. Today it is almost inhabited but it once was
one of the most flourishing and populous centres of the ancient Venice. A magical place at the heart of the lagoon.
Torcello è forse la più romantica isola della laguna veneziana. Praticamente disabitata, era uno dei nuclei
più floridi e densamente popolati dell’antica Venezia. Un luogo magico in mezzo alla laguna.

Attila's Throne
a storia di Torcello rappresenta ancora oggi una sfida.
Plinio, nella sua descrizione della "Decima Regio",
chiamava quest’isola “Venetia” ancor prima che il
nome venisse assunto da tutta la regione. I risultati delle
ricerche archeologiche testimoniano strette connessioni con
la vicinissima Altino, a quel tempo inserita in un contesto
topografico lagunare e costiero. Un esempio di come alle
principali direttrici stradali (la via Annia e la via Claudia
Augusta) si affiancasse dunque la rotta marittima, che aveva
i propri scali in sbocchi portuali attrezzati. In tale quadro, le
isole della laguna dovettero svolgere senza dubbio un ruolo
ben preciso, offrendo approdi e stazioni intermedie che
sicuramente favorirono il popolamento. Alcuni scavi degli
anni ’70 hanno evidenziato a Torcello stratigrafie di epoca
romana, una testimonianza che permette agli storici di ipotizzare che l’isola fosse popolata anche prima che vi si rifugiassero i profughi altinati, i quali, nel caso contrario, avrebbero scelto luoghi già conosciuti e abitati. Nell’anno 638 il
vescovo cattolico di Altino si trasferì a Torcello (ciò lascia
presumere che vi sia trasferita gran parte della popolazione)
e nel 639 venne fondata la Basilica di Santa Maria. Torcello
ebbe il suo maggiore sviluppo fra i secoli VII e X, dovendo
la sua floridità al commercio, alimentato dapprima dalle
saline e poi dai traffici sempre più estesi.

Wandering around Torcello
Torcello is perhaps the most
romantic of all the islands of the
Venetian lagoon. Today it is almost
deserted but it was one of the most
prosperous and populated areas of
the ancient Venice. From the vaporetto stop, the only road you will
encounter is ‘Fondamenta dei
Borgognoni’ along which you will
reach in a few minutes the
‘Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta’
(1). Before reaching the ancient
cathedral you cannot miss the
famous ‘Ponte del Diavolo’ (3) –
bridge of the devil –, one of the few
bridges left in the lagoon without a
parapet. The cathedral will offer visitors an extraordinary mosaic of the
Last Judgment dating back to the
XII-XIII century. Outside the cathedral stands out what today is known
as the Throne of Attila, once used
by the tribunes of the ancient Rome
to administer law. Close to the
cathedral you can also find the
‘Church di Santa Fosca’(2) (XI century) and ‘Museo dell’Estuario’ (4)
storing precious finds of the Roman
period. Along a side canal, a beautiful XVIII century house with a trim
garden and swimming-pool covers
the rests of a crypt which was built
directly on the mud probably in the
10th century. What renders Torcello most fascinating is its silence, the
atmosphere that can be sensed in
the shade of the wisteria, the full
saviour of the food prepared in the
few inns existing in the island.

Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (1). Prima di arrivare all’antica cattedrale, non si può perdere il famoso Ponte del Diavolo (3),
uno dei pochi rimasto senza
parapetti in laguna. La cattedrale
offre al visitatore uno spettacolare
mosaico del Giudizio Universale
risalente al XII-XIII secolo.
All’esterno spicca quello che
ormai è nominato il Trono di Attila,
utilizzato un tempo dai tribuni per
amministrare la giustizia. A breve
distanza si può visitare la Chiesa
di Santa Fosca (2) (XI secolo) e il
Museo dell’Estuario (4) che raccoglie preziosi reperti dell’epoca
romanica. Lungo un canale laterale, una bella casa settecentesca con giardino ben curato e
piscina, copre i resti di una cripta
costruita direttamente sul fango,
forse del X secolo. E' quanto
rimane del convento di monache
benedettine, distrutto in epoca
napoleonica. Quel che affascina
di Torcello è il suo silenzio, l’atmosfera che si respira all’ombra dei
glicini e il gusto florido del cibo
nelle poche locande dell’isola.

