MADEIRA Blandy’s Madeira Wine Company Blandy’s Madeira Wine Company Madeira is one of the most remarkable fine wines of the world. Its unprecedented ability to age, retaining both its freshness and complexity, has long been the hallmark of this iconic fortified wine. John Blandy first set foot on Madeira in 1808 to work in the accounting office of Newton, Gordon, Murdoch, wine merchants in Madeira at the time. Today, the Blandy family continue to own and operate the Madeira Wine Company, preserving a tradition that has lasted for over 200 years and seven generations. The Symington Family have remained as minor shareholders, maintaining an interest in the company that they had managed since 1989. It is through this successful partnership that the company is now the leading producer of premium quality wine on the island. The winemaker, Francisco Albuquerque, has been named “Fortified Wine Maker of the Year” at The International Wine Challenge for 3 years running, reiterating the fact that the company is leading the way in the re-establishment of Madeira as one of the world’s great wines. • 101 102 • Blandy’s Madeira Wine Company MADEIRA Top: Wine aging in “Canteiro” in the Sotão de Amendoa room in the Blandy’s lodge Right: Vineyards in Santana on the North Coast BLANDY’S DUKE OF CLARENCE The UK’s most popular brand of Madeira and undisputed Madeira market leader BLANDY’S 10YO SERCIAL One of the 10yo range of Madeira’s which includes a Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey BLANDY’S ALVADA A distinctive Madeira with a contemporary look to appeal to younger consumers BLANDY’S 1996 COLHEITA MALMSEY One of the special ‘single vintage’ range of wines which includes a Sercial, Verdelho and Bual MADEIRA Below: The Blandy’s ‘Wine Library’ where some of the most precious bottles are stored Blandy’s Madeira Wine Company • 103 Above: Outdoor patio area at the Blandy’s lodge
