to increased local business resulting
in more sales tax and lodging tax for
City Hall –– added income to support
municipal improvements for all of us.
Hundreds of visitors come here
looking to learn more about their family
roots, and one of their first stops is the
VIC. Robin and her volunteers often
direct them to historic cemeteries or the
Nevada County Historical Society. And
it should come as no surprise that one of
the most frequent questions visitors ask

As we noted earlier, the VIC has, in
many ways, become Grass Valley’s
Living Room – a casual, friendly place
mirroring the warmth and hospitality
of our area – while also serving as an
important community resource. Its
organizational success can be traced to
Robin’s management and her dedicated
volunteers, including Michael Lewis,
former Human Resources Director for the
City of Grass Valley.

MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to serve our members
by facilitating business development,
promoting tourism and visitor direction
and presenting information that supports
responsible business growth in our
community.
Our 105-year-old Chamber of Commerce
is a Non-profit 501(C) 6 Membership
Association, located in downtown Grass
Valley. The Chamber operates the Grass
Valley Visitors Center; open 7 day a week,
360 days each year. As a non-profit, the
Chamber has a Board of Directors who
are elected from the body of the Chamber
membership and serve a 3 year term.
The organization is led by Co-CEOs Keith
and Robin Davies, their support staff and
volunteers. Through Committees chaired
by members of the Board of Directors, the

Chamber endeavors to expand its involvement with
all civic entities, other chambers, member non-profits
and media organizations to establish new, or enrich
existing relationships that through collaboration
will benefit the community.
The Business Development
Committee is tasked with identifying,
coordinating and offering value
based programs to chamber members and to the
community at-large, conducting New Member
orientations and providing mentoring programs for
new and existing businesses.
While the Chamber is non-partisan and nonpolitical, the Government Committee meets
monthly with the representatives from the offices
of Assemblyman Brian Dahle, Senator Ted Gaines
and Congressman Doug LaMalfa. The Committee
endeavors to stay informed about the important
issues that affect all aspects of business and the
positions taken on those issues by the
officials elected by our community. Updates
legislative Information is available on the Chamber
website www.grassvalleychamber.com and the
weekly News and Notes e-newsletter. The Annual
Membership meeting is organized and hosted by
the Government Committee.
Local business leaders from the
Chamber Membership comprise the
Ambassador Committee. They volunteer
their time and talents to promote the Chamber and
while doing so, their own business or organization.
Ambassadors play a pivotal role in organizing
networking events and providing the resources
and support to keep the Chamber a dynamic and
viable organization. The contributions of each
Ambassador is a valued community service.

The Nevada County Economic
Resources Council (ERC) launched its
American Digital Media Leadership
Campus Task Force last fall. The idea for
the American Digital Media Leadership
Campus emerged at a lunch meeting of
high tech CEOs hosted in June for the ERC
by the CEO of Telestream, Dan Castles.
THE VISION: Located in the beautiful
Sierra Foothills region of Nevada County,
California, the American Digital Media
Leadership Campus serves as a hub
for emerging and existing companies
focused on video technologies, including
broadcast, satellite, IP over-the-top, video
collaboration, surveillance, security,
military and space programs, stabilization
systems and new video markets such as
Internet-of-Things (IoT).
The American Digital Media Leadership
Campus possesses world-class videocentric programs, video collaboration labs,
training labs, and technology-rich office
space. Its goal is to maintain and enhance
the U.S.A.’s competitiveness in the rapidly
growing global digital media technology
sector, while strengthening the campus’
resident and non-resident member
companies located in Nevada County,
who are already world-class competitors
in this sector.
While we are early in what will

billion online content videos in December
2013. The average American spent more
than 19 hours watching online video.
Over 72.1 million US smartphone users
watched video on their devices at least
monthly in 2013. This is expected to rise

Internet video traffic will be 79% of all
global consumer Internet traffic in 2018.

Register of Historic Places. In addition,
eight individual buildings are listed on
the register and the town also contains 18
state and local landmarks.
As the county seat, Nevada City served
for many years as the commercial,
governmental and professional center

the century, however, it has gradually
relinquished its domination of the retail

recent decades actively developed its

Nevada City developed along
the banks of Deer Creek in 1849
Early reports told of miners who pulled
a pound of paydirt a day from gold
deposits along the creek. The town was
first known as Deer Creek Dry Diggins
and later as Caldwell’s Upper Store.
Several major fires in the 1850s and early
1860s convinced the townspeople to use
more brick in rebuilding their structures.
Civic leaders named the town Nevada,
Spanish for “snow-covered,” in 1850 and
the next year the newly-incorporated
city became the Nevada County seat.
The town’s name was later changed to
Nevada City after its title was borrowed
by the state to the east.
The town has had its share of firsts
and famous people in California History.
Former U.S. President Herbert Hoover
lived and worked here as a gold miner
in his younger days. Three former U.S.
senators, George Hearst, A. A. Sargent
and William Morris Stewart, lived in
Nevada City.

