MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the 2016 portion of the 2015-2016 season. Perhaps
you have made a decision to add more music to your life in the
coming year. This is always a good thing to do.There are many
ways to experience the WSO that may add some interesting
elements to your WSO adventures. The concerts in this part of the
year include the lively and engaging La Bottine Souriante to start
the year, an Evening of Masters including Mozart, Brahms and
Schumann, Kids Concerts, and, of course, the 25th anniversary
edition of the Winnipeg New Music Festival. (It is amazing how
quickly those years pass.)
If you do not currently come to the Centennial Concert Hall much before the concert start time,
I’d like to encourage you arrive by 7:15 pm so that you can take in the pre-concert chat or the
pre-concert performers. This is an opportunity to hear from the conductor and the guest artists,
and learn interesting details about the concert you are about to hear.
I can also recommend the Dinner & Symphony series. Five concerts in the year were selected for
this program. For example, there will be a Dinner & Symphony program attached to the February
13th Barbara Streisand Songbook concert. For these events, you come to the Piano Nobile for 5:30
pm and you are seated at a table with other WSO patrons. A dinner designed to complement the
musical program will be presented by chef David Bergmann of Bergmann’s on Lombard. The food
is good, the chance to meet and chat with other music lovers is always a pleasure, and the
participants are well positioned to enjoy the pre-concert activities. If you have never tried one of
these experiences, book early for the February 13th concert. It will be the smart Valentine that
organizes a wonderful outing like this in advance of Valentine’s day.
Best wishes for 2016 from all of us at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

CONDUCTORS
Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director
German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid,
richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly),“fearless” approach and “first-rate
technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary
command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion,
profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in
Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011).
Following on from his tenure as assistant conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which
he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was associate conductor of the Los Angeles
Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his tenth season
as music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed
the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming
initiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to
perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative
and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the only Canadian
ensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival and
Indigenous Festival, Alexander led the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to the
National Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting masterclasses, the New
Music Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of the
Centennial Concert Hall.

Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor
Julian Pellicano’s voracious musical appetite makes him a formidable interpreter
of the symphonic repertoire. He is currently resident conductor of the Winnipeg
Symphony Orchestra, Artist-in-Residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music festival,
and music director of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. Pellicano
has built his career by following an unconventional path. The creation, with Dr.
Paul Lehrman, of a new performance edition of George Antheil's Ballet Mecanique
first brought Pellicano to the public’s attention. From 2009 to 2013 he served as
music director of the Longy School of Music Conservatory Orchestra where he established a rigorous
and distinctive new orchestral program. Pellicano has conducted the Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto
Alegre (Brazil), Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony,
The Kallisti Ensemble, Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble and Milwaukee's Present Music. He has
worked in masterclasses with Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Zsolt Nagy, Martyn Brabbins, and Carl St. Clair.
As a young musician he played drums, percussion, organ, and accordion in rock, blues and jazz
groups. An autodidact, he was accepted to the Peabody Conservatory as a percussionist without any
formal training. He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music
(Stockholm), and the Yale School of Music where he was awarded the 2008 Presser Music Award and
the Philip F. Nelson Award. He premiered Martin Bresnick’s critically acclaimed opera My Friend's Story
at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas and conducted at Carnegie Hall with the Yale
Philharmonia Orchestra.

La Bottine Souriante
La Bottine Souriante is a legend of North American
roots music that first appeared on the Québec folk
scene in 1976 and is currently hailed throughout the
world for its excellence and exuberance. Many of
French Canada’s celebrated masters are alumni of
this legendary group, and many of the “young lions”
who succeeded them are now leading the current
crop of superb Québecois traditional bands.
The eleven-piece outfit - which includes a percussive

guitars - works as an exceptionally tight,
cohesive unit that sweeps its audience away
with high spirits and pulsating rhythms. They
are recognized for their innovative
arrangements and the wild spirit of their live
shows. La Bottine Souriante – the name
translates as the smiling work-boot – keeps to
a repertoire of traditional songs and tunes
from home, but is never content to stay still
musically, infusing their French-Canadian
tradition with elements of jazz, folk, and world
music from salsa to Klezmer. Most importantly,
it works.
They are currently fronted by master
singer/accordionist/step dancer/bones player
Benoit Bourque, a favourite Québecois front
man since his start in the 1970s traditional
band Heritage.

PROGRAM NOTES
by James Manishen
Variations on a
Theme of Haydn
The Haydn Variations has a theme, eight
variations and a finale. The theme is
irregularly shaped, with a five-bar phrase and
repeated sections.The variations have moods
which range across a broad emotional
spectrum. The finale is a passacaglia – an old
variation- form in itself using a repeated
figure in the bass supporting the theme. As
always with Brahms, the architecture is
masterly yet never pedantic, the noble
grandeur of the story ever present.

reared up in 1844
following a concert
tour of Russia with his
wife Clara. Her renown
as a pianist grated on his self-esteem
as a composer of stature. When the
couple returned to Leipzig, Robert
suffered a complete breakdown.
Under doctor’s orders, Robert and
Clara moved to the quieter environs
of Dresden in October of 1844 and it
was there that Robert was able to
sketch the complete Second
Symphony the following December,
beginning the orchestration in
February of 1846 and completing the
score in October. Many fits and starts
intervened during the period, with
Robert in regular states of physical
and mental distress.
Despite all the anguish, the Second
Symphony turned out to be a genuine
triumph with a dark-to-light journey of
victory mirroring the Fifth and Ninth
Symphonies of Beethoven, whom
Schumann idolized. Schumann
claimed he felt better when the
Second was completed, and one could
speculate that the piece was also a
journal of his recovery during its
construction.
Schumann’s Second is the most
traditional in form of his four
symphonies, with four movements
allied to classical style.The opening
movement is in sonata-allegro form
with a broad introduction in the brass
that recurs several times and clear,
distinguished thematic development
throughout.The scherzo has two trios
with contrasting rhythms.The noble
Adagio is among Schumann’s most
inspired, while the vigorous finale
leads to a heroic hymn of victory at
its close.

Saibei Dance
An-lun Huang
b. Guangzhou, China / 1949
Composed: 1975
First WSO performance
An-lun Huang studied
piano at Beijing’s Central
Conservatory of Music. In
the 1960s, the Chinese
Cultural Revolution ended
his formal music studies
but he persevered and in 1976, was named
resident composer and assistant
conductor of the Central Opera House of
China in Beijing. Since 1986, An-lun Huang
has made his home in Ontario and has
served as President of the Canadian
Chinese Music Society of Ontario. In 2004
he received a New Pioneer Award,
celebrating immigrant contributions to life
in the Greater Toronto Area.
Saibei is the region north of the Great Wall
of China with a unique style of folk music
employing wide melodic leaps. An-lun
Huang’s two Saibei Suites were composed
in the early seventies. Since their premieres
by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, they
have become one of the most popular
works in Chinese symphonic repertoire.
Using all original material, Saibei Dance is
composed in a typical wind-percussion
musical style of Northwest China.
