Our Bosses Breakfast on 17 January featured
Major General James R. Myles, Commanding General, US Army Aviation and Missile Command. Chapter
Board Member Marc Jacobson organized the event at
the Redstone Officers and Civilians Club with over
110 corporate leaders attending.
General Myles spoke on the impact of BRAC on
Redstone Arsenal, praised the members of Team Redstone for outstanding support to warfighters in OIF
and OEF, praised this great generation of Soldiers for
all that they do and spoke of AMCOM and the Army’s General Myles spoke on the impact of
covenant with their families. He also praised the Red- BRAC on Redstone Arsenal at a recent

Plan to attend 10th Annual Tactical Missiles Conference
The 10th Annual Tactical Missiles Conference
is May 20, 2008 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the
Von Braun Center North Hall. A golf tournament
will precede the conference on May 19 at the Valley Hill Country Club.
The purpose of the conference is to provide
an open forum for the presentation of current
and future Army tactical missile programs in a
collaborative government and industry environment.
The morning session will begin with a Team
Redstone Overview by the Army Aviation and
Missile Command commanding general, Maj.
Gen. James R. Myles. Brig. Gen. Gino Dellarocco,
commanding general of PEO missiles and space,
will provide a State-of-the-PEO discussion.
This is an unclassified conference. Attendance is limited, so attendees are encouraged to

Thank you for being a member of the RedstoneHuntsville Chapter of AUSA. Finally it seems that spring
is in the air and time for spring break / cleaning / training – family and friends activities. You’ll read elsewhere
in this Salute of activities that your Chapter accomplished during the winter months. My praise goes to the
Officers and Board Members who organized and executed these programs and to all of you who volunteered to
help or just turned out to enjoy the activities and camaraderie. It’s time to kick things up another notch.
On 2 April, the Chapter hosts its annual Department
of the Army Civilian of the Year Dinner at the Von Braun

nominees for consideration at the Annual Meeting in
October as AUSA’s 2008 DAC of the Year.

Bulldog Battalion!
At 0600, the morning of February 22nd,
Alabama A&M University (AAMU) Bulldog
Battalion was in the ROTC gym preparing
for the month’s Field Training Exercise
when it was swiftly ambushed by the Association of the United States Army – AUSA.
Cadets of the Bulldog Battalion were called
to formation to receive a free 1-year membership to the AUSA Redstone-Huntsville Chapter of Huntsville, AL. This early morning ceremony signifies the creation of another Redstone-Huntsville ROTC Satellite AUSA Chapter, with 53 charter members.

General Summerlin advised that an element of the ESGR Program is located in
seven Congressional Districts, with some
4,000 volunteers who serve in support of the
Soldier. During 2007, Alabama volunteers
for ESGR worked some 9,184 volunteer
hours in support of the Soldiers. Summerlin said the state ESGR was interested in
partnering with the AUSA, in support of the
same mission—-supporting the Soldier.

Advanced Engineering & Integrated Services
On 1 March, the LCHS JROTC Color
Guard had the opportunity to present the
colors at a Memorial Service for a Vietnam
Veteran in Florence, AL.
The JROTC is preparing for their annual
Military Ball at the Holiday Inn in Decatur,
AL on the 21st of March.
On 3 April, the LCHS JROTC will be having their end of the year Awards Ceremony.
AUSA has been a long time supporter of the
LCHS JROTC program. Steve Humphrey
will present the AUSA award this year to
Cadet Major Ashley Glover.
Lee High School JROTC
The Lee High School General Battalion
has been marching steadily along. The year
began with a trip to Fort Campbell, Kentucky where we visited the Air Assault
School. Cadets have competed in drill team
competitions, and the rifle team is thriving
and has won matches against many of the
schools in our area. A newly initiated physical fitness team is thriving. Cadets have also
participated in several community and service projects along with fundraisers to support both the battalion and community.