that formed the Pacific Gas & Electric Co.
occurred here and PG&E’s first general
office was located in the National Hotel.
The area boasts several inventions in the
fields of mining, water and electricity.
It was in May of 1853, that Professor
Henry Durant, formerly of Yale
University, met with a committee in
Nevada City to formulate plans for an
academy that was incorporated two
years later as the College of California.
It would later become the University of
California, Berkeley.
In recent years, the Nevada City
lifestyle has attracted a number of wellknown writers, artists and musicians.
The area also draws high-tech business
entrepreneurs who are able to locate
their enterprises away from the stresses
of big city life. While many California

City has rebounded

Nevada City than meets the eye. There is, as a Los
Angeles Times reporter recently observed, “a Nevada City
state of mind. It’s a real place where people of different
lifestyles manage to coexist successfully. Refreshingly,
there is a there there.”
Nevada City is a place where business is done with
a smile and pedestrians acknowledge each other on
the street. Even the motorists are laid back. It is a local
tradition to wait at stop signs and let the other guy go first.
Like other Gold Rush towns up and down the Mother
Lode, Nevada City began in 1849. While other old towns
have disappeared or fallen victim to urban sprawl,
Nevada City, located 80 miles west of Reno, via Interstate
80 and scenic Highway 20, has managed to retain its oldfashioned charm.
Two factors occurring back in the 1960s
and 1970s helped save Nevada City
The hippies and back-to-the landers who settled here
brought new attention and commerce to a sagging Gold
Country downtown that was half full of empty stores.

At the same time, city leaders were early
in recognizing that historic preservation
could be the foundation of a strong
tourism trade.
Today, the hippies who opened head
shops, herb shops and health foods
stores are established business people,
some in more conventional occupations
such as real estate, insurance and city
government. Nevada City’s entire
downtown area has been listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Through the changes, the town has
retained an artsy, bohemian flavor that
adds to its appeal.
In addition to the 90-building
downtown historic district with its many
shops, restaurants and bed and breakfast
inns, the town is a recognized arts and
entertainment center of the Sierra
Foothills. It features several galleries and
is home to award-winning groups such as

of Commerce (PVACOC) is an
active and important part of

With over 150 business and
supporter members, the
PVACOC is continually adding
and enhancing member benefits

One such program is its monthly
“Business for Breakfast” networking
meeting. The meetings are held at
Buttermaker’s Cottage in Western
Gateway Park and start at 7:00 AM sharp,
ending at 8:00 AM. All attendees have

each other, but allows us to answer
questions and refer business to each other
when asked.” Mastrodonato added, “We
have a great community here, and our
local businesses and organizations are the
driving force behind many of the things
we accomplish as a community. Bringing
the business and civic community closer
together on a monthly basis is a fun and
exciting way to develop stronger bonds
and camaraderie. Each month I become
more and more excited about the positive
vibes, fun, and electricity of the meetings.
But more impressively, the energy in the
room at seven o’clock in the morning
amazes everyone!”
The meetings are closely timed and
structured so that attendees can plan on
being finished on time to start the day
at their business. The general public
is welcome to attend and participate
as well. Cost to attend the Business for
Breakfast meetings is $10 for Penn Valley
Chamber members and $15 for nonmembers. A business card raffle for a
complimentary entry to a future meeting
is held at the close of each meeting.
The PVACOC also participates in
many business mixers throughout the
year. Business mixers are held almost
monthly at member businesses and
provide chamber members with an
opportunity to mix and mingle with
other local businesses and members of
the community.
The PVACOC not only advocates on
behalf of business and commerce in the
area, but provides programs, events, and
sponsorships that benefit all of Western

Consumers Seek Benefits of Small Business
FAMILY FEATURES - As shoppers grab their
wallets and purses to purchase goods and
products for their families and homes,
many will opt for local businesses and
mom and pop establishments instead of
their big-box competitors.
According to results from a national
small business perception survey by Web.
com, consumer concerns about the risk
of online security and privacy may be the
motivator behind this shopping behavior.
The survey found that consumers
are less concerned about security issues
when it comes to shopping with small
business retailers than large retailers. In
fact, it found that consumers are more
than twice as concerned about online
security at large retailers (27 percent
of respondents) than at small business
retailers (12 percent of respondents).
When questioning small business
owners, the results revealed many are
using the negative impact of security
breaches as a learning experience to
boost security and privacy for customers
who access their digital services.
OTHER CONSUMER ATTITUDES
While consumers value the “local”
convenience of shopping with a small
business, many consumers also want
these small businesses to offer the
same user-friendly technology – such
as mobile apps and easy-to-use websites
– that large retailers provide.

differentiator, consumers would like
