Synopsis
Director’s Note
On January 21st 1975, in a village in the north of Portugal, a child writes to his parents who are in Angola to tell them how sad Portugal is. On
July 13th 2011, in Milan, an old man remembers his first love. On May 6th 2012, in Paris, a man tells his baby daughter that he will never be a
real father. During a wedding ceremony on September 3rd 1977 in Leipzig, the bride battles against a Wagner opera that she can’t get out of
her head.
But where and when have these four poor devils begun searching for redemption?
Redemption is a film that resulted from my recent passing through Le Fresnoy School as a tutor. I wanted it to be intimate, almost confessional, composed exclusively of archive images, many of which are super 8 and therefore convey a unipersonal, anonymous, private dimension...
And, simultaneously, I wanted it to be the very opposite of what I just stated.

Miguel Gomes, Lisbon, 1972. Studied Cinema. Film Critic between 1996 and 2000. Has directed several short films. THE FACE YOU DESERVE
(2004) is his first feature. OUR BELOVED MONTH OF AUGUST (2008), and TABU (2012) have confirmed the international projection of the director, the last one sold to over 50 countries, and winning dozens of awards.
Retrospectives from Miguel’s work have been programmed at the Viennale, the BAFICI, Torino Film Festival, in Germany and the USA.
REDEMPTION is his last short film. Miguel is already preparing the next feature ARABIAN NIGHTS.

I am sure there are still plenty of people there who are friends of ours and don’t
care for revolutions, people who one can climb trees and have picnics with.
I threw the stones and shouted: Fuori i fascisti. A week later, the owner put the
factory up for sale for next-to-nothing and left Milan for an undisclosed
destination, taking with him his wife and daughter - Alessandra, my love.
My dear baby girl, whatever you become in the future, a ballet dancer, general
attorney of the republic, equestrian Olympic champion, astronaut or detective
- how would I know - I fear that you are most likely not to have a real dad .
Unless Wagner stops playing loudly in my head he will end up making my dear
husband ask me for a divorce. If this fascist Wagner doesn’t shut up I’ll end up being
accused of betraying the socialist revolution.
