The city of San Antonio has been in the national spotlight
for many positive reasons these past few weeks.
The Spurs are doing well in the playoffs, Mayor Julián
Castro was nominated by President Barack Obama to run
the HUD Program, and now UTSA’s marching band, The
Spirit of San Antonio, was selected as the official university
to represent the United States at the D-Day 70th Anniversary
Parade in Normandy, France.
On June 6, 1944, allied forces invaded Nazi-occupied
France and stormed the beaches in Normandy in an effort to
liberate mainland Europe during World War II. Every year
on the anniversary, a celebration is held to commemorate all
the veterans that fought in World War II and especially those

A little more than two weeks
after a Texas delegation, which
included State Sen. Carlos Uresti
and Dallas Republic State Rep. Jason Villalba, traveled west to court
the makers of Sriracha HOT Chili
Sauce.
Their goal was to woo the popular chili sauce maker Sriracha to
move to Texas, more specifically
San Antonio.
The company was under pressure and labeled a public nuisance
after locals complained of the
fumes the plant emitted from the
production of the chili sauce.
But, the issue surrounding the
Irwindale, Calif. plant that produces
Sriricha was resolved Wednesday
night.
Reportedly, the state of California entered the fray at the last
minute.

Un mapa recién publicado por
el Pew Research Center muestra,
gráficamente, que en los pasados
cien años México se ha convertido
en la fuente de la mayor cantidad
de inmigrantes a Estados Unidos, a
diferencia de un siglo atrás cuando
lo fue Alemania.
A través de dos mapas, la institución muestra el país de origen
de los inmigrantes (basados en
censos pasados y recientes), estado
por estado.
Actualmente, Estados Unidos
registra más de 40 millones de
inmigrantes y sigue siendo el
principal destino de del mundo.
En el primer mapa se muestra
que para 1910, la mayoría de inmigrantes provenían de Europa,
y principalmente de Alemania.
Después de los inmigrantes alemanes, les seguían los italianos,
ingleses, canadienses, entre otros.
Mientras que los inmigrantes
mexicanos se concentraban más
en estados como Arizona, Nuevo
México y Texas.
Y en el segundo mapa (2010,

Develan mejoras urbanas
en zona Guadalupe

La histórica zona Guadalupe,
al oeste de la ciudad, siempre
ha sido considerada como un
patrimonio de San Antonio. Es
por esto que el proyecto entre
las calles S. Brazos y El Paso fue
develado el viernes pasado con el
fin de proporcionar sitios renova-
dos y con paisajes modernizados.
Al corte de listón asistieron la
concejal del Distrito 5, Shirley
Gonzales, el asistente del director
de la compañía Transportation
& Capital Improvements, Razi
Hosseini, y la directora ejecutiva
y curadora de Guadalupe Cultural
Arts Center, Patty Ortiz.

from elementary and keep them
engaged through high school.
Beginning this coming school
year, elementary students in the
gifted and talented (GT) program
will have hands on experience in
robotics, science experiments and
other STEM related activities.
“What we’re really hoping for
is a peer to peer conversation
about all these wonderful things
they do and hopefully it will create
interest in our other elementary
students that will want to take
part in the STEM curriculum,”
Khosravi said.
Over the next few years, the
district will start to infuse a STEM
curriculum in all elementary
school students.
Currently, Harlandale ISD’s
four middle schools offer STEM
related afterschool activities such
as Science Core and Robotics, but
next year students will be exposed
to STEM activities during the
school day.
San Antonio based Tesoro
Corp. is funding eight middle
school teachers, two from each
middle school in the district, a
two-week training at UT Tyler
on STEM skills they can teach
during the school day.

If all goes as planned, Hispanics
may be the next face of careers in
science, technology, engineering
and math.
Currently, Hispanics only make
up as much as 6.5 percent of the
STEM workforce, according to a
survey released by the U.S. Census Bureau.
With a 97 percent Hispanic
population, Harlandale Independent School District is taking
matters into its own hands.
According to STEM Coordinator for Harlandale ISD, Anthony
Khosravi, the problem lies in a
lack of STEM exposure.
“We haven’t really helped our
students see that they could also
become engineers,” Khosravi
told La Prensa. “We haven’t introduced an engineer to some of
our elementary students so they
see police people and firefighters
and they associate that with what
they want to be.”
To bridge the disparity gap,
Harlandale ISD developed a
STEM pipeline project that aims

¿Yo? Sí, usted

Durante meses estuve buscando una entrevista con John
Boehner, el líder de la Cámara
de Representantes. Y todas las
veces me dijo que no.
Así que me monté en un avión,
fui a Washington, me metí en
una conferencia de prensa que
él estaba dando, y el resultado no
fue nada agradable. Pero como
periodista y como inmigrante,
había que hacerlo.
“¿Por qué está usted bloqueando la reforma migratoria?”,
le pregunté a Boehner en la
conferencia de prensa.
“¿Yo?”, me dijo, riéndose.
“Sí, usted,” le contesté. “Podría llevarla a votación pero no
lo ha hecho”.
A Boehner no le gustó la pregunta, y me puso cara de malos
amigos. Ni modo. La verdad es
que él es el principal responsable de que no se legalice a 11
millones de indocumentados.
Hace casi un año que el Senado
aprobó una propuesta de ley.
Pero Boehner y los republicanos
han hecho todo lo posible para
boicotearla. Había que desenmascararlos.
“No hay nadie más interesado
en arreglar este problema que
yo”, me dijo. Pero millones de
latinos no le creen. Son puras
palabras. Boehner, luego, le echó
la culpa al presidente, Barack
Obama. Dijo que no confía en
él. Esa es otra excusa.
Los republicanos podrían
aprobar una ley que entre en
vigor en el 2017 –cuando Obama
deje el poder– y tampoco están
dispuestos a hacer eso.
Ante esto hay una sola conclusión: el hombre que está
deteniendo la reforma migratoria
en el Congreso se llama John
Boehner. Nadie más.
A pesar de todo, la estrategia
del Partido Demócrata y de la
Casa Blanca es darle un poco
más de tiempo a Boehner y a
los republicanos para rectificar.
Creo que es una falsa esperan
za. Pero la pregunta es ¿hasta
cuándo?
Charles Schumer, senador
demócrata de Nueva York, me
dijo que la fecha límite para
que los republicanos hagan algo
respecto a la reforma migratoria
puede extenderse hasta el viernes
31 de julio. Después de eso, ya
no hay tiempo para nada.
Los congresistas se van de vacaciones todo el mes de agosto.
Todo. En septiembre solo trabajan 10 días, dos en octubre, siete
en noviembre y apenas ocho días
en diciembre. En esos períodos
tan cortos es imposible legislar
sobre un tema tan complicado.
¿Por qué los republicanos
no quieren pasar una reforma
migratoria?
Puede ser un cálculo político
para ganar en las elecciones de
este noviembre, una estrategia
para atacar a Obama o bien
terquedad e ignorancia. Pero,
sea lo que sea, si no aprueban la
legalización de indocumentados
van a sufrir las consecuencias
por años.
Según la Oficina del Censo, en
el 2060 habrá en Estados Unidos
129 millones de latinos, 31 por
ciento de la población. Nadie
podrá ser elegido sin los votantes
hispanos. Y lo peor que puede
hacer el Partido Republicano es
pelearse con el grupo electoral de
mayor crecimiento. Si siguen así
van a perder la Casa Blanca por
varias generaciones.
Pero me temo que eso no lo
ven. Hasta hoy solo han dado
muestras de una impresionante
miopía política y de muy poca
compasión por los inmigrantes.
Por ahora no veo señal alguna
de esperanza. Así que después
del verano la lucha de los inmi-
grantes va a cambiar. En lugar
de buscar que los republicanos
aprueben una reforma migratoria, el esfuerzo se va a concentrar en que Obama suspenda la
mayoría de las deportaciones de
inmigrantes.
Obama ha deportado a más de
2 millones de inmigrantes y ha
separado muchas familias latinas
en seis años. ¿Deben parar las
protestas contra Obama hasta
julio? ¿Hay que darle una tregua?
Es muy difícil pedirle eso a un
padre o a una madre en peligro
de deportación.
Mientras tanto, me quedan
claras tres cosas: Una, si no hay
una reforma migratoria este verano, la culpa es de los republicanos y de su líder, Boehner. Dos,
los latinos no se van a olvidar
de esto tan fácilmente. Y tres,
dudo que Boehner me quiera dar
pronto una entrevista. Pero al
menos ya sé dónde encontrarlo.

