Since Time Immemorial: “Our Story” The Story of Kitigan Zibi Anishinàbeg “In 1951, Cartier made his third and final voyage to Turtle Island. Spain had already claimed the southern-most regions of Turtle Island and to counter this, the King of France ordered Cartier to establish a settlement along the St. Lawrence in the name of France. Cartier brought with him a few hundred French Colonists, mainly convicted felons, and they built a settlement, which they named Charlesbourg-Royal, not far from Stadacona. After the kidnapping of Donnaconna, the Stadaconans were angry and they prepared to defend their territory. Cartier again failed to cross the Lachine Rapids. He believed that beyond these rapids lay the great passage to the Orient. That spring, Cartier sailed for France with his colonists, never returned to Turtle Island. In July of 1542, sieur de Roberval landed at Charlesbourg-Royal with 150 colonists to build a permanent settlement. Angry Stadaconans attacked and besieged them inside their settlement. Over the winter of 1543, the besieged French became sick with scurvy and more than fifty of them died. In the spring, Roberval and his survivors returned to France. After that, France lost interest in the New World until sixty years later, when furs became important to the European economy.” McGregor, Stephen. Since Time Immemorial: “Our Story”. Maniwaki.
