PORT EXPLORER
GENERAL INFORMATION
Palermo is located on the northwestern coast of Sicily on a wide bay beneath the shadow of Mount
Pellegrino. Palermo is considered a jewel in the crown of Sicily. The
busy port city is the regional capital and the largest city on the island.
Palermo’s history is marked by the multitude of conquerors and subsequent cultures that have made their home on the island. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Romans, French
Angevins, Spanish Aragonese, and even the Mafia are among those
who have contributed to Palermo’s collective cultural history. The resulting cultural blend emanates from Palermo’s buildings, art, and
people. From the Cappella Palatina with its stunning biblical mosaics
and Arab-style stalactites and alveoli ceiling to the Quattro Canti, a
city square in the heart of Palermo containing four seventeenth-century palaces, Palermo has played host to those seeking adventure
for centuries.
In the 9th century, Palermo was famed for the wealth of its court and
its universities. Today, it is an internationally famed city with modern
day treasures and priceless ancient monuments of architecture and
art.
Sicily was once a part of greater Greece and an important cultural
center until becoming a part of the Roman Empire. The Romans used
the fertile plains as a bread-basket for the large armies of the Empire
but with the fall of Rome, Sicily became an open territory and was in
turn occupied by Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Germans, French and
Spanish. Finally, in 1861, Sicily became a part of the newly unified
Italy with the help of Garibaldi.

PALERMO
The Steri Palace (Palazzo Steri) was built beginning in 1307. The style of architecture is Norman
Gothic. The palace was eventually made the official residence of the Viceroys of the Spanish Court.
The most notorious use of the palace spanned the 17th and 18th centuries when the Palazzo Steri
served as the headquarters of the dreaded Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Spanish Inquisition in
Sicily. The desperate drawings and writings of the condemned can still be seen on the walls of the
palace prison.

The Cathedral dates to 1131. This was 40
years after the successful Norman invasion
drove the Muslims from the island. According
to tradition the church was established following Sicily’s grateful King Roger II being saved
from a shipwreck and washing up on the beach
of Cefalù.
The Cloister in Cefalù is one of the largest
in Sicily. It was built in the 1100s, along with the
cathedral. The style is referred to as NormanByzantine. Though it was heavily damaged in
WWII, it has undergone extensive restoration.
