From policy to life at home,
Lourdes McManus gets personal
about her husband, their kids –and
herself

It’s 11:28 a.m. and my oneon-one exclusive interview with
Lourdes Zevallos McManus is
about to begin. I walk up the
wooden stairs, eager to meet
this Peruvian beauty who stands
behind one of the most honorable
men in San Antonio. As I step into
the conference room she stands
to greet me with a sweet smile
and warm handshake. It didn’t
take long to realize that the wife
of William McManus, Chief of
Police was not only beautiful, but
smart, humble and one hundred
percent in love with her husband.
He may be Chief of Police, but
she is definitely chief of his heart
and home.
Between balancing motherhood,
her life as a wife and individuality, Lourdes is quick to admit that
she’s still trying to figure it all out.
With two lovely girls and a boy
who wants to be “just like pappy,”
she is proud to call the Alamo City
her home. She keeps her Latin
roots close to her heart and with
her mom living next door she has
a strong support system both at
home and in the community.
I began seeking as much information as I could about Lourdes,
but soon discovered that she had
been playing hide-and-seek with
San Antonio.
LP: Mrs. McManus, thank you
so much for coming out to La
Prensa to meet with me. It truly
is an honor to be able to share a
glimpse of who you are with San
Antonio. So let me ask, when you
met your husband did you know
that he would one day become
chief of police?
LM: No. You know, when I
met him, he was a captain. He had
a 9 to 5 job –it was great. I never
saw it coming!
LP: What caught your attention
about him?
LM: We had a lot of the same
things in common, and we just
clicked. I remember telling my
mother, “Mom, I found a great
guy. We’re friends, though. We
could never get married… There’s
no chance of that. He’s dating
someone, I’m dating someone
–there’s no way.” And she said,
“You know, you never said that
about any guy you dated –that
you could see yourself married
to him.”
LP: How did you two meet?
LM: We were actually introduced by a mutual friend of ours.
We started talking and we hit it off.
We were friends for a long time,
which I think is the base for any
relationship. It was good timing.
LP: A lot of people say, “You
just know.” Was that the case
for you?
LM: Again, I think it was because we were friends first –we
weren’t trying to impress each
other. We were ourselves, we
would see each other in the gym

Cuidado con préstamos de día de
pago durante la temporada festiva

Los tejanos lo hacen todo
grande, y la época navideña no
es excepción. Pero la economía
continúa aún floja. Las tasas de
desempleo en el estado no han
dado señales de mejora. Beneficiarios del Seguro Social no
recibirán un aumento de costo de
vida en el 2010. Entonces, ¿qué
puede hacer una persona con
poco dinero durante esta época
tan festiva y costosa?
Recientemente AARP Texas
tuvo la oportunidad de hablar
con Preston White, un jubilado

residente de Killeen, que necesitaba dinero con urgencia para
la familia de su hija. Menos de
una hora después de acudir a un
negocio de préstamos de día de
pago y títulos de automóviles,
él pudo obtener 4 000 dólares
utilizando como garantía de su
camión. White pronto se dio
cuenta de lo que el personal del
negocio no había dejado claro:
Al final de 30 días, o bien podía
pagar la totalidad del préstamo
(que ascendía a más de 5 000
dólares después de comisiones e
intereses) o pagar 1 300 dólares
para salvar a su camión de ser
embargado por 30 días adiciona-
les. Esta cuota de 1300 dólares
se cobraría cada 30 días hasta
que la totalidad del préstamo, sus
intereses y todos los honorarios
se pagaran en su totalidad.
Como muchos otros antes que
él, White sin querer había caído
en el mundo de préstamos abusivos de día de pago y de títulos de
automóvil, que atrapan al consumidor en un ciclo vicioso de
deudas. Incapaz de pagar la cantidad correspondiente al volver

¡Sacude lo que no te
conviene!

