Public square on Sherbrooke Street was reconstructed last fall
● [email protected]
Several months after it reopened to the
public on December 5, Prince Albert Square
is undergoing repair this week due to several
reported cracks to the concrete.
Contruction Irabec Inc. was awarded a
$396,740-contract in the fall 2014 to refurbish
the public square, as well as reconstruct Prince
Albert Avenue, from Sherbrooke Street to
Somerville Avenue.
As there’s a five-year warranty on the work,
Construction Irabec will assume full cost of
the repair, according to assistant public works
director Elisa Gaetano.
“It’s important for us that it’s fixed and fixed
properly,” she said.
Gaetano couldn’t offer a reason as to
why several hairline cracks appeared
during winter.
“Concrete is a very resistant material so it’s
quite unusual,” added Patrick Martin, a
Westmount city councillor who happens to be
a long-time mechanical and civil engineer.
“Was it improperly compacted underneath?” he questioned.

Avenue, from Lexington to Upper Bellevue
avenues, is lined with several cracks after it was
reconstructed last summer for a little over
$125,000.
Tarek Zayed, a civil and environmental
engineering professor at Concordia
University, called the finishing “old”
after viewing several current photos of
Sunnyside Avenue.
Zayed, who has more than 25 years of
experience in the construction industry, said
the various cracks found on the street could
be attributed to the improper compaction of
the base or sub-base of the street.
Patrick Raggo, Westmount’s public works
director, said the city is in contact with the
contractor, Sintra, to have the company
fix the problem as soon as possible. He
added the work is covered by a three-year
warranty.
The reconstruction work was part of a
larger $4,441,400 roadway reconstruction
program in 2014 for several streets
in Westmount.
As for Prince Albert Square, the repair
work will be completed before June 12 –
the start of the 35th edition of the
Victoria Village Street Festival. The public
square is among the sites for the festival in
Victoria Village.

Brian Mulroney’s house sold at last
The house, located on Forden Crescent

price of $7.9 million. In 1993, Mulroney

home includes an outdoor in ground pool,

The realtor described the house as being
“located on a tranquil crescent, discreetly
tucked away into an intimate oasis, a property that will continue to take your breath
away once inside. An elegant layout and spacious rooms sets it in a class of its own.”
The sale of the mansion occurs in
an encouraging period for the real
estate market.
In total, 4,680 residential sales were
concluded in April 2015, a 12 per cent increase compared to April 2014, according to
the Greater Montreal Real Estate Board
(GMREB) statistics. This was the most active
month of April since 2012 and the largest Brian Mulroney’s former mansion has been sold for $5.8 million. Formal living room offers two

Organizing body turns to Monkland Festival organizers for help

The 35th edition of the Victoria Village Street
Festival will have a new look this June – thanks in
large part to the organizers of the popular
Monkland Street Festival.
“It’s going to be bigger and better,” said Katie
Pothier, the coordinator tasked by the Victoria
Village Merchants’ Association (VVMA) to organize the event, which takes place June 12-14 on
Victoria Avenue, Sherbrooke Street, and
Somerville Avenue. Just behind the Prince Albert
Square off of Sherbrooke Street, live entertainment, such as music, break dancers, and a wandering zoo, will be provided by Monkland Village
Production (MVP), the company that attracted
over 250,000 people to the last two editions of the
Monkland Street Festival.
“I’d call it a 2.0 version of the festival,” said Phil
Leithead, the vice-president of the production company, which was founded in 2013. “We know what
works in Monkland and we’ll make sure it crosses
over to Victoria Village.”
The production company’ ties to Monkland
extend past 2013 as MVP’s president Danny
Roseman is also the president of the Monkland
Village Merchants’ Association. He oversaw the
festival when it was merely a block party in 2004.
Leithead said he expects this year’s Victoria
Village Festival will gain the attention it deserves.
“We know what works and what doesn’t.
Tennis star Eugenie Bouchard has
been named the most marketable
athlete in the world by the British
magazine SportsPro, above Neymar,
Lewis Hamilton and Usain Bolt.

The Westmount athlete is the first woman
ever to take the top spot.
“Courted for many months by multiple
management agencies, Bouchard completed
her long-speculated move from Lagardere
Unlimited to WME│IMG in December, teaming up with an industry powerhouse that has
helped turn Serena Williams and Maria
Sharapova into the two highest earners in
women’s sport,” SportsPro wrote.
“She had also been signed to IMG Models,
a division of the company with designs on
expanding her presence in the fashion industry.”
The magazine recognized Bouchard’s
recent struggles. However, the athletes are ranked according to their marketing potential over
a three-year period from this summer, and do
not take in consideration their current success
exclusively. Selection criteria included monetary value, age, country of origin, charisma,
willingness to be marketed and crossover
appeal.
Bouchard’s ranking is mostly based on her
success in 2014, when she won her first WTA
tournament, reached two semi-finals and a final
in Grand Slam events and climbed to a careerhigh No. 5 rank in October.

recommencer à zéro l’automne prochain», a
souligné celle qui souhaite étudier en soins
infirmiers.
«Même si j’ai passé 4 mois à l’hôpital
l’an dernier, j’ai réussi à terminer mon

Herzliah High School student plans
to eradicate ebola

doing a lot of research, I was able to find the link
between the virus and the protein, and I came up
with the idea to find the receptor which could
Herzliah Secondary 4 student, block the protein temporarily,” said Hotter.
Raphael Hotter, has made a discovery
that could completely change the
treatment of the ebola virus. Raphael’s
project “Ebola No More” explores
a protein that is present when ebola
is contracted.
“I did research and I found that the ebola virus
needed a certain protein to replicate, so the whole
purpose of my project was to discover the molecules that have the highest probability to inhibit
this protein and to block its function, so the ebola
virus can’t replicate,” he said.
Through computer simulation, he analyzed
the characteristics of molecules and discovered a
way to isolate the protein so that there is the highest
probability of curing the disease. Back in
September, Hotter was shocked by images reported by the media. The ebola outbreak was at its
peak, as was the fear that the virus would spread.
“So many innocent children, mothers and
families were suffering from the virus. So, after

With his discovery, the 15-year-old student
placed first and won the gold medal at the provincial Hydro Quebec Science Fair. He has also
gone on to earn the bronze award of excellence,
in the intermediate category, at the CanadaWide Science Fair held in Fredericton New
Brunswick last week.
”It was an amazing experience. I met people
from all across Canada, from different backgrounds, who presented cutting edge projects.
We were 500 people and we all created a feeling
of camaraderie to the point where we would be
excited for each award recipient. I hope to remain
in contact with my new friends,” he said.
Hotter had the chance to discover hundreds
of projects ranging from life and health science
to physics, from math and engineering, and from
computer and earth sciences to
biotechnologies.
“It is inspiring to see our young students who
work so diligently being recognized in this way.
What a wonderful opportunity to share their

innovative ideas with students from all across the
nation and globally as well,” said Herzliah
Principal Linda Leiberman in a press release.
Hotter has received a coveted invitation
to present his project at the International
MILSET Science Exhibition in Belgium
in July. Despite the huge success of his
idea, Hotter enjoys the enthusiasm one day at
the time.
“Last year I got a project, and I had very
high expectations. I only made it to the
regional fair, which was a great accomplishment, but I thought I would do better. From
then on, I’ve learned to manage my expectations. When I go to Belgium, competing
against a thousand people, my expectations
have already met my goal, and whatever happens is just a bonus.”
In addition to the awards, the Herzliah
High School pupil has also received scholarships from both Concordia University and
the University of Western Ontario.