The bridge still maintains
its original design and is one of the few bridges left without parapet. The name recalls the
legend of a woman and of her Austrian lover.
The devil in person used to go up this bridge
every 24th December.
Founded in 1870,
the Museum of Torcello gathers, in its fourteenth-century small buildings of the
‘Consiglio’ and of the ‘Archivio’, archaeological finds from the lagoon.

Finds of the Estuary Museum
he history of Torcello is still today considered a challenge. Plinio, in his description of the “Decima Regio”
used to call this island ‘Venetia’ before the name was
used from the entire region. The results of archaeological
researches testify to deep bonds with the close city of Altino
which at that time was inserted in a lagoon and inshore
topographic context. An example of how Along the two
main roads - Via Annia and Via Claudia Augusta, where
‘via’ means street – there used to be a maritime route which
had its calls in equipped ports. In such a framework, the
lagoon islands played a key role in offering landing places
and intermediate stations thus favouring the populating of
the area. Excavations in Torcello dating back to the seventies have brought to light stratigraphies of the Roman
period, a proof which enables historians to assume that the
island was populated even before the arrival of refugees
from Altino, who would have otherwise chosen inhabited
places they were already acquainted with. In 638, a
Catholic bishop moved to Torcello – which leads us to
believe that so did the entire population – and in 639 ‘the
Basilica di Santa Maria’ was founded. Torcello saw its maximum development between the VII and X centuries owing
its prosperity to trade, initially fuelled by salt works and
later by world-wide routes.

most beautiful side in the late
summer afternoons when the
sun gently touches the corners
of the houses. Once you get
off the vaporetto – motorboat –
the only road you can take is
‘Via Marcello’, then on the left
you will walk along ‘Fondamenta di San Mauro’ on ‘Rio
degli Assassini’. A route that, in
a few minutes, brings you to
‘Via Galuppi’ and to the
homonymous square (1), which is the main one in the island.
Here, you can visit the

stese al sole. Il paradiso dei fotografi. E’ questa la
stagione in cui Burano mostra il suo volto migliore. D’estate le case sembrano esplodere di luce, e gli abitanti sembrano ingaggiare una gara fra chi possiede la
tinta più forte. I pescatori dovevano vedere le loro case
da lontano, ma sembra anche che questi colori fossero
quelli avanzati dopo aver dipinto le imbarcazioni.
Ora questi colori fanno parte delle tradizioni e il comune ha deciso di tutelarli impedendo a chiunque comperi
una casa nell’isola di dipingere gli edifici con tonalità
diverse da quelle trovate. L’itinerario che le guide turistiche propongono è sempre lo stesso e si ripete da sempre. Le offerte commerciali che quest’isola offre non
appannano il fascino di un incantevole posto, che continua a preservare un’atmosfera unica. Che andrebbe assaporata in barca. Magari a remi, nelle giornate di primavera.
I veneziani spesso lo fanno e ne restano estasiati ogni
volta. Il turista che viene da Venezia via acqua, con un
viaggio di 40 minuti in mezzo alla laguna, passando con
il vaporetto vicino a isole in rovina che ricordano le
dominazioni della "serenissima" repubblica, a Burano
scopre un dedalo di "calli" e "fondamente" su piccoli
canali. Qui, anche il fotografo dilettante può trovare l’ispirazione del professionista.

