NIH study offer new hope for premature births

The fight to treat premature
births just got a strong ally in
the National Institute of Health
(NIH) and San Antonio is at the
center of the treatment options.
For children born with only
24 to 28 weeks of gestation, well
short of the usual 40 weeks, a new
study aims to increase the odds of
survival with the assistance of the
increased levels of erythropoietin
(Epo).
“The NICU is a team sport,”
said Dr. Alexander Kenton, neo
natologist and medical director of
the neonatal intensive care unit
(NICU) at Methodist Children’s
Hospital. “We want to take the
best from academic and private
practice to ultimately come up
with the best care. We provide
[neonatal] care that grew to a net
work of care across the country.
That resulted in the top percentile
outcomes in [preterm] births.”
The study size will include
940 premature babies in 16 study
locations across the country,
including Methodist Children’s
Hospital in San Antonio. Method
ist has the singular honor of being
the only hospital in Texas taking
part in the NIH study.
With test subjects having to
qualify for participation using
stringent guidelines, those who
do take part will be assessed at
two years old if the increased
levels Epo has led increased
weight gain and achieving de
velopmental milestones relative
to their age.
“Methodist takes care of [pre
term] babies like these as far
away from the Valley and San
Angelo. 140 to 150 babies each
year are less than 100 grams, so
all these facts are to say we make
an impact on families in Texas,”
continued Dr. Kenton.
Results from local families
taking part in the study will have
their results analyzed in the par
ent site in Seattle, Washington.
While the use of Epo is still
considered experimental, early
use of it in preterm babies has
already yielded promising results
leading doctors across the country
attempt to securer funding for
such a study.

humor para adultos mayores

Considerando que el equilibrio
emocional es de vital importan
cia para el bienestar integral de
la persona, y que ayuda a sobre
llevar las enfermedades y com
plicaciones físicas de la tercera
edad, los residentes de Palacio del
Sol asistieron a un seminario para
analizar mejor su estado de ánimo
y de sus familiares cercanos, que
en la mayoría de los casos son sus
esposos.
Con el tema “Plática sobre
el Buen Humor”, el doctor Juan
Carlos Uziar, neurólogo psiquiatra
que ejerce en el hospital CHRIS
TUS Santa Rosa, dictó una ame
na conferencia a residentes del
complejo habitacional referido,
que fue fundado por Mexican
American Unity Council y cuyos
residentes reciben subvención de
Housing Authority.
Uno de los primeros temas
sobre la condición mental de las
personas mayores es el que sus
familiares más cercanos, princi
palmente los hijos, estén alertas
de los síntomas de una patología,
que se refleja en los cambios en
el carácter y comportamiento
de ellos. Y una vez identificado
el problema consultarlo con el
médico.
Coincidió con la opinión de
algunos de los participantes a
este seminario en que el apoyo
a la fe religiosa de cada persona
es importante en el tratamiento
de las enfermedades y la inesta
bilidad emocional que llevan a la
depresión.
En cuanto a la depresión, el
doctor Uziar recomendó a quienes
tengan síntomas de cambio de
carácter a que busquen la unidad
y el apoyo de su familia o que se
unan a grupos de terapia colectiva;
pues la ayuda en ambos casos es
benéfica para el manejo de la irri
tabilidad y los lapsos depresivos.
Por ejemplo de los beneficios
que se obtienen en grupos de
terapia colectiva señaló el éxito
demostrado por los grupos de
Alcohólicos Anónimos.
El Dr. Uziar enfatizó en que
la ayuda y comprensión por parte
de los hijos y de la familia son
de gran beneficio para quienes
sufren de depresión, puesto que
las depresiones usualmente son
la consecuencia del dolor físico
que aqueja a personas de edad
avanzada y que afectan directa
mente a las funciones del cerebro,
que –como cualquier otro órgano
vital– está expuesto al deterioro
natural de la edad.

Arranca construcción de hotel de
$35 millones en Brooks City Base

Por primera vez, el sur de San
Antonio tendrá un hotel de prime
ra clase con servicio completo.
El miércoles por la mañana
inicio la construcción del hotel
Embassy Suites por Hilton en
la intersección de South New
Braunfels Avenue y Southeast
Military Drive, en la zona Brooks
City Base.
El proyecto de $35 millones
contará con 156 suites de dos
recámaras, un restaurante, un
salón de banquete para 500 per
sonas, un salón de baile de 8,000
pies cuadrados y espacio para una
recepción al aire libre.
Además, el hotel ofrecerá
salones de conferencia, servicio
de internet Wifi, un centro de
gimnasia, una piscina y jacuzzi,

“Este es un acontecimiento
muy importante para nosotros
porque ahora la gente va a poder
venir aquí al sur de la ciudad,
quedarse y disfrutar de todo lo
que ofrecemos aquí”, expresó
Pelaez-Prada.
La alcaldesa de San Antonio
Ivy Taylor aplaudió al proyecto
y comentó que es el momento
perfecto para construir el hotel
ya que el 300 aniversario de
la ciudad de San Antonio se
aproxima y cuatro de las misio
nes que recientemente fueron
reconocidas como patrimonio
de la humidad se encuentran en
el sur de la ciudad.
“Estoy muy emocionada de es
tar aquí el día de hoy”, comentó la
alcaldesa. “Es un gran día para la
ciudad, y un gran día para Brooks
City Base y un gran día para el
sur de San Antonio”.
Además, la alcaldesa añadió
que el proyecto impulsará nuevas
oportunidades económicas, ya
que se necesitará trabajo manual
para construir el hotel.
Asimismo, Pelaez-Prada des
tacó que tendrá un impacto
enorme en la economía de San
Antonio debido a los gastos aso
ciados con el turismo.
“El turismo es una de las in
dustrias más importantes de la
comunidad y vamos a ser parte
de esa contribución económica,
vamos a ver mucho de ese dinero
que la gente usa para comprar
cositas en la tiendas, visitan
restaurantes, toda esa actividad

el presidente de
México, Enrique Peña Nieto no
ha llamado por teléfono al ex
presidente de Colombia, César
Gaviria.
A Gaviria se le escapó de la
cárcel el narcotraficante más
poderoso del mundo – Pablo
Escobar – en 1992, pero 13
meses después lo acorraló y lo
mató. Gaviria podría ayudar a
recapturar al Chapo. Pero nadie
del gobierno mexicano le ha
llamado.
No sé si es una cuestión de
orgullo, de tonto nacionalismo
u otra señal más de incompe
tencia y parálisis. Pero México
necesita todo tipo de ayuda. El
gobierno mexicano ha demos
trado, una y otra vez, que solo
no puede.
Yo sí llamé al expresidente
Gaviria y me explicó qué haría
él para agarrar al Chapo. Estos
son los puntos más interesantes
de nuestra conversación.
La escapatoria
Hay muchas diferencias entre
Escobar y el Chapo. Escobar
se entregó a la justicia en 1991
(para evitar que lo extraditaran
a Estados Unidos) mientras que
el Chapo sí fue capturado en
un apartamento de Mazatlán.
Pero los dos se escaparon por
la corrupción en Colombia y en
México.
Pusimos una brigada entera
del ejército a rodear la cárcel,
me dijo el expresidente Gaviria,
y el día (21 de julio de 1992) que
lo tratamos de mover –porque
seguía delinquiendo– por un
fenómeno de corrupción, de
intimidación y de vacilaciones
de autoridades militares, salió
caminando entre los soldados.
Lo que uno aprende es que la
capacidad de corrupción e in
timidación de estas personas es
enorme.”
Castigo a los responsables
de la fuga
Hubo unas sanciones. Hubo
funcionarios públicos que sa
lieron del gobierno por lo que
ocurrió, recordó Gaviria. En
Colombia dos ministros y dos
altos mandos del ejército fueron
destituidos por la fuga de Pablo
Escobar. Además, hubo un
juicio en el Congreso.
En México, en cambio, hay
tres chivos expiatorios por la
fuga del Chapo y todos los fun
cionarios importantes siguen en
sus puestos.
Enviar el mensaje correcto
El expresidente Gaviria tenía
un viaje a Madrid el mismo día
que Escobar se escapó. Pero no
fue. Yo cancelé mi viaje, es
tábamos en el proceso (de buscar
a Escobar) y entonces no salí,
me dijo. Había que demostrarle
a Colombia y al mundo que este
era un asunto prioritario.
El presidente de México, en
cambio, no canceló ni acortó
una gira a Francia tras la fuga
del Chapo. El mensaje que
envió fue claro: prefirió París
a regresar a México a buscar
al Chapo.
Crear un bloque de búsqueda
Tienen que crear un grupo –
en el caso de México, de armada
y ejército– y dedicarlos exclusi
vamente a eso; a perseguirlo y a
buscarlo de manera sistemática,
dijo Gaviria. Tienen que dedi
carlos exclusivamente a eso.
No pueden ser los organismos
de la seguridad del estado. No,
eso necesita un grupo especiali
zado. Y yo no tengo duda de
que México lo puede lograr...
Nosotros nombramos y escogi
mos un bloque de búsqueda del
ejército y policía (y) desman
telamos al cartel de Medellín.”
Vivo o muerto
¿Es cierto que usted dijo en
una reunión que el objetivo no
era capturar vivo a Pablo Esco
bar?, le pregunté. No, no, no,
me corrigió. Lo que había era la
decisión de que, cualquiera que
fuera el nivel de resistencia, si
no lo capturaban lo iban a matar.
Él no se iba a dejar capturar tam
poco. Y el bloque de búsqueda
no era un grupo pequeño, era un
grupo grande, no fue una cosa
accidental. Fue un grupo que
trabajó año y medio a perseguir
a Escobar.”
Gastar mucho más en seguridad
A mí me preocupa mucho
que México no ha tomado su
tema de seguridad con la se
riedad con que lo ha tomado
Colombia, me dijo. Colombia
es un país que gasta un 6% de
su producto (interno bruto PIB)
en seguridad. Eso es parecido
a Estados Unidos o un poco
más. Colombia tiene muchos
instrumentos para luchar contra
el narcotráfico. México no tiene
instrumentos especiales... Está
llegando la hora de que tengan
una política más agresiva y de
que inviertan mucho más en
seguridad. México –creo– no
gasta ni el 1.5% (de su PIB)
en seguridad. O sea, Colombia
gasta cuatro veces lo que gasta
México. Mientras eso sea así, el
problema de seguridad no lo van
a resolver.”
Es imperdonable que se le
haya escapado el Chapo al
presidente Peña Nieto. Pero
más grave aún es que todo siga
igual en México después de la
fuga. No hay cambios dentro
del gobierno, los carteles siguen
desafiando al estado y nadie
puede garantizarle la vida a los
mexicanos.
Gaviria lo sabe y terminó así
la conversación: La obligación
del presidente de México no
es tanto la de parar las drogas
como la de ganar seguridad para
el país.”