The campaign for November is underway
State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte
The party primaries are over,
and the Democratic and Republican Party voters have chosen
their candidates. I finally know
who my opponent is in the race
for Lieutenant Governor: Houston state Senator Dan Patrick.
And when Texas voters return
to the polls in November, they
will have a clear-cut choice:
a leader who is on the side of
Texas families, employers and
workers with a history of putting Texas first, or a politician
whose my-way-or-the-highway
attitude would hurt Texas,
infecting us with Washingtonstyle dysfunction.
Throughout this campaign
and as the results came in Tuesday night, I received calls from
business leaders concerned
about the future of our state.
Like Texas business owners,
and Texans across this entire
state, I know that it’s time that
politicians like Dan Patrick put
their toxic rhetoric to rest.
Texans want us to make smart
business decisions: building our
universities and community
colleges, and supporting our
local neighborhood schools.
They want roads, not rhetoric;
investments to help deliver water to their businesses, homes,
farms and ranches. They know
Texans needs leaders who make
smart business decisions for the
Lone Star state, by bringing the
brightest minds at the table, regardless of political party.
Just look at this comment that
came in from William Austin
Ligon, the co-founder and retired CEO of CarMax:
“As the co-founder of CarMax and an angel-stage investor, I know the value entrepreneurs play in driving sustainable
economic growth. Leticia Van
de Putte understands the needs
of small business and entrepreneurs: she owned her own small
business — a pharmacy — for
years, and her husband, Pete,
has owned his family business
for years. Leticia is a fighter
for small businesses and is the
clear choice for Lt. Governor
this November.”
Or this one from San Antonio restaurant owner Louis
Barrios, who normally votes
Republican:
“My mother, Viola Barrios,
started Los Barrios Restaurant
with $3,000 in an old boat garage in San Antonio. She made
many sacrifices in order to raise
my sisters and me. I support
Leticia Van de Putte for Lt.
Governor because she — like
my mother — has made many
sacrifices not only for her family, but also for entrepreneurs
and small business owners. She
works hard and cares deeply
about Texans.”
They spoke up for me because
they know that my opponent
will not support the neighborhood schools necessary to build
an educated workforce attractive to employers, whereas I
spent the past few sessions
working hard with legislators
of both parties to improve our
schools’ curriculum and reduce
high-stakes testing.
They spoke up for me because
I want to improve relations with
Texas’ number one trading partner — Mexico — while my opponent degrades undocumented
immigrants trying to provide
for their family by calling them
“an illegal invasion” and incorrectly accuses them of bringing
disease to our nation.
It’s time to stop whipping up
fear and instead provide leadership and create opportunities.
Just put Texas first. That’s
what my campaign for lieutenant governor is all about. It’s
time to put good policy before
bad politics.
The danger is intervention, not “isolation”

A lot of people are warning
against America turning “isolationist.” We can dismiss the
warnings—special pleadings,
really—emanating from other
countries, where people have
free-ridden on American taxpayers for decades. If Europeans are
worried about defending themselves, why are they cutting their
military budgets? Not that we
should mind if they do, but they
should not look to us to pick up
any slack.
President Obama and Defense
Secretary Chuck Hagel are the
latest to express concern that the
American appetite for managing
foreign conflicts is waning. In his
West Point speech, Obama said
the military is the “backbone” of
American leadership, even as he
claimed that force is not the first
answer to every problem. And
Hagel recently told some foreignpolicy wonks in Chicago that it
would be “a mistake to view our
global responsibilities as a burden or charity.” How would he
propose that we taxpayers view
them? As a privilege?
Hagel said that withdrawing
from the world would have a
high cost. Has he checked lately
on what military and political engagement is costing the taxpayers? The full cost of the military
alone is over a trillion dollars
a year. The U.S. government
spends more on this than most of
the rest of the world combined.
Hagel also said, “Turning
inward, history teaches us, does
not insulate us from the world’s
troubles. It only forces us to be
more engaged later—at a higher
cost, at a higher cost in blood and
treasure, and often on the terms
of others.”
Hagel is wrong about history.
When have American politicians
ever disengaged from the world?
Even James Monroe (of Monroe
Doctrine fame) and his secretary
of state, John Quincy Adams, intervened in a Greek civil war. The
entire Western hemisphere was
seen as America’s concern by
its rulers. The refusal to join the
League of Nations after World
War I was more an assertion of
unilateralism over encumbering
multilateralism than a rejection
of engagement.
And surely Hagel can’t be
referring to the period before the
Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor,
because he must know that Franklin Delano Roosevelt did everything in his power to maneuver
Germany or Japan, as Secretary
of War Henry Stimson famously
put it, into “firing the first shot.”
Many people think the alQaeda attacks on Sept. 11, 2001,
resulted from disengagement,
but that conflicts with the facts.
Osama bin Laden said al-Qaeda
was striking out against decades
of brutal U.S. intervention, direct
and indirect, in Iraq, Palestine,
and elsewhere in the Arab Muslim world.
Those high costs in blood and
treasure were the consequences
of intervention, not “isolationism.” That’s why the case for
political and military disengagement is so strong. The butcher’s
bill and the money price cannot
be tolerated. America’s record of
death, injury, and destruction has
on net created enemies. The gross
cultural and economic distortions
from worshipful militarism have
yet to be calculated.
And let’s not forget another
cost: the toll on Americans ordered to kill and repress fellow
human beings in other countries.
(I don’t mean to relieve indi-
vidual members of the military of
their responsibility; they volunteered and chose to obey orders
unquestioningly.)
President Obama says he will
draw down forces in Afghanistan, and this upsets the militarists, such as Sens. Lindsey
Graham and John McCain and
the editorial boards of the Wall
Street Journal and Washington
Post. Yet under the plan, after
2015, a U.S. force will remain
to support a regime that many
Afghans don’t support. That is
not disengagement.
Even people who are tired of
Afghanistan after 13 years want
Obama to intervene more directly
in Syria. Have they learned nothing? There is no such thing as a
clean and simple intervention
with just the result sought. The
war in Afghanistan, ostensibly
intended to eradicate al-Qaeda,
served to spread an intensified
jihadist movement to Iraq, Syria,
the Arabian Peninsula, and North
Africa, and the Horn of Africa.
NATO’s air strikes in Libya
spread arms and battle-trained
jihadis into West Africa. The
law of unintended consequences
makes fools of so-called leaders.
Danger, then, lies not in
“isolationism”—a misnomer if
global trade and travel are freed.
Rather, it lies in a rogue and
delusional U.S. government that
tries to police the world.

There something to
learn about losing
The recent trend or notion that
everyone is a winner will cripple
the psyche of our youth.
As we enter summer and there
is more free time to spend with
children, think about what you’re
teaching them about winning and
losing.
Nowadays, children are receiving an award or prize for losing.
This, in effect, tells them it is OK
to just show up.
The thought behind the “everyone is a winner” idea is to
not make the child feel like a he
or she is not a failure by awarding them for at least trying. But,
sometimes trying is just not
enough.
Moreover, what does it teach
children about not giving up and
the motivation for improvement?
There is something to be
learned from losing. In fact, you
learn more from losing than you
do winning.
Along with losing you learn to
control your emotions and handle
the loss with class or to learn how
to be a good sport when things
don’t go your way.
If children are coddled and
never allowed to fail then they
will never develop the ability to
cope with loss and give credit
where it is due.
Winning, on the other hand,
teaches that if you work hard
enough you will be rewarded.
And, with victory comes the feelings of accomplishment. And, in
some cases, it teaches teamwork.
Being coddled and awarded
for just showing up teaches a
child nothing and hinders them
from developing emotionally. If
a child can’t handle losing, when
they become an adult and lose
how will they handle it?
Those feelings of failure need
to be felt at a young age to develop the skill set to be a graceful loser. More importantly, it’s
vital for a young child to know
it is OK to lose. Children should
know that they’re not always
going to win because there can
only be one true winner or one
winning team.
Trophies are reserved for accomplishing something others
could not do. Children should be
taught that when they work hard
and put in the effort that they’ll
be rewarded accordingly. They
will then be able to look back at
their achievements and remember what it took to accomplish
such feats.
This idea that every child is
a winner needs to be looked at
again by parents to understand
what the negative outcomes will
be if it continues. Like childhood
obesity, the mental stability of
children could be the nation’s
next epidemic if we’re not careful.

El dinero es lo que mueve sus
emociones y regocija sus corazones. No importa cómo lo consigan: ilegalmente, engañando,
haciendo trampas, robando lo
que no les pertenece y pisoteando
a sus amigos y hasta su propia
familia.
Es más que un delito. Es legitimar la inmoralidad y el pecado
solo con el fin de cumplir un
sueño: ¡Ser ricos cueste lo que
cueste!
Jordan Belfort es un hombre
de la vida real. En su historia se
basó la película protagonizada
por Leonardo Di Caprio y dirigida por Martín Scorsese: “El
Lobo de Wall Street”, la cual he
visto varias veces para entender el
trasfondo de esa triste condición
que revela los más bajos instintos
humanos: sexo, lujuria, codicia y
crimen.
La esencia de la película es obtener riqueza sin respetar las leyes
y disfrutarla extralimitándose
moralmente: abusando de las drogas, prostituyéndose y robando.
En la cinta endiosan el dinero, la
cocaína, el crack y la heroína. Se
consagran a los estupefacientes
como si fuese el mejor estímulo
para tener la fortaleza de alcanzar
la cima.
No conozco a Belfort ni lo quie
ro conocer. Él es el ejemplo de
esos estadounidenses que fingen
respetar la ley pero descaradamente la violan con la idea de que
ser millonario es un privilegio que
otorga la libertad de la nación.
Argumentan que la felicidad es
un derecho constitucional, pero,
al parecer, lo hacen sin respetar
la felicidad ajena.
Ese tipo de películas son las
que han influenciado a los niños y
jóvenes para cometer atrocidades,
como lo hizo Elliot Rodger, el
hijo de Peter Rodger, que fuese
director asistente de la película
“Juegos del Hambre”, quien
recientemente protagonizó una
matanza en Santa Bárbara, California, argumentando que era el
“pago por la soledad, rechazo y
deseos no cumplidos”. Elliot lo
justificó en un video subido a
YouTube, diciendo que siempre
fue ignorado por las chicas.
En este caso, el joven de 22
años, ambicionaba poder dominarlas. Son las mismas metas que
ha promovido Hollywood a través
de los años, con personajes macabros, envidiosos e insaciables.
Un ejemplo son las Kardashian,
jovencitas sin cultura y educación
que se han vuelto famosas haciendo reality shows basura.
Son ejemplo de la decadencia
humana. Mujeres que pretenden
conseguir un reino casándose con
hombres ricos y poderosos.
Así se basan muchas de las
normas impuestas por una sociedad salvaje que vuelve a la gente
perversa y ambiciosa.
Ninguno de esos personajes
hollywoodenses es un héroe ni
un ejemplo a seguir. Ninguno
merece aplausos porque consiguen el dinero a costa de la ruina
y la decepción de otras personas
que sueñan con imitarlos.
Belfort es la figura gráfica de
esos personajes ambiciosos cuyo
afán es acumular riqueza a costa
de los demás.
No merecen loas los corredores
de bolsa como Belfort y tampoco
los banqueros que arruinaron la
vida de muchos estadounidenses
al mantenerse cómplices de la
llamada burbuja inmobiliaria;
tampoco debemos premiar con
nuestra admiración a criminales
como los narcotraficantes de las
telenovelas.
El mejor dinero ganado es el
que se consigue trabajando honestamente y no se le arrebata a quien
confía en nosotros. Los héroes no
son los lobos hambrientos.