he island of fairy tales, of bright colours, of the fishnets lying under sun. The paradise for photographers. It is in spring that Burano reveals its most
beautiful side. In summer colours truly come alive as
they jostle amongst themselves, competing to stand out
as the most brightly coloured house. True, the fishermen
had to be able to see the houses from faraway, but apparently the paint in question was left over after the boats
had been painted. Those colours now belong to tradition
and the Municipality has decided they are to be safeguarded. Anyone who intends to buy a house in Burano
is not allowed to repaint the house of a different colour
from the original one. The itineraries that tour guides propose are always the same over the decades. The handicraft products that the island offers only enhance the allure of this charming place which keeps withholding a simply unique atmosphere. The best way of viewing the
island is by boat, and best of all with a rowing boat, in
the spring days. Venetians, who often come here in this
season, are spellbound time and again. Tourists coming
from Venice across the lagoon on a 40-minute trip –
bypassing abandoned islands that hark back to the period
of the Serenissima Republic – discover in Burano a maze
of ‘calli’ (alleys) and ‘fondamenta’ (larger roads) running
along narrow canals. Here, even the amateur photographer feels inspired just as a professional would.

Wandering around Murano
The island of glass can be reached
with a vaporetto from ‘Fondamente Nuove’ in around ten minutes. By getting off at the stop
‘Colonna’ you can walk along
‘Fondamenta dei Vetrai’ – were
‘vetrai’ means glass-makers – that
will boast the main, and perhaps
the only, activity of the island. The
first historical reference of our
route is the ‘Church of San Pietro
Martire’ (2), consecrated in 1417,
containing works by Bellini,
Tintoretto and Veronese. Once
you have passed ‘Fondamenta
Cavour’ and ‘Fondamenta Giustinian’ – with its fifteenth century
palaces – cross the ‘Vivarini’bridge
on the Grand Canal and carry on,
on the right, along ‘Riva Longa’
where you will encounter the
Museum of glass (3) that gathers
more than four thousand works of
art. If you carry on along the same
road you will reach the ‘Basilica di
Santi Maria e Donato’ (4). We

L’isola del vetro si raggiunge da
Fondamente Nuove in una decina di minuti di vaporetto.
Scendendo alla fermata Colonna, ci si può incamminare
lungo la Fondamenta dei Vetrai
che fa mostra di un’arte che
ancora oggi costituisce la principale, e forse l’unica, attività dell’isola. Il primo riferimento storico
del nostro percorso è quello della
chiesa di San Pietro Martire (2),
consacrata nel 1417, che raccoglie opere di Bellini, Tintoretto e
Veronese. Dopo Fondamenta
Cavour e Fondamenta Giustinian (con i rispettivi palazzi quattrocenteschi) si attraversa il
ponte Vivarini sul canal grande,
e poi, sulla destra, si percorre
Riva Longa dove si incontra il
Museo del vetro (3) che raccoglie circa quattro mila pezzi d’arte. Proseguendo, si raggiunge la
basilica di Santi Maria e Donato
(4). Consigliamo l’escursione di
prima mattina per poi proseguire
il proprio percorso in direzione
Burano.

Glass school. It was named after Vincenzo
Zanetti, abbot and scholar of the art of glass,
who founded a drawing school for glass-makers
in 1862. The new school carries on the work
begun by the old school but aims at providing
new generations of glass-makers with a more
complete background.
Church of “San Pietro Martire”. It was
founded in 1348 in honour of San Giovanni
Evangelista. It was destroyed by a fire, rebuilt
in 1511 and dedicated to San Pietro Martire.

“Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato”.
The building is the
ancient Palace of the Bishops of Torcello. It
hosts the most outstanding historical exhibition of Murano glass with items produced
between the 15th and the 20th century.
Its foundation seems to date back to the 7th
century. The Basilica was completed in 1140
as stated in the floor mosaic. It was consecrated in 1125 and it is one of the most ancient
religious buildings of Venice.

