In 1997 Fundación Leer signed a license agreement with Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), a non
profit organization that has been working in promoting reading since 1966. This agreement enabled
it to run its programs adapting them to local needs.
In 2004, Fundación Leer started working together with the Open Society Institute in order to
implement the program Step by Step in Argentina. The aim of the program is to improve the
performance at school through learning strategies that include the family in the children’s learning
process and promote democratic values at school.

Projects.
697 educational projects were carried out in 681 schools, libraries
and food assistance centers, children’s development centers, hospitals,
boarding homes for children and reformatories, in 328 towns around
the country.
Children and young Adults.
223.631 children and young adults up to 17 years old took part in
Fundación Leer’s educational projects.
Distributed books.
223.645 new literature books for children and young adults were
distributed among the participating children and institutions. These
books were chosen by the communities, while 78.695 new books were
chosen by the participating children to keep in property and share with
their families.

Reading Corners in libraries.
57 Reading Corners in libraries with a total of 144.950 new books were
put together in 55 towns of 9 provinces.
Trained teachers.
2502 teachers, managers, librarians, communitarian educational
promoters, undergraduate teachers, doctors, nurses and volunteers from
different institutions received training in order to update their techniques
in the promotion of reading, reading comprehension and the development
of critical thinking.

Reading Marathon
3.513.577 children and young adults and 218.736 adults participated in
the 6th National Reading Marathon in 11.225 institutions throughout
the country.

Teacher training
in reading
promotion programs
Fundación Leer develops reading promotion programs around the country
that include teacher training, creation of reading corners and distribution
of new books for ownership chosen by the children.
In 2008, the training that teachers received in these projects was strengthened by means of new modules related to local needs.
Our goal was to update the teaching practices that make teachers literacy
promoting agents and aid the development of the children’s reading
strategies. Some of the issues approached during the trainings were oral
narrations, the reading of academic texts and the involvement of teachers
in the strengthening of reading skills. These issues were tackled both in
theory and practice, emphasizing the renewal of teaching strategies in the
classrooms.

Reading comprehension in
curricular areas
In 2008, Fundación Leer together with Dow
Argentina carried out the project Leer las
Ciencias (Reading Sciences), a program aimed
for the reading and understanding of scientific
texts. The program sought to awaken the
children’s interest in Science and to develop
the skills necessary for the approach of scientific texts. The program also offered teachers
tools and resources to improve and update
their teaching of Sciences through texts.
Thus teachers received training regarding the
methodology of scientific thinking and teaching
strategies useful for children to approach
school texts in a critical way.

The program
“Preparing For Life” expands
The program “Preparing For Life”, created by Fundación Leer in the year
2002, was carried out in the province of Neuquén. The goal of the program,
aimed for children between the ages of 9 and 12, is to contribute to the
development of the skills necessary for different spheres of life such as
family, school and work.

Early
literacy
We train parents
in social vulnerability situations
In the provinces of Buenos Aires and San Luis, the program “Shared
Beginnings” strengthened the work carried out by the Communitarian
Library “Itatí” and the Popular Library “Urbajo Joaquín Núñez”, enabling
them to offer early literacy services to the families in the area. In order
to do this, the library staff was trained and a space for children literature was created in each of the institutions with 300 new books for
children up to five years old. This way, a total of 150 parents gained
access to the advice and proposals of qualified agents to contribute to
their children’s literacy.

of nine argentinian provinces
Due to its hundredth anniversary, the company La Anónima supported
Fundación Leer in order to create Reading Corners in 57 local and popular
libraries in 55 locations throughout the country. This initiative also provided
the opportunity to update the librarians training and to strengthen the role
of libraries as literacy promoting agents in the community.

Cooperation
with city Councils
We worked together with
two city councils to improve the
education quality of their schools
The proposal consisted of a joint task between Fundación Leer and
the officers of the local and the Province City Council in order to
improve the quality of education in the cities of Montecarlo, province of Misiones and Puerto Madryn, province of Chubut.
The aim of the project developed in Puerto Madryn, province of
Chubut was the improvement of the articulation between kindergarten and first grade of Primary School.
The Project carried out in Montecarlo, province of Misiones included
the development of a process of certification for the institutions and
teachers who wish to lecture the training courses of Fundación Leer.
Thanks to this, the Teachers’ Association was approved by Fundación
Leer to lecture training courses.