Calendario de la comunidad
LANIER HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1964 REUNION – The
Lanier High School Class of 1964 is looking for graduates to attend
the 50th Class Reunion. The event will be held November 15, 2014.
There will be music by Karizma (with Mansanto), a silent auction and
door prizes. Social hour is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dinner and mariachis
is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A dance will also take place from 8:30 p.m.

While food banks throughout the
country are in need, the FeedSA
food drive announced a record
number of donations at the San Antonio Food Bank on Wednesday.
FeedSA was established by
City Church in spring 2009, but
has since expanded its collection
efforts to include all three City
Church locations and an additional
11 faith based organizations.
The 2014 Feed SA initiative
collected city-wide donations
from the weekend of March 8 to
Easter Sunday, reporting a total of
421,704 pounds of food received,
enough food to provide 329,456
meals.
“Our collections this year are
more than double than what they
were last year, and last year’s
donations were nearly double the
number of the previous year. The
program is on a trajectory that is
running straight up,” Eric S. Cooper, president and CEO of the San
Antonio Food Bank said.
Although the program is hosted
by faith-based organizations, the
collections will help the San Antonio Food Bank’s partner networks

that help feed 58,000 people in 16

Teach for America takes 100 Club honors families
on “summer slide”
of first responders

Summer vacations are traditionally a time off for students;
a time for summer blockbusters,
swimming pools, vacations and
video games, but that doesn’t
mean they should be unproductive.
When students break for the
summer but have nowhere to go
while their parents are at work,
they can fall into what is known
in the academic community as
“summer slide,” where they return to school in the fall up to two
months behind where they were
in the spring.
Teach for America and the
San Antonio Independent School
District recognized the need expressed by educators, parents and
students alike in the San Antonio
community for engaging activities for students to participate in
during the summer months so
they organized a fair to feature
various community organizations
and nonprofits offering free or
reduced-cost activities for children of all ages.
The fair was a modest event,
situated in the backyard of a
house owned by the Guadalupe
Cultural Arts Center. Students
and families were welcome to
enjoy some tasty paletas as they
browsed through the booths.
San Antonio is rich with opportunity but oftentimes parents
and students don’t get connected
with summer programs and miss
out on the opportunities they offer
to help students keep their math
and science skills fresh, stimulate
imagination and creativity, and
explore their interests beyond the
classroom.
“We know that the San Antonio
community has many wonderful
opportunities that will enrich the
minds and bodies of our students
over the summer months. We
hope that this fair will help connect students and parents with
valuable programs to help address the summer slide and will
ultimately put our students on the
path to success,” Laura Saldivar
Luna, executive director of Teach
for America San Antonio said.
“Summer slide” tends to affect
low-income students the most and
the loss is cumulative, meaning
they may never recover the lost
time while their middle and upper
class peers make gains during the
summer. This makes affordable,
in addition to high quality, programming essential.
A majority of the organizations at the fair, such as Girls
Inc. and Venture Lab, meet these
criteria. They offer programs that
stimulate students’ minds and
bodies and also offer need-based
scholarships.
“I am thrilled to know that our
families will be informed about
such opportunities through the
Spring into Summer Fair at the
Guadalupe Center,” Melanie
Zepeda, principal at J.T. Brackenridge Elementary said.
Parents can also combat “summer slide” – reading together,
playing rhyming games, taking a
trip to a museum or simply reading street signs and menu prices
can all help. For older students,
a part-time job along with volunteer work can give them extra
cash, helpful experience, and
build up their college resumes.
Teach for America has been
integral in bridging the opportunity gap in low income San
Antonio schools and this tradition continues into the summer.
The Spring into Summer Fair

strengthen in the future and give
San Antonio students the best
chance at academic and future
success.

Durante la develación se
mostraron las calles renovadas
que forman parte del Proyecto
del Área Guadalupe, el cual dio
inicio en septiembre del 2013 y
que planea desarrollar las zonas
peatonales ubicadas al oeste de
la calle S. Brazos.
“Tenemos Avenida Guadalupe
a un costado, el Guadalupe Café,
calles en donde la comunidad
camina a diario, sitios educativos
y un auditorio”, describió Gonzales. “Por eso queremos recordarle
a todos que no solo San Antonio
es una ciudad modelo, sino también el distrito 5, un área en donde
todos disfrutan vivir”, agregó.
Desde un mejoramiento en los
paisajes, las bancas, bastidores
de bicicletas, hasta un estacionamiento con rejas entre la calle S.
Brazos y El Paso. Asimismo, las
calles contarán con nuevas indicaciones de tráfico que incluyen señales audibles para los peatones.
“Todo esto comenzó como un
esfuerzo de la comunidad, y como
sabemos que muchas mamás
caminan para recoger a sus hijos
de la escuela y los jóvenes caminan de su preparatoria a casa, nos
dimos cuenta de que algo debía
hacerse para mejorar la zona y
ofrecer un lugar como este al
distrito”, explicó la curadora
Patty Ortiz.
Asimismo, entre lágrimas Ortiz
agradeció a quienes participaron
en el proyecto y les aseguró que
nada hubiera sido posible sin su
ayuda.
“Una de las cosas más bonitas
del Guadalupe Cultural Arts
Center es que nos gusta crear
comunidades bellas en donde las

manera saludable”, dijo Ortiz.
De acuerdo a la curadora, lo
que se puede ver actualmente es
tan solo el inicio de un plan que
se ha ido desarrollando y que
continuará mejorando.
Otro de los propósitos del
proyecto es decorar las calles con
arte que interprete la cultura de la
comunidad del área.
Una serie de tres diseños de
autobuses formarán parte de esta
zona. Esto representará a la cul-
tura (hispana) que se encuentra
comúnmente en los hogares del
oeste de la ciudad.
Dichos diseños se podrán apreciar a finales de la temporada de
verano.
El proyecto fue dirigido por
Transportation & Capital Improvements, y fue creado por
medio de un fondo de ahorros
para el arte público de parte del
Community Development Block
Grant, que comenzó su recaudación en el 2007.

Community leaders and organizations honored the most
recent fallen first responders at
the 17th annual 100 Club of San
Antonio luncheon last week.
The 100 Club screened several video tributes throughout
the luncheon to commemorate
the life and the families of fallen
SAPD Officer Robert Deckard,
Trinity University Police Officer Marc Kelley, and Highway
Patrol Sgt. Paul Hernandez.
The 100 Club is a non-profit
that raises funds to help the families of fallen first responders,
especially surviving children.
As of 2014, the organization
supports 18 children who are
under the age of 18 in a special
survivors fund. There is also a
special trust fund for collegeaged survivors.

in August, the school will allow
130 students to attain an associate’s degree or up to 30 hours of
college credit while earning their
high school diploma.
In fact, because of the way
graduation schedules are coordinated, students will receive their
associate’s degree a few weeks
before they even receive their
high school diploma.
The school will offer curriculum basics like English and history but will leap into advanced
programs like robotics and automation, 3D modeling and introductions to engineering careers.
By increasing the emphasis in
science, technology, engineering
and math programs, Harlandale
officials believe the outcome
will result in a greater number of
students earning college degrees
in those fields.

working to defy the low Hispanic
statistics in STEM fields. Both
students claimed they had no

but since joining Science Core
they’re both set on a career in the
STEM field.
As a part of Science Core, the
students give up their Friday
evenings to do hands on science
experiments and they get to speak
to professionals in the STEM field
and graduates from top universities.
“We thought [Science Core]
was going to be boring,” Gallegos
told La Prensa. “But we’re learning so much information and we
are loving it.”
The girls couldn’t stop raving
about a recent trip Science Core
took to Galveston where they
got to learn about numerous sea
creatures.
Gallegos hopes to be a physician assistant and Velazquez is
set on being an engineer.
According to a report from
Georgetown University Center
on Education and the Workforce,
65 percent of people with Bachelor’s degrees in STEM occupations earn more than people with
Master’s degrees in non-STEM
occupations and 47 percent of
Bachelor’s degrees in STEM occupations earn more than PhDs in
non-STEM occupations.
Additionally, the report also indicates that an associate’s degree
in a STEM field will pay more
than a Bachelor’s in other careers.
The success of the STEM Pipeline Project will be measured by
the P16Plus Council of Greater
Bexar County, the council is
dedicated to ensuring the educational success of students in Bexar
County from Pre-K through their
last year of college, which would
be year 16.
Vice Chairman of P16Plus,
James Adams, who was once a
Harlandale student and went on to
become president of Southwestern Bell and chairman of Texas
Instruments, joked that if he were
to be born again, he would either
want to be a Hispanic male or a
Hispanic female.
“Opportunities are there very
much so for those of you that
happens to be Hispanic and those
of you who happen to be female,”
Adams told the students. “There’s
a future out there, I’m looking for
you guys to grab it.”

