.S. Senator Charles Schumer’s
office will be conducting
a ‎statewide lottery for one ticket to
the Joint Meeting of Congress with
His Holiness Pope Francis of the
Holy See on September 24, 2015.
Pope Francis will be the first Pope to ever
address a joint meeting of Congress.
Schumer received one guest ticket, and he
also will offer 100 pairs of tickets to the Papal
Audience on the West Lawn of the Capitol
following Pope Francis’ address. Schumer’s
office will distribute tickets during a random
drawing that will be held on August 27th, 2015.
The deadline to submit requests will be August
26th, 2015 with requests ONLY being accepted
through Schumer’s website.
Tickets for the Joint Meeting
of Congress and the Papal
Audience are only provided
through Congressional offices
and are free of charge.
“Pope Francis’ speech before
Congress will be a historic
moment for all of us, but
especially for one lucky New Yorker who will
get to attend the speech in person with a ticket

Coogan’s owner speaks on assault incident
and changes in neighborhood

A
nyone who has visited
Coogan’s Restaurant in
Washington Heights will surely
know Peter Walsh.
The eatery’s gregarious co-owner can
usually be seen bouncing from table to table,
greeting customers and engaging in lively
chats with Coogan’s diverse assortment of
customers, which includes doctors, track
athletes, local elected officials, among othes.
Quick with a smile or a joke, Walsh seems
the type it would hard to have a beef with.
“You could disagree with me on everything,
but I’d still love to talk with you,” he
remarked.
That’s why many in the neighborhood were
surprised to learn that Walsh was involved in
an altercation outside of Coogan’s on July 23,
after he was attacked by a homeless man who
demanded money.
The man was living at the Fort Washington
Men’s Shelter, located in the nearby Armory.
Walsh said he’s witnessed increasingly
aggressive behavior from shelter residents,
who frequently ask for money from
pedestrians and businesses alike.
“It doesn’t compare to anything I’ve seen
in the last 25 years,” stated Walsh.

issues involving men from the shelter, said
Walsh.
“My neighbors aside from us, the pizza
store, they threatened to break his window,”
he explained. “At the bagel shop nearby, the
tip jar has been taken right off the counter.”
According to Walsh and others in the
community, shelter residents have been
harassing locals, begging for cash in a
confrontational manner.
“They not only work solo, but they also
work as groups, antagonizing and intimidating
people,” Walsh said.
Police have acknowledged a spike in
complaints about the shelter, which houses
200 men with mental illness, some of whom
are dealing with addiction issues.

considers a red flag for the neighborhood,

from other shelters where they’re considered
too violent, or from prisons,” he added. “It’s a

Artist E’Dena Hines killed

A
quiet residential block became
the scene of a stunning and
violent tragedy this past weekend.
On Sun., Aug. 16th, shortly after 3 a.m.,
officers from the 33rd Precinct responded to
an emergency call.
Upon arriving at West 162nd Street and St.
Nicholas Avenue, they found E’Dena Hines,
33, lying on the street with multiple stabs in
her upper body.
Hines was taken to Harlem Hospital, where
she was pronounced dead.
The alleged perpetrator was Lamar
Davenport, 30, the victim’s live-in boyfriend.
He was charged with second-degree
murder on Tuesday.
Witnesses have reported hearing Davenport
invoke Jesus Christ during the fatal encounter.
Hines was an aspiring actress and the stepgranddaughter of Academy Award-winning
actor Morgan Freeman, known for films such
as Driving Miss Daisy and Million Dollar
Baby.
Her grandmother, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw,
was Freeman’s first wife.
“The world will never know her artistry
and talent and how much she had to offer,”
the Oscar winner said in a statement. “Her
star will continue to shine bright in our hearts,
thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”

and she and Davenport lived in an apartment
a few steps from the scene.
“I used to see her in the mornings and said
hello,” said Cosmos Hamilton. “She was a
quiet, very polite girl.”
Hamilton has been working on a
construction site nearby since March.
He’d never met Davenport, but he said he
felt strongly about what should happen to
whomever is determined to be the perpetrator.
“They have to lock him up forever,” he
insisted. He predicted that the defense would
involve an insanity defense. “That is what all
men do when they kill a woman. They claim
they are not good in the head. It is not right.”
Geronimo Rodríguez said he wasn’t
surprised.
“Things like that happen,” he declared.
“Those are cases that can happen anywhere.”
“It is a sad story,” said Alex, who did not
wish to disclose his last name.
Desiree Berger was speechless.
The native Texan had only moved to 450
West 162nd Street in late July. She has spent
most of the summer away on vacation, and
had only just returned a day after the stabbing,
which happened directly in front of her
building.
“I really liked it,” said Berger, speaking in
the past tense.
The incident scared her, she confessed, and
she planned on taking precautions.
“I usually walk my dog at 3 in the morning,
but I am never doing that again.”
Another neighbor, Maria Brooks, was
shocked and saddened.
“It was a terrible tragedy,” she said.
Davenport was taken to New YorkPresbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center
for a psychiatric evaluation, police said, and
he has been charged with murder.