Fundación Leer developed eight new training modules in the areas of reading
promotion, reading comprehension and reading and writing for critical
thinking.
The Project Language Clinics was developed as an answer to the issues
regarding reading comprehension stated by the school authorities of
Comodoro Rivadavia. It included three lectures, practical assignments and the
award of diplomas certified by the Ministry for those who completed the
course.

Homage to Berta Braslavsky
Berta Braslavsky was a member of the Advisory Council of Fundación Leer since 2004.
Dr. Braslavsky stated that: “The role of the teacher is certainly a vital role, very complex
and very rewarding. Above all, a teacher should be a passionate reader, interested in all
genres, to convey to the student the enthusiasm for reading.
But at the same time, the teacher must have an excellent professional background as to
be able to know its students and their cultural experiences and social environment according to the language and the educational level of the family they were raised in.
Teachers must have vast knowledge of the written language and have teaching skills to
implement group, individual and contextual strategies, also establishing a free-flowing
relationship with the family and the community. They must rely on the ability of their
students and also in themselves to influence their development.
Teachers need to harmonize their actions in a favorable academic environment, discussing
and planning their actions in a shared project. They need a committed headship to coordinate efforts with their colleagues, in order to create a space that favors support among
peers and continuity.
Fundación Leer thanks Berta Braslavsky (1913 - 2008) for the support given to our organization and her commitment to the literacy of the children of our country.

bring ‘Reach Out & Read’ to Argentina
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is an organization that promotes early literacy
from the pediatrician’s office by delivering new books to children and
raising awareness in parents about the importance of reading. Fundación
Leer, the Argentine Pediatric Society
and ROR Argentina launched in
Buenos Aires the Read to Grow
program, designed to promote
reading from the pediatric consultation. The proposal was developed at
the Hospital of San Justo and

International Book Fair in Buenos Aires
On the 34th International Book Fair in Buenos Aires Fundacion Leer’s Training Department
gave a series of workshops for educators and promoters of reading.
Fundación Leer is grateful to the campaign Editorial Albatros carried out in order to assemble
a reading corner at the Center for Prevention of Malnutrition and Primary Care located in the
neighborhood of Ceibos, district of Gonzalez Catán, Province of Buenos Aires.
Along with the children's hospital "Ricardo Gutiérrez"
The initiative brought forward by GlaxoSmithKline Argentina SA and coordinated by Fundacion Leer in Argentina, allowed the implementation of the program "Words that Keep Company" in the children’s hospital “Ricardo Gutierrez” located in the City of Buenos Aires.
The proposal enabled over 1,200 children to enjoy the mobile Reading Corner made up of
130 new literature books for children and young adults. A specialist of Fundación Leer was
placed in charge of the cart, that went along different areas of the hospital and gave 250
children the opportunity to choose a new book to take home.
Gallery of Authors
For another year, Fundación Leer together with Fundación Telefónica developed the program
Gallery of Authors, a virtual space for literature for children and young adults. In 2008, Pablo
de Santis joined the program. In previous programs, Gustavo Roldán, Cabal Graciela, Ana
Maria Shua, Luis María Pescetti, Esteban Valentino, among others, took part in the project.

Kidsmart Small Explorer
IBM Argentina along with Fundacion Leer coordinated the program Kidsmart Small Explorer for
the 7th consecutive year. 19 early childhood education institutions participated in this edition.

Fundación Leer organised
a creative writing competition:
“Reading And Creating:
Write a Fabulous Adventure”
Within the frame of the release of the Disney Studios and Walden Media
production The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Fundación Leer
organised the creative writing competition “Reading and Creating: Write a
fabulous adventure”, in which six hundred children throughout the country
participated. The competition, which took place between May and August,
intended to promote creative writing among children aged 7 to 12, building a bridge between audio-visual media and the children’s written production. The teachers that registered their students received advice, resources
and writing exercises to use in the classrooms.

“The Chronicles of Narnia:
Prince Caspian” Avant Première
in aid of Fundación Leer
The Walt Disney Company supported Fundación Leer by providing the possibility to
host an Avant premiere of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Tickets to the
event were offered in aid of the “Hogar de Niñas de la Sociedad Damas de la Misericordia,” a children’s home set in Buenos Aires City that shelters over 156 underprivileged girls between the ages of 4 and 13. For each ticket sold, a girl from the
institution was invited to the premiere, providing many of the girls with the opportunity to go to the movies for the very first time.