Estamos llegando al fin del
año y seguramente trazarás
varios propósitos para el 2010.
Quiero alentarte a que una de
tus resoluciones sea: ¡sacudir
el “chen”! Se trata de una
tradición china. En el lenguaje
chino el “polvo” y lo “viejo”
se pronuncian igual: “chen”.
Según esta creencia oriental,
para recibir bendiciones en el
año nuevo hay que hacer una
limpieza a fondo y tirar aquello
que no sirve.
El acto de limpiar simboliza
la destrucción de lo viejo para
construir lo nuevo. Para que
puedas empezar el nuevo año
con el pie derecho, emplea esta
tradición china. ¡Y no me refiero a que limpies los estantes
o las telarañas en las esquinas
de tu casa! Estoy hablando de
una limpieza emocional. Sal de
lo que no te permite superarte.
Deshazte de todo lo que no
te conviene para que le abras
campo a tu felicidad.
Te pregunto: ¿Qué es lo que
sigues sujetando pero sabes
que debes soltar?, ¿Cuál es la
situación que te está perjudicando y necesitas ponerle fin?,
¿En qué área de tu vida debes
hacer un cambio pero lo estas
ignorando?
Hasta que no sueltes lo que
no te beneficia, no abrirás espacio para que lleguen nuevas
y mejores oportunidades. Tal
vez has pensado que la vida ha
sido injusta porque en muchas
ocasiones no has recibido lo
que tú anhelabas, pero lo cierto
es que Dios no te puede hacer
entrega de un regalo si tus manos están ocupadas. Él espera a
que las vacíes y estés listo para
recibir. Primero tienes que salir
de lo que no te trae provecho, y
es entonces cuando obtienes lo
que está guardado para ti.
Finaliza con esa relación
que te oprime, para que abras
las puertas al verdadero amor.
Libérate de ese trabajo que te
deprime para que llegue uno
en el que disfrutes usando tus
talentos. Renuncia a ese vicio
del cigarro o alcohol, para que
puedas y disfrutar de más salud
y energía. Es el momento de
acabar con tus complejos e inseguridades para que tu belleza
pueda irradiar.
Despeja el camino para que
el 2010 te traiga todas las bendiciones que están esperando
por ti. Toma la decisión de
hacer cambios que mejoren la
calidad de tu vida. Aprendamos
de la cultura china, ¡es hora de
sacudir el “chen”!

operate on a different schedule
during the holidays?
Answer:
No, there will not be a change
in our office hours during the
holidays. The offices are open
Monday through Friday, from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All SSA offices
will be closed on Christmas and
New Years Day. If you are one
of the many individuals who may
have to conduct business with
Social Security over the holiday
season, it is good to know that
you can use our online services
without having to worry about
opening or closing times. That
means you can handle your holiday shopping and planning with
one less time constraint or worry.
Plus, that is one less “line” to wait
in. The services available online
at www.socialsecurity.gov will
save you time. Social Security’s
online services are available each
work day from 4 a.m. until mid-
night; on Saturdays, from 4 a.m.
until 10 p.m.; and on Sundays
from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. The
online services are available even
on federal holidays — including Christmas and New Year’s
Day — from 4 a.m. until 10 p.m.
So if you have Social Security
business to take care of during
the holidays, our online services

Ingreso Suplementario aumentarán automáticamente todos
los años solamente si se registra
un aumento en el Índice de
Precios del Consumidor para
trabajadores en áreas urbanas y
oficinistas (CPI-W, sus siglas
en inglés) del Departamento de
Estadísticas del Trabajo, desde
el tercer trimestre del año pasado
hasta el tercer trimestre del año
en curso. Este año no hubo un
aumento en el CPI-W desde el
tercer trimestre del 2008 hasta
el tercer trimestre del 2009. Sin
embargo, el Presidente Obama
ha hecho un llamado al Congreso
para que pase una legislación
extendiendo $250 adicionales al
pago de recuperación económica

The biggest single vote to
be cast on health care reform
is taking place right now. Not
in the halls of Congress or in
some smoke-filled back room.
Not in the Oval Office. Not in
the media.
No, the single most important
vote on health care is being cast
in, of all places, Beijing.
As the New York Times
reported recently, Chinese officials are questioning American officials about health care
reform in the U.S. As the Times
wrote, “The Chinese were not
particularly interested in the
public option or universal health
care....They wanted to know,
in painstaking detail, how the
health care plan would affect
the [U.S.] deficit.”
Why the Chinese would be so
interested in our deficit? Well,
for all intents and purposes,
China is the official banker of
the United States government.
China is the number one foreign holder of U.S. Treasury
securities.
And, as the Times reports,
“like any banker, they wanted
evidence that the United States
had a plan to pay them back.”
Somehow, I doubt the Presi-
dent had any such evidence
to give them in Beijing this
week.
The Chinese are nothing if not
clever. One investment banker
told me that they had converted
all of their debt from 30-year
maturity to one year. The hard
questions they are asking right
now are about how much the
health care bill will raise the
deficit. And make no mistake,
if the Chinese decide not to
continue financing our debt,
the dollar could drop through
the floor. America could have
a huge financial crisis.
Isn’t it ironic that the communist Chinese are more concerned
about the cost of socialized
medicine than the President and
the Congress? That the Chinese
communists are more concerned
about the U.S. government
printing money like it’s going
out of style than we are?
If that isn’t a wake-up call to
the politicians, the media, and
to the American public, I don’t
know what it’s going to take.
Look at your own personal
spending over the past year.
Have you cut back on expenditures because of the recession?
Have you put off purchases—
even ones that a year ago you
might have thought to be essential? I know I have.

