¿Tú recuerdas cómo fue cuando te viniste de Cuba?
Do you remember how it was when you came from Cuba?
La mudada de Cuba a los Estados Unidos fue algo que pasó
por decisión de mis padres. Ellos quieran venir para este país
debido a la situación del gobierno de Cuba, en la cual ellos
pensaban que no había libertad y no iba a haber oportunidades
para nosotros. Mi padre hablaba algo de inglés en Cuba pero
ninguno de nosotros hablamos inglés. Fue un proceso largo y
difícil, uno aplicaba para venir y eventualmente nosotros
conseguimos una visa para inmigrar legalmente para los
Estados Unidos. Vinimos a Jacksonville porque una de mis tías
se había casado con un marinero norteamericano, muchos años
antes, y él estaba estacionado aquí en la base de Mayport.
Moving from Cuba to the United States was something that my
parents decided. They wanted to come to this country because
of the government situation in Cuba. They thought they had no
liberty and didn’t see any opportunities for us there. My father
spoke some English in Cuba but none of us spoke English.
It was a long and hard process; we applied to come, and
eventually we got a visa to legally immigrate to the United
States. We came to Jacksonville because one of my aunts had
married a North American sailor many years before, and he
was stationed here at the base in Mayport.
Con tu mamá siendo maestra y tu papá ingiero, ¿Qué te
motivo para ser médico?
Mis padres siempre nos dijeron que era muy importante el
estudio. Ellos siempre enfatizaron la importancia de estudiar
cuando llegamos a este país. Ellos no nos forzaron a qué
carrera escoger, pero sí nos enseñaron que había que estudiar,
que había que ir a la universidad y que había que escoger
algo que nos gustara. A mí desde joven me gustaba mucho
la biología, me gustaba la medicina.
¿En que universidad estudiaste?
Para estudiar medicina hay que primero estudiar la universidad
y yo estudié en la Universidad de Miami. Luego, como mucho
cubanos, fui a una universidad llamada Universidad Nacional
Pedro Henríquez Ureña en la República Dominicana. En aquel
entonces, eso era algo más sencillo de hacer. Como muchos
saben el costo de una educación secundaria en los Estados
Unidos es muy cara y el costo de la escuela de medicina es
igual. Mis padres vinieron aquí siendo muy pobres y el poder
yo estudiar fuera me salía mucho más barato aunque del
mismo largo la carrera. El impedimento era, que al regresar,
tenía que pasar un examen de inglés, ya sabía inglés porque
me había criado en este país. Tenía que pasar el examen
que se daba a los estudiantes que se graduaron en escuelas
fuera de este país. Después, hice mi especialidad en médico
de familia aquí en el hospital Shands.
With your mother being a teacher and your father an engineer,
what was your motivation to become a doctor?
My parents always told us that it is very important to study.
They always emphasized the importance of studying when we
got to this country. They did not force us to choose a career but
encouraged us to study, to go to college, and to get a career in
something we liked. Ever since I was young I always liked
biology, and I liked medicine.
What university did you study at?
In order to study medicine first you have to go to the University
and I went to the University of Miami. Later, as many Cubans
did, I went to study at a university called Universidad Nacional
Pedro Henríquez Ureña in the Dominican Republican. Back
then, that was something easy to do. As many know, the cost
of secondary education in the United States is very expensive,
and the cost of medical school just as expensive, and when
my parents came here they were very poor. Going to school
abroad was cheaper, even though it was the same amount
of years to study the career. When I returned I had to pass
an English test, I knew English because I grew up in this
country. Then, I had to pass the exam that is given to students
who graduated from schools outside of this country. Later,
I specialized in family practice here, at Shands Hospital.