La Prensa spoke to a very
proud Dr. Ron Ellis, principal
conductor at UTSA, who explained that this is a once in a life
time opportunity for two reasons.
The first being that they were
hand-selected after being scouted
and interviewed by the official
D-Day committee and the second being because it’s usually
military marching bands that get
to the journey across the pond to
represent our nation.
Due to budget cuts, the military
could no longer afford to fly entire bands and their instruments
out of the country.
“These things are usually done
two or three years in advanced,”
Ellis said. “So, big committees of
veterans had the task of scouring
the Internet for college bands.”
Ellis also explained that UTSA
was selected because of the new
programs and the advancement
in music education the university
offers.
When news broke in the fall,
44 students and 18 parents then
had to hit the ground running
doing various forms of personal
fundraising.
“They were excited to do it, a
lot of their parents and grandparents are veterans and San Antonio
is home to a lot of military families,” Ellis said.

are generously paying the fees for
the bus transportation and the cost
to transport the instruments which
could be very costly.
The band will perform in front
of the President of France François Hollande and the entire event
will be broadcasted on national
television in France. One of the
songs they had to learn was “Hail
to the Chief” because there’s a
chance President Obama will be
in attendance, as well.
The band will stay in France
for eight days while of course
making the trip to Paris to visit
landmarks such as The Eiffel
Tower and the Louvre Museum.
“It says a lot about our city and
our university to think that we’re

Just a Thought: A Veteran’s story
Last week San Antonio celebrated Memorial Day at various locations around town. My

and background of the national
holiday, but listed the various places family, friends and

In my case I participated in
a well-attended ceremony at
Fort Sam Houston National
Cemetery despite the torrential
rainfall. As luck would have
it, the rain hit moments after
the ceremony concluded to
everyone’s relief as everyone
scurried to get to their vehicles.
As a Viet Nam and Desert
Storm Veteran, I alternate each
year between the Edgewood
Memorial Stadium ceremony
and the bigger gathering at Ft.
Sam Houston to honor those
heroes who served. The year,
before I attended Edgewood’s
ceremony.
As a former teacher at Memorial High School, I have
ties to both places as my father
is buried at Fort Sam having
served in the Second World
War. The Edgewood Class of
1967, I noted last week, has the
dubious distinction of losing
more graduates as casualties
in the Viet Nam War than any
other high school in the San
Antonio Metroplex.
It was a great salute to all
those from the San Antonio
area who have worn the Army,
Navy, Marine, Air Force or
Coast Guard uniform during
the 1st and 2nd World Wars,
Korea, Viet Nam, Afghanistan
and Iraq. Some in attendance
had relatives who actually
served as far back as the Civil
War when the holiday was
first originated. The closing
remarks were given by the
Director of the Selective Service Larry Romo appointed
by President Barack Obama as
only the second Hispanic and
local San Antonio native to
serve in that position. I have
previously written about Romo
in a past La Prensa column.
Unfortunately we have recently been inundated with
horror stories by the national
media about revelations that
veterans at various VA hospitals across the country have
been denied medical treatment
and may have died due to extremely long waits between
doctor visits.
Since the various news outlets have covered stories of
alleged misconduct by VA officials, numerous veterans have
shared with me their concerns
about the length of time it takes
to get responses on their disability claims.
One of my fellow veterans
shared with me that he filed a
claim nearly two years ago for
the effects of exposure to Agent
Orange, loss of hearing, failing
eyesight, and various other ailments connected to his service
in Viet Nam. Ironically my
buddy served a tour with another unit down the road from
my unit in Phu Bai, which overlapped my tour by one month
although I never knew he was
there until the mid-90s when
we met and compared notes.

shared with me that he applied
for disability last year and was
finally scheduled for a physical this year nearly 13 months
later. He was discouraged when
he showed up for his physical
and the Doctor hastily asked
him to breathe, tapped his feet
for nerve damage and asked
three questions before being
arbitrarily dismissed after ten
minutes. He shared that he was
very discouraged. However, his
arduous journey was eventually
successful as he was awarded
an acceptable amount of disability that also included a reduction in his property tax. The
letter he received also stated
that the disability awarded
would be back dated to the date
he originally filed his claim so
he received that compensation.
With all the added problems
now facing Veterans, those
we celebrated last week and
hopefully throughout the year
will now be given the treatment
they so deserve in a timely
manner. We can only hope and
pray that happens.
And as always, I write “Just
a Thought.”

Eastside finally gets a financial institute

The financial institution will now
serve the youth and seniors of
the area.
“It allows those individuals
to learn financial responsibility,
open savings accounts and learn
about financial literacy,” Hargrove
said. “There’s no financial institution here that I know of on the
Eastside.”

McDaniel emphasized that the
branch was opened to all and not
limited to Ella Austin Community
Center members.
“This is the best way to reach
this community, so it’s open to
those who work here, who live
in the neighborhood, who go to
school in the neighborhood, who
go to church in the neighborhood, it’s for all those folks,” she
explained.
She added the credit union
looked at who visits the center on
a daily basis. She said they found
that it’s seniors who are the biggest
prey for banks. They’re the one
that pay high fees just for having
a simple checking account.
“So many of our services are
free of charge, if not minimal
charge, because we want to reach
out to those folks to better save
them money and show them how
to do proper banking,” Barrera
McDaniel said. “Credit unions
are different. We do a lot of things
different.”
Among those differences is that
they’re run by volunteers, they
don’t have a board that is paid.
All the volunteers are dedicated
members who have stepped up
to the plate, according to Barrera.
By opening a branch, she said,
they’re so close to the community
that they can walk here and do
their business, she describes it as
an extension of their services from
opening accounts, deposits, working with the seniors to loaning
money. At the same time, they’ll
be able to use direct deposit for
their Social Security checks.
“The other things we’re combating in this area are payday
lenders,” she said. “We’ve come
up with a new program that is a
means to try and get these people
away from these high priced loan
products; it’s an alternative to
payday loans.”
They’ll also do financial literacy
classes in an effort to communicate this community about the
downside of whom they do business with.
“It’s just an extension of what
we do every day for our membership,” she said.

to The National Heart, Lung and
Blood Institute are chest pain and
discomfort, upper body discomfort and shortness of breath.
“If you have any signs of a heart
attack, don’t wait till the game
is over. Don’t try to drive to the
hospital, don’t wait and hope the
symptoms are going to go away”

Don't blame Cowboys coaching
staff for Sean Lee's knee injury

to be what led Martin to knock him

The NFLPA, which declined
official comment, is monitoring the
situation. Several officials have seen
the clip online and have spoken with
Cowboys players, but the union has
not yet made a formal request for the
team's tape of the practice. Whereas
the union could charge the team with
neglect if there were a clear, objective violation -- e.g. if OTAs ran
longer than the allotted 90 minutes
or if a team scheduled an excessive
number of sessions -- there likely
won't be much said about the team's
role in Lee's injury.
Especially because coach Jason
Garrett said he gave the players clear
instructions on practicing safely.
"We understand that we have
helmets and jerseys on, and we really emphasize players staying off
the ground and how you compete
against each other," Garrett said
after Tuesday's session. "Really get

the down, and then once it gets into
a skirmish or competitive situation
like it would be in a normal play, you
kind of back off of that. So you try to
be as productive as you can in the environment that you’re in and make it
competitive but also understand who
you’re competing against."
Several players from other teams
who viewed the clip of Lee's injury
told FOX Sports it was standard
OTA speed and contact. (The
players requested anonymity
because they didn't want to get involved in another team's business.)
Two players, both of whom have
suffered non-contact ACL injuries, believe Lee would've torn his
ACL even if Martin didn't hit him.
In other words, injuries like this
often happen in NFL offseason
sessions and Lee's injury is another
one to add to the list. It's unfortunate, particularly since Lee's been
plagued with injuries throughout
his career, and it's a blow to a
Cowboys' defense that doesn't
have a lot of depth or options on
the free-agent market. But getting
ready for September means putting in hard work in May.
And don't blame the Cowboys
for what came of it.
Sean Lee is a playmaker. He has
11 interceptions and two forced
fumbles in his four-year career
and was credited with 99 tackles in
only 11 games last season. It's Lee's
excellent instincts that put him in
position to make such plays.
On Tuesday, however, the Dallas
Cowboys linebacker's instincts were
too good.
During the team's first OTA session, he got out in front of a screen
pass and tried to plant while taking
on rookie offensive lineman Zack
Martin. Lee's right leg gave out and
then so did his left, just as Martin
was trying to engage him. Lee tore
his left ACL and is likely to miss the
entire 2014 season.
The video sparked instant analysis from some who believed there
was far too much contact for a
non-padded session in May. At first
glance, it might seem that Martin
plowed Lee and caused the injury.
But subsequent viewings show Lee's
knee gave out before Martin contacted him. In other words, it appears
to be another extremely unfortunate
season-ending injury before summer even arrives.
The NFL Players Association has
been trying to limit such injuries
with restrictions on workouts in
the offseason and even during the
regular season. Per the collective
bargaining agreement, there is to
be no "live contact" during OTAs.
Therein lies the gray area in Lee's
situation.

categoría de ascenso (Primera
División A) de la Liga Ejecutiva
de San Antonio (LESA).
Esta liga es administrada por
el exarquero Armando S. Núñez.
Los entrenadores Alberto
“Malancas” Ramírez, del cuadro
picudo, y Carlos Verdugo
(jugador) salieron a la par al darse
el último silbatazo, con marcador
empatado 2-2 goles, y tuvieron
que irse a tiros de penaltis.
Los tantos anotados por el Pique
fueron fabricados por Eduardo
(Lalo) Jinéz y Daniel González.
Por los Valedores anotó el
mismo directivo Carlos Verdugo
y Ariel Ortiz.
Alberto Ramírez designó a su

atajó para –de tan emocionante
actuación– darle el segundo punto
al Pique que concluyó su labor con
marcador global de 4-2.
En partidos empatados LESA
proporciona un punto para cada
equipo. Y en tiros de penaltis al
plantel que anote más goles se le
adjudica el segundo punto, que
de mucho les sirve para evitar
descender en sus respectivos grupos.
“Solo me tocó concentrarme en
hacer una buena defensiva contra
los disparos de los rivales. Se dio
la estrategia de atajar el par de
tiros de penaltis. No es la primer
ocasión en la que me ha tocado parar
balones contra duros oponentes”,
dijo Romero.
Por su parte, el entrenador técnico
Ramírez indicó que está próximo
a realizar un viaje a la ciudad de
San Luis Potosí, en donde ya le
están diseñando los uniformes que
vestirán sus jugadores por el resto de
la temporada. Todo depende que el
jugador y patrocinador José “Lobo”
Romero entregue su respectiva
aportación económica, como lo ha
venido haciendo tradicionalmente.
“Gracias a Sergio Romero por su
espectacular actuación atajando por

Con la victoria obtenida subimos

El manager de Broncos dijo
sentirse contento por haber logrado
su primera victoria de la temporada.
“Con éxito cerramos la primera
vuelta. Ganarle a un gran equipo
como lo es AK, para nosotros es
algo bastante bueno, ya que ello
nos motiva por seguir adelante,
tenemos pitcheo y bateo por lo que
no veo alternativas para reforzar la
alineación”, apuntó Garza.