Columbia Campus JROTC actually consists of two high schools, New Century
Technology High School (NCTHS) and
Columbia High School (CHS), which coexist on the same campus.

was officially commissioned on July 1, 2008.
This makes them the newest JROTC Program in the state of Alabama.

conducted its Inaugural Awards Day Ceremony.

has held an average of 100 Cadets over the

Buckhorn High School JROTC cadets
look forward to their annual Milatary Ball.
The cadets are in charge of planning the
whole event. They rented the ballroom,
chose the guest speaker (COL Steve Taylor),
made the invitations, planned for a DJ for
music, and they even planned the “Grog”
ceremony which is a military tradition from
long ago that is still performed at military
banquets today. Each senior added a nonalcoholic ingredient that represents a special
meaning to them from JROTC. For example, Cadet Captain Seth Robbins added four
melted push pops to represent all of the
push ups the cadets have done in the JROTC
program.

During the early morning hours of 6 February, Lawrence County was struck by several tornados. The Lawrence County HS

offering. We were always considered the underdogs against a behemoth defense giant. No one ever
imagined that Mobile, Alabama,
would be home to the production of
a new U.S. Air Force tanker and
Airbus’ A330 commercial work. In
the end, however, our journey
proved fruitful. South Alabama
will forever be enriched by this
decision.

Redstone-Huntsville Chapter AUSA
President, Mike Howell, presented a
$500 check to Phyllis Montgomery and
Jennifer Hames of the Redstone Garden
Club. The Garden Club under Joy Parker and their leadership has undertaken
a project to place Christmas Wreaths
on the graves of veterans in Maple Hill
Cemetery and Valhalla Cemetery here in
Huntsville, AL.
This will be an on-going project and
the beautiful wreaths will be used yearafter-year, adding more wreaths each
year.

Dr. John Regner was promoted to VP of the
Defense Systems Group at Teledyne Brown
Engineering.
Cynthia Achorn was named president of Analytical Services Inc. She joined ASI nine years
ago as a program manager and had most recently been VP of strategic services. Achorn succeeded retired Army Major General John Holly who
accepted a position with Lockheed Martin.
Garry Barringer was promoted to VP and general manager of Teledyne Brown CollaborX, a
wholly owned subsidiary of TBE. Barringer had
been VP and COO of CollaborX since 2002. He
replaced John Hawley who retired last year.
Frederick “Rick” Bachtel is a new director on
the Sci-Quest board. Bachtel is general manager
of Alabama operations for Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. He has more than 40 years of experience
in space systems research, technology and development including senior positions with NASA’s
Marshall Space Flight Center and industry.
Ray Bouldin has joined S3’s AMCOM Express
technical team as RDEC task lead for Advanced
Science and Technology Directorate services for
missile and aviation products.
Scott Parker was named chief administrative
officer of Torch Technologies. He was previously
with Computer Sciences Corp.
Jim Jilek has joined BFA Systems Inc. Jilek
will support the Boeing Company in an advanced

the Army Capabilities Integration Center. In his
Army career, he led combat aviation units
throughout the world, including command of
the 6th Cavalry Brigade.
Robert S. Dowling has joined Dynetics as a
member of the business development team.
Dowling has led business development activities
for two of the nation’s largest defense contractors.
Teledyne Brown Engineering Inc. has
inducted Jerry C. Edwards and Gerard K. “Gerry”
Hacker into its Engineering Fellows Program,
recognizing lifelong contributions in science and
engineering. Edwards retired from Teledyne
Brown in 2003 after 34 years with the company.
He contributed to the advancement of digital
telemetry in rocket science, assessments and
archiving of ballistic missile flight test data, ballistic missile signatures and optical background
modeling and tactical sensor laser susceptibility
modeling and testing. Hacker has been the
deputy program manager for the propellants,
pressurants and calibration contract at MSFC for
more than 26 years.
Steve Underwood recently received the inaugural Boeing Integrated and Defense Systems
(IDS) Tester of the Year Award. The award recognizes individuals for superior performance and
continuouas quality improvement to the IDS
Test & Evaluation function’s mission and community.

