Every day the physicians, employees, and volunteers of Lowell General
Hospital exemplify a culture of service excellence. Our innovative service
culture holds every employee accountable to achieve excellence in
10 standards of performance, including appreciation, attitude, and
communication. Employees personally escort patients and visitors to their
destination. Senior managers regularly visit with patients to get feedback
and ensure their needs are being met. The staff anticipates, recognizes,
and immediately addresses patient concerns to minimize inconvenience.
Lowell General is one of the few hospitals to employ a full-time service
culture manager focused solely on working with employees to improve
the patient and visitor experience. Together, they send a clear message:

IMRT: The latest advancement in radiation
treatment for cancer
When Don MacEachern was diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2006, he was
worried that the potentially devastating side effects of radiation treatment would greatly
reduce his quality of life after treatment. Mr. MacEachern was thrilled to learn that

Non-emergency angioplasty:
Preventing heart attacks
In January 2004, Lowell General Hospital was the first Lowell hospital
approved to provide primary (emergency) angioplasty, a life-saving
procedure for those suffering coronary heart failure. In 2006, we became
the first community hospital in Massachusetts to successfully perform
non-emergency angioplasty, which can help stop a heart attack before it
happens and prevent cardiac damage. Lowell General Hospital is one of the
few community hospitals in Massachusetts under the MASS COMM clinical
trial to provide both levels of angioplasty with the clinical team and
catheterization laboratories to support such a complex range of treatment.

FUELING INNOVATION
George Duncan— Giving from the heart and to the heart
Whether serving as Chairman of the Board at Enterprise Bank or as a longtime Trustee at Lowell General Hospital, one
of George Duncan’s priorities has always been the health, well being and the beauty of the community in which he lives.
In tribute to George Duncan’s commitment and vision, the Lowell General Hospital’s 2006 LGH Challenge Golf Tournament
was played in his honor, with proceeds benefiting cardiology services at Lowell General Hospital. Under the leadership
of LGH Challenge Chair Bill Quinn and Tribute Chairs Nancy Donahue and Arnold Lerner, more than $460,000 was raised
by his friends, family, colleagues, and supporters to fund a new state-of-the-art Heart Center at Lowell General. The
center, which is currently under construction, will include multiple interventional labs and procedure and consultation
rooms with the latest technology.
“As a member of our Board of Trustees, George has shared his gifts of time, wisdom, energy and financial support to help us
serve our healthcare mission,” said John H. Pearson, Jr., Chairman of the Board at Lowell General Hospital. “His contributions
and leadership have had an incredible impact on the growth and success of LGH, and the health of our community.”

Lowell General Auxiliary
For many people in our community, philanthropy is defined by the Lowell
General Hospital Auxiliary. Auxiliary members work tirelessly year round
to generate goodwill and fundraising to benefit LGH. From hosting events
such as the Taste of the Town to overseeing the LGH Gift Shop, their
efforts truly pay off for LGH patients as the hospital’s most generous donor.
The Auxiliary raised more than $125,000 in 2006 to fund renovations in
the hospital’s Intermediate Care Unit. Lowell General Hospital could not
provide the level of innovative, quality care without their generous support.
LGH Ball for Community Health Initiatives
When Lowell General Hospital hosts a ball, it is not only the social
event of the season; it is also a benefit to help make quality healthcare
accessible to all. Under the leadership of Co-Chairs Kevin Tomany, M.D.,
and Karen Fortune, M.D., the LGH Ball for Community Health Initiatives
drew nearly 500 people onto the floor of the dazzling Lowell Memorial
Christine Scaplen, former Second Vice-President, Deborah Trull, Past President, and
Lynn LeMaire, President, present the LGH Auxiliary’s 2006 check to LGH President
Normand Deschene.
Auditorium, raising more than $50,000 to benefit community health
initiatives and educational programs across Greater Lowell.
TeamWalk for CancerCare
Through the generosity of our community, TeamWalk for CancerCare
has enabled The Cancer Center at Lowell General Hospital to provide the
special services that truly make a difference in the lives of cancer patients.
Under the leadership of TeamWalk Chair Bruce Robinson and Honorary
Chair LPGA Hall of Fame golfer Pat Bradley, nearly 4,000 walkers, corporate
sponsors, and volunteers set a new fundraising record of $460,000.
Robinson told the cheering crowd before the start of the walk: “For the
lives of thousands of cancer patients, these may be the most important
steps you’ll take all year.”