Stirista: They’ve got mail

In this modern world of technology and stories, news can be sent
faster than ever and to thousands of
people at the same time, however,
we know little of the legwork behind
the scenes.
Volunteering at an Obama/Clinton campaign in San Francisco in
2008, the realization that there is so
much work in getting mass messages to the public was enough to
inspire young Ajay Gupta, who at
26 began his own business of getting
the word out.
Ajay and his wife, Candice, are
owners of Stirista, the only business
email directory in San Antonio.
Their goal is to help businesses,
schools, corporations and political
organizations reach their intended
audiences.
“What was surprising is how
much data is already available with
just knowing your name,” Ajay said.
“We realize that email helps small
businesses compete more effectively.
Pizza Hut can afford to send out
millions of mailers. We want to help
these small businesses get their message heard. The cost is a lot cheaper
to send emails.”
From a basement office in San
Francisco and a transition to the
Alamo City into a small office located inside Northwest Loop 410,
they are home to a major powerhouse
of information whose outreach has
expanded around the world, including Africa, Asia and Europe.
The tiny corporation is taking the
email-world by storm and spreading
messages to an epic proportion. They
have done profiles for over 200 million people worldwide.
On a very busy day, they can easily send out half a million emails,
according to Candace.
“At first this was just a side thing.
I was working full time, but we got
a few clients, and it stated growing.
I was always interested in data, and
volunteering at a lot of political
campaigns. Everyone was analyzing data and micro targeting and
messaging. It was fascinating to see
how you can target someone to get
a message towards them in a precise
way,” Ajay said.
What made Stirista boom so well?
Their out-of the-box mentality and
close bond with each of their employees is one thing, for sure. Every
employee shares the same passion
as Ajay and are a very close-knit
family. Their office is full of family
pictures, potlucks and laughter.
“We do in this office what other
corporations would take 30 others
to do in a larger place,” Ajay said.
“It’s a labor of love. I’ve got some
geniuses working with me. Email
requires a special type of person.
It requires a mix of making something attractive, but the other side
is the technology expertise needed.
Sending 100,000 emails require a
lot of technology and backhand
infrastructure to complete. We all
do that here, without having to hire
anyone else. ”
Even large companies are creating positions for email deliverability, email experts and strategists.
It’s not something they teach in
school, Ajay explained.
Next time you receive an email,
remember, there was probably a
lot of effort on somebody’s part
to get it to you.

Liga Panamericana entregó becas Los estadounidenses cada vez más
abiertos a un presidente ateo
a estudiantes independiente

La Liga Panamericana de Mujeres
en San Antonio otorgó cinco becas
a estudiantes que comenzarán y
continuarán sus estudios en agosto
de este año.
Las becas fueron otorgadas
durante el evento anual “Fiesta Olé”,
celebrado en Oak Hills Country
Club. Las becadas fueron tres
estudiantes de las preparatorias
Memorial y Kennedy que ingresarán
en agosto a universidad, y otras
dos jóvenes que continuarán sus
estudios en la Universidad de Texas
en San Antonio (UTSA, por sus
siglas en inglés).
“Estamos muy felices de poder
otorgar estas becas a estudiantes
de San Antonio que quieren salir
adelante y continuar con sus
estudios”, expresó Herlinda
Sifuentes, presidenta de la
fundación de la Liga Panamericana
en San Antonio.
La organización comenzó en
1947 como una organización sin
fines de lucro y fue creada por un
grupo de mujeres hispanas que
buscaban ayudar a su comunidad.
La liga ahora tiene una reputación
de filantropía en la ciudad, y
con pocos miembros y algunos
contribuyentes ha logrado aportar
fondos para mejorar la educación
de la ciudad.
Su evento más importante
es el Fiesta Olé, que se lleva a
cabo durante la semana de Fiesta
y tiene como propósito reunir
fondos monetarios para después
ser donados como becas para
estudiantes.
De acuerdo a Sifuentes, esta
organización no solo se ha encargado
de donar becas para universidad, ya
que también se encargan de donar
al Distrito Escolar Edgewood y a
otras organizaciones locales que
promueven la educación.
“Tenemos el Edgewood
Independent Backpack Program
en el cual, durante festividades
importantes en el año, ofrecemos
una mochila con comida a los niños
de esta área”, comentó Sifuentes.
Asimismo, la organización
donó $1 millón en el año 2000
para la construcción del Centro
Comunitario de la Catedral de San
Fernando, y concedió $250,000 a
UTSA con el fin de obtener una
afiliación y aceptar a eruditos a los
programas de la escuela.
Estos han sido algunos de
los propósitos principales de la
Liga Panamericana de Mujeres
en San Antonio; sin embargo, la
organización planea continuar
recaudando fondos para lograr
que la educación de la ciudad
mejore.

Agentes inmobiliarios latinos apoyan a
Julián Castro como secretario Vivienda
EFEUSA - La Asociación Nacional de Profesionales Hispanos en
Bienes Raíces (NAHREP) apoyó la
nominación del alcalde de San Antonio (Texas), Julián Castro, como
próximo secretario de Vivienda y
Desarrollo Urbano.
"Bajo su dirección, San Antonio
se ha convertido en una potencia
económica", dijo el presidente de
NAHREP, Jason Madiedo, en un
comunicado.
En su opinión, Castro está "sumamente calificado" para continuar el
"excelente trabajo" del secretario de
Vivienda, Shaun Donovan, y liderar
este departamento "en momentos
en que el mercado inmobiliario se
encuentra todavía en recuperación".
Por ello, la NAHREP consideró
que la nominación del regidor
texano proporcionará "beneficios
para el mercado de la vivienda y la
economía nacional".
"Los latinos son los principales
impulsores entre los nuevos compradores de vivienda, pero siguen
siendo un sector poco atendido
de la industria de la vivienda", dijo
Gary Acosta , cofundador y director
ejecutivo de NAHREP.
"Tener un secretario del Departamento de Vivienda que proviene
de la comunidad y que entiende
claramente la importancia del mercado latino es importante", señaló el
responsable de esta asociación, que
agrupa a 21,000 agentes miembros
en 48 estados.
Cifras de NAHREP señalan
que desde 2010 los hispanos han
supuesto el 56 perciento del aumento de propietarios de vivienda
en Estados Unidos y su poder de
compra se estima que será de unos
1,5 billones de dólares en 2015.
El alcalde de San Antonio,
hermano gemelo del congresista
Joaquín castro, se ha convertido
en una de las figuras emergentes
del Partido Demócrata tras ganar
las elecciones locales en 2009
y dar el discurso principal en la
Convención Nacional Demócrata
de 2012.
Desde entonces, el joven político hispano, de 39 años, está en
todas las quinielas de cara a una
posible candidatura a la vicepresidencia en las elecciones de 2016.

EFE- La religión sigue siendo
un asunto importante para los
estadounidenses a la hora de
elegir a su candidato presidencial
aunque, según un estudio del Pew
Research Center publicado, cada
vez están más abiertos a tener un
mandatario ateo.
El estudio, que analiza datos
de varias encuestas realizadas por
el centro, señala que una parte
de la población todavía se siente
incómoda con un presidente que
no cree en Dios.
El 53 por ciento señaló en un
sondeo realizado el pasado abril
que era menos probable que
apoyara a un candidato que no
cree en Dios, mientras que el 5
% señaló que probablemente no
lo apoyaría y el 41 por ciento dijo
que no era algo que le importara.
No obstante, el centro señala
que aunque cerca de la mitad de
los estadounidenses apuntaron
que era un asunto a tener en
cuenta a la hora de elegir un
candidato, la cifra es menor que
en 2007, cuando 6 de cada 10
dijeron lo mismo.
En Estados Unidos nunca
ha habido un presidente ateo,
recuerda el Pew, aunque tres de
ellos no tuvieron una afiliación
religiosa definida: Thomas
Jefferson (1801-1809), Abraham
Lincoln (1861-1865) y Andrew
Johnson (1865-1869).
Cada vez hay más
estadounidenses que no se
identifican con una religión, en
2012 uno de cada cinco permanecía
sin afiliación religiosa, según otra
encuesta de Pew, que detectó
un aumento de cinco puntos
porcentuales en cinco años.
Según los datos recogidos,
13 millones de personas
se describieron como ateos y
agnósticos (cerca de 6 por ciento
de la población estadounidense)
y cerca de 33 millones dijo no
tener una afiliación religiosa en
particular (el 14 por ciento).
El centro de investigaciones
señala que en otros países ser ateo
o agnóstico no es un obstáculo para
ganar las elecciones, mientras que
las creencias religiosas de muchos
líderes mundiales permanecen en
el ámbito privado.
Al menos una decena de jefes de
Estado o gobierno se definen como
ateos, agnósticos o no creyentes;
como el presidente de Uruguay,
José Mujica; la presidenta de
Chile, Michelle Bachelet; el
presidente de Francia, Francois
Hollande; el primer ministro de
Nueva Zelanda, John Key, y la
presidenta surcorena Park Geunhye.