Cuando hablamos de las guerras de Irak, de Afganistán y de
la que el presidente venezolano
Hugo Chávez quiere iniciar contra
Colombia, da la impresión que estamos hablando de algo inevitable,
como si se tratara de una fuerza
superior a cualquier cosa.
Por eso esta pregunta es fundamental.
“¿Hay una manera de liberar a
los seres humanos de la fatalidad
de la guerra?”
La pregunta fue enviada en una
carta por el célebre científico Albert
Einstein al creador del sicoanálisis,
Sigmund Freud. De ahí surgió un
maravilloso intercambio de opiniones. Eso ocurrió en 1932. Pero sus
críticas a la incompetencia humana
para detener la guerra son igual de
válidas hoy.
Empecemos con Chávez, quien
es, sin duda, uno de los personajes
más vistosos y peligrosos de nuestra América. Hace unas semanas le
dijo a sus fuerzas armadas: “No perdamos un día en nuestra principal
misión; prepararnos para la guerra
y ayudar al pueblo a prepararse para
la guerra”.
Chávez cree que la presencia
de soldados norteamericanos en
siete bases colombianas es una
amenaza para su país y para él.
Pero en realidad ya había soldados
norteamericanos en Colombia
desde mucho antes que Chávez
llegara al poder.
Además, la verdadera amenaza
es Chávez al darle refugio en Venezuela a los rebeldes de las Fuerzas
Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) y al apoyarlas dentro de territorio colombiano. Esto,
más la alianza con Irán para crear
material nuclear en Venezuela, la
compra multimillonaria de armamento y la tendencia del presidente
venezolano a meterse en los asuntos
internos de otros países, hacen de
Chávez el principal proponente de
la guerra en el continente.
¿Por qué buscar la guerra con
Colombia? Chávez, antes que
nada, es un soldado. El diálogo y
la diplomacia no son su fuerte. Las
armas sí.
Un conflicto con Colombia,
siguiendo la fórmula castrista, le
ayuda a Chávez a cerrar filas dentro
de Venezuela, explotando el nacionalismo, y distrae a los venezolanos
de sus verdaderos problemas:
falta de agua, electricidad, una
persistente pobreza a pesar de los
enormes recursos petroleros, y una
rampante violencia e impunidad.
Freud le decía a Einstein en una
carta que para evitar las guerras es
necesario tener “una actitud cultural
(antibélica) y el fundado temor a las
consecuencias de la guerra futura”.
Chávez no tiene esa actitud. Su
educación es para pelear y matar.
Chávez está en busca de su guerra.
Y no le importa destruir a Venezuela en su afán a la egomanía.
El ex presidente norteamericano,
George W. Bush, también buscó
su guerra y la encontró en Irak.
Funcionarios británicos han confirmado que Bush tenía intenciones
de atacar Irak incluso antes de los
actos terroristas del 11 de septiembre del 2001.
Finalmente, Bush lanzo el ataque
a Irak en marzo del 2003 basado en
argumentos falsos. El líder iraquí,
Saddam Hussein, nunca tuvo nada
que ver con los actos terroristas
que mataron 3,000 norteamerica-
nos, ni tenía armas de destrucción
masiva.
No importó. Bush invadió Irak y
perdió el mundo. Y lejos de hacer de
Estados Unidos un país más seguro,
generó mucho odio e, irónicamente,
multiplicó las amenazas terroristas
contra los norteamericanos. Bush,
como Chávez, tampoco tuvo una
“actitud cultural antibélica”, ni supo
medir las consecuencias negativas
de la guerra.
Y ahora le toca al actual presidente estadounidense, Barack
Obama, cambiar el rumbo y ser el
presidente de la paz, no el presidente de la guerra. En su campaña
electoral dijo que prefería la diplomacia y el diálogo a la fuerza.
Incluso propuso hablar con los
enemigos de Estados Unidos.
Pero Obama no ha podido frenar
la inercia de un país involucrado
aún en dos guerras y con una larga
historia bélica.
Sí, Obama ya le puso fecha a la
salida de las tropas norteamericanas
de Irak. Pero Estados Unidos sigue
atorado en Afganistán. Enviar
más tropas ahí sólo prolongará el
conflicto, los muertos y los actos
terroristas. ¿Por qué no salirse de
Afganistán?
Tiene que existir una alternativa
distinta a la guerra. ¿Dónde está?
¿Quién se atreve a pensarla? No la
escucho en ningún lado. Washington está mudo.
La guerra es el fracaso: de la
diplomacia, del diálogo, de la
inteligencia humana. Ya hace 77
años Einstein y Freud se quejaban
de nuestra incompetencia para
detener el impulso de destruir y
matar. Y está claro que nada hemos
aprendido desde entonces.

también portará 24 personas
que irán sentadas a lo largo de la
pared “Wall of Names”, la cual
fue inspirada por el Memorial
Nacional de Donantes ubicado
en Richmond, Virginia. Las 24
personas que irán paseando en la
carroza son recipientes de trasplantes y familiares de donantes
fallecidos.
Cada año en los Estados Unidos hay más de 50,000 personas
que tiene su vista restaurada por
medio de un trasplante de cornea
y cien miles más son ayudados
por medio de estudios importantes para encontrar curas para
otro tipo de enfermedades que
causen la perdida de vista.
La mamá de Jaslynn explica
que decidió donar las corneas de
su hija para ayudar a quienes lo
necesitaban. “Fue una decisión
que hicimos en su momento por
razón de ayudar, solo lo hicimos
por ayudar, y eso nos da mucha
paz y mucha satisfacción…mi
pequeñita se fue al cielo el siete
de enero de 2005”.