Volunteers

Volunteers from fundación leer
supported our teaching task
Verizon Business corporate volunteers participated in the
construction of three Reading Corners in different institutions in
Buenos Aires City, thus helping 825 children. The Project was
backed by Verizon Business.
80 corporate volunteers from Citibank N.A. worked together for
the construction and equipping of the Reading Corners in two
schools in Beccar, province of Buenos Aires: Escuela Nº 19 and
Escuela Nº 5 “Juán José Díaz”. Citibank N.A. volunteers delivered
200 new books for each Corner and also painted and fitted up
the facilities. The project was backed by the Citi Foundation.
Throughout the year, corporate volunteers of AESA participated
in the construction of a Reading Corner in their own company,
developing literacy related activities among the employees and
their families.
Over 50 volunteers from Culligan Argentina S.A. participated in
the 6th National Reading Marathon. From their Call Center, the
volunteers invited schools to take part in the marathon. Also, the
day of the marathon, they shared and enjoyed reading related
activities in the kindergarten “Jardín de Infantes Nº2” in Flores.

Corporate Volunteers from Atento Argentina supported the
National Reading Marathon by calling different institutions
throughout the country to invite and encourage them to register.
Volunteers of UPS Argentina along with part of the staff of
Fundación Leer dedicated one day to create didactic materials.
These were delivered to 16 institutions in the Moreno area that
participated in the program Family of Readers. The project was
backed by the UPS Foundation.
Along with the volunteers that every day approach Fundación
Leer, and thanks to the support of an individual donor, we were
able to create a Reading Corner in a school in Buenos Aires, the
Escuela Infantil Nº 2 “Pampita”, helping 156 children.
Our volunteers of helped us raise funds through the HelpArgentina Night project. Over 150 people came together to raise funds
in aid of Fundación Leer by hosting meetings in different cities
such as Washington, London, Puerto Rico, New York and Buenos
Aires. Thanks to the initiative’s high support, the school “Filii
Dei”, located in the Villa 31, an underprivileged neighbourhood of
Buenos Aires City, was able to enjoy its first Reading Corner.
During 2008, thanks to agreements with Harvard University,
Middlebury College, College of Charleston, Alzea, ADEEI and
COPA, 15 volunteers collaborated with our mission.

On October the 3rd, under the motto “Reading is an adventure without frontiers. Dare yourself to discover new worlds”
the sixth national reading marathon was carried out with lots
of participants. The marathon is a free and non-competitive
educational event which invites children and teenagers from
all over the country to enjoy books and reading for pleasure.

The Resourses and their Use
During the period of the development of the activities, the contributions we received
from local and international foundations, individuals, institutions and private companies, all of them highly engaged in the education and the future of the children of our
country, allowed us to provide 223.631 children and young adults with 223.645 new
literature books chosen by the communities. 78.695 new books became, in many
cases, the first addition to the families’ libraries.

Among the goals and aspirations of Fundación Leer, we can mention the need for our
own headquarters to improve operational costs without affecting the resources
destined to the acquisition of books or the teacher training courses and the promotion
of reading. This is not an easy objective, but we are working hard on the creation of a
fund, capitalizing the results of the year’s activities when possible. This is why we will
propose to the annual assembly the capitalization of the results of the fiscal year and
of the results accumulated till the present day.
After the end of the fiscal year, the international crisis and national economic situation
have deteriorated, making it possible to foresee a difficult 2009. In spite of this, the
Board of Directors will make its most sincere efforts to limit the impact of the crisis
and allow Fundación Leer to continue to offer reading promoting programs throughout
Argentina, as it has been doing since 1997.

Perspectives
The year 2009 will be year in which all the difficulties derived from the worldwide
economic crisis that started in 2008 will hardly be overcome. This will undoubtedly
affect all the sectors, including the economy of Fundación Leer since its activities
depend exclusively on the private contributions of national and international
individuals, companies and institutions.
In spite of this, Fundación Leer will make its best to continue working for the achievement of its mission.
It is our commitment to deepen our reading promoting programs and continue
working on the addition of new resources to improve the quality of education in
general and literacy in particular, helping those communities throughout the country
who need it the most.
To assure this, we will carry out new projects like “Auto-evaluation Resources for the
Improvement of Teaching Practices in Reading Promotion, Reading Comprehension
and Critical Thinking” which focuses on offering a theoretical framework and updated
strategies to contribute to the improvement of the teaching practice. Also,
Fundación Leer will offer the first distance training course, developed in cooperation
with the Open Society Institute. Additionally, we will work to improve our systems
and processes in search for a more efficient organization and implementation of our
projects.
We will undoubtedly continue to make our most sincere efforts to deliver books to
children and their families all over the country, a key aspect in the fulfillment of our
mission, as we have done until the present day.