Adicto a la pornografía

En este mensaje tratamos el
caso de un hombre que “descargó
su conciencia” en nuestro sitio
www.conciencia.net. Lo hizo de
manera anónima, como pedimos
que se haga; así que, a pesar de
que nunca se lo había contado
a nadie, nos autorizó a que lo
citáramos, como sigue:
“Me siento frustrado al no
poder vencer un hábito que
adquirí desde los quince años.
Tengo veintitrés, y soy adicto
a la pornografía. No la puedo
evitar.... Estoy luchando día
a día para tratar de evitar este
vergonzoso hábito”.
Este es el consejo que le dio
mi esposa:
“Estimado amigo:
“Nos alegramos de que nos
haya contado su caso como
el primer paso que da para
superar este vicio destructivo.
Para algunos, la pornografía es
un mal hábito esporádico que
hace que se sientan culpables,
avergonzados y frustrados en
las relaciones humanas. Pero
según muchos expertos, es
probable que ese mal hábito se
convierta en un vicio. Cada vez
más exposición a la pornografía
hace que el cerebro emita
sustancias químicas (llamadas
neurotransmisores) que el cuerpo
comienza a ansiar, muy parecido
a la manera en que los adictos a
las drogas ansían la droga que
les gusta. Pero al igual que con
las drogas callejeras, el cerebro
pronto emite la señal de que
necesita esas sustancias químicas
para sobrevivir. Esa señal de
parte del cerebro es el vicio.
Y cuanto más uno se entrega a
las ansias de consumir, más se
emiten las sustancias químicas,
produciendo un círculo vicioso
que nunca queda satisfecho....
“Comience a guardar un
registro de todas las veces que
se siente tentado a ver imágenes
pornográficas.... ¿Sintoniza
programas de televisión o ve
películas que contienen imágenes
tentadoras? ¿Emplea usted una
computadora en un lugar privado?
... Esas situaciones desencadenan
las ansias que siente. Examine el
registro que lleva de lo que está
haciendo, y conciba una manera de
evitar cada situación que lo induce
a ser tentado....
“Muchas veces al vicio
de la pornografía lo avivan
las emociones negativas. ¿Se
entristece o se deprime usted, y
busca consuelo en la pornografía?
¿Con frecuencia siente que ha
fracasado o ha sido rechazado?
... Esos sentimientos también
desencadenan la tentación, y
para ponerlos al descubierto
usted tiene que consultar con un
consejero profesional o un amigo
de confianza con el que pueda
hablar con toda franqueza.
“El apóstol Pablo escribió: ‘La
voluntad de Dios es que sean
santificados; que se aparten de
la inmoralidad sexual; que cada
uno aprenda a controlar su propio
cuerpo de una manera santa y
honrosa, sin dejarse llevar por
los malos deseos como hacen los
paganos, que no conocen a Dios’.
Con eso San Pablo le está dando
a usted una solución y esperanza
para superar su problema. Él
dijo que usted debe “aprender a
controlar su propio cuerpo”. Es
posible aprender a dominar su
cuerpo, pero será mucho menos
difícil si usted decide aceptar a
Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios, como
su Salvador personal. Él puede
ayudarlo de una manera integral.
Lo ama y conoce sus problemas, y
conoce su cuerpo mejor que usted
mismo. ¡Dele la oportunidad hoy
mismo!”.
Con eso termina lo que Linda,
mi esposa, recomienda en este

Doble abandono

“Quédate aquí —dijo la mujer
aparentando afecto—. Aquí vas
a estar bien. Verás correr a los
perritos y te vas a entretener”.
Luego puso una bolsa con
pañales a su lado y una nota
escrita que decía: “Me llamo John
King; padezco la enfermedad
de Alzheimer”, y desapareció,
abandonando al anciano en una
pista de carreras de perros.
La que abandonó al anciano era
Sue Gifford, mujer de cuarenta
y un años de edad. El anciano
abandonado era su propio padre,
de ochenta y dos años, víctima
de Alzheimer. Para librarse
de la carga que significa esa
enfermedad, la hija lo llevó a una
pista de carreras de perros y lo
abandonó en su silla de ruedas.
El juez la condenó a seis años de
prisión.
Este caso, que apareció en
uno de los periódicos de
Estados Unidos, conmovió a
toda la comunidad. Se sabe que
la enfermedad de Alzheimer
es dolorosa. Deja a la persona
totalmente inhabilitada. Ya no
puede valerse por sí misma. Es
un caso patético del ser humano
que ha perdido lo mejor que tiene:
la chispa de la inteligencia. Esa
es la condición de la víctima de
Alzheimer. Es una muerte en vida.
No obstante, hay una ley
universal que descansa sobre el
ser humano: “Honra a tu padre
y a tu madre, para que disfrutes
de una larga vida en la tierra
que te da el Señor tu Dios”
(Éxodo 20:12). Es el quinto
mandamiento del decálogo de
Moisés. Abandonar a los padres
ancianos por cualquier causa
que sea, y especialmente si es
solo por quitarnos de encima el
estorbo que ellos nos resultan,
es el colmo de la ingratitud y el
desprecio.
En muchos lugares hay
establecimientos excelentes
que se especializan en prestar la
atención debida a los ancianos.
Y muchos hijos, con sabiduría
y cariño, internan allí a sus
progenitores inhabilitados. Pero
no los abandonan. Los visitan.
Y los hijos se toman el tiempo
de estar con ellos, mostrando
preocupación y ternura.
Sin embargo, cuando los hijos
no tienen la facilidad de internar
a sus padres en lugares como
esos, tienen que ponerse en
juego otros recursos. En tales
casos hace falta un amor muy
especial y un cariño único.
El mandamiento de honrar a
nuestros padres viene de Dios.
También vienen de Dios, para
quien los desee, la inspiración,
la paciencia y la determinación
de proceder conforme a los
eternos y justos mandamientos
divinos. Honremos a nuestro
padre y a nuestra madre. Algún
día seremos nosotros los que
recibamos esa honra.

Three men ordained to
priesthood for archdiocese
Archbishop Gustavo GarcíaSiller, MSpS, ordained three young
men into priesthood for the archdiocese at Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Church in Selma May 17. These
men received their priestly training from Assumption Seminary.
Those being ordained were Father
Scott Janysek, Father Servando
Guerrero Ponce and Father Victor Valdez.
Father Janysek is from Panna
Maria and is a graduate of Karnes
City High School. He holds a
bachelor’s degree in philosophy
from St. Mary’s University and
completed his theological studies
at Oblate School of Theology. He
is a hunting and fishing enthusiast.
Father Guerrero Ponce was
born and raised in San Luís, Potosí, México. He has six brothers
and four sisters, and his family
still resides in México. He began
his philosophy studies at the seminary level in Monterrey, México.
After completing the program he
took some time away from the
seminary and studied Computer
Design Systems, and was hired
as supervisor of a local electronics
company.
In 2008, he was invited to join
the Archdiocese of San Antonio
to finish his theological studies at
Oblate School of Theology, where
he earned his master’s degree this
spring. He has completed pastoral
assignments at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Helotes and Our Lady
of Good Counsel in San Antonio.
Father Valdez was born in Los
Angeles and completed his high
school and college studies in that
state. Prior to entering Assumption
Seminary, he was in the pharmacy
profession for 15 years. He moved to
Texas in 1995. He entered Assumption Seminary in 2007 and completed his Master of Divinity Degree
at Oblate School of Theology.
In a break with recent tradition,
Archbishop Gustavo requested the
ordination rite to be held in the parishes of the archdiocese as a way of
getting parish communities involved
and furthering the vocational call to
the priesthood and religious life. In
the past, these ceremonies were held
at San Fernando Cathedral.
“This is a day of great joy for
the church of San Antonio!” the
archbishop said in his homily. “My
brothers, to you, and through you,
the Lord will continue to fulfill his
promise to be a Good Shepherd, one
who knows his people and cares
for them.
The prelate concluded by saying,
“My brothers, may Our Lady, the
‘Star of the New Evangelization,’
embrace you with her maternal care
and intercede with God so that you
will be faithful, good priests in imitation of the Good Shepherd. Today,
we also pray in a special way for
you: ¡Ven, Holy Spirit, Ven! ¡Ven,
Holy Spirit, Ven!”
After the remarks from Archbishop Gustavo, the three men rose
and the prelate questioned them
during the Promise of the Elect as
part of the rite of ordination. Each
of the men knelt before him and
placed their hands between his, to
whom they promised obedience.
Following the litany of supplication, the elect stood and walked
to the archbishop, again kneeling
before him. The archbishop placed
his hands on the head of each of
them, and after this, all priests
wearing stoles came and did the
same.
With the elect kneeling before
him, Archbishop Gustavo, with
hands outstretched, pronounced
the prayer of ordination. Afterwards, the newly ordained
received their stole and chasuble.
Then the archbishop anointed with
holy chrism the psalms of each
new priest as they knelt before
him.
Next, the faithful presented a
paten holding bread and a chalice containing the wine mixed
with water for the celebration of
the Mass. Archbishop Gustavo
presented it to each of the newly
ordained.
The rite concluded with the
archbishop giving each of the
newly ordained a fraternal embrace. Likewise, all priests present
did the same to each of the newly
ordained.
Prior to the recessional, Archbishop Gustavo gave a special
blessing to the newly ordained,
and they each gave his a priestly
blessing.
Father Janysek has been assigned as parochial vicar of St.
Mary Church in Fredericksburg
and Father Valdez has been assigned as parochial vicar of St. Anthony Mary Claret Church in San
Antonio. Father Guerrero Ponce
will be assigned at a later date.
This May, nine men from Assumption Seminary will be ordained to the priesthood — three
from San Antonio; two from the
Diocese of Nashville; and one each
from the dioceses of Brownsville;
Laredo; San Bernardino, Calif.;
and Salt Lake City.

