“Knives on a Plane”
It was recently announced that the TSA is partially lifting a ban on knives on a plane. It is quite specific, so you
have to be very careful. Go to the web site of
www.kniferights.org and it will give you graphics of what is
and what is not allowed. Very informative.
2013 Blade Show
The 2013 Blade Show will be held from May 31 thru
June 2, 2013, at the Cobb Galleria Centre, Atlanta, GA.
You can visit www.bladeshow.com for more information.
Several of our BKC members, including makers and
dealers that regularly attend the Badger Knife Show, will be
exhibiting at the show.
Those attending will include Cory Martin, photographer, who does the photography at the Badger Knife Show.
He will be available to work with you at the Blade Show.
This is the granddaddy of all knife shows and is definitely worth the effort to attend. See you in Atlanta.
B.S.A. Building Security
Two Volunteers Needed
The Three Harbors Boy Scout Council recently installed
a new building security system. It is a coded digital push
button that must be entered by the person in charge of the
group meeting. The doors can not be blocked open or an
alarm will go off.
Therefore, we need two volunteers at the meeting to
man the upper and lower doors to allow members to enter.
The doors must be manned from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
to allow enough time to have the members come in. Please
do not arrive any earlier than 6:15 p.m. or you will be
standing outside. We will not know the changeable code
until the day before the meeting. If you can volunteer to
man (or woman) one of the doors, please call Bob Schrap
at 414-771-6472 or the club cell phone at 414-379-6819.
Newsletter via E-mail
For those of you who have computer access, you can
view the Club newsletter at our web site at
www.badgerknifeclub.org and click on “newsletter.” We
want to eventually be able to e-mail your newsletter to you,
although we will still continue to mail printed copies to
those of you who do not have access to a computer.
We are doing this to help reduce the cost of printing
and postage of sending out the newsletter by conventional
mail. This will be a long-term process, since we have to get
your e-mail addresses and prepare the database for future email mailings.
Therefore, if you have an e-mail address, please
advise us by sending an email to [email protected]. In the subject line, please state “Email Newsletter”.
Broken Blades
We were saddened with the news that two of our
long-time members passed away.
Life Member Ken Deerwester on March 4, 2013
Member George Kauffeld on April 5, 2013.
We will fondly remember and miss them. Our condolences go out to their families.

Knife Safety Seminar
Our BKC member and custom knife maker, Dwight
Mason, put together and ran a knife safety seminar for
youngsters at the 2013 Badger Knife Show.
There was a nice group of youngsters that attended Saturday afternoon. The youngsters received instructions on
knife safety and upon completion received a certificate and
a new knife, courtesy of our BKC member and table
holder, Peter Albert.
We are hoping to make this a regular feature at our future knife shows. Thank you, Dwight and Peter, for making
this possible.
2013 Badger Knife Show—Comments
This year’s 30th Annual Badger Knife Show was truly a
success. We received many nice letters and emails from
table holders and attendees. I would like to share a few with
you:
From Joe Seale, table holder from Austin, Texas
writes:
“Many, many thanks for encouraging me to attend the
Badger Knife Show. This past week-end. It was one of the
five best knife shows that I have attended over the past
thirty-five years.
“You and your very capable, friendly, efficient helpers
did a most OUTSTANDING job organizing and conducting the show. There was great attendance, good fellowship,
fine/rare knives and best of all: REKINDLING OLD
FRIENDSHIPS THAT WERE BEGUN NEARLY
FORTY YEARS AGO!
“The hotel facilities were excellent. Their employees
were most courteous and helpful. The continental breakfasts were DELICIOUS. If the Lord is willing, we plan to
be back next year.”
From Dave Eberhart:
“My son and I attended the show Saturday and had a
great time. Very friendly people at the front door, a member of the club came over and asked if my son could have a
pocket knife, of course! There was a great selection of exhibitors and some really fantastic work. They were extremely friendly and encouraged us to handle their knives.
To top it off, one of them said he gives a custom knife
away each year to a youngster and this year it was for my
son. WOW. Great show, thanks.”
(Editor: That knife maker is Larry Franklin from
Stoughton, WI. Thanks, Larry.)
Show photos courtesy of Deborah Schulze.
Had a live two-hour radio feed from the show
WJVL FM and WCLO AM with announcer
Rob West pictured with Bob Schrap.
Doug Alcorn II did a flint knapping demonstration during the
entire show, drawing much interest from our table holders and
attendees! And he sold his first knife at our show!
Thank you Bob Schrap for successfully
running 30 BKC Shows! And for organizing
the BKC meetings. Job well done!

Black Hat Award Winner
R. W. Wilson
Since 2005, the Black Hat Award has been given in the
memory of Mick and Judy Koval. Mick and Judy were the
owners of Koval Knife Supply and they were well liked and
known by many knife makers throughout the country. They
both passed away in a short span in time. Mick always wore
a black cowboy hat—hence the Black Hat Award. The
award was given to persons in recognition of honesty, integrity and fellowship in and outside the world of knives
and knife collecting.
This year the Black Hat Award was presented to R. W.
Wilson. “R.W.” is a true good-will ambassador of the knife
and knife making industry. His positive and upbeat attitude
is ever present. He travels extensively in the knife circuit.
Past recipients of the Black Hat Award include: Bob
Schrap, Col. Joe Fox, Ed and Kathy Wormser, Hank
Rummell, Kevin Cashen, Ed Brandsey, Wayne and
Pam Robbins, and Bob Stachowicz.
Congratulations to R. W., job well done
Winners!
This year’s Custom Makers’ Drawing knife was a
Mokume Letter Opener made by Chuck Hawes and the
mokume by Mike Sakmar.
The lucky winner of the 2013 Badger Knife Show Custom Makers’ Drawing was Paul Wuethrich from Maple
Grove, MN when his blue card was drawn on a custom knife
he purchased from Dwight Mason.
The lucky winner of the Win-A-Knife drawing was
Emily Lindquist from Elkhorn, WI. The knife was a
Leatherman Multi-tool furnished by the Club.
Congratulations and Thank You to our winners for participating.
Thank You! Thank You!