n distretto industriale in piena regola attorno al
quale si e’ costruita ricchezza e fama. E’ un magico incontro tra acqua e fuoco quello che la storia
ha regalato all’isola di Murano, isola consegnata all’incorruttibilità del tempo per la lavorazione del vetro, che
vi avviene da quasi un millennio.
La tecnica di Domenico detto “Phiolario”, prima dell’anno mille, riportata dai testi, era quella della soffiatura
eseguita con quegli strumenti che le attività vetrarie
tardo-romane avevano tramandato. Da quelle tutto parte,
qui a Murano come nel resto d’Europa. Solo che qui, in
questo distretto industriale ante litteram, ci si giovava dei
contatti commerciali che la serenissima possedeva con il
vicino e lontano oriente.
Ci volle poco perciò a fare dell’arte vetraia muranese la
più apprezzata e la più sofisticata del mondo conosciuto. Dalle celebri fornaci islamiche e dai popoli di antica
tradizione vetraria come i Fenici, i Siriani e gli Egiziani,
i Veneziani seppero raccogliere segreti e tecniche, strumenti e colori che conferirono alla produzione lagunare
una singolarità riconosciuta da tutti.
E fra tradizione e cultura millenaria si è inserito negli
ultimi cinquant’anni il disegno: una rinascita che ha portato il vetro muranese fra le grandi collezioni d’arte
moderna e contemporanea delle gallerie di tutto il
mondo.

he history of the city of Murano has seen a magical
encounter between water and fire. It is an island
that, thanks to glass working - a craft which has
been carried on for about a thousand years - is still untouched by the corruption of time. Little has changed along
the “calli” and “fondamenta” since the time in which a
Benedictine monk, Domenico also called “fiolario”
(Phiolario), used to produce phials for home usage before the year one thousand.
His technique, as stated in written texts, consisted in
blowing glass by means of instruments passed on by the
late-Roman glassblowing activities. It is from those activities that this art developed in Murano and across
Europe. The Murano industrial district benefited from the
trade bond that the Serenissima Republic had with the
Middle and Far East. The Murano art of glassblowing
soon became the most renowned and sophisticated in the
world. From the famous Islamic furnaces and from the
Phoenicians, the Syrians and Egyptians - who had a longstanding glassmaking tradition - Venetians learned
secrets, techniques, instruments and colours that have
rendered this lagoon production unique. In the past fifty
years, drawings have made their way through centurylong tradition and culture.
A fundamental renewal that has enabled Murano glass to
reach the most famous modern and contemporary art collections of world galleries.

ne ends up forgetting certain typical odours of the city. The ‘freschin’, for instance, the smell of fish dried under the sun which
once intensively spread onto the Venetian ‘campi’ (small squares). For two months now the cuttlefish have been coming to the lagoon
to lay eggs. A large number of them will never return into the open sea
and will die here. Cuttlefish has always been a very much appreciated
dish by Venetians. Indeed, Venetians are accustomed to meeting with the
entire family on their small boats in late summer to catch this type of fish.
Our suggested recipe is “le seppie in nero alla veneziana” (black cuttlefish Venetian style). Who is bold enough to experience odours belonging
to the past, a part from the ‘freschin’, should try the ‘sepe seche’ (dried
cuttlefish). You can prepare them by using large cleaned cuttlefish. Keep
the head and the stomach (‘pansa’ in Venetian dialect). Insert two or
three small sticks on the side linked with a string so that they can be entirely exposed to the sun. The fish has to be sundried and, if stored in a dry
place, it may last up to one year.

Black sauce:
1 kg of cuttles, 1 onion
1 garlic clove
1 spoon of tomato sauce
1/2 glass of dry white wine
sunflower oil
chopped parsley
1/2 glass of water
Clean the cuttlefish, cut it in thin long slices,
keep the small bag with the cuttlefish ink. Pour
some oil in a pan, add a clove of garlic, a chopped onion and the previously cut cuttlefish, salt
and stew softly. Cut the bags of ink and pour the
ink in a bowl with 1/2 glass of water, add the
whole to the cuttlefish with some white wine and the pulped tomato.
When the cuttlefish has softened liquidize and colander one part of the whole till you
have obtained a thick and creamy sauce. Heat the broth up, add a bay leaf and boil the
cuttlefish for 10 minutes. Pour some black sauce on the plate, decorate with a plain boiled cuttlefish and with spicy pepper. Season with a drizzle of oil.

