Worn profiles reduce capacity and increase fiber content in the reject. The process is progressive and irreversible and will end in the require replacement of the screen basket. Renewing the chrome layer maintains the contour of the profile bars, and hence the screening technology. Chrome is one of the most wear resistant materials which also can be applied repitively. This makes rechroming the most economical way to manage wear in screen baskets. As well as bar-type baskets, perforated baskets can be rechromed, using optimized calipers. Preparations necessary by customer Voith Paper sales and service personnel are trained to assess the condition of baskets and determine the need for rechroming. A micrometer measuring tool calibrated for the type of profile gives a reliable indication of the condition of the current chrome layer. Measurement data is compiled in a software tool which generates a report stating the condition of the baskets. During planned shutdowns baskets are to be removed and cleaned, ready for inspection. The actual assessments take up to 30 minutes per basket, depending on their condition. Service intervals Inspection and rechroming intervals are based on the wear pattern of each basket. If raw material composition is very similar, long-term, reliable service intervals can be determined. References Since 1995 Voith Paper has rechromed over 1,750 baskets using this method, the majority for board and packaging paper mills.