Just a Thought: Does lightning strikes twice?
There is
an old ad
age that says,
“lightning
doesn’t strike
twice in the
same place or
the same per

personal ex
perience I can say I wholeheart
edly disagree.
Lighting struck me, so to
speak, 38 years apart plus one
week. Some might even call it
“déjà vu” all over again. Well, I
can attest to an incident happen
ing to me, August 11, 1970 in
Phu Bai, Vietnam that literally
occurred again August 15, 2008
in San Antonio. The similarities
were remarkable.
Both incidents included at
least one two & a half ton truck
and me as a major player in the
two similar accidents involving
them. During the second oc
currence, I momentarily expe
rienced a flashback to my first
encounter with the two & a half
ton truck driven by our adversar
ies, the Viet Cong.
I was riding in the passenger
seat armed with my M-16 as
my buddy drove our two and a
half ton truck back to Phu Bai
from Hue, the capitol city of the
northern area of South Vietnam.
We were transporting nationals
to work on our compound that
included “hootch” maids, mess
hall workers and various other
jobs. Our eight man huts were
affectionately dubbed “hootchs.”
The second accident involved
a driver from a construction
company who was waiting for
a green light at the intersection
of Babcock & Wilson to turn
right. I had just almost cleared
the intersection when the driver
of the truck abruptly turned into
me thus spinning my car around
forcing me to the curb with on
coming traffic coming quickly
toward me. My adrenalin soared
as I thought I would survive
the truck hit but would die by
multiple cars crashing into me
as an encore.
Crawling out of my car, which
was later declared totalled, I
made my way to the curb after
staggering around and looking
at what was left of my vehicle.
I will admit I was somewhat
disoriented at the time. When I
arrived at the hospital emergency
room they checked me out, took
some tests and discharged me
with a headache and a few bruis
es. In my stupor as I crawled out
of my car I grabbed my camera
which was always with me and
actually took photos of what was
left of my car and the immediate
surroundings. I do remember
muttering, “Thank you Jesus for
allowing me to live.”
In my first accident I was
thrown forward into the wind
shield and hit my forehead on
the medal windshield wiper.
Fortunately it threw me up and
not straightforward. That was a
blessing for it would have done
severe damage to my face.
Having survived being hit by
one truck got my attention. Sur
viving two hits by a two & a half
ton truck, I consider myself very
blessed. I remember also saying
out loud to the Lord in 2008, “If
you are trying to get my attention
and tell me something, could you
use some other less painful way
to do it?”
I figure if He decides to hit
me again with a two & a half
ton truck 38 years from the 2008
incident I will be a hundred year
old. I figure that will be His way
in welcoming me home!

Camino a la racialización y al racismo

En alguna oportunidad mani
festé que al pasado de Estados
Unidos se puede conceptua
lizarla como la historia del
racismo. Aunque dura y poco
atractiva, es una caracterización
precisa, especialmente hoy
cuando las bases del Partido
Republicano claman a gritos el
regreso de la racialización, el
separatismo y la segregación.
No es una exageración com
parar a muchos republicanos
que apoyan la candidatura de
Donald Trump con aquellas
bases que precedieron al régi
men de Adolfo Hitler o aque
llas que apoyaron al régimen
dictatorial de Augusto Pinochet
en Chile o al que en su mo
mento hicieron todo lo posible
la llegada de Vladimir Putin
en Rusia. Todos ellos tienen
mucho parecido.
En base a los estudios del
sociólogo alemán Teodoro
Adorno se puede inferir que
las poblaciones que alentaron
y aclamaron la llegada de estos
tres líderes tenían una “perso
nalidad autoritaria”. Los que
apoyan a Trump también sufren
de este mal social.
Este tipo de personalidad no
es inherente a las personas; es
decir, no nacen con caracterís
ticas autoritarias sino que la
adquieren a través de los años,
por medio de la familia, los
medios de comunicación, los
amigos, la educación, etc.
Históricamente este tipo de
personalidad se creó en la
segunda mitad del Siglo XIX,
cuando surgió un movimiento
intelectual racista en Europa,
el cual se expandió alrededor
del mundo.
Uno de los máximos repre
sentantes de esta corriente es el
filósofo inglés Hebert Spencer.
Según su punto de vista, Europa
se convirtió en la cuna de la
modernización y en el núcleo de
grandes descubrimientos revo
lucionarios en los campos de
la tecnología, economía, artes,
política, física, entre otros, de
bido a un esquema natural de
los seres (blancos) más fuertes
e inteligentes de la tierra.
Los hallazgos de Spencer
tuvieron aceptación alrededor
del mundo, principalmente en
aquellas regiones donde los
grupos minoritarios nacionales
y étnicos empezaban a tener
afluencia en sociedades domi
nantes por la cultura occidental.
En Europa, particularmente,
en Alemania, los estudios racis

tas de Spencer fueron uno de los
tantos elementos que motivaron
al régimen de Adolfo Hitler a
un proceso de linchamiento que
desembocó en el Holocausto
durante la Segunda Guerra
Mundial. Más de seis millones
de judíos perecieron en campos
de concentración Nazi por el
simple hecho de ser conside
rado de “raza” inferior.
En Estados Unidos produjo
un movimiento social racista
que estableció la segregación
institucional en el sector pú
blico y privado. Las escuelas,
centros comerciales, restauran
tes, buses, lugares de trabajo,
fueron divididas legalmente de
acuerdo al origen étnico de las
personas. Es decir, una persona
de color –afroamericana, latina
o asiática— no tenía el derecho
de hacer uso de los baños públi
cos asignados específicamente
al grupo mayoritario euronorteamericano.
En consecuencia, en el mundo
de Spencer existía una jerarquía
social en base a los potenciales
naturales de las personas. En
la cima se ubicaban las po
blaciones occidentales de Eu
ropa, mientras que en el fondo
estaban los afroamericanos.
El resto de las “razas”, depen
diendo en el color de la piel y
de sus supuestas capacidades
cognitivas, se encontraban en
el medio.
Hoy está misma filosofía está
de moda con el movimiento que
apoya a Donald Trump. Toda
esta gente, tal como lo men
cionó Teodoro Adorno, tiene
una personalidad autoritaria y
claman por la llegada de gober
nantes fascistas y racistas.
Lo interesante es que vivimos
en una sociedad democrática.
Todos podemos votar y elegir
a nuestros gobernantes. Por lo
tanto es muy importante regis
trarse y especialmente votar
por aquellas personas creyentes
en la diversidad y el gobierno
incluyente.