American Academy Of Ophthalmology announces
new drive for thousands to get diabetic eye exam
(NAPSA)-Diabetes causes
more new cases of legal
blindness among working-age
Americans than any other disease. If diabetics are monitored
regularly by their ophthalmologist, this vision loss is almost
always avoidable.
Yet, tragically, more than
half of all people living with
diabetes do not get the recommended annual dilated eye
exam. As the number of people
with type 2 diabetes rises in the
U.S., the CDC projects that the
number of adults with diabetic
retinopathy will double by the
year 2050. Yet 90 percent of
diabetic eye disease can be prevented simply by proper regular
examinations and treatment and
by controlling blood sugar.
This November, during Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness
Month, the American Academy
of Ophthalmology (Academy)
through its EyeSmart(tm) campaign, is reminding the public
that an annual dilated eye
exam can help prevent vision
loss in people with diabetes.
To promote awareness of the
need for an annual eye exam,
the Academy has launched
EyeSmart: EyeCommitted, a
social media campaign to encourage people with diabetes
to pledge to get an annual eye
exam.
“Diabetes can have a devas-
tating impact on vision, but the
good news is that regular dilated eye exams by an ophthalmologist and timely treatment,
if needed, can save vision for
the vast majority of diabetics,”
said David W. Parke II, M.D.,
executive vice president and
CEO of the Academy. “That is
why we’re urging people with
diabetes to get EyeCommitted.
By taking charge of their eye
health, Americans can greatly
reduce their risk of losing their
sight from diabetes.”
The EyeCommitted campaign, which will be promoted
through the power of social
media channels, will include
an interactive pledge application that:
• Encourages visitors to take
the EyeCommitted pledge to
have an annual eye exam;
• Allows users to share the
pledge and campaign information with friends and family;
• Features important diabetic
eye disease information and a
new video that tells the compelling stories of two patients
with diabetic retinopathy;
and
• Allows users to post the
application onto their preferred
social media sites.
For each pledge, the Academy will commit another $1 to
its diabetic eye health education efforts.
Ninety percent of diabetic eye disease can be prevented simply by proper regular examinations
and treatment and by controlling blood sugar.

The EyeCommitted campaign comes at a time when
there is a documented rise in
type 2 diabetes rates among
Americans, particularly among
the young. An estimated 23.6
million Americans have type
2 diabetes, but nearly one-
quarter are unaware of it.
African-Americans and people
of Hispanic heritage are more
likely to have diabetes.
“As ophthalmologists, we
are concerned that the trend
toward younger age at diag-
nosis will mean that people
will have to manage their eye
health closely for decades,
including through their peak
work years,” said Dr. Parke.
“That’s why it is critical for
people with type 2 diabetes to
get an eye exam as soon after
their diagnosis as possible
and then annually thereafter.”
For people with type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile
diabetes, the Academy recommends that the first dilated eye
exam should take place within
three to five years of initial
diagnosis and then annually
thereafter.

and we’d go run. In D.C., we
worked close by so we crossed
paths quite a bit and we’d go out
for lunch. All my friends would
say, “Oh! Who’s that?” And I’d
say, “a friend, just a friend.”
LP: How did he propose?
LM: It was my birthday. He put
together a little birthday gathering
with a few good friends, 10 to 12 of
us were there… and that’s where
he popped the question. Because
it was already a special occasion,
I had no idea it was going to happen.
LP: How long have you been
married?
LM: 12 years.
LP: What’s the most challenging part about being married to the
chief of police?
LM: Probably balancing our
schedules because I know that
at the last minute he might have
something that he has to show up
to, and that’s okay. A lot of times
he’ll take one of our children and I
think that’s great because they get
to see what dad’s doing.
LP: What do you like most
about your husband?
LM: Well he’s good looking
(laughs)! To me he’s a good looking guy. This guy… he cannot
look bad!
LP: How do you handle having
a husband that, on top of being
handsome, is a local celebrity and
Chief of Police?
LM: It’s tough! I’ll never forget this… I was in Minneapolis
and there was a newspaper that
had him on the cover and it said
something like, “Hot New Chief”
and here I had just delivered a baby
two months ago. I was telling
myself, “I have to hit that gym so
hard because I need to look good
next to this man!”
LP: It must put a lot of pressure…
LM: Yeah, it puts a lot of pressure –especially since there’s a big
age difference between us. He’s
16 years older than me and you’d
never know.