Cavalry Division.
Sidney Martin has joined Sparta Inc. as a junior logistics analyst working in the lifecycle management division on the system analysis branch
team. Martin was in the Army for more than 23
years, and served two tours in Vietnam, two in
Germany, two in Korea and one in Taiwan. After
retiring from the military, he was a logistics management specialist for Avenger.
Patrick Vaughn has joined Sparta Inc. as an

Ed Blalack has been promoted to president of

Retired Army Major General John Holly is
Lockheed Martin’s new top executive in
Huntsville. Holly was previously the deputy
director of the Missile Defense Agency and the
president of Analytical Services Inc. Holly now
serves as the company’s senior executive in the
area and oversees a panel of VPs representing
the three major Lockheed divisions. His joining
the company coincides with the retirement of
two longtime Lockheed executives here: Steve
Humphrey, VP Army programs, Corporate Business Development, and Bob Drolet, senior director of the Space Systems Division. Holly will fill
Humphrey’s role while Jim Tevepaugh replaces
Drolet, but gets a new title and responsibilities.
Linda Knapp was named vice-president of
finance and administration for Davidson Technologies. Previously she managed TBE’s Technologies Group Business Management Unit.
Henry Compres has joined Sparta Inc. as an

Aerospace Corp. has opened a Huntsville
office to help handle their contract efforts with
the Missile Defense Agency. Michael Fortanbary
will head the local office and Dr. Graham Arnold

Hanks recently received the NASA Silver Snoopy,
an award presented by NASA astronauts for outstanding work in the human spaceflight program.

3D modeling, virtual terrain generation and constructive simulation databases for use in defense,
homeland security and commercial applications.

vice president and chief engineer slot. Dr. Paul
Munafo, a 32-year Marshall Space Flight Center engineer and safety expert, will be respon-
sible for quality control and business development, said Teledyne CEO Rex Geveden.

Ronnie Chronister was named deputy to
the commanding general for the Army Aviation and Missile Life-Cycle Management
Command. He was previously executive
director of AMCOM’s Integrated Materiel
Management Center.
Steven G. Milburn, director of the Targets
Management Office at Redstone Arsenal,
retired Dec. 31 after a combined 46 years of
federal and military service.
Dr. Tom Pieplow was selected as the new
director of the Security Assistance Management Directorate at AMCOM
AUSA Anniston Chapter honors teachers
The Anniston Chapter held its quarterly breakfast
meeting on February 20, 2008 at The Classic on Noble.
Chapter President Major General (Retired) Gerald G.
Watson opened the meeting. After the regular chapter
business concluded, Watson introduced the guest
speaker, Brigadier General Russell Summerlin, from
the Alabama Employer Support to the Guard and
Reserve (ESGR), who gave an overview of what the
ESGR is and what it does.
Among other business, Watson introduced thee
additional special guests. They were Ms. Barbara
Daughtery, Ms. Stephanie Dean, and Ms. Kelley
Hyatt, all 3d grade teachers from Coldwater Elementary School in Bynum, Ala. The teachers were
presented an American flag, encased in a shadow
box frame. This flag was a token of appreciation
from soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division “Big Red
One” who are deployed in Iraq. Each teacher had
given their students an opportunity to write letters
and draw pictures for these deployed Soldiers. This
correspondence was included in AUSA Soldier Support care packages which were shipped overseas to
those soldiers who are supporting the Global War on
Terrorism.
Anniston enjoyed one other special guest at this
meeting, that being Mr. Steve Taylor, Executive Vice
President of the Redstone Huntsville Chapter of AUSA.
Taylor gave an overview of the Redstone-Huntsville
Chapter and thanked the Anniston Chapter for all the
support to the AUSA organization. He also applauded
the Anniston Chapter on the various programs being
sponsored for our soldiers, civilians and families.

Veterans Memorial
On Tuesday, 11 March, the Madison
County Veterans Memorial office at 403
Franklin Street, Huntsville, AL 35801 officially opened with a short program and ribbon-cutting ceremony. State AUSA President Bob Drolet, Huntsville Mayor Loretta
Spencer (AUSA Board Member), David Carney (Chapter VP for NG Affairs) and Steve
Taylor (Chapter Executive VP) took part in
the event. The purpose of the office is to offer
information about the two-year project to
construct a Veterans Memorial in Huntsville
to honor all Veterans, but in particular those
from Madison County who have participated
in our Nation’s wars - World War I, World
War II, Korea, Vietnam through the current
conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The cost of
the project is approximately four million dollars, and construction is to be completed by
Veterans Day in 2009.
The new office is to be staffed by volunteers from Monday thru Friday from 9-4 to
welcome visitors, answer the phones and
take donations for the project. The Redstone-Huntsville AUSA Chapter will provide
volunteers on Wednesday of every week
through project completion. This is a major
commitment for our Chapter, and we welcome our members to become a part of this
project by contacting our coordinator, Kathy
