Rocket Man Takes Off At Metra
By Dante Threefingers
Listening to the chattering of voices while the fans waited anxiously for
the concert to start, I sat in my seat prepared for my first-ever concert. I looked
around; and I saw seats filled with people--rows and rows of people--almost all
the way up to the top. The lights went out and then the crowd roared. Then, the
band appeared when the lights came back on. This was the start of a great night
that people won’t forget.
The music was loud; you could hear the drum beat inside your chest, the
great screeches of the guitar, and the low boom when the bass played, and the
great voice of the singer. The songs were brilliant and awesome; and every time
the songs ended, the crowd stood up and cheered and clapped with a deafening
roar. Song after song, it was a series of lyrical greatness and rhythm.
When the last song had been played, the crowd cheered for an encore.
The band appeared again with one last song that sounded sweetly though my ears.
This was a night that my classmates and I won’t ever forget.
I was fortunate enough to be one of ten students who were selected to attend the Elton John concert on Wednesday, October 7, at Rimrock Auto Arena at
Metra Park in Billings. The Billings concert was one leg of John’s “Final Curtain” tour. After fifty years in the music industry and performing over 4000 concerts during his award-winning career, John claims he’s retiring from touring.
Thanks to the TurnAround Arts, it was a fantastic opportunity for the students. Since John is a Turn Around artist, they arranged for concert tickets and
backstage passes for the students and their chaperones. It was definitely a once-in
-a-lifetime experience.

Cross Country Teams Take First Place at
Home Invitational
It was an exciting night on Wednesday, October 14. The Lame Deer cross country team hosted an Invitational on their home turf and engaged in some friendly competition with Lodge Grass, Busby, and St. Labre. Both the high school boys’ and girls’ teams
won first place in the LD Invitational. Quite an accomplishment, runners!

Students Go
Backstage at Rock
Legend’s Concert
By Calesta Redneck
Recently, ten Lame Deer students
were invited to attend the Elton John concert
in Billings as a part of the TurnAround Arts
program. In order to be selected to attend this
trip, the students had to write an essay answering two questions: Why do you want to
go? and How will you share your experience
with others?
Many students applied; but these students were selected: Dante Threefingers,
Davinia Osife, Hunter Barrus, Mickey Selage, Precious Whiteman, Javyyn Strange
Owl, Lara Strange Owl, Cassidy Runsabove, Jesse Two Two, and Calesta Redneck.
The students and their chaperones were treated to backstage passes. Backstage, the
group got to see the wonders of how a show gets started and what they do throughout
the show. They met Nigel Olsson and also got to see Davey Johnson’s variety of guitars.
Before the show, the students got snacks and drinks and were seated in the
third and fourth rows. The show opened with the song “Funeral for a Friend.” Then,
they broke out with “Benny and the Jets” and the crowd went crazy!! As the show
went on people in boas and light-up glasses were dancing and singing. You could
feel the excitement in the air!

Meet Miss Morning Star
By Eldon Starr
LDHS Junior Tamia Two Moons was crowned Miss Morning
Star at the Native American Day Celebration on September 25.
Here is what she had to say about her new responsibility:
What was your reaction to being selected Miss Morning Star? I was very honored
and felt extremely privileged to receive this title! I have always wanted to dance and
be a part of the Powwow life. This gives me the opportunity to do that. I will ALWAYS
represent with the best of my ability.
How do you feel about representing your school year-round? I feel very confident
in myself. I will represent our school with the utmost pride and respect. I will always
act responsibly and with integrity in and out of school; and I will always respect my
student body, staff, and people.
What are your duties as Miss Morning Star? As I have the title of “Miss Morning
Star,” I have to achieve the best standings I possibly can in my attendance, grades,
and behavior. I have to represent with pride and honor, always. I also have to be a
leader to my fellow students showing respect, honest, integrity, and courage.
Why do you think you were chosen to be Miss Morning Star? Personally, I think
that I was chosen to be Miss Morning Star because I have many leadership skills that I
use well. I always do my best when it comes to my education. I try my very best to be
in school every day and get to class on time, and I often help my student body when it
is needed. I do well in all four sports that I am involved in and many younger children
credit me for that. I also follow rules and make sure that other people do, too.
What does this title mean to you? Having the title of “Miss Morning Star” means a
lot to me. I have attended Lame Deer Schools for nine out of my twelve years of
schooling (including kindergarten). Being able to represent this school is a blessing to
me. This school is like my home. Being involved in so many sports, I am here all the
time. I think it is so awesome that I can represent my school, my tribe, and my people
everywhere I go.
Why are you a good representative for us? I am a good representative because I am a
good student and am very mature. I have the leadership skills to be a role model and a
representative or our school. I promise to do it in the best way possible.
Is there anything else that you would like to add? Thank you, Lame Deer Schools for
giving me this opportunity. Please trust that I will fulfill my duties as Miss Morning
Star. I am excited for the opportunity.