The recent outbreak of Legionella in
the South Bronx naturally raised concerns
among residents across the city, particularly
in neighboring Northern Manhattan.
Now, as was announced this Tues., Aug.
18th by the city’s Department of Health
and the Office of Assemblymember Robert
Rodríguez, a cooling tower at Taino Towers
on 123rd Street has, in fact, tested positive
for the Legionella bacteria.
There have been no reports of anyone in
East Harlem contracting Legionellosis to
date. In a statement, Rodríguez called for
calm while urging vigilance – and insisted
that building owners be proactive about
inspection.
“If you believe that you are experiencing
any symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease,
please visit an emergency
room immediately,” he said.
“Furthermore, all landlords and
property owners with cooling
towers are expected to register,
test, and disinfect their cooling
systems for possible legionella
bacteria by order of the Department of
Health.”
He invited residents to call his district
office directly at 212.828.3953 with

To mark the 50th anniversary of National
Health Center Week, the Community
Healthcare Network (CHN) called on the
pirates.
CHN hosted a back-to-school fair and Pirate
Parade at the Helen B. Atkinson Health Center
on West 115th Street this past Wed., Aug. 12th.
The character-themed celebration drew
hundreds of local residents of all ages
for games and activities, screenings and
information gathering.
“Our job, and the job of any quality health
care system, is not just to help sick people get
better,” said CHN CEO Robert Hayes. “It is
to keep all of us as healthy as possible. The
public education that is at the heart of our
Harlem health fair does just that.”
CHN is a not-for-profit network of 12
federally qualified health centers throughout
the city that provides primary care, dental,
nutrition, mental health and social services to
low-income and uninsured New Yorkers of all
ages.
National Health Center Week seeks to
raise awareness of community health centers
(CHCs) as local and accessible solutions for
affordable health care.
Fifty years ago, there were only CHCs in
the country.
“We don’t turn patients away,”
said Director Lissa Southerland.
In contrast, the National Association of
Community Health Centers reports that today
CHCs serve more than 23 million Americans
in more than 9,200 communities across the
country.

efore he was a lock, he was at
a loss.
Jay Sofer, owner of Lockbusters, a 24/7
locksmith service, recently admitted that he
had previously had little use for an important
tool.
“Technology wasn’t exactly my thing,” he
confessed. “I was completely technological
illiterate.”
Sofer joined with a panel of small business
owners this past Tues., Aug. 11th at a panel
hosted by the technology advocacy group
Silicon Harlem and the Harlem Chamber of
Commerce at Columbia University’s Lerner
Hall.
The forum was part of Harlem Week’s
NYC Economic Development Day, held in
partnership with Yelp, the crowd-sourced
review engine.
In addition to sharing success stories, the
owners also spoke frankly about some of their
challenges.

Though he was far from technologically
astute, it was the user-driven Yelp engine
that Sofer credits for catapulting his business
forward.
“Technology was accessible for me through

explained Sofer.

The high school senior served as an official
chaperone at the second annual “Senior Prom”
at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital
this past Mon., Aug. 17th.
Approximately 50 older community
residents, some sporting heels and canes,
came ready to spin, twirl and dance salsa.
The festivities had been organized by
Pimentel and her fellow students from both
John F. Kennedy and George Washington
High Schools. Their tasks included
decorating the event space with streamers,
ribbon, and 300 balloons and helping to
serve a lunch buffet and refreshments while
DJ Linc played from a roster that included
Sinatra’s “New York, New York,” merengue,
and Cupid’s “Cupid Shuffle.”

The prom was hosted by
HealthOutreach, a free program that
promotes health and quality-oflife issues for those 60 years of age
and older. Designed to help keep
older residents active and healthy
throughout the year, it provides

lectures, and events such as the prom
to community residents. Membership
is free.
“This is an intergenerational
event,”

ranged from 14 to early nineties.

program
also
creates
opportunities for the rising high
school seniors, who hail from both
the Bronx and Northern Manhattan,
with an interest in the medical
profession. For three weeks during
the summer, the students intern at
NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen
Hospital.
Pimentel, who envisions being a doctor,
said that the program had successfully
focused on her interests.
“[It] really made me think that this is
what I want my career to be,” she said.
Bronx resident Edna Quiñones is a longtime
HealthOutreach member, and described the
program as a family.
“We have so much fun here,” she laughed.
“So much fun that we need to be chaperoned!”