For Latino owned-businesses,
family and community are key,
however the future survivabil
ity of their business may be
questionable. According to a
new study by Massachusetts
Mutual Life Insurance Company
(MassMutual), research from
the “2015 MassMutual Business
Owner Perspectives Study” re
vealed that 80 percent of Latino
respondents expect to pass their
businesses on to a family mem
ber – most often a child.
However, 37 percent of those
individuals said their chosen
successor might not even know
about this succession plan.
For Latino business owners,
the aspiration to live the Ameri
can dream is no different, but
the definition of success may
be broader, encompassing their
ability to care for and support
extended families, friends, and
their communities. The study
reported they feel a strong sense
of responsibility to their fami
lies and communities but tend
to lack financial confidence and
knowledge to put plans in place
to ensure they can continue to
provide for them.
“Latino entrepreneurs are
strongly interconnected with
their businesses, community
and families,” said Dr. Chris
Mendoza, Latino Markets Di
rector, MassMutual. “Without
the proper financial knowledge
and preparation, Latino business
owners are inhibited from fully
realizing and protecting their
dreams.”
Latino-owned businesses are
growing at double the national
rate, according to the U.S. Cen
sus. And more so than the gener
al average, Latino entrepreneurs
are generally younger and more
likely to take community into
account when making business
decisions. Additionally, the ma
jority of those surveyed started
their businesses to pursue the
American Dream, take control
of their lives, and support their
families. Yet many do not have
the necessary knowledge and
resources in place to gain that
control and secure a healthy
financial future for their families.
When it comes to taking ac
tion to address essential business
planning issues, Latino business
owners face many challenges in
achieving their version of the
American Dream.
Protecting against the unforeseen
• Only half of the Latino busi
ness owners surveyed have a for
malized plan in place (a buy-sell
agreement) to protect themselves
for an untimely death; even
fewer have a buy-sell agreement
in place for disability.
• Protecting the business (35
percent) and family (37 percent)
are the primary motivators for
having these plans in place, yet
an unforeseen illness or injury
could jeopardize their ability to
meet that goal.
Planning for the next generation of your business
• While Latino business own
ers are ahead of their general
population peers, when it comes
to succession planning (49 per
cent of Latinos vs. 41 percent
of the general population have
a succession plan), only about
half of the Latino business own
ers surveyed have any type of
succession plan in place.
• Eighty percent said they
would pass the business on to
a family member – most often
a child. However, 37 percent
of those individuals said their
chosen successor might not even
know he/she is the successor
(significantly higher than 23 per
cent of the general population).
Retirement
• Forty percent don’t have
any retirement savings plan
outside of their businesses and
either plan to continue receiv
ing income from the business
post-retirement or will use the
proceeds from the sale of the
business to fund their retirement.

significantly more likely than the
general population to say they

(9 percent vs. 14 percent of the
general population).
The study was conducted by
MassMutual to better understand
how to help prepare U. S. Latino
businesses to not only sustain fu
ture generations but the Ameri
can economy as a whole. The
results of the study are designed
to help Latino business owners,
as well as their family members,
engage in a meaningful dialogue
about how to best position their
businesses for long-term success
and stability.
To help get the word out,
MassMutual took the results
on the road, starting with three
conference locations, to create
dialogue and see how the na
tional results stack up against
reality. The first stop was the
ALPFA Convention, Aug. 6-10
in New York, N.Y., followed by
the SCORE National Conference
in Reno, Nev., Aug. 10-13 and
the Hispanic Dental Association
(HDA) Conference in San Anto
nio, Texas, Aug. 13-16.

Methodology
The research was conducted
by Hawk Partners for Mas
sachusetts Mutual Life Insur
ance Company (MassMutual)
via a 20-minute online survey
of 307 Latino and 801 general
population business owners from
January 23 – March 9, 2015. The
sampling margin of error for
this study is +/– 4.6% percent
age points when looking at the
results for the Latino population.

The Children’s Shelter and
Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas)
joined the Alliance for Strong
Families and Communities earlier
this week to kick-off a national
campaign aimed at reforming
federal child welfare financing.
The campaign, known as Keep
ing Kids in Families, urges law
makers to develop and support
policy solutions that focus on
increasing investment in preven
tion, early intervention and treat
ments before the abuse occurs.
“It’s a proactive approach very
much focusing on prevention,”
Doggett said. “So much of our
federal dollars and our other
dollars around the country are at
the other end after the abuse has
already occurred.”
The congressman announced
that he will introduce the Family
Stability and Kinship Care Act
to fulfill one of the campaign’s
major objectives.
“The bill will advance child
welfare reform by providing un
precedented support for the type
of preventative care that is not
happening enough now to keep
kids safe and to keep families to
gether,” Doggett said. “There are
some additional federal dollars
that need to be invested in this
area to support evidenced based
methods.”
The Children’s Shelter offers
several evidence-based practices,
including a Nurse Family Partner
ship Program that gives care and
support to low-income first-time
mothers. Through the program,
a registered nurse guides the
mother from pregnancy until
the child turns two year old. The
mother receives the care and sup
port she needs to have a healthy
pregnancy; she learns how to
be a responsible ad competent
mother and receives guidance
on how to be more economically
self-sufficient.
Similarly, The Children’s Shel
ter offers a Compadre y Compa
dre program that uses a nurturing
curriculum to strengthen father’s
in their role as a caregiver.
iParent SA is another program
offered by The Children’s Shelter
that offers parenting support and
resources to all parent in Bexar
County.
Increased federal funding
would give them the resources
they need to reach out to more
families in need.
“We know prevention works,”
President and CEO of The Chil

said. “We know that if we can
strengthen families and work with
parents, it makes a difference and
it makes for stronger children and
it makes for stronger communities
and a stronger nation all the way
around.”

abandoned and neglected. While
the court decides where they child
will go, they stay at the emer
gency shelter.
“Almost all of them, if you
were to ask them where they
wanted to go after they leave the
emergency shelter, almost all of
them say they want to go home,
they want to be with their par
ents,” Rodriguez said.
Currently, the largest source of
federal funding is only accessible
once a child is removed from
the home. The campaign hopes
to strengthen families through
evidence informed practices that
strengthen families and prevent
traumatic and expensive entry
into foster care.
“For far too long we as a na
tion have operated under an
outdated system that favors one
intervention only, foster care and
that does not always allow us to
meet the needs of our children,”

to adopt a modern comprehensive
approach that helps us do a bet
ter job for helping more families

currently weighs three pounds
and 11 ounces, so my little man is
growing,” said Leah Hernandez,

seen dramatic improvements.

The University of the Incarnate
Word (UIW) will host a gala in
Irapuato, Mexico commemo
rating the opening of a second
academic site in that country,
at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20 on
the campus grounds located in
Irapuato, Mexico.
UIW’s latest campus in
Irapuato is located in the Gua
najuato State, heartland of the
well-known Bajío region. UIW
is now the only American uni
versity with two campuses in
Mexico, according to the Border
Education Research Team at the
State University of New York at
Albany.
In 2016, UIW will add six
bachelors and two master’s de
gree programs (these will be dual
degrees accredited in Mexico
and the U.S.). UIW will continue
adding more degree programs in
subsequent years.