On Friday, October 30, students and staff were treated to a live performance of William Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice.
After viewing the play, the actors held a talkback session and then ate
lunch with the students. In the afternoon, many students had the opportunity to work in smaller groups with the actors. Thank you to

The week of October 26-30 was Red Ribbon Week.
Every year, Lame Deer schools, along with many other
schools across the country, celebrate Red Ribbon Week. But,
the question is: “Why?”
Red Ribbon Week began after the 1985 kidnapping,
torture, and murder of DEA agent Enrique Camarena.
Camarena had been working undercover in Mexico for more
than four years when his work led to the discovery of a multimillion-dollar narcotics manufacturing operation in Chihuahua, Mexico. Camarena and his pilot were both kidnapped.
Soon after, representatives from the Mexican Federal
Judicial Police presented a tip to the DEA saying the Camarena had been kidnapped by a man and his three sons. The
Mexican police organized a raid of the man’s ranch the next
morning. During the raid, officers shot and killed five individuals. Not long after, a passerby discovered the bodies of
both Camarena and his pilot Zavala Avelar by the side of the
road not far from the ranch. The DEA’s investigation revealed that Camarena had been tortured before he was murdered. When news of what happened to Camarena reached
the United States, it made many Americans aware of the dangers of the international drug trafficking trade.
Agent Camarena’s hometown, Calexico, California,
honored him by organizing a community-wide response in
which citizens wore red ribbons in his remembrance. The
next year, the California State PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) adopted the Red Ribbon Campaign in honor of Agent
Camarena and to promote a substance-free lifestyle in order
to reduce the demand for illegal drugs in the United States.
In 1988, Red Ribbon Week was nationally recognized by President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy
Reagan. Over the years, the movement grew. Today, the
Red Ribbon Campaign is celebrated by millions of people in
school districts all across the nation. Its purpose is to bring
people together and to raise awareness for substance abuse
prevention, intervention, and treatment.

Construction Class Breaks Ground on
Veterans Park Pavilion
By Michael Crispin and Nathan Friesz
Construction Class (left to right): Joseph Brown, Khristian Gray, Merlin Limpy, Kash
Spang, Xavier Badbrave, Dusty Wilson, Mr. Friesz, and Michael Crispin.
Not Pictured: Nasheena Whitedirt, Trey Wolfblack, Damon King, Wilbur Spang, Jalen
Gondara, Antonio Garcia, and Jeff Whiteshield.
Mr. Friesz’s 6th/7th Period Construction Class recently began a project in
downtown Lame Deer. The project is to build a small pavilion in Veterans Park
next to the Depot. The class is excited about this project because, not only are we
giving back to the community, we get to build a permanent structure which includes
a bigger process, such as excavating dirt and pouring concrete.
Lonnie Little Bird was nice enough to come down for the first concrete
mixing and give some pointers on the job. Lonnie also helped us gather materials
for this project. The pavilion will be made from approximately 90% re-purposed or
re-used materials that were left over from past building projects.
In the past, the Construction Class has built several moveable structures
such as sheds and outhouses that can be seen around the community in various people’s back yards. However, the Veterans Park Pavilion is the first permanent project the class has worked on. Instead of being built for an individual, this project is
for the enjoyment of the entire community. We hope that this is the first of many
such projects to come.