odori. Il freschin, ad esempio, l’odore del pesce che secca al sole
che si spargeva intenso un tempo sui campi veneziani. Da un paio
di mesi le seppie sono venute in laguna per depositare la loro uova.
Molte non torneranno più in mare aperto e finiranno i loro giorni qui.
Da sempre le seppie sono un alimento che riscuote fortuna nelle tavole dei veneziani. Molti di questi, riuniti in intere famiglie, in estate
avanzata, le pescano dalle loro piccole barche. Proponiamo qui sotto
un modo di preparare e impiattare una delle ricette tradizionali, “le
seppie in nero alla venessiana”. Chi però, temerario oltre al freschin,
vuol sperimentare la gioia di una riscoperta, e di odori cari al tempo
passato, provi le sepe seche: seppie grandi pulite come di consueto
lasciando attaccata testa e la pansa (pancia) distese incastrando fra le
alette due o tre bastoncini che, legati con un spaghetto, consentano
una maggiore esposizione al sole. Le seppie esposte si seccheranno e,
conservate in luogo asciutto, si manterranno anche per un anno.

SEPPIE NERE ALLA VENEZIANA
Ingredienti per 4 persone:
2l brodo vegetale, alloro
6 seppie medie pulite
olio di oliva del Garda.
Salsa Nera
1 kg seppie, 1 cipolla
1 spicchio d'aglio
1 cucchiaio salsa pomodoro
1/2 bicchiere di vino bianco
olio di semi di girasole
prezzemolo tritato
1/2 bicchiere di acqua
Pulire le seppie, tagliarle a julienne, conservare
il sacchettino nero. Versare l'olio in un tegame,
aggiungere uno spicchio d'aglio, una cipolla tritata e le seppie tagliate a listarelle, salare e stufare dolcemente. In una ciotola rompere i sacchetti di nero in 1/2 bicchiere d’acqua, aggiungerlo alle seppie assieme al vino bianco e al passato di pomodoro. Quando le seppie sono
tenere frullare e passare al colino una parte sino ad ottenere una salsa densa e cremosa.
Scaldare il brodo, aggiungere la foglia di alloro e bollire le seppie per 10 minuti. Versare
nel piatto un po’ di salsa nera e decorare con una seppia bianca bollita e peperoncino piccante. Condire con un filo d’olio del Garda.

The large exhibition displaying over 150 works, edited by Vittorio Sgarbi, will be hosted by Palazzo
Roverella. The first stage of a route which will unveil altar pieces, frescos and canvases embellishing
monasteries, convents, parishes, villas and palaces of this city situated between two rivers. A route
which passes through the power of the Serenissima and of the Ducato Estense in a span going from
the XV to the XVIII century. On display works by Giovanni Bellini, Giambattista Tiepolo, Dosso and

Riccardo Licata, Emilio Vedova, Virgilio Guidi, Augusto Murer. But also Martini, Caffè,
Festa, Cropelli, Seibezzi. The most outstanding artists of the Veneto painting, in an exhibition which gathers the most extraordinary personalities of modern and contemporary art.
The merits for the organization of the exhibition – which was launched in 1994 and can be
view until May 2006 – go to the “Galleria Minarte” of Treviso which has brought to light,
over the years, numerous artists that had previously been ignored by the public. Some of the painting displayed are for sale.

che proseguirà fino a maggio 2006, la Galleria Minarte di Treviso, attiva dal 1994, che nel corso degli
anni ha consacrato al pubblico numerosi artisti prima ignorati dalle grandi platee. Alcuni quadri

The project includes five exhibitions (almost all of them exhibited for the first time) hosted in historic buildings like the ‘Museo Civico’ of ‘Piazza del Santo’, the ‘Palazzo del Monte di Pietà’, the ‘Cortile Pensile’
of Palazzo Moroni and the ‘Sottopasso della Stua’, well known to photography lovers for its numerous exhibitions. The exhibitions comprise works by around ten artists including the Swiss Germaine Martin and