Memorial Day en honor de la generación 1967

La comunidad de Edgewood
se reunió como una familia para
celebrar Memorial Day (Día de los
Caídos) y en particular honrar la
memoria de los 54 estudiantes de
la generación 1967 que se enlistaron en las fuerzas armadas para
combatir en la guerra de Vietnam,
contienda en la que entregaron su
vida para beneficio de todos.
El acto tuvo lugar el lunes 26 de
mayo en el auditorio de Kennedy
High School bajo la dirección del
Dr. José A. Cervantes, superintendente de Edgewood Independent
School District, entidad escolar
que aportó el mayor número de
jóvenes soldados al ejército para
combatir en Vietnam, más que
ningún otro distrito escolar en
todo el país.
La parte solemne de la ceremonia ocurrió cuando Terry Guerrero,
de Memorial High School, leyó,
pausadamente, la lista con los
nombres de los caídos, mientras
sus familiares, amigos o dirigentes
de la comunidad pasaban al frente
a depositar flores frente a las fotografías de quienes perecieron en el
frente de batalla.
En esta ocasión fue invitado
como orador el teniente coronel
Neil I. Nelson, quien, al reconocer
el sacrificio de los jóvenes estudiantes, hizo referencia a lazos
de hermandad que existen entre
los miembros de las unidades del
ejército.
Nelson relató la historia de
un combatiente de nacionalidad
mexicana que pereció en el frente,
y a quien su familia quería dar sepultura en territorio mexicano con
los honores acostumbrados en el
ejército norteamericano, lo cual no
era permitido por las autoridades.
El teniente coronel Nelson
relató que, como se trataba de un
hermano de armas, se hicieron los
arreglos necesarios y finalmente
fue permitido su funeral con los
honores correspondientes. Esto lo
hizo como referencia para ilustrar
los estrechos lazos entre los combatientes, al margen de factores
políticos.
En esta ceremonia, el grupo

integrados por veteranos del Army
(Generación Edgewood 1967)
entregaron becas para estudios
superiores a los alumnos Aerial
Tempesh Bollin y Jalen Matthew
Mojica de John F. Kennedy High
School. También a Zayra S. Rico
e Ileana Martínez de Memorial
High School.

Hawaiian Grill has joined the fray
of fast food restaurants in town.
This iconic eatery is famous
around the world.
With over 200 locations worldwide, it is a loved and cherished
place for many. In Texas, only the
people of Plano have experienced
this eatery. Prior to taking home
base on 1302 Austin Highway
and Vandiver Street, Plano was
the only other location in the Lone
Star State.
L&L Hawaiian Grill is open
from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days
a week.
What they feature is a medley of
Hawaiian comfort foods. Ramen
(Saimin), shrimp, ribs, katsu and
pulled pork bowl are among some
of the entrees. Their unique menu
brings something never before
seen in San Antonio.

disgust and discrediting my validity on food, try it for yourself. A
slice of hot spam lies atop a large
ball of rice, delicately wrapped

or not – rather satisfying. Instead of
shying away from the meat, I may
be inclined to prepare it in this way
from now on.
The joint is a small place and
seats about 35, however because
it’s new; the place was overflowing with people earlier this week.
The service at L&L was very
friendly, and I was greeted with a
friendly “Aloha!” upon entering
and leaving. The staff was very
helpful helping select cuisine and
didn’t hesitate to refill drinks or
check up on you.
This place is definitely worth the
hype, and should be visited at least
once, just to say you tried the Ramen Burger, if not anything else.

“Dr.Salazar”: The real face behind Hannibal Lecter

Season 2 of Hannibal just happened. It’s left everyone with their
jaws on the floor (from awe, not
surgical removal) in one of the most
daring turns in television history.
The NBC favorite has pushed the
limits of what it means to be a crime
drama. It has beautifully separated
itself from the pack by offering
fantastic visuals, well developed
characters and an amazing storyline.
The basis of the story, of course,
comes from the quadrilogy of
Thomas Harris books that has since
become the iconic quadrilogy of
films. The driving and most seductive side of the story has always been
Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter,
a brilliant and elegant psychopath
who eats people and has disgust for
the rude.
Anthony Hopkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Brian Cox and Gaspard Ulliel have all lent their own personal
take on the character throughout
the Hannibal franchise, but where
did Harris come up with Dr. Lecter?
Like several other characters from
the world of horror including Leatherface and Norman Bates, Hannibal
has some personality and appetite
habits that are borrowed from the
notorious Ed Gein.
Gein was made infamous from
his time spent dabbling in making
furniture out of bits and bones that
he would collect from graveyards.
Although he did have quite the
knack for crafts, he was a rubbish
home decorator and the whole murder thing didn’t help him out either.
Gein had begun to fashion a skin
suit out of a woman’s body, which
Harris later borrowed to give his
“Silence of the Lambs”, character
Jame Gumb a deeper dimension.
It wasn’t until Harris released
the 25th anniversary edition of his
novel “Silence of the Lambs” that
he revealed his true inspiration for
Hannibal was a person named “Dr.
Salazar.”
The name Salazar turned out to
be a pseudonym for Balli Trevino
a young medical intern who had slit
his lover’s throat cut him into pieces,
and placed him in small box to be
disposed of as medical waste. Police
at the time tried to connect Trevino
to other murders and disappearances
in the area from a killer the media
had dubbed “The Werewolf of
Nuevo Leon”, but were unsuccessful due to lack of evidence.
When Harris was still a 23-yearold journalist, he went to a prison
in Monterrey, Mexico to interview
Dykes Askew Simmons, a man
accused of murdering three people.
While Harris was on-site, he learned
of a doctor who had saved Simmons
life when he was shot during an attempted prison break.
Harris managed to get a one-onone with Trevino, a calm and polite
man who didn’t speak a word of his
crime during the entirety of the interview. However, Trevino did begin
questioning Harris about the appearance of Simmons’ disfigured face
and also started asking questions
about Simmons murder victims. It
wasn’t until Harris was thanking the
Warden for his cooperation that he
learned that Trevino was a murderer.
In his 25th anniversary Silence
of the Lambs” edition Harris wrote
“It was not Dr. Salazar, but because
of Dr. Salazar, I could recognize his
colleague and fellow practitioner
Hannibal Lecter.”

Hannibal Lecter. The calm and
nonchalant demeanor that Trevino
exuded was enough to give life to
the horror icon we all know and
love today.
Although Trevino was sentenced
to death,i he managed to have his
sentence commuted and spent the
rest of his life giving medical assistance to the elderly and the poor.
Trevino passed away in 2009 from
prostate cancer.
The horror fan in me has a ton
of conspiracy theories surrounding Trevino. If he was indeed like
the Hannibal Harris wrote about.
Maybe, he was treating old people
as a way to continue his murders
while covering it up with the alibi of
natural causes. Maybe, he falsified
his death being that its hard to get
a solid fact about rather he died in
2009 or 2010. Maybe, the real life
Hannibal is still out there.
Or, maybe, (and most likely) I
just have an overactive imagination
and Trevino was just a nice guy
who made a mistake early in life
and spent the rest of his life trying
to make up for it.

Con motivo del próximo lanzamiento del DVD Box de la serie,
el reparto original de “Wonder
Years” (Los años maravillosos) se
reunió esta semana para filmar los
extras que acompañaran a la serie
en el paquete.
Y a juzgar por las múltiples
selfies que se tomaron, no han
cambiado mucho a través de los
años, solo han crecido más.
Fred Savage (Kevin), Danica
McKellar (Winnie), Jason Harvey
(Wayne Arnold), Josh Saviano (Paul
Pfeiffer), Olivia D’Abo (Karen
Arnold), Dan Lauria (Jack Arnold),
and Alley Mills (Norma Arnold) se
reunieron para ser entrevistados,
tomarse selfies y fotos profesionales en preparación para el paquete
de DVDs.
Como un momento nostálgico es
que múltiples medios catalogaron
esta reunión, y fue tanto que en una
de las fotos principales el grupo se
sentó en la réplica de una cocina
típica de finales de los años 80 y

“The Wonder Years” (Los Años

últimos años Fred Savage (Kevin)
se dedicó más a dirigir show como
“2 Broke Girls”, “Happy Endings”
y “Modern Family”; sin embargo,
en 1987 protagonizó otra película
de fantasía que ya es un clásico:
“The Princess Bride”.
Por su parte, Danica McKellar
(Winnie Cooper) se le ha visto
más recientemente como participante en el show “Dancing with
the Stars”.

¡Me muero sin mi celular!