Diana Rivers’ interest in being a Doctor of
Osteopathic Medicine (DO) – a professional
doctoral degree for physicians and surgeons –
was cemented in those moments.
“As a DO, this pediatrician simply used
observation and palpation to determine
that the child had pneumonia when none of
the other physicians in the practice could
determine that without further testing,”
recalled Rivers recently.
The third-year student at the Touro College
of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) in
Harlem has won the 2015 Sherry R. Arnstein
Minority Scholarship, which is awarded
by the American Association of Colleges
of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).The
scholarship, which derives its name from
former AACOM Executive Director Sherry
R. Arnstein, honors minority DO students.
Every year, at least two students who attend
one of 30 AACOM-accredited colleges are
awarded the scholarship.
Rivers is the fourth Touro medical student
and the third from Touro’s Harlem medical
school to win the $2,500 scholarship out of
24 recipients since the awards were initiated
in 2012. “I am honored to be one of the recipients,”
said Rivers, who is currently on a surgical

Laura was raised in Brazil in a city at the nexus of the Amazon basin and the
Atlantic ocean. Strongly influenced by this aquatic labyrinth and laced network of rivers
and motion, she chose ink and

20’s, as she studied yoga and
contemporary dance, she started
processing a sense of time,
space, and internal
proprioception – knowledge of the
self in space, of the interior mind
in the body and the world. Her
work evolved a focus in the
exploration of the elements of those landscapes – the strong but soft movement of
water; the intricacy of a single leaf; the textures of a tree trunk. Eventually, only lines and
space remained.
Her work has continued to deepen into
inquiries of the elements: earth, water, fire, air and
space, their nature and tendencies, through work with
textiles, alternating brushwork and wax, pigmentation,
dyes, and fluid acrylics. She lives, works and plays in
one of New York City’s only remaining nature
environments, Inwood Hill Park.

o the untrained eye, all rashes
may look alike and seem easily
treatable with over-the-counter
oral antihistamines or
hydrocortisone cream.
However, it is not so
simple, say member
dermatologists from the
American Academy of
Dermatology. Rashes
can appear as blotches, welts
or blisters; they can be red,
itchy, scaly, or dry; and they can
occur in one area of skin or all
over the body. In addition, say
dermatologists, some rashes may
come and go, while others never
seem to go away.
“Most rashes are not life-threatening, but
some can signal something more serious,”
said board-certified dermatologist Daniela
Kroshinsky, MD, MPH, FAAD, Associate
Professor of Dermatology, Harvard Medical
School. “Since rashes can have many
causes, if you have concerns, the best way to
correctly diagnose a rash is to see a doctor for
evaluation.”
If you have a rash and notice any of
the following symptoms, Dr. Kroshinsky
recommends seeing a board-certified

dermatologist or going to the emergency
room:
1. The rash is all over your body: A rash that
covers the body could indicate something
concerning, such as an infection
or allergic reaction. 2. You have a fever with the
rash: If this is the case, see your doctor
or go to the emergency room. This could
be caused by an allergic reaction or
an infection. Examples of rashes
caused by infection include scarlet
fever, measles, mononucleosis, and
shingles.
3. The rash is sudden and spreads rapidly:
This could be the result of an allergy.
Allergies to medications
are common, and some can
be dangerous. If breathing
becomes difficult, go to
the emergency room or call
911.
4. The rash begins to blister:
If your rash is made up of
blisters, or if the rash turns
into open sores, it could be
the result of an allergic reaction, a reaction
to medication, or an internal cause. Seek
medical attention if a blistering rash
affects the skin around your eyes, multiple
areas in your mouth or your genitals.
5. The rash is painful: Painful rashes should
quickly be evaluated by a physician.
6. The rash is infected: If you have an
itchy rash and you scratch it, it
may become infected. Signs of an
infected rash are yellow or green
fluid, swelling, crusting, pain and
warmth in the area of the rash, or
a red streak coming from the rash.
“Rashes can come in many
forms and, depending on the cause,
take days or even weeks to heal,”
said Dr. Kroshinsky. “Rather
than treating the rash on your own, see a
board-certified dermatologist for the proper
diagnosis and treatment.”