Olivia’s Mexican Restaurant original owners retire from business

When family and business mix
together, the results can blend
into hard work and dedication
to get the dream to come alive—
this is the case for the De Leon
Family.
Olivia’s Mexican restaurant,
which opened on February 6,
1981, started out as a small
dream for Agustin De Leon,
former owner of the restaurant.
After working in Saspamco’s
Dickey Clay Company for 30
Years, De Leon decided it was
time to take a risk and open up
his own Mexican restaurant.
Yolanda Gonzalez, De Leon’s
daughter and current owner of
the restaurant, explains that the
dream her father had was at first
a little rough for the family. This
hard work eventually led to sac
rifices for De Leon to keep the
restaurant alive.
“He started there with no es
tablishment or ever owning a res
taurant…the beginning was kind
of scary. [We would ask] Are
we going to make it you know
because it was not established…
and he went through a lot to get
it going,” Gonzalez went on to
further explain that the family
even, “spent our Christmases and
all our holidays at the restaurant
because my dad never closed…
so we had to go there to see him
on holidays because we didn’t al
ways work all of us work within
our profession and everything
revolved around our dad.”
All the examples Agustin De
Leon has provided to his chil
dren allowed them to develop
the work ethic carried by their
father. In fact, at a certain part
of their lives, all De Leon fam
ily members have worked inside
the restaurant to jump start their
careers.
“We are eight siblings and
we all worked there at one time,
helped out in the kitchen and
waiting tables. My brother Billy
De Leon has been with us for 30
years and he has never missed
one day of work. The only time
he has missed is if he had jury
duty.” Gonzalez went on to ex
plain that her, “Brother Edward
worked with my sister (Imelda
De Leon) for 22 years and he is
working with us right now for
like eight months and he has
never missed a day of work at
Floresville. That’s what dedica
tion is to a business and we are
very dependable.”
It was not long until Imelda
De Leon, De Leon’s daughter,
decided to open up Olivia’s
Mexican Restaurant #2 in Flo
resville and has been there for
22 years. Then in 2005, Agustin
Deleon retired; so, Gonzalez and
her husband Frank Gonzalez
decided to take on the business
as Gonzalez’s father decided to
retire from his 24/7 job while
working in their own career.
“My Husband and I are both
retired from our jobs…I worked
at Colonial Cake Co for 16 years
and UT Health Science Center
for 22 years. Frank retired from
the Post Office with 35 years
government service. We both
served in the U.S. Navy and
Olivia’s for ten years,” Gonza
lez said.
After working a combined to
tal of more than sixty years, the
De Leon family plans to retire
Olivia’s in San Antonio, but,
the Olivia’s at Floresville under
the De Leon Family will remain
open. Gonzalez went on to dis
cuss that the hard work you put
in the food industry can become
exhausting overtime and now is
the time for the family to rest.
“We are just going to do some
light traveling because my dad
is 84. We would like to relax
because we don’t know what
that is. So our bodies are saying
its time,” explained Gonzalez.

cables, tuberías, calderas, generadores, trampas de vapor, bombas,
válvulas, tableros eléctricos, empaques, material para empacar,

NAPSM. Un nuevo informe
ofrece noticias positivas sobre la
salud de los hispanos en EE.UU.,
pero también trae datos preocu
pantes.
El informe, publicado por los
Centros para el Control y la Pre
vención de Enfermedades (CDC
por sus siglas en inglés), afirma
que aunque los hispanos tienen
una mejor condición de salud que
los ciudadanos blancos no his
panos en cuanto a la mayoría de
los factores de salud analizados,
la población latina continúa te
niendo tasas de mortalidad mucho
más altas por enfermedades como
diabetes y cirrosis crónica del
hígado, así como por homicidio
y una más alta prevalencia de
obesidad.
Desde el punto de vista de la
salud pública, estos resultados son
importantes en muchas maneras.
Por ejemplo, una de cada seis per
sonas en EE. UU. es hispana. Esto
significa que casi 57 millones
de personas podrían estar más

morning. Not only will you and

Rosalynn Carter, it says: “There
are only four kinds of people in
the world: those who have been
caregivers, those who currently
are caregivers, those who will be
caregivers, and those who will need
caregivers.”
The Hispanic community fully
understands and embodies that
notion. They learn as children that
taking care of their parents once
they age is the natural course of
life.
For Latinos, family is the base
of
their caregiving system, and it

On average, Latinos live longer
than the general population. By
2050, the Hispanic share of the el
derly population will almost triple
in comparison to 2005. Combined
with health issues that are prevalent
and/or undetected amongst the
Hispanic population —conditions
like diabetes and depression— the
burden on caregivers could grow
exponentially.
Latinos don’t think of them
selves as caregivers because it
is part of their upbringing. They
consider taking personal care of
their relatives as a duty, but they
also consider it an act of love. Yet,
despite the underlying expecta
tions being ever present, most of
them are caught by surprise and
unprepared to face their caregiv
ing journey.
Hispanic caregivers and their
families also face additional dif
ficulties: they often must deal with
both language and cultural barriers
as they navigate the health and
social service systems. Addition
ally, there are a lack of culturally
proficient elderly care services for
the Hispanic population.

Cuanto uno menos pien
sa suceden cosas que nunca
quisiéramos que ver. En días
pasados se me quebró el alma
de saber que uno de mis cono
cidos, con quien he llevado una
buena relación (entre alcohóli
cos) desde que entramos en
plan de sobriedad, repentina
mente sufrió recaída.
Lo que más me dolió fue que
no consumió bebidas alcohóli
cas, sino que se inclinó por la
nefasta heroína.
“Mi buen Franco, sé que
me vas a regañar o a entregar
a la policía. Resulta que me
encontré una dosis de heroína
(“Chiva” como también se le
conoce a dicha droga ilegal),
la cual –a escondidas– opté por
inhalarla, ya que en mi vida la
había probado”, comentó mi
conocido.
Él aceptó que no se arrepin
tió de haberla probado, in
dicándome que tras habérsela
acabado y –ya sintiendo las
reacciones por la falta de dicha
droga ilegal– optó por buscar
a surtidores, entregándose
por completo al consumo de
heroína en polvo.
El consejo que le di al re
caído amigo fue que si en
verdad encontraba placer en el
consumo de la droga, pues que
le siguiera y le diera hasta que
volviera a topar con duro. Ya
para nada me preocupé por dar
le consejos de que fuese a una
agrupación donde se recuperan
drogadictos y alcohólicos.
Esa fue su decisión y se la
respeto, ya que seré yo quien
se cuide de no recaer en el
alcohol.
Lo que le pasó a mi estimado
conocido es una cadena: cuan
do uno de nosotros recae en
adicciones corre por nuestra
cuenta volver a recuperar la
sobriedad.
Lo bueno de mi conocido es
que económicamente está sol
vente y su fortuna no se la va a
terminar por ser millonario, lo
que sí creo que se va a acabar
será él mismo.
La heroína no respeta niveles
de vida social. En mis 60 años
de vida he visto de todo. Cono
cidos de todos los sectores se
han ido al viaje sin retorno por
el alcoholismo o por el con
sumo desmedido de drogas ile
gales y recetadas medicamente.
Su recaída por el consumo
de la heroína le llevará a mi
conocido a una nueva etapa en
su vida. Bien puede tomar una
pronta decisión por retomar
su estado sobrio o continuar
inhalando (o inyectándose la
dizque llamada “Chiva”), el
maldito polvo. Su familia to
davía no se ha dado cuenta, ya
que él no ha dejado de realizar
sus acostumbradas actividades;
sin embargo, la falta de apetito
lo ha llevado a la pérdida de
peso, y eso que solo tiene un
par de semanas consumiendo el
prohibido derivado de la planta
del opio.
Lo que más me sorprende
es que yo como alcohólico en
recuperación también he es
tado a punto de sufrir recaída
y entregarme al consumo de
bebidas embriagantes. Más,
no aventurarme en adicción de
drogas ilegales. Para mí ello
sería lo último en hacer.
Yo quiero que mi conocido
tome conciencia sobre el daño
que se esté haciendo; sin em
bargo, ya no seré la persona que
le suplique, como recurso para
que él recapacite. Puede ser que
uno de estos días se pase en la
medida de su consumo diario
del enervante, que lo obligue
a consultar con su doctor o sea
transportado por sobredosis a
la sala de emergencia.
Lo bue no a mi ma l estar
moral por no querer ayudar
a mi conocido se ha venido
recuperando, porque de una
mala noticia resultó otra más
positiva.
Mientras veía un segmento
noticioso por la cadena CNN
(Cable News Network) con
sede en Atlanta, Georgia, pude
fijarme en una de sus breves
notas rotativas que se anun
ciaba que en el cuartel poli
ciaco de la ciudad pesquera de
Gloucester (condado de Essex,
Massachusetts) se comenzó a
ofrecer amnistía a drogadictos
consumidores de heroína.
En lugar de capturar y en
juiciar ante la autoridad mu
nicipal a los adictos, se tomó
la decisión de perdonarles el
delito contra la salud, como
alternativa a su lucha contra las
drogas ilícitas para darles opor
tunidad de desintoxicación y
recuperación. Entre los adictos
se cuentan a hombres y mujeres
de todas las edades.
La decisión fue tomada tras
la súplica de una joven mujer,
quien entró a la comandancia
(Gloucester Police Headquar
ters) mostrando un ojo morado.
La joven al parecer iba a poner
algún reporte para hacerle car
gos a quien le había causado el
hematoma en su pómulo.
Ella se abstuvo de señalar a
quien o quienes la golpearon,
solicitando ayuda inmediata
para entregarse a programa de
desintoxicación por consumo
de heroína.
Su plegaria fue aceptada
y tras haber pasado un corto
tiempo en la sala de emergencia
pasó a pernoctar en una de las
celdas del cuartel policiaco.
Posteriormente, se le dio
proceso a su petición, naciendo
desde ese momento la alterna
tiva de proporcionarle ayuda a
todo adicto que ahí acuda.
De acuerdo a la publicación
digital Boston.com, el jefe
policiaco de Gloucester City,
Leonard Campanello, dijo lo
siguiente: “Adictos que vengan
por su cuenta a presentarse
ante nuestra barandilla serán
ayudados. Si en su poder traen
algún tipo de drogas, no serán
procesados en posesión de
sustancias ilegales, sino que
desde esos momentos se les
brindará la ayuda necesaria en
los programas de abstinencia y
recuperación”.
Así es que como la ven uste
des, mis tres lectores, qué les
parecería si nuestras autori
dades policiacas del municipio
de San Antonio y condado de
Bexar tomaran de ejemplo lo
emprendido por la pesquera
ciudad de Gloucester (fundada
en el año 1642), que no rebasa
los 30 mil habitantes, pero que
de buen corazón desea erradi
car el consumo de enervantes
dándole amnistía al drogadicto
que desea una oportunidad más
en el cambio de vida.
En un nuevo reporte de dicha
agencia policiaca se informó
que más de 100 drogadictos se
han involucrado en el programa
de amnistía, acudiendo a los
programas que recientemente
fueron establecidos. Estos
programas van a ser financia
dos con fondos económicos
confiscados a traficantes de
drogas, donativos públicos y
de compañías de seguro médico
privadas.
Los daños que deja la absti
nencia del consumo de heroína
son de gran impacto mental y
físico, por lo que quienes se han
iniciado en este vicio todavía
están a tiempo (como ejem
plo, mi conocido) de salirse
de ese torbellino. Solo así se
evitarán contraer el síndrome
de abstinencia que les dejará
la desintoxicación con las
variantes reacciones como:
fiebre, espasmos musculares,
depresión, ansiedad, lagrimeo,
diarrea, vómito, taquicardia,
daño hepático, úlceras, dolor
de huesos, irritación nasal, paro
cardiaco y hasta pérdida del
conocimiento y muerte.
Mi recomendación es no
aventurarse en el consumo
de heroína, así como de otras
drogas ilegales. En caso de
que ya estén pasando por esas
experiencias o si tienen algún
amigo y familiar que se ha
iniciado busquen ayuda lo más
pronto posible.
En San Antonio y el condado
de Bexar existen centros de
desintoxicación tanto privados
como sin fines de lucro. Solo
basta buscar la información