LP: When do you have time as
husband and wife with his career
aside?
LM: That’s tough, that’s very
tough because most of the things
we go to are work related. But
we’ll have a get together with
another couple or with friends of
our children at school.
LP: What are the perks about
being married to the Chief of
Police?
LM: I wish I had a lot of the
perks that he has (laughs)! What’s
nice is we’ll be invited to many
events that will benefit our whole
family… a nice show, a nice function. You should ask me what I
don’t like (laughs)!
LP: And what is that? What
don’t you like?
LM: I don’t like all the attention. It would be nice to be treated
like anybody else because we are
like anybody else. I just wish that
people knew that he’s just like
anybody else and he makes sure
that his kids know that. He’ll tell
them, “I’m chief of police today,
but at some point I won’t be.”
He’s grateful for the response that
he gets from the community. He
loves people coming up to him
–people will call his office and talk
to him. He puts a different style
to the city.
LP: Name one thing that people
may not know about Chief McManus.
LM: He’s a very quiet individual, very private. You see him
on T.V. and you think otherwise.
He’s very genuine –what you see is
what you get. He’s not trying to put
on a show or anything. He’s also
a great cook. He loves to smoke
brisket, rotisserie chicken… He
loves the spiciness of everything.
That’s his out –it’s where he relaxes. He likes everything informal
and relaxed. If anybody comes into
our house he wants them to come
in and feel at home. Here’s something else no one knows about
him… He loves UFC. That’s his
favorite thing!
LP: He’s on the news almost
every day. Do you watch him?

LM: Yes, he’ll call me to say,
“I can’t make it home to put the

kids to sleep, but I’ll be on T.V. if
you guys want to say ‘goodnight.’”
It’s fun but it’s not always positive
stuff, sometimes there are negative things and he accepts that, he
knows that nothing’s perfect.
LP: How do you cope with
having a husband that has a job
that entitles so much responsibility
and danger?
LM: I leave it all in the hands of
God. I’m a firm believer in that.
I’d tell Bill, “If it’s a job for us, it
will work out smoothly. God has
a plan.” And it’s always worked
out smoothly.
LP: How does he separate family time from work?
LM: That’s a challenge. If
there’s something going on, it will
be on the news. So I let Bill talk
when he wants to talk. He’s had
to deal with it all day and I just let
him come home and enjoy being
home, having his space.
LP: So does dad get to participate in any of the kids’ activities
as well?
LM: Yes, he actually does karate
with our son. Right now my son is
doing a lot of no-contact stuff, but
he’s been showing him the stuff on
UFC and I’ll tell him, “Don’t show
him too much, I don’t want him to
go that route!” But karate is fine;
he needs to learn self-defense, but
not the other stuff!
LP: Are you part of any committee or board?
LM: No. All the work is at my
kid’s school –anything that has to
do with them.
LP: So if he were here right
now, how would he describe
you?
LM: He’d say I’m very independent. I take control of everything (laughs). Everything runs
smoothly in the house.
LP: It sounds like you’re the one
with the pantalones!
LM: (Laughs) We both wear
them at certain times! He’d also
say that I’m understanding. I think
that comes from having known
him for so long and having different jobs that has lead up to that.
LP: If there were one thing you
wanted San Antonio to know about
you, what would it be?
LM: That I love this city. I
think this city has been very kind
and very welcoming to us, and I
consider it my home. We’ve lived
here for three and a half years, and
I feel the most comfortable here.
We’ve been to Ohio, we’ve been
to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and for
the longest time I considered Virginia my home –I left a lot of good
friends that I still keep in touch
with. But here… it’s just been a
very welcoming crowd and not just
because of Bill’s job or anything
like that –it’s just truly genuine
people. I love that small town feel.
It’s a big city but everybody knows
everybody.
LP: Name one thing that not
many people know about you.
LM: I’m pretty much an open
book. I love working out. I think
in my other life I would’ve been a
gym owner or an aerobics instructor or something like that. I’m very
shy. I don’t like to get in front of
crowds, and it’s funny because
Bill –he’s a very quiet person, but
because of his job he’s forced to
be open. Me, on the other hand, I
shy away from the camera.
LP: What are some things you
have done in your life that you are
most proud of?
LM: Probably having done
three moves with children. I was
pregnant each time we went to
the next job. That was really hard,
especially when school was into
play because I had to balance
out everything. I had a lot on my
plate, and now I look back and
think “Wow, how did I do that?”
I mean, the boxes were coming in
and I had to nurse!
LP: What makes you feel secure
and safe in life?
LM: Well being married to
him for one (laughs)! Having my
family ties. I feel like our family is
so strong, and that makes me feel
very secure. We’re all healthy. I
feel blessed to have my mother
with me. In Peru, family is very
important and I feel the same way
here and with a strong family and
strong neighbors and friends I feel
very secure and safe.
LP: What would your ideal
vacation be?
LM: My ideal vacation would
be to go somewhere where he
could just get a fax and just get the
reports on what’s been going on
during the day, because he loves
to know what’s going on. We did
it one time. We went to Hawaii, we
had one child and he said, “They
have to have a fax or something
so I can know what’s going on.”
He’s gotta know what’s going on
(laughs)!
LP: If you had an entire day to
yourself, what would you do?
LM: Oh gosh… I would start off
with a good cup of coffee at Olmos
Brook (it’s my favorite place).
I would go get my hair done
(laughs), my nails done, a good
massage…. And go and make a
good meal for a change! I feel
like I’m not that good of a cook. I
would take my time doing something like that. I’d want to surprise
my husband at the end of the day
and have him say, “Oh my gosh!
You’re not stressed today? You’re
relaxed? You cooked?!” And of
course I love to travel, that’s one
thing that with kids is really hard
to do. But that’s another thing that
I would love to do… and I like to
travel outside the U.S. because I
like to see different cultures.
LP: Are there any words of advice you’d like to give to spouses
who sometimes get lost in the roles
of their partners?
LM: Be patient and understand,
it is a job and you’re a team.