Pumpkins are grown all over the word in every
continent except Antarctica.
Pumpkins are 90% water.
The word “pumpkin” first appeared in the fairy tale
“Cinderella.”
Original Jack o’ lanterns weren’t pumpkins. They
were turnips and potatoes.
The original purpose of a Jack o’ lantern was to
scare away evil spirits.
Over 1.5 billion pumpkins are produced in the
United States each year.
Each full-sized pumpkin contains approximately
500 seeds.
It takes 90-120 days to grow a full-sized pumpkin.
A pumpkin seed sprouts in 8-10 days.
There are over 45 varieties of pumpkins.
Pumpkins can be white, green, red, or yellow.
Pumpkins are fruits, not vegetables.
Pumpkin pie was originally a hollowed out pumpkin shell filled with milk, honey, and spices and
then baked.
Pumpkins have been used for a variety of medical
reasons such as a snakebite remedy, a freckleremover, an indigestion relief, and to prevent prostate cancer.
Edible yellow flowers grow on pumpkin vines.
The pumpkin is a member of the squash family.
The “pumpkin capital of the world” is Morton, Illinois – this is where the Libby Company is based.
Pumpkins are a good source of potassium and Vitamin A.
80% of American pumpkins are harvested in October and November.
Smaller pumpkins taste better than larger ones.
There are over 50 varieties of pumpkins. The

Monsters, Myths, & Mysteries
By Dante Threefingers
The world is full of strange things; but, the thing that
takes the cake in strangeness would be eyewitness accounts of weird animals and phenomena that will surely
spook anybody. The stories that you will be reading will
make you question your sight, hearing, and thinking.
All over the world there are stories of weird creatures.
Here are just a few of these shocking stories:
Chupacabra is an alien-looking dog creature that has
been sighted around Puerto Rico. Witnesses report that
the animal has a kangaroo-like hop. The word “chupacabra” is derived from the
Spanish word for “goat sucker”. The creature got its name from its tendency to
creep into farms at night to hunt livestock by literally draining all the blood out of
the poor animals until they died. This phenomenon creates panic across communities as these coincide with the lore about vampires and reports of animals attacking
humans. Most people ask what kind of strange animal is this? Is it really a new
animal or is it some kind of starved mutated coyote, like some have suggested?
Beast of Gevaudan is a wolf-like beast that, for years, has been surrounded with
mystery and folktale. Sightings of the beast were first recorded in the 1760s in
France with 60 cases of animal-attack deaths (actually, there have been reports that
the death toll is over 100). The beast is described to be a werewolf the size of a
horse or, perhaps, a cross between a wolf and hyena. The monster has a weird
color pattern like red, white, and black —those are the main colors told in eyewitness testimony. The monster was considered to be bulletproof until it was finally
killed by a silver bullet.
Ogopogo is a monster that lives In Lake Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada.
The monster is said to have a snake-like body that is 40 feet in length with a darkbrown pigment. It has a whale-like tail and a horse-shaped head with a mane.
Dover Demon was first seen in Dover, Massachusetts in 1977 by three different
people who gave similar descriptions: glowing orange eyes, large melon-shaped
head, rough and hairless skin, and long peach-colored limbs.
Mothman is a creature that was originally reported in West Virginia in 1966. Witnesses described it as a “winged humanoid.” After making contact with the Mothman, people reported having visions and prophecies from extra-terrestrials. The
Mothman is described as seven feet tall with ten-foot wide wings, glowing red
eyes, gray scaly skin, and a terrifying squeal. Reports say that he can take off at a
speed of up to 100 mph.
Yeti is a hairy ape-like creature who is reported to be about eight feet tall. He is
covered with white, brown, or auburn fur and emits a strong, repulsive odor. Witnesses report seeing Yeti in mountain areas and isolated woods all over the world.
Bigfoot (Sasquatch) and the Abominable Snowman are examples of the Yeti.
Jersey Devil is a terrifying monster seen in New Jersey as far back as the 1700’s.
There have been over 200 reported sightings since then. This creature is described
as having a long neck, horse-like face, two-foot long wings, skinny back legs,
hooves like a horse, and paws on its front feet. Seeing the Jersey Devil walking on
its back legs with its wings spread must be a terrifying sight!
Loch Ness Monster, also known as Nessie, lives deep in the water. Most eyewitness accounts report simply seeing unusual humps appearing above the water’s
surface. Occasional reports of the entire creature describe her as having a very
long neck, a large humped back, and a head like a horse.