As the NFL regular season
draws near, things are heating up
at training camps across the league
and especially at joint practices.
Every year at training camps
there are fights between some
players. But they always seem to
be heated for five minutes then
go out and compete. This year,
instead of a play getting under
the skin of two players, fans at
joint practices are seeing whole
teams fight.
There have been two instances
between multiple squads getting
into a major fight that ultimately
ended these practices. The first
took place between the Houston
Texans and Washington Redskins
after much trash talking between
the two teams the previous day.
The last day of their joint practice
turned ugly the last 45 minutes.
After a couple of cheap shots,
a fight broke out that ended after
both teams cleared their sidelines
to join in or break it up. Players
who weren’t dressed out also took
part in the fight.
The next major incident took
place between the Dallas Cowboys and the St. Louis Rams. A
St. Louis player gave a cheap shot
to a Cowboy after the whistles,
which led to a brawl between the
two teams. Most of the fight was
Rams players giving cheap shots
from behind to Cowboys players.

Every NFL fan understands
there is fights here and there due
to some heated tension under the
sun. But joint practices with major
brawls are putting these players at
even more risk for danger. Others might say it’s a good thing
showing that they are hungry and
tough, but all it takes is for one
punch to do serious damage like
a broken jaw. After what happen

coaching staff and organizations
are starting to worry about player
safety.
Joint practices are meant to
give players an opportunity to
work with different teams besides
theirs, not to get in brawls and
prove who the toughest in the
league. With the NFL now starting
to crack down and give punishments, the future of joint practices
are in the air. All fans truly want

Billups in 2012-2013 and forward
Shane Battier in 2013-2014.
According to the NBA official
release, the award recognizes the
player deemed the best teammate
based on selfless play, on- and
off-court leadership as a mentor,
being a role model to other NBA
players and commitment and
dedication to team.
Six players from each conference were nominated for the
award by a panel of NBA legends
and nearly 300 NBA players
voted.
According to NBA.com, Duncan received 72 first place votes
and finished with a total of 1,494
points. Runner up Vince Carter
received 28 first-place votes and
finished with 818 points. Elton
Brand came in third place with
21 first-place votes and a total of
707 points.
Teammates were not allowed to
vote which made it special for the
18 year veteran who is entering
his 19 season.
“That’s what makes it the most
special, knowing that people
voted me and chose me for this
award,” Duncan said. “An amazing honor. It’s taken so long to get
to this point, to accept the award.
But I was really stoked when I
heard about it. It’s truly an honor.”
Duncan has led the San Antonio
Spurs to 18 playoff appearances,
16 straight seasons with at least
50 wins, six conference titles as
well as finals appearances and five
NBA titles. Nonetheless, it is the
little things such as taking major
pay cuts to bring back teammates,
cutting his minutes and passing
the torch over.
“It’s wonderful that Tim Duncan has been recognized with
this award,” said Spurs General

com). “Everyone is aware of
his personal accolades through
the years. But perhaps Tim’s

Duncan credits the players that
came before him and mentored
him when he was a young player
in the late 1990s.
“I know how to be the way I
am because of people that came
before me,” Duncan said. “The
people I was able to be teammates
with, be around, watch them operate, watch them work, watch them
as teammates [and] watch them
accept the role. All those things
are big pieces in what I am today
and who I am today. So a lot of
credit goes to them, as well.”
Last season’s winner, Shane
Battier, will officially present the
award to Duncan at a Spurs home
game this fall.

para ella fue satisfactorio ya que
tuvo la oportunidad de saludar a
sus ex compañeras y directivos.
“Me he sentido bien después
de haber perdido de jugar por
varios partidos. Sin embargo
seguiré trabajando junto con
mis compañeras para retomar
mi estilo de juego. Es claro que
esta noche no se jugó defensiva
y ofensivamente, pero se logró
seguir con nuestro plan de juego
con jugadoras titulares y suplentes”, dijo Montgomery.
De acuerdo al calendario de la
WNBA a las Stars les resta jugar
siete de los 34 partidos programados, con tres de local y cuatro de
visitantes.

Sprint Cup Victory at Michigan 400

of the high-drag aerodynamic
package, leading 146 of 200 laps
in winning for the third time this
season, the third time at Michigan
and the 34th time in his career.
The 2003 premier series champion had to survive a restart with
13 laps left, after Jimmie Johnson spun off Turn 4 to cause the
eighth and final caution of the

“Denny
did a spectacular job pushing
me,” Kenseth said of the last run.

race-whoever got locked up- and
those Chevys could really hook
up.”
“Denny did a heck of a job giving me a good push there to get
by. Honestly, the toughest one
was with 3 (Dillon, with the two
drivers swapping the lead after
a restart on Lap 131). We went
back and forth a few times and
made some contact there, and it
was hard to get away from him.
My car took about five laps to
get going, but once it got going,
it was pretty stellar.”
Harvick ran out of fuel under
green on Lap 114 but recovered
to finish second. Martin Truex Jr.
ran third, followed by Austin Dillon (who started from the rear of
the field after an engine change)
and Hamlin finished fifth.
Kenseth’s victory was the fifth
for Joe Gibbs Racing in the last
six Spring Cup races but Kenseth
stopped short of declaring the
JGR cars the favorites for the
series championship this year.
There are three regular-season
races left before the 10-race
Chase for the NASCAR Sprint
Cup playoffs start at Chicagoland
Speedway on September 20.
“It’s early to talk favorites
–there’s so much racing to do,
and there are 16 teams (in the
Chase) that are capable of winning races on a weekly basis as
well as a championship,” Kenseth
said. “It’s one week at a time like
always. It’s been a great week,
and we’ve had a great couple of
months. We definitely have some
momentum built. The guys gave
us a rocket today and gave us
rockets the last couple months.
We’re just going to work hard to
try to keep it rolling.”
Harvick, the reigning series
champion, has finished second in
five of his last six starts at Michigan, and he notched his seventh
runner-up result since winning
his second race of the season at
Phoenix in March.
“We had an up and down day,
that’s for sure,” said Harvick.
“The first half of the race (we)
really struggled with the handling
of the car. The guys did a great job
of getting that, and then ran out
of gas and came back and didn’t
lose a lap and were able to have a
good enough handling car to drive
back up through there.” Harvick
added. “I’ am just really proud
of my team and everything that
they did. I didn’t have anything
for the 20 (Kenseth) today, but
for everything that we overcame,
it was still a good day.”
Despite starting from the rear
of the field, Kyle Busch finished
11th, solidified his position in the
top 30 in points and moved closer
to a spot in the Chase. Now 29th
in the standing Busch leads 30thplace Justin Allgaier by 18 points
and 31st-place Cole Whitt by 23.
A four-time winner since returning from an 11-race injury
absence, Busch must be in the
top 30 after 26 races to lock up a

