Volume 10 Number 1 Spring 2015 www.providence.org/marianwood Blessings Celebrating the Community that is Marianwood Gardens Garner Healing and Peace New Furniture Provides Comfortable Surroundings Providence Marianwood is incredibly fortunate to be placed right in the middle of beautiful, dense forest vegetation. Out every window evergreens can be seen; new blooms are just beginning to sprout; birds are chirping; and nature is constantly putting on a show for patients and residents. Isaiah 61:11 “For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise To spring up before all the nations.” In this issue Board News..............................2 Volunteer Spotlight...................2 Meet a Resident........................3 Donor Listings....................... 4-9 Providence Marianwood served nearly 900 patients and residents in 2014! This large number of admissions brings with it many loved ones and friends visiting as well. At Marianwood, we strive to improve the experience of clients and their families, and that includes refreshing the exterior spaces of the building. Because the existing furnishings are broken, rusted and worn, the Providence Marianwood Foundation sought funding through grants and private donations throughout the year to replace old items. To date, approximately 78 percent of the funds needed to upgrade the furnishings for all outdoor spaces has been raised. “We are thrilled we have our interior courtyard garden, as well as small pocket gardens for everyone to enjoy, and even more enthusiastic that they are safe,” notes Administrator Bob Eskew. “Each is accessible from inside the building and do not have exterior access. The gardens provide a peaceful, healing and safe setting for our elder residents.” For those at Marianwood, most of whom are in their late 80s, 90s and some even into their 100s, the smells of the great outdoors offer a sense of renewal and calm. Touching plants, bushes and trees helps with the wholeperson harmony. It offers a quiet that is truly meaningful to each person that is able to encounter a warm, still afternoon in the sun. Additionally, the therapy department can use this space for physical, occupational and recreational therapy programs. During the summer, families are often found enjoying the lustrous location as well. The Providence Marianwood Foundation is seeking additional funds to complete the outdoor furnishings project. The Puyallup Tribe of Indians and the Snoqualmie Tribe, along with other individual private donors, have already raised $10,764 toward the purchase of new garden furniture. Total cost for all tables, arm chairs, umbrellas and benches is approximately $13,764. He uses his gifts and talents to help those less fortunate – both near and far. One such mission entitled, “Hebron Community Projects,” involves travels to South Africa. As a result, he has helped establish a nonprofit 501(c)(3) to supplement the work that was already being done through his local church. The goal of this organization is to provide a place of refuge and create opportunities for lives to be transformed in the community of Citrusdal, South Africa. Professionally, Alan is an advisor to boards, CEOs and board committees for a wide range of organizations. His consulting focus is on executive benefits, with particular emphasis on executive retirement benefits. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA. Alan graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. He and his wife have two adult children and one dog. In his free time he likes to run, read, golf and work on retirement planning. Alan Dick After a second 3-year term of service, Susan Evans has retired from the board. As a true champion for Providence Marianwood, Susan was a key member on the Annual Wine Tasting Event Committee and offered a rich historical perspective for the board on the foundation’s history. Susan will continue to volunteer, bringing the Eucharist to the residents at Providence Marianwood. She will be missed on the board, but is greatly appreciated as a regular volunteer for our residents. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Three Generations — Gifting Their Time Grandmother, daughter and granddaughters offer companionship The true adoration and love is palpable in resident Connie’s room when her beloved Sue, Rachel, Edy (age 7) and Adele (age 5) are present. Sue started volunteering nearly two years ago, and quickly enlisted her daughter Rachel to join in on the effort. Connie was never married, and never had children of her own. Clearly these ladies quickly became her extended family. Connie is incredibly clever and funny as well, so it is no surprise why this family accelerated their visiting to three times a week. “I like that I get to see my friends here,” says Adele, “Mostly I like seeing Connie.” Marianwood resident Connie enjoys her visit from volunteers spanning three generations. 2 | Blessings Do you have time to offer and friendship to share? Local Paper Man “Mr. Press” Calls Marianwood Home Providence Marianwood has a handful of local celebrities residing with us, making the shared stories a fascinating journey down memory lane. After more than 40 years as a newspaper reporter, editorial writer and editor, Chuck Dunsire calls Providence Marianwood his home. He published a book about his life, and newspaper career in 2000 entitled, “Mr. Press.” Chuck is a third-generation Seattle native and an awardwinning reporter and editorial page editor for the former Seattle Post-Intelligencer. After his retirement in 1996 he also dabbled in writing poetry. “I wanted to write since I was knowledgeable, even in grade school I was pretty good at it,” he recalls. Interestingly, Chuck married a former Sister of Providence, and she visits him at Marianwood multiple times a week. He arrived three years ago this summer. He has found some good friendships along the way. “It is a better place than most,” he says fondly. Then and now, Chuck feels blessed for his journey through life. In his autobiography Chuck said of his journey through the publishing world, “A good measure of whatever success I have achieved was due to the friendship, encouragement and support of those with whom I worked over the years and to the love of those closest to me.