madre con todas sus cosas por
ejemplo, llevándola al médico,
ayudándola con sus medicinas,
preparando la comida para ella,
pagando sus facturas y no hay
nadie más aparte de usted hacer
esto para su mamá.
Si tiene que ir a Juárez, su
caso es un caso difícil y mi
consejo es que usted busque un
abogado que tiene experiencia y

Esta información no reemplaza una conversación con su médico acerca de su
condición médica o su tratamiento. Hable con su médico sobre EVISTA al comenzar
a usarla y en sus exámenes médicos de rutina.
¿Cuál es la información más importante que debo conocer sobre EVISTA?
Pueden ocurrir efectos secundarios graves que pongan la vida en peligro mientras
usa EVISTA. Estos incluyen coágulos de sangre y muerte debido a derrame cerebral:
• Se han informado aumentos en el riesgo de coágulos sanguíneos en las piernas
(trombosis venosa profunda) y en los pulmones (embolia pulmonar) con EVISTA. Las
mujeres que tienen, o han tenido, coágulos sanguíneos en las piernas, los
pulmones o los ojos no deben tomar EVISTA.
• Es posible que las mujeres que han tenido un ataque cardiaco o que corren riesgo
de sufrir un ataque cardiaco corran un riesgo mayor de morir a causa de un
derrame cerebral cuando toman EVISTA.
1. Antes de comenzar a usar EVISTA, informe a su médico si ha tenido coágulos
sanguíneos en las piernas, los pulmones o los ojos, un derrame o un mini-derrame

¿Qué es EVISTA?
EVISTA es un tipo de medicamento disponible con receta llamado Modulador
Selectivo de los Receptores de Estrógeno (SERM, por sus siglas en inglés). EVISTA
es para mujeres después de la menopausia y tiene más de un uso.
• Osteoporosis: EVISTA trata y previene la osteoporosis ayudando a fortalecer los
huesos y haciéndolos menos propensos a romperse.
• Cáncer invasivo de mama: Si tiene osteoporosis o corre un riesgo alto de tener
cáncer de mama, EVISTA puede usarse para reducir la probabilidad de tener
cáncer invasivo de mama. EVISTA no evitará totalmente la probabilidad de tener
cáncer de mama. El médico puede estimar su riesgo de tener cáncer de mama
preguntándole sobre sus factores de riesgo, lo que incluye:
• su edad (envejecer).
• historial familiar de cáncer de mama (madre, hermana o hija).
• historial de biopsia de mama, en particular una biopsia anormal.

• Si ha tenido coágulos sanguíneos en las piernas, los pulmones o los ojos, si ha
tenido un derrame o un mini-derrame cerebral (ataque isquémico transitorio) o un
tipo delatido cardíaco irregular (fibrilación auricular).
• Si ha tenido cáncer de mama. EVISTA no se ha estudiado a cabalidad en mujeres
con historial de cáncer de mama.
• Si tiene problemas del hígado o del riñón.
• Si ha usado estrógeno en el pasado y tuvo elevación excesiva de los triglicéridos
(un tipo de grasa en la sangre).
• Si está embarazada, planifica quedar embarazada o está lactando. (Véase “¿Quién
no debe usar EVISTA?”)
Informe a su médico sobre todos los medicamentos que usa, incluidos medicamentos
con o sin receta, vitaminas y suplementos a base de hierbas. Conozca los medicamentos
que usa. Mantenga una lista y muéstresela al médico y al farmacéutico cada vez que
reciba un medicamento nuevo. Especialmente, informe al médico si usa*:
• Warfarina (Coumadin®, Jantoven®)
Si está usando warfarina u otros anticoagulantes coumarínicos, puede que el médico
tenga que realizar una prueba de sangre cuando comienza a usar EVISTA por primera
vez o si tiene que suspender su uso. Los nombres que se dan a esta prueba incluyen:
“tiempo de protrombina”, “PT” o “razón normalizada internacional” (INR, por sus
siglas en inglés). Puede que el médico tenga que ajustar la dosis de warfarina o de
otro anticoagulante coumarínico.
• Colestiramina
• Estrógeno
EVISTA no debe usarse con colestiramina ni con estrógenos.
¿Cómo debo usar EVISTA?
• Tome EVISTA exactamente como le indique el médico.
• Siga usando EVISTA por el tiempo que se lo recete el médico. No se sabe por cuánto
tiempo deberá usar EVISTA para reducir la probabilidad de cáncer invasivo de mama.
• Es importante obtener la repetición de su receta a tiempo para que no se quede
sin medicamento.