and paperhanger apprentices, as announced
by the New York State Department of Labor.
Applications can be obtained, in person only,
from District Council #9, 45-15 36th Street,

at the Armory’s shelter. “They should be on Rikers Island or in
Manhattan Psychiatric Center,” Walsh said.
“That shelter there has no program whatsoever
to help people — they just turn them loose in
the neighborhood.”
According to the city’s Department of
Homeless Services (DHS), onsite programs do
exist for men staying at the Fort Washington
Men’s Shelter, including individual and group
counseling as well as case management.
And despite the uptick in neighborhood
complaints over the past few months, a DHS
spokesperson said there have been no changes
to the shelter’s operating procedures in that
time frame, nor an increase in the number of
residents at the shelter.
The man who attacked Walsh, 53-year-old
Aaron Kaalund, has a lengthy police record,
including three terms in state prison for crimes
including attempted robbery, grand larceny
and attempted sale of a controlled substance.
He was last released from prison in 2002.
Prior to his altercation with Walsh,
Kaalund had been hovering around Coogan’s
outdoor seating area that same day, bothering
customers and forcefully asking them for
cash, according to restaurant employees.
Kaalund later returned and approached
Walsh, who was chatting with people outside.
Walsh said that Kaalund threatened him after
the Coogan’s owner declined to give him
money.
Surveillance video from the scene shows
that Kaalund shoved Walsh, who said that
the push was violent and meant to injure.
“I think he was aiming for my solar plexus,”
explained Walsh.
The incident took
place on July 23rd.
“I was caught off guard,” he said. “And my
next reaction is survival.”
After Kaalund’s shove, video shows that
Walsh immediately went into a fighting
stance. Kaalund did the same, and punched
Walsh in the face.
The two men continued to scuffle until
onlookers intervened and broke up the tussle.
Walsh, who is 68 years old, said he was not
expecting to engage in fisticuffs.
“I’m an Army veteran, and I have the
confidence to defend myself,” he remarked.
“But that’s not something I’m proud of having
to do.”
After the attack outside Coogan’s, Kaalund
was arrested at the Fort Washington Men’s
Shelter. He was later arraigned on felony
assault charges and held on bail at Rikers
Island.
He is due back in court on September
8, according to the Manhattan District
Attorney’s office.
Though he could have been seriously hurt,
Walsh expressed compassion for his attacker.
“I consider the guy a victim as much as
me,” stated Walsh.
He said Kaalund has been let down by the
city’s failure to provide sufficient programs to
aid homeless individuals, and to rehabilitate
those who are prone to violence.
“To me, it shows the breakdown in the
system,” Walsh commented. “And it’s the
system that’s guilty — not those people inside
the shelter, and not us as a community.”
Walsh said he was moved by the tragic
shooting of nine members of a Charleston,
S.C. church in June, and how relatives of the
victims forgave the gunman.
“We could all learn a lot from that,” he
remarked.
On August 6, Mayor Bill de Blasio
announced that the city would provide $22
million in funding to boost mental health
services, primarily to connect those who
are prone to violence with much-needed
resources.
The plan would add additional staff and
peace officers to the city’s homeless shelters,
and is intended to foster greater collaboration
between the police and DHS.
Yet Walsh expressed skepticism that the
plan would be implemented wisely enough
to improve the issues surrounding the Fort
Washington Men’s Shelter.
“I don’t think it’s a question of money —
it’s a question of administrative efficiency and
having functional programs,” he said.
For now, Walsh is set to put the recent
incident behind him and focus on plans to
commemorate Coogan’s 30th anniversary.
As he did when he opened the place in
1985, Walsh sees the restaurant as a vital part
of the community.
“We were integrated from the first day we
opened, and that was a very important thing,”
he remarked. “It was Dominican, African
American, Caribbean, Jewish, Irish, whoever.
Everybody always felt relaxed there, and
nobody ever felt like an outsider.”

reflect the group’s comprehensive array of
services.
The network’s centers offer affordable
or free healthcare services, and all patients,
regardless of their immigration status or
financial situation, are welcome.
“We don’t turn patients away,” said
Southerland. “They can come here regardless
of their ability to pay.”
The Helen B. Atkinson Health Center has
served the Harlem community since 1966,
and it provides services within the fields
of prenatal and postpartum care, dentistry,
gynecology, pediatrics, podiatry, HIV
education, and family planning services,
among others.
“It is a one-stop shop,” said
Southerland. “Patients can
get all the health services they
need.”
Other
organizations
present
included
the
American Cancer Society,
the Harlem Dowling West
Side Center for Children and
Family Services, the Upper
Manhattan Mental Health
Center, and Carnegie Hill
Endoscopy.
Angelo
Wong,
a
representative for the latter,
distributed information on
colon cancer.
“It affects so many people.
A lot of people may not have
symptoms,” he said, adding
that early detection was
crucial.
“It is one of those cancers that can get cured
if found early,” he said, advising that those 50
years and older be tested regularly.
For Wilma Banks, the manager of Upper
Manhattan Mental Health Center Inc., the fair
afforded a significant outreach opportunity on
a vital, and often misunderstood, topic.
“We provide mental health services to
the Harlem community,” said Banks. Local
residents, she added, were often misinformed
as to the viable healthcare and social services
they could access.
“[It is why] our job is to go out and share
information.”