Jules Cappelli was a ‘Guardian Angel’
to Archbishop Flores
usually added facetiously at the
end of a comment or suggestion,
was “If you don’t mind.” One
unidentified person reportedly
joked that when Cappelli approached the gates of heaven,
he would announce, “I’m here
-- if you don’t mind.”
The youngest of four children,
Jules Anthony Cappelli was
born in San Antonio May 22,
1922, to Andrew and Josephine
Cappelli. He served in the U.S.
Army during World War II.
After training at various bases
in the United States, including
Kelly Field in San Antonio (later
Kelly Air Force Base and now
Port San Antonio), Cappelli
became a supply sergeant and
served with the 893rd Signal
Company at the Bengal Air
Depot about 60 miles from Calcutta, India. According to a unit
history published in the “Ex-CBI
Roundup” in March 1968, the
Bengal Air Depot was the largest
Army Air Forces depot outside
the continental United States.
Returning to San Antonio
after the war, Cappelli worked
29 years in civil service at
Kelly Field/Kelly Air Force
Base. A lifetime member of St.
Cecilia’s Parish on the South
Side, he joined Knights of Columbus Council 3345 in 1951,
later serving as Grand Knight.
He became a member of Fourth
Degree Knights of Columbus
Assembly 1102 in 1961, later
serving as Faithful Navigator.
Cappelli also was active in the
Holy Name Society and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for
many years.
When he wasn’t driving, Cappelli spent hours in his own
workroom just down the hall
from Archbishop Flores’ office.
He literally covered its walls
with the archbishop’s numerous plaques and awards and
prepared letters to be mailed
for upcoming events or to thank
those who helped make the
events successful.
Preceding him in death were
his parents; two brothers, John
A. Cappelli and Joseph A. Cappelli; and his sister, Mary J.
Cappelli., all of San Antonio.
Surviving are his nieces, Janie
Barborka, Shirley Ann Abate,
Esther Cappelli; and two nephews.
Rosary was recited Aug. 9
at Sunset Funeral Home. The
Mass of the Resurrection was
celebrated Aug. 10 at St. Cecilia Church with Father Edvin
Rodriguez officiating. Interment
was in San Fernando Cemetery
No. 2.

Jules Cappelli performed a
multiplicity of errands as volunteer personal aide and confidant
to former San Antonio Archbishop Patrick Flores for nearly
35 years without expecting any
repayment.
But he and the widely beloved
prelate were more like brothers than merely employer and
employee.
Cappelli, who served Texas’
highest-ranking Catholic official
between 1970 and 2005, except
for the 17 months Flores was
Bishop of El Paso in 1978-79,
died July 30 at age 93.
Archbishop Emeritus Flores
has been in declining health
since before his retirement a decade ago, but with the assistance
of Sister Mary Ann Domagalski, MSSA, director of Padua
Place, he attended Cappelli’s
rosary service Aug. 9 at Sunset
Funeral Home. She wheeled
him up close to the open casket,
where he prayed over the body
and blessed his old friend for the
last time.
Shortly after Father Patrick
Flores was ordained auxiliary
bishop of San Antonio at the
urging of Archbishop Francis J.
Furey on Cinco de Mayo 1970,
the first favor he asked for was
a driver. A longtime Kelly Air
Force Base civil service worker,
Cappelli had plenty of time, especially after he retired from the
civil service in the mid-1970s.
He served the bishop full-time,
always being punctual giving
whatever assistance the bishop
needed, whether it was morning, noon or night, and always
carrying enough pocket money
for contingencies.

The Society of St. Vincent de
Paul even conferred a “Guardian
Angel Award” on him in 1996,
noting that he was the archbishop’s dependable go-to man
whenever he needed a driver, an
organizer, a messenger, a chef
or a confidant. The award also
cited his cheerful devotion for
more than a quarter-century in
scrambling eggs and cooking
bacon and beans at the crack of
dawn for the poor each Sunday
at the SAMMinistries shelter.

Herrera recalled that even before the

more than just that of employer
and employee.
“He’s like a brother to me,” he
said without hesitation. “I can
talk to him just like I’m talking
to you, with no formality.” Even
when they disagreed, he added,
“I respect his opinion, and he
respects mine.”
Cappelli knew how to make
others feel special, often greeting visitors to the chancery
with the words, “It’s nice to
see somebody important,” or
“We’re lucky you’re here.”
His other signature expression,

off the backs of others, Pope says

Pope Francis said Wednesday
that work is something sacred,
and called out those who abuse
it by either contributing to the
unemployment crisis, or refusing
to work in order to feed off the
system.
“Work is precisely from the human being. It expresses his dignity
of being created in the image of
God. Therefore it is said that work
is sacred,” the Pope said Aug. 19.
Because of this, he added,
managing employment “is a great
human and social responsibility
which can’t be left in the hands of
the few, or discharged to a divinized market.”
The Pope spoke to pilgrims
present in the Vatican’s Paul VI
Hall for his Wednesday general
audience. His comments are part
of his continued series of catechesis on the family.
After announcing last week that
he would shift his focus to the different rhythms of family life, such
as celebration, work and prayer,
Francis today turned to the topic
of work.
“Through work, the family is
cared for and children are provided
with a dignified life. So too the
common good is served, as witnessed by the example of so many
fathers and mothers who teach
their children the value of work for
family life and society,” he said.
Francis noted how in the bible
the Holy Family appears as a family of workers, and Jesus himself
was referred to as “the son of a carpenter” and even “the carpenter.”
He criticized the lifestyle of
those who refuse to work, choosing instead to live off others.
Even St. Paul, in his second letter to the Thessalonians, doesn’t
hesitate to admonish the Christians
who espouse this attitude when he
tells them “whoever doesn’t want
to work, doesn’t eat,” Francis
observed.
Although this might be “a nice
recipe to lose weight,” what St.
Paul refers to is the “false spiritualism of some who live off the backs
of their brothers and sisters without doing anything,” the Pope said.
However, on the other hand he
said that because work is something sacred, managing it within
civil society is a major responsibility, and “to cause a loss of jobs
is to cause a serious social harm.”
The Pope told attendees that
he is always sad when he sees a
person who lacks work and the
dignity of bringing bread home to
their family.
But “it gives me joy when I see
that the governments make a lot of
effort to find places of work and
ensure that everyone has work,” he
said, and encouraged those present
to pray that no family suffer from

He quoted the Book of Genesis,
recalling how when God made the
heavens and the earth “not a plant
of the field was on the land, no
herb of the field had yet sprung
up – the Lord God had not sent the
rain on the earth and no one had
tilled the soil and made rise the
water of the canals for irrigation.”
Man’s role in caring for creation
“isn’t romanticism, it’s God’s
revelation,” the Pope said, adding
that man has the responsibility
to both understand creation and
cultivate it fully.
“The land becomes beautiful
when it is worked by man. They
go together,” he said.
Pope Francis then turned to
the balance between work and
spiritual life. He said that the two
are not opposed, but rather go hand
in hand, since work expresses the
dignity of the human person, created in God’s image.
“Prayer and work can and
should go together in harmony...

the spirit, just as the lack of prayer
damages every practical activity.”
Part of the challenging mission
God has given to Christian families is to present the basic elements

Among these foundations, he

“The loss of these fundamental

La Prensa de San Antonio ‘All Can Ski’ brings rare opportunity
for those with disabilities

