To date, we have raised $123,247 from alumni to match Brother Hewitt’s generous offer. By digging deep to meet this challenge, we are that much closer to being able to begin work on the Chapter House. Campaign Status At-a-Glance has been revitalized through this process as well. Perhaps most important, old friendships have been renewed. We are at a critical juncture in the campaign. With our goal in sight, the commitment of every Brother is vital to our success. Participation to-date has been great and we $5 Million Goal appreciate the loyalty of each donor. The immediate benefit from a campaign such as this is the opportunity for Kappa Sigma to continue our status as a premier fraternity Fraternally, at the University of Texas one which has pledged more than 100 men in the past 15 months. This benefit comes not only from an Campaign Chairmen upgraded physical structure but also from the reconnecting that George Alcorn ’53 invariably occurs when Brothers come together on a project. Our house corporation As of October 4, 2011 125 Tau Campaign TAU TIMES 2 National Fraternity Commends Tau’s Hard Work at Conclave After Year of Reflection, Undergraduates Move Forward t is with great pleasure that I announce to you that Kappa Sigma’s Tau Chapter has been officially removed from any probations or sanctions. This is a result of almost a full year of hard work and dedicated efforts to get the Chapter back in good standing with the National Fraternity. I One year ago, due to improper use of alcohol, our Chapter was given a trusteeship period with a year-long alcohol sanction. After much reflection and discussion, we were able to rewrite and restructure how we conduct many of our Chapter programs. The current officer board amended our bylaws and rewrote our scholarship, philanthropy, alumni, ritual, pledgeship, and risk management programs so that they now comply with our national insurance policy requirements. This was a long, arduous process, but one we believe will serve us better in the future. We are satisfied in the belief that we’ve done a great job in changing the culture of our Chapter for the best. Not only did we learn a lot from other chapters around the country, we were able to share much good advice with the chapters that have been struggling with issues that Tau has dealt with over the past decade. We were commended for our contributions and were given a plaque recognizing our Chapter as the 10th best Kappa Sigma pledge class in the nation. Friday afternoon, we met with the Supreme Executive Committee. They commended our hard work and told us they believe we have the potential to be the number one chapter in the nation. To our surprise, we got a standing ovation from the entire audience! It was a truly gratifying moment for all of us. As the new school year approaches, I’ve never been so excited to be a part of an organization such as Kappa Sigma. Our new Lodge and the grounds upgrades give us one of the best facilities on campus. We are shooting for a pledge class of over 40 young gentlemen who could not be more excited to carry the torch. I fully believe that Tau is at the peak of its 127 years and it will only get better. In late July, Ernest Hotze ’08, Kevin Redmon ’10, and I attended the 68th Biennial Kappa Sigma Conclave in Las Vegas, Nevada. Unsure of how the National Chapter would receive us due to our probationary status, we took a very humble approach and listened carefully to the advice we were given in the breakout sessions. AEΚDB, Matthew J. Ziemnicki ’08 Grand Master [email protected] 2011 Tau Men of the Year he Tau Trustees and Alumni Association are proud to announce Wade A. Kilpatrick ’69 as the 2011 Man of the Year, along with Charles H. Bankhead ’57 (1937-2011), who will be honored posthumously. Both men have made outstanding contributions to Kappa Sigma’s Tau Chapter and deserve our heartfelt gratitude. Honors will be presented on November 5. T Kappa Sigma 3 A LITTLE SISTER TO ALL TAU KAPPA SIGS MAKES BIG IMPACT TO CAMPAIGN N ancy Tipton’s brother, Jim Tipton ’71, was a loyal Kappa Sig brother who passed away about 10 years ago. Several of his pledge brothers put together a naming opportunity for him in the new Chapter House to honor Jim along with three other Tau brothers who also passed on early. Nancy made a nice contribution to the campaign and rallied many of Jim’s friends who were not Kappa Sigs to donate also. Nancy wrote a compelling letter to Jim’s pledge brothers to spur their giving in his honor at the beginning of the campaign. Portions of her letter are below. Several weeks ago, I learned about the fundraising drive for the construction of a new Kappa Sigma house at UT and I’ve been thinking of how best to support the effort and get involved. As you may remember, I was not only Jimmy’s little sister, but a Little Sister of the Star and Crescent and, like Jimmy, loved the Kappa Sigs. Jimmy was a member of one of the last pledge classes to occupy the West 19th Street house and was devastated to see the oldest fraternity house west of the Mississippi River turned into a parking lot. I know that Jim would be thrilled about the new Chapter House and Lodge and recognize its importance to the future of Kappa Sigma on the University of Texas campus. I also know that he would want me to participate in any way I can in order to help the Tau Chapter reach its campaign goal. The memories Jimmy made during his student years at the University were the dearest to him of all. He was proud to be a member of one of the first three fraternities on the UT campus and prouder still to represent Kappa Sigma as a Texas Cowboy. Unfortunately, Jimmy was not the only member of the 1970 pledge class to die too young; Billy Tuck ’71, Bobby Doherty ’71, and Robbie Herring ’71 were also taken too soon. In an effort to make a significant contribution to the new house in memory of these fine Kappa Sig men, I am asking for your support in the Tau house campaign.