¿Qué debo evitar si estoy usando EVISTA?
• Permanecer quieta por mucho tiempo (como, por ejemplo, durante un viaje
prolongado o en cama después de una cirugía) puede aumentar el riesgo de coágulos
de sangre. EVISTA puede aumentar este riesgo. Si va a estar inmovilizada por
mucho tiempo, hable con el médico sobre formas de reducir el riesgo de coágulos
de sangre. Durante viajes largos, debe moverse por el área periódicamente. Debe
suspender el uso de EVISTA, por lo menos, 3 días antes de una cirugía programada
o si piensa que va a estar quieta por tiempo prolongado. Debe comenzar a usar
EVISTA de nuevo cuando regrese a sus actividades normales.
• Algunos medicamentos no deben usarse con EVISTA (véase ¿“Qué debo
informarle al médico antes de usar EVISTA?”).
¿Cuáles son los posibles efectos secundarios de EVISTA?

¿Qué más debo saber sobre EVISTA?
• No use EVISTA para prevenir enfermedades cardíacas, ataques del corazón o
derrames cerebrales.
• Para obtener el calcio y la vitamina D que necesita, puede que su médico le aconseje
cambios en la dieta y/o tomar suplementos de calcio y vitamina D. Es posible que
su médico le sugiera otras formas de ayudar a tratar o prevenir la osteoporosis,
además de tomar EVISTA y obtener el calcio y la vitamina D que necesita, como
hacer ejercicio regularmente, dejar de fumar y tomar menos bebidas con alcohol.
• Las mujeres que tienen “sofocones” pueden usar EVISTA. Sin embargo, EVISTA
no trata los sofocones y, en algunas mujeres, puede causarlos. (Véase “¿Cuáles
son los posibles efectos secundarios de EVISTA?”)
• No se ha encontrado que EVISTA cause sensibilidad o agrandamiento de las
mamas. Si usted nota cambios en las mamas, debe comunicarse con el médico
para descubrir la causa. Antes de comenzar a usar EVISTA, y mientras lo usa, debe
hacerse exámenes de las mamas y mamografías según le indique el médico. Como

games at the
Alamodome

What better present to receive
than a state football title.
As we enter late December, I
am still writing about football but
it comes in the form of upcoming state titles games and only
because they are being played in
San Antonio.
It’s just too bad that there are
no local representatives playing
in any classifications.
Austin Westlake and New
Braunfels made sure of it two
weeks ago when they defeated
sound programs from Clark and
Brandeis in the fourth round.
Westlake (13-2), in fact, is one
of four teams playing in the Alamodome on Saturday. The Chaparrals are playing the Euless Trinity
Trojans (13-2) in the Division I
game that is set to begin at 2 p.m.
The Katy Tigers (14-1) will play
the Abilene Eagles (14-0) in the
Division II game at 7 p.m.
And before you hand the title to
Katy, just remember that it was in
2007 that Abilene beat Southlake
Carroll in a building that was supposed to be the Dragons’ home
away from home – the former
Texas Stadium, in Irving. What
Abilene did was snap Carroll’s
58-game win streak of beating a
Texas team.
This same program is going to
be playing in our backyard against
a Katy program that has won six
championships and it’s looking
for a third straight.
Katy had a tough time in its
semifinal game but beat New
Braunfels, 14-6 and Abilene won
against Klein, 29-21.
The other game pits a Trinity
program that won its last state
title in this very stadium in 2007.
But it happened against Converse
Judson in a close 13-10 game. In
fact, this is the first time in three
state title appearances that Trinity
will play against someone other
than Judson. The Trojans beat
Judson, 28-14, in 2005. It was
payback of sorts when Trinity
lost to the Rockets by a 52-0 score
in 1992.
Westlake is playing in its fourth
state title game since 2000. Westlake played twice in the title game
in the 1990s. However, the 1996
season is the only time that the
Chaps have won the ultimate
prize. That year they were led
by Drew Brees, who now plays
professionally for the New Orleans Saints.
To arrive to this game, Westlake beat Katy Cinco Ranch,
42-27 and Trinity was able to slip
past Round Rock Stony Point,
35-28.