Autumn’s Colors
By Lara Littlebird
Autumn’s colors
So Vibrant and Bright.
The cold, bitter wind whistles
Bringing a dark, bold night.
In the morning it’s cold
And the deer roam around.
This is a great hunting season
So remember to keep it down.
It’s peaceful in the country
And yellow leaves fill the creek.
The dew is still on the plants,
Drooping, making them weak.

Monsters and witches
Black cats and bats
Candy and children
Pumpkins and spiders
Dead leaves from trees
Ghosts and goblins
Dark clouds up above

Fog like a blanket
For Halloween
Is upon us.
Halloween is fun
And it’s almost here.
It’s drawing near
So be prepared for a great scare.
Monsters and snakes,
Witches and mice,
Some are creepy and
Some are nice.
Costumes are ready,
Both small and tall.
Halloween is here,
A holiday for all.
Zombies
By Taleisha Spotted Elk
The birds are ready to migrate
And they leave us in awe.
With every step comes a crisp
Yes, indeed, it’s fall.
It’s dark and cold and he’s all alone
With no one around to hear the violent screams.
The dead will come and devour him and
Take him back to the darkness to stay.
He will never see another light of day.
He’s gone—just another lost soul
Wandering without a purpose—
Just lost hope, soon to be forgotten
Autumn
By Alannah Blackwolf
Autumn
Oh, the leaves as they fall
Summer has passed
And so has the time.
But where has the year gone?
Colder and colder it gets,
Clothes get a little heavier.
Mornings are colder
And the coffee is warmer.
Days are getting shorter,
Night is coming faster
Winter will soon be here
So welcome the colder season.
Fall
By Joleia Little
Nights growing longer,
Days getting shorter,
The smell of pumpkin spice getting stronger.
I wish this cold would go away.
Leaves falling to the ground,
I dislike this “Sweater Weather.”
Trick-or-treaters will soon go from door to door,
Patiently waiting for creepy movies.
So not looking forward to this cold and flu season,
Waiting for the day my Cowboys play.

That Time of Year
By Richard Washee
As the leaves fall to the ground,
so does the summer.
As the days get shorter,
the nights get longer.
As the kids dress to impress,
the adults get their treats ready.
This is a time of joy, but also a time of death.
All the beautiful things say, “Good Bye,”
as the cold says, “Hello.”
Seasons
By Preston Woodenthigh
Seasons come and go throughout the year
Summer is over and Fall is here.
Soon, Winter’s cold touch will arrive.
Then Spring will come and wash away all that is white
And bring about fresh, green life.
Then, Summer’s tan will return.
The seasons repeat and there’s nothing
Any of us can do to stop it.
All we can do is enjoy it.
Autumn...
By Kash Spang
The leaves change from color to color
And portray an emotion held in by the trees.
Cold days end with colder nights
A cold that chills the soul from a burning emotion.
Birds sing their songs and escape to the South
A song that signals the start of an amber autumn.
The best is far better than the worst
Best, best, best, day to be alive.
Yellow, red, orange—all the colors of the heart
That loves this autumn.