¿Podrías vivir sin tu celular?
Tal vez. Piensas. ¡Claro que
no! No sabemos despegarnos
de los aparatos electrónicos. La
mayoría envía textos, tweets y
chequea su correo durante una
cita amorosa, en el cine o en el
baño. Un estudio conducido por
una compañía de comunicación
británica demostró que el 25 por
ciento de las personas contestan
su teléfono en medio de la intimidad. Y hay muchos que les
dolería más perder su celular que
una amistad.
Realmente los tiempos han
cambiado. No hace mucho salíamos a socializar para conocer
amigos y encontrar pareja, hoy
pedimos los amigos en Facebook
y buscamos el amor por Internet.
Cuando yo era pequeña, los
niños ansiaban salir a la calle
para jugar pelota; hoy prefieren
enclaustrarse dentro de la casa
con sus juegos de video que no
requieren sudar ni una gota.
La tecnología nos ha dominado
de tal forma que hemos perdido
la habilidad de retener información. Algo tan simple como
recordar un número de teléfono,
una dirección o multiplicar se nos
dificulta porque ahora dependemos de un celular.
Te recuerdo que nuestro cerebro es la computadora más maravillosa que poseemos.
El mundo siempre ha evolucionado desde su principio y lo
seguirá haciendo. Lo irónico es
que aquellos que han marcado la
historia como Jesucristo, Gandhi,
Julio César, Miguel de Cervantes, Mozart o Miguel Ángel,
ninguno tenía acceso a una com-
putadora, dependían del uso de
su cerebro y su pasión para crear.
Es cierto que la tecnología nos
ayuda grandemente, pero no es
indispensable. Si desapareciera
en este momento, nos adaptaríamos y seguiríamos viviendo.
Probablemente seríamos más
creativos y apreciaríamos más
la naturaleza y la unión familiar.
Si el uso excesivo de la computadora, celular u otros aparatos electrónicos ha afectado tu
relación amorosa o trabajo, o
eres de los que no puedes pasar
más de 15 minutos sin entrar a
las redes sociales, sin duda, la
tecnología te arropó.
Hoy día es casi imposible
desprendernos de la tecnología,
pero aun así podemos escoger
una vida que no impida desarrollar nuestro intelecto, habilidades
creativas y amor hacia los demás.
Siempre puedes poner límites y
decidir cómo quiere encaminar
su vida. Recuerda eres dueño de
tu alma y capitán de tu destino.

Review: “The Wolf Among Us:
In Sheep’s Clothing”

The fourth installment of
Telltale Game’s “The Wolf
Among Us: In Sheep’s Clothing” is another decision-making-based, tough as nails entry
into the noir inspired series.
I don’t want to give anything
away from what occurs in the
first three episodes. But, what it
basically comes down to is that
your character Bigby is looking
for the person who is responsible for a couple of murders
in Fabletown.
After being wounded and
left for dead by Bloody Mary,
Bigby awakens with a doctor
removing fragments of silver
bullets from his torso. His
forearm is completely broken in
two, which leads to one of the
most cringe worthy moments
from the series where Bigby is
forced to set the bone himself
using his only good hand.
Once he is well enough to get
on his feet he hits the streets
again looking for the kingpin
known as The Crooked Man,
who has a hand behind all the
events that have transpired so
far.
With both the identity and
location of The Crooked Man
being unknown the majority of
this episode is spent shaking
things to see what comes loose.
Clues come from both Beauty
and Beast who have gone on
long enough with one too many
secrets and a heart racing run
in and brawl with the Jersey
Devil.
Plenty of great moments
in this episode walk us down
an uneasy path with a only
more darkness ahead. Telltale
Games continues to deliver
while giving us enough existential quandary and Fable intrigue
to shake a glass slipper at.
With only one more episode
in the Fable saga left and so
many unanswered questions,
the guys over at Telltale Games
have a large responsibility to
give fans a satisfying end.
In the meantime, Fable fans
can try playing through again
on different save files. Each
choice you make has consequences and can lead to several
different conclusions. Try different approaches to see how it
all works out.

“World War Z” sequel
EFE - Briton Steven Knight
has agreed to write the screenplay for the follow-up to the
summer 2013 blockbuster
“World War Z,” director Juan
Antonio Bayona said Thursday.
“Happy to announce: Steven
Knight writes the sequel to
World War Z,” the Spanish filmmaker wrote on Twitter.
Knight’s screenwriting credits
include David Cronenberg’s
“Eastern Promises” and “Dirty
Pretty Things,” by director Stephen Frears.
Bayona is currently busy with
preproduction for “A Monster
Calls,” featuring Liam Neeson
and Felicity Jones, which is
scheduled for release in 2016.

arremetieron contra un artículo de
The Washington Post que sugería
que sus películas contribuyen a que

el viernes pasado en California.
La noche del día 23, el joven
Elliot Rodger asesinó a cuchilladas
a tres personas y mató a disparos a
otras tres antes de quitarse la vida de
un tiro en la localidad universitaria
de Isla Vista, en el condado de Santa
Bárbara, en lo que fue un acto premeditado como una venganza por
sentirse despreciado.
“Tengo 22 años y todavía soy
virgen”, dijo el asesino en un vídeo
que colgó en YouTube.
La crítica de cine Ann Hornaday,
de The Washington Post, aseguró

de un vida que debería estar llena
de sexo y placer?”, se preguntó la
autora.
Hornaday identificó también explícitamente las comedias de Judd
Apatow como parte del problema
por hacer creer a los espectadores
que adolescentes de aspecto descuidado y problemas con la Ley acaban
consiguiendo a la chica, unos “finales felices” que “constantemente
eluden” al público en su día a día.
“Las películas puede que no reflejen la realidad, pero condicionan

“Ted” (and especially “Family
Guy”) was a big hit with comedy
lovers. He plugged in all the equations to create an entertaining and
hilarious movie.
With his follow up feature “A
Million Ways to Die in the West”
MacFarlane boldly steps into the
boots of the lead in his western
comedy, where he plays Albert,
a poor sheep herder who loses
his girlfriend Louise (Amanda
Seyfried) to a very mustached and
cocky Foy (Neil Patrick Harris).
Albert sees daily how hard it is
to stay alive in a real life version
of “The Oregon Trail” video game
where anything could kill from
dysentery to runaway bulls or even
a two-ton block of falling ice. Right
when Albert is preparing to leave
the dangerous Wild West before
it claims his life, Anna (Charl-
ize Theron) rides into town. She
becomes smitten with Albert and
convinces him not to leave just yet.
The romance could have easily
lead somewhere if it wasn’t for
the fact Anna is married to Clench
Leatherwood (Liam Neeson), the
most dangerous gunman in the
West. He plans on putting a bullet
in any rootin’-tootin’ varmint that
touches his wife.
The absurdity is very much what
fans have come to expect from
Macfarlane. Lots of crude humor
that results in some hilarious and off
the wall moments. The best of these
laughs comes from MacFarlane’s
reverence when it comes to geek
pop culture.
There are just as many laughs in
this film as there are ways to die
in the West. However, this is one
of those films that is ruined if you
followed the trailers.
For example, the red band trailer
that was released earlier this year.
It literally had about 80 percent of
the jokes preloaded and manages
to spoil a large number of wouldhave-been-funny moments in the
film.
The runtime is also another
killer clocking in at 116 minutes. A
comedy like this one never should
exceed the hour-and-a-half mark.
The gags begin to feel played out
toward the last thirty minutes. The
cute and playful chemistry that
MacFarlane and Theron create in
the opening act becomes tired and
worn toward the end.
Bad marketing and long runtime
aside, “A Million Ways to Die in
the West” is at its best an homage
to Mel Brook’s “Blazing Saddles”
with a little more crude humor
thrown into the mix. MacFarlane
is a movie lover and child of the
80s so his work always tends to reflect that, right down to a highlight
“Back to the Future III” moment.
“A Million Ways to Die in the
West” is fun and has some pretty
funny moments in it. However, the
film walks too far down a path, then
realizes it has to walk all the way
back home. At that point it’s too late
and not even a well-placed fart joke
can bring even the biggest “Family
Guy” fans back around.

vendrá de otras partes del
país y además de México a
visitarme y a estar conmigo
durante este momento tan

norte del país) y mi esposo

El problema es que mi esposo
siempre es muy pacífico y no
hace problema, pero esta vez ya
me advirtió que no lo quiere ver
y que si lo llega a ver, tendrá
que ser en un ambiente diluido
en donde haya mucha gente.
Por un lado lo entiendo pero
por otro lado me gustaría hablar
con mi papá y decirle que mi
esposo está muy decepcionado
y molesto con él, pero sé que
si hago eso mi padre se va a
enojar más y será mucho menos
mi posibilidad de que las cosas
mejoren.
El punto aquí es que yo sé
que mi papá jamás le va a pedir
perdón a mi esposo, y al mismo
tiempo mi esposo ya no se va a
dejar y no quiere verlo cuando
venga.
Necesito que me digas qué
debo hacer para mejorar esta
situación, que lo único que me
causa es estrés y es lo menos
que necesito en este momento.
Querida esposa desesperada:
Tener a tu padre y a tu esposo
en un pleito de este tipo debe de
ser muy difícil para ti, pues tu
amas a los dos y lo único que
buscas es que las cosas sean lo
más pacíficas y sin tanto problema. Desafortunadamente,
tú misma me has dicho que tu
padre es una persona muy orgullosa que jamás pediría perdón
y tu esposo ya no permitirá que
tu padre le falte al respeto.
Lo que debes hacer es hablar
con tu esposo y pedirle de favor que ponga su mejor cara
durante estos días, a fin de
cuentas tu papá no vive aquí
y durante un tiempo no tendrá
que preocuparse de este tema.
Por otro lado, debes hablar
con tu padre y decirle cómo te
sientes y de qué manera te está
afectando todo esto. Debes de
decirle cómo se siente tu esposo y la posición en la que te
encuentras.
Explícales a los dos lo difícil
que esta situación es para ti, y
que a pesar de lo mucho que los
amas no estás dispuesta a sufrir
de estrés durante el nacimiento
de tu bebé.
Si no entienden o no acceden,
entonces tú deberás tomar la
decisión de apoyar a tu pareja
o a tu padre, dependiendo de
cómo te sientas al respecto.
No olvides recordarles la
importancia del respeto y más
si es entre familia, pues de eso
dependerá que tus hijos crezcan
felices y sin ser afectados por
esta situación.
