The Bird Cage Journal – House Organ for McGregor Condors Hockey Ryan Spooner deflects Justin Faulk’s point slap shot past Toledo’s Darcy Kuemper for power play game winning goal! Attendance: 19,076 Condor rookie Ryan Spooner lifts Condors over Goaldiggers 3-1! Condors Rinne solid in net with 20 saves. December 8, 2015 McGregor, TX (FP) – Rookie Ryan Spooner continues to have an impressive debut as he gets first star as he leads the McGregor Condors by the visiting Toledo Goaldiggers 3-1. Spooner scored an impressive deflection power play goal on a one timer slap shot from the point off the stick of defenseman Justin Faulk for what turns out to be the game winning goal. “His hand eye coordination is amazing,” commented McGregor’s manager/coach Jesse Cheng after the game. “He timed his deflection on the shot perfectly and (Darcy) Kuemper didn’t have a chance on that shot.” Spooner has scored 3 goals and 6 assists over the last 2 months so far and is fourth overall in points among the Condors since November. Ryan Getzlaf also tallied on the power play for his 15th goal in 30 games played. This is good for 4th overall in goal scoring in the FHL. Alexei Galchenyuk scored on even strength for his 6th goal this season. Pekka Rinne also shined after having time off with Dustin Tokarski in net last home game. Rinne had 20 saves in the win. Marian Gaborik scored for Toledo on the power play in the 3rd period to avoid the shut out. The Condors dominated play out shooting Toledo 31-21, out hit them 28-13, and led in scoring chances 8-7. The Condors would score twice on the power play in the first period. Spooner would set up the first goal on the power play with a nice pass to Ryan Getzlaf at the point. His blast beat Kuemper just 16 seconds into the power play at 2:17 in the first. Then Spooner would score on a great point shot off the stick of Faulk for the 2-0 lead at 7:54 mark. Both sides would skate 4-on-4 after Toledo’s David Desharnais and McGregor’s Brett Connolly would go off with coincidental roughing penalties at 14:22 in the first. Then Getzlaf gets whistled for checking from behind for a Toledo 4-on-3 power play for 24 seconds and then a 5-on-4 power play for 1:36. The Condors killed both power plays and even got a shorthanded chance when Tomas Vanek fires a wrister on net requiring an Kuemper acrobatic pad save to keep the score 2-0. There was no scoring in the second period with both teams playing sloppy with 13 turnovers for Toledo and 5 turnovers for McGregor. The third period had two high light reel goals. McGregor’s Alexei Galchenyuk would race down the right side of the rink leaving a drop pass to Alexei Emelin, who passed cross ice to Ryan Strome, and then found Galchenyuk cycling low in front of the crease for the goal. Then on the Toledo power play Marian Gaborik would make a spectacular double deke by both Getzlaf and defenseman Thomas Hickey for an insider wrister past Rinne to close the score to 3-1 at 8:51 in the third period. Toledo would press getting two odd man rushes with 2014 1st round draft choice Sean Monahan leading the way. But forward Carl Hagelin would shoot wide on the first rush and defenseman Andrej Sustr would be stoned by Rinne on the second rush.