In 1992, Wendy Gumbert, manager for the Texas Regional Paralympic Sports, and her boss founded the All Can Ski program which
is now sponsored by SeaWorld
Cares and San Antonio Sports.
The only task that Gumbert and
her boss faced in 1992 with their
proposal to SeaWorld, was the
initial meeting with the SeaWorld
executives. Once they allowed
bring someone with a disability to
prove how safe it was they knew
they were going to get approved.
“Once we brought the athlete
out and showed them the skiing
and went with one of the skiers
and actually [did it]. That part
actually sold itself,” Gumbert said.
“Because they saw how safe it was
and how much it was similar to
regular skiing.”
Safety was the biggest worry
the SeaWorld executives had at
the time until Gumbert’s athletes
proved it was.
“They saw the joy the athletes
received for such a sport,” Gumbert
said. “The safety was their main
concern and that didn’t seem to be
a problem.
Twenty-three years later, the
clinic is still going strong. It consists of six sessions over the course
of three days. The first five sessions
are for all ages and the final session
is specially made for the wounded
warriors.
This year, the youngest participant was six years old and the
old oldest was in their late sixties.
The clinic is also the largest in the
state of Texas and one largest in
the United States. It includes over
140 skiers in a three-day period.
Gumbert credits SeaWorld enter-
tainment a great deal.
“[SeaWorld] involvement in this
is excellent. Their skiers are the
ones who make it work successfully,” Gumbert said.
Their were many first timers at
the event. Donna Tomlinson and
her grandson Brian participated in
their first ski clinic.
“It was my first time and I’m
having so much fun,” Brian said.
“I want to come back every year.”
Tomlinson had not done this in
30 years and, “it actually brought
back the freedom that you have
when you actually get to ski with
both legs,” Tomlinson said. “Because I did that 30 years ago and it
is such a nice feeling.”
The three-day event concluded
this past Thursday and continues to
grow as newcomers look forward to
coming back each year.
“I’m going to comeback as many
times as I can,” said Tomlinson.

Six months ago, the Witte Museum broke ground on the latest
phase of its ongoing expansion.
This week, Marise McDermott, president and CEO of the
Witte Museum, shared an update
on the project and recognized an
important partner.
McDermott explained the new
museum entrance, known as
H-E-B Lantern, will include a
life-size Pterosaur model flying
overhead as visitors enter the
Valero Great Hall. A technology
driven admissions area will lead
visitors into a space depicting
what Texas looked like millions
of years ago.
“This is an experience you
can only have here at the Witte
Museum,” McDermott said.
She recognized H-E-B for
their unwavering support and
contribution to the new Witte.
“We can’t imagine a more perfect partner to help us welcome
what we believe will be 600,000
visitors at least,” McDermott
said.
Winell Herron, group vice
president of Public Affairs,
Diversity and Environmental
Affairs at H-E-B, presented the
Witte Museum with a $2 million
check while H-E-B Partners and
the James Madison High School
Drumline cheered on.
“Our commitment to the infusion of creativity into education
is at the heart of who we are as a

history in the making with the
new Witte Museum, a place that
we know will follow inspiration
in every visitor that steps through
these doors no matter their age.”
The Witte will add more than
100,000 square feet of space
through the expanded and renovated main building.
Phase one of the improvement
project was completed through
the addition of the H-E-B Body
Adventure and the Robert J. and
Helen C. Kleberg South Texas
Heritage Center, among other
improvements. The Mays Family Center is scheduled to open
in 2016 while the main building
is slated to reopen in the spring
of 2017.

PUPS will be the first dual exhibit, which will feature 16 acrylic
on canvas Chihuahua paintings.
The paintings were commissioned by Gypsy Dirt Beauty Salon
located at 535 Busby Drive; Tamie
Parker, owner and coordinator of
Texas Chihuahua Rescue (TCR),
Dandyland Tattoos & Piercings, and
Lucky Mutt Marketing & Project
Management.
The goal with this project is to
raise funds for TCR by painting a
series of Chihuahuas giving each
painted pup their own special identity. The earthy, organic tones that
we used are inspired by our recent
trip to New Mexico as well as the
colors normally found in Texas
nature and Culture.
TCR is a non-profit foster-based
group of enthusiasts that place
Chihuahuas & Chihuahua mixes in
approved homes.
Tamie Parker mentions that
“Chihuahuas are the number one
euthanized dog in the state of
Texas”, which is why it is important for these dogs to find loving
and safe homes. Dog owners are
encouraged to bring their pets to the
PUPS event, which will be held this
Saturday at Uptown Studio & is free
to the public.
All ages are welcome from 5 p.m.
to 7 p.m. with entertainment by the

“War of the Squirrels.” In this series,
he focuses on the interaction between human and animal. He gives
animals such as foxes, owls, hummingbirds, vultures and squirrels
personalities that comically suggest
their intention of world domination
in which they take back the nature

Cada mes el Sistema de Abastecimiento Público de SAWS
para el Southside (PWS ID 0150249) requiere entregar
muestras de agua para pruebas bacteriológicas. Una muestra
entregada en mayo de 2015 presentó bacteria coliforme. La
presencia de bacteria coliforme indica un potencial problema
con nuestro sistema de tratamiento de agua en las tuberías
que distribuyen el agua tratada.

En el Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, la alera francesa Valeriane Ayayi, del equipo Stars de San Antonio, se unió a compañeras guardias Jia Perkins, Danielle Robinson y Samantha Logic para
colaborar en el programa “Team Up Day of Service” de la fundación Silver & Black Give Back (SBGB), que junto a jóvenes pintores de la organización MOSAIC pintaron la obra de arte titulada

Paris, France comes to S.A. with La Boulangerie

France here in San Antonio—
Thanks to La Boulangerie, you
can.
The local bakery, owned by
pastry chef Caitline Nykiel and
her parents Sylvie and Sylvain,
features authentic French ambience full of coziness and color.
La Prensa sat down and spoke to
the woman behind the kitchen of
the bakery to discuss her inspiration to stay in the food business
from a young age and even her
future plans.
“I think it’s because of my
parents. My dad used to be a
waiter, my mom cooked a lot at
home, and I think she gave me
the expression to cook. I did a lot
of things with her. I cooked with
her, I baked with her. I think it’s
just family…I cooked at home
for twelve years,” explained
Nykiel about her early years in
France.
When it came time for her to
make a life decision on which
direction to go in her future,
Nykiel decided it was time for
her to attend the prestigious
French School of Culinary Arts
in Paris. After graduating from
culinary school, the family decided to move to San Antonio
three years ago and venture into
a new chapter of mixing business
and cooking.
As the Nykiel family came
to experience the city of San
Antonio, they found out that
something was missing and there
must be a solution. This was
the opportunity for the family
to bring something from home
to San Antonio. She explained
that La Boulangerie is a small
getaway to France.
“We used to come here for
vacation and we could not really
find a real French restaurant. The
French here is more Americanized,” Nykiel went on to further
explain her and her family’s decision to, “do something French
and make them discover what
you can find in France, that was
the idea to bring a little bit of
Paris and France here. People
can’t go to France because it’s
too far and too expensive.”
However, there are many
differences when baking food
between France and America.
Nykiel confessed that at first
there were slight setbacks in the
kitchen.
“It was hard to bring it here
because people don’t have the
same ingredients as France...I
have to adapt and I wanted them
to discover what we do in France
…sometimes in France some
menus are quite complicated and
I try to use things from here. We
use peaches, pecan nuts, very
local things and organic and we
have adapted I have tried to adapt
to French techniques.”
These little problems did not
get in the way of Nykiel to carry
on the business. If you look at the
menu, you will still find delicious
pastries such as the fruit tart and
baguettes that are still made from

scratch to get a taste of the city
of lights. The majority of people
however, prefer eating something filling from the bakery.
“The ham and cheese sandwich we sell a lot. The Baker
makes the bread, the baguettes,
and we try to find some French
product directly from France.
The cheese is from France, we
add some butter that is very simple …if you find a good product
you will get it right,” explained
Nykiel about the most popular
item on the menu.
Nykiel does not want to stop
there with the family business.
She has plans to broaden her res-
taurant to Texan customers who
are interested in trying something
new and different from the typical American, Mexican, and Italian options.
“Maybe make it bigger maybe
open some more. We would like
to have more in San Antonio and
Austin. The thing [business] is
moving it is young, and who
doesn’t like to go to restaurants
to try new thing,” with that in
mind Nykiel stated, “It’s going
to be the next adventure after
San Antonio.”

John Leguizamo emerges to a higher “American Ultra”

There are many actors in the
film industry that encourage you
to see one of their favorite movies
through interviews, premieres,
or even based on their celebrity
status.
John Leguizamo, however,
stands apart from many actors
that are very popular in Hollywood. He is a chameleon that
has played many roles including
“Tybalt” in “Romeo and Juliet,”
and “Julian” in “The Happening.” Leguizamo’s new movie,
“American Ultra” was another
film that allowed Leguizamo to
overcome challenges to play a
drug dealer named Rose.
“For Rose I did not know what
to do with it, I did not know how
I was going to turn it out and all of
a sudden I got a flash of someone
I knew who was a hustler in high
school and boom that was when
Rose came to life,” explained the
veteran actor.
In Hollywood, becoming type
casted is not a great thing for the
actor and audiences alike because
there will be an expectation of
plot and actors who will portray
a certain character.
For Leguizamo, however, taking on different roles and the
baggage the character comes
along with is a risk worth taking.
In fact, for the role of “Rose,” he
did not keep up with his hygiene
for a week.
“I had these [tattoos]. The
make-up person came up to me
and said would you like a couple
of tats and I said you know what I
want the whole bag,” Leguizamo
went on to explain the process and
recalled, “It took four hours to go
in and then I asked her how long
is it going to take she said about
four hours. I was like I can’t be
getting up at 3 a.m. so how I said
how do I keep them on and she
said don’t shower, don’t sweat …
so I did none of that.”
The sacrifices many actors
make for a role allows the audience to understand that acting
is not glamorous. It takes time,
practice, and hard work to make
a blockbuster movie. Leguizamo
also said that if you work with the
right people, the chemistry, and
the plot will speak for itself to
the moviegoer. This all produced
“American Ultra.”
“The movie was really trippy.
It’s a really interesting, odd movie
and that’s what I liked about it.
The jokes weren’t in your face.
They were much more subtle and
much more sophisticated, and so
was the action …Jesse and Kristen they had mad chemistry on
and off the camera but when we
were together the three of us we
would really crack up a lot it was
nice,” said Leguizamo.
When the actor is not on a
movie set, he uses his voice to advocate for the underrepresentation
of the Latino population in the
media as he did for his comedic
performance in “Latin History for
Dummies.”
“I read in an article that said
that 45 percent of Latin kids that
drop out of high school … you’re
not taught in history any important Latin heroes and so how do
you project yourself in the future
if you don’t have a valid history in
this country,” explained the actor
“I started doing a lot of research

Erwin y Melvin Urías el globo de
metal en donde se meten con sus
motocicletas para su show “Globe
of Death” (El Globo de la Muerte)
es –sin duda– su mundo. O una gran
parte de él.
La esfera de metal de 16 pies de
diámetro encierra una tradición
de espectáculo extremo que su
bisabuelo José Da Silva Urías inauguró en Brasil en 1912, que luego
la continuaron sus padres trayéndola
a Estados Unidos en 1958 y que
ahora ellos la asumen incluso con la
participación de su esposa y novia,
respectivamente.

Death” los hermanos Urías ponen
literalmente su mundo ¡de cabeza!
Y a los espectadores con la boca
abierta.
Justamente los Urías con su
“Globe of Death” visitarán San
Antonio TX como uno de los
espectáculos principales de las presentaciones del Shrine Circus en el
Freeman Coliseum el 10, 11, 12 y
13 de septiembre próximo.
La Prensa platicó vía teléfono
con Erwin Urías quien contó que
el extremo espectáculo de meter
tres motocicletas de un cilindraje de
125 cada uno corriendo de 45 a 55
millas por hora dura alrededor de 4
a 5 minutos.
Pero para que estos 5 minutos
salgan perfectos requiere entrenos diarios hasta de 8 horas, para
practicar las diferentes maniobras,
midiendo el espacio y qué tan cerca
pueden acercarse.
“(Es) un montón de coordinación”, dice Erwin. “Además mi
esposa es la que se para dentro del
globo. Ella está suspendida y va
a estar girando en 360 grados”,
adelanta.
Con tal espectáculo extremo,
peligroso y lleno de adrenalina, los
hermanos Urías usan trajes especiales confeccionados por sus parejas
y nunca entran a la esfera sin casco.
“Como cualquier artista que
hace esta clase de espectáculo en
un tiempo a otro ha pasado algo,
por eso siempre pasamos ensayando…”, añade Erwin.
Antes de empezar el show hablan
entre ellos, verifican que están bien
y dan gracias a Dios “que nos tenga
en su más grande gloria, que nos
mantenga bien cuando estamos
haciendo el espectáculo”.
La unidad familiar
Erwin Urías, ahora de 45 años,
empezó a participar en el show de
“Globe of Death” a los 12 años en
1983 y su hermano Melvin hizo su
debut 5 años después a los 12 años,
según su biografía.

Conjunto music landmark Lerma’s seeks reprise

For as lauded as the culture of
the Alamo City is, there are few
locations as good a time capsule
as an establishment as Lerma’s
Nite Club.
The historic site has not only
been the epicenter of the Conjunto music scene in South San
Antonio for decades, but has
become a community center in
a time where gentrification is
increasingly en vogue.
The historic turquoise building
located at 1612 North Zarzamora
has featured a plethora of music
acts that span the familiar bound
and sway of traditional Conjunto
acts to the more contemporary
fare like famed indie band, Girl
in a Coma.
“Lerma’s is what we see is
‘authentic culture.’ Much of
what you see downtown is more
a caricature of what our culture
really is. When you go to Lerma’s, you get to meet the real,
working-class people of San
Antonio,” said Susana Segura, a
organizer for the #SaveLermas
Community Group.
With more live music venues
opening their doors, crowds became less abundant, but it never
lost its charm as stalwart against
the temporary music halls that
came and went. Yet reality set
in 2010 when the overwhelming cost of renovations and the
citation by the city for being
unable to stay open for safety
reasons finally caused it to close
its doors.
From then on, the #SaveLermas movement was born. At a
recent session of the San Antonio
City Council, supporters of the
location sported oversized heart
pins with the club’s iconic logo.
What they wanted was simple—

Ramon Ayala to work with reggaeton
star Daddy Yankee on next project
EFE - Mexican musician Ramon Ayala said recording a song
with Puerto Rican reggaeton star
Daddy Yankee was among his next
projects.
“I have a song for him and we’ll
record it together soon,” Ayala said
in a press conference Wednesday in
Los Angeles, where he was promoting his concert at the Greek Theatre
this weekend.
Ayala, who is always open to
eclectic projects, said he was happy
to be able to work with Daddy Yankee, whose real name is Ramon Luis
Ayala Rodriguez.
The accordion star said he would

SAISD partners with the power of a dream
to encourage students to achieve success
Fishermen Dual EP Release with special
guests Last Nighters and Octahedron

Indie-soul ensemble, fishermen, will perform for their
highly anticipated first official
EP release at Sam’s Burger Joint
on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. with some
help from local heavy hitters,
Last Nighters and up-and-coming starlets, Octahedron. The
release will include the group’s
dual EPs titled Future Wives and
Smart Kids are led by their two
singles, “Fire Me Up” and “All
My Love.”
Despite only releasing five
songs to date, the group has
managed to garner the respect
and attention of the local and
regional music community.
Blending contemporary indie
aesthetic with classic soul and
rock, fishermen boast both lofty
and eclectic influences, drawing
from timeless giants like Radiohead, Michael Jackson, Bruce
Springsteen and Marvin Gaye.
Founding members, Roy Scavone and Edwin J. Stephens hail
from the local indie-alternative
legend, Blowing Trees. Following their deal with Glassnote
Records and mild commercial
success, Stephens found himself
inspired to begin crafting soulful alternative songs and thus
founded fishermen. The members have donated their time and
talents toward various initiatives
including San Antonio’s World
Refugee Festival, DreamWeek’s
2015 Music Unites concert
series and PreK 4 SA with the
MUSIC Project, as well as pro
bono recording through their
studio on Ashby Place for local
artists, churches and nonprofit
organizations.
Focused on the exploration of
the political and social issues
plaguing our society, fishermen have struggled amidst the
resource barren landscape of
San Antonio to craft songs that
accurately reflect and impact
culture. They work to promote
love despite these tumultuous
times.

The San Antonio Independent
School District is partnering with
The Power of a Dream, an organization that encourages youth
and teens to pursue their goals
and life ambitions.
“The partnership with SAISD
and The Power of a Dream is to
inspire and engage the youth of
San Antonio to become the best
they can,” said Eric Castillo, organization director. “The Power
of a Dream wants our future generations to know that no matter
what your circumstances are or
how many fumbles you may have
in life, don’t give up because
there’s a winner in everyone.”
The Power of a Dream is
based on a documentary of the
same title that chronicles the
perseverance of Castillo, who
overcame a number of obstacles
to achieve his dream of playing
college football, which he did
when became the oldest walk-on
at age 30 for the University of the
Incarnate Word football team.
As part of the partnership between The Power of a Dream and
SAISD, more than 300 SAISD
student athletes recently attended
a free screening of the film at the