Peyton Manning wouldn’t
mind a stress-free second half
once in awhile.
But his Indianapolis Colts keep
on winning ... and winning ... and
winning.
The ninth and final lead change
of the game — with 5 minutes, 23
seconds remaining — gave the
Colts an NFL-record 23 consecutive regular-season victories and
kept Indy unbeaten this season.
“That just means we’re screwing up enough early to have to
come back,” said Peyton Manning, who completed his first 13
passes and finished 23-of-30 for
308 yards and four touchdowns.
It marked his 21st four-TD pass
game as a pro, tying him for
second with Dan Marino on the
all-time NFL list.
“There is no panic. I will say
that. Guys are saying, ‘here’s
what we have to do ... let’s go do
it. But I don’t like not being able
to put the game away when we
have the chance.”
Manning connected with Reggie Wayne for a 65-yard touchdown pass with less than six
minutes to play, to beat the playoff-hungry Jacksonville Jaguars,
35-31. Colts coach Jim Caldwell
called the game “an old-fashioned
shootout at the OK Corral” in
front of a season-high 63,753
at the Jacksonville Municipal
Stadium.
There are still two regularseason games to be played in the
Colts’ (14-0) dual quest with the
Saints (13-0) to match New England’s 16-0 regular-season record
of 2007, but the victory gave the
Colts one NFL record: they’ve
rallied seven times from fourthquarter deficits to win.
The victory on a short week
gives the Colts 10 days before
playing the New York Jets at
home Dec. 27. It’s also plenty of
time for debate — about being
unbeaten and the merits of resting players — to unfold, since
the AFC South was clinched
long ago.
“This is not a lobbying setup,”
Manning said. “We don’t have
one guy in the locker room who
doesn’t want to play. But whatever Coach Caldwell says, we
will follow.”
Immediately after the victory,
Caldwell wasn’t ready to discuss
a strategy for the Jets game.

“Right now, we’re going to enjoy this victory,” he said. “We’ve
got three days off and we’ll deal
with next week, next week.”
Said Manning: “It’s disrespectful to the team you’re playing next
to be talking about anything but
playing that game.”
Wayne, who caught five passes
for 132 yards (his sixth 100-yard
receiving game in his last seven
meetings with the Jaguars), is less
concerned with the process than
the outcome.

It won’t be pretty all the time but
we’re getting it done.”
It wasn’t pretty at times against
the Jaguars, and it certainly wasn’t
easy, as the home team pushed the
Colts to the edge out of sheer
desperation. Jacksonville needed
to win the game to have a reasonable chance at an AFC wild-card
berth, but now has to win out on
the road against New England
and Cleveland and hope for some
help along the way to play January football.
After the Jaguars took an early
3-0 lead, and Manning followed
with a 6-yard TD pass to Dallas Clark (seven receptions, 95
yards), the teams traded touchdowns.
The Jaguars had their usual
problems in producing a pass rush
that would muss a hair on Manning’s head, but the Colts, with
defensive ends Dwight Freeney
and Robert Mathis seeing limited
action, had their own problems
against quarterback David Garrard (23-of-40 for 223 yards
and three touchdowns) and RB
Maurice Jones-Drew (110 yards
rushing and a TD running and
receiving).
“A whale of a football game,”
said Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio,
who has lost two games to the
Colts this season by a combined
six points. “Both teams spent it
all. They emptied their buckets
out.”
Garrard, maligned most of the
season for his tendency to fumble
and take needless sacks, didn’t lay
the ball on the ground and was
nailed behind the line twice. He
used nine receivers and for a time,
the vocal fans who finally flocked
to the stadium for the team’s final
home game, thought his 13-yard
TD pass to Mike Sims-Walker
early in the fourth quarter for a
31-28 lead might stand up.
But Manning connected with
Wayne on the next possession,
after Wayne slipped rookie cornerback Derek Cox and beat the
lunging tackle attempt of safety
Reggie Nelson, who arrived to
help a step too late.
“It actually was pretty good
coverage by the Jaguars,” Manning said. “The corners were
squatting a little and Reggie
(Wayne) saw there was something
downfield. He’s a great team
player. His presence dictates a
lot of what the other team does.
It opens stuff up for other guys.
But he wants the ball because he
thinks it will help us win.”
A tragic end to Henry’s troubled life

He was Cincinnati’s best downfield wide receiver but Chris
Henry couldn’t completely run
away from the off-field trouble
that had long followed him.
He was by all accounts a
changed man, yet Henry died
Thursday from injuries suffered
in a truck accident following an
alleged domestic dispute.

he was described as “gentle” and
“a good person” by some of his
mourning teammates.
These kinds of contradictions
followed Henry throughout his
five-year NFL career. Was he the
“one-man crime wave” one of the
many judges he appeared before
labeled him? Or was he the man
who, according to many, was
slowly but surely putting his life
back together?
Henry had the chance to stage
the greatest personal turnaround
of any player who has run afoul
of NFL commissioner Roger
Goodell and his personal conduct
policy. Henry had stopped the
sociopathic behavior that earned
him 14 games worth of suspensions. Drunk driving, drug possession, alleged assault, illegal
use of a firearm – it’s all there in
the arrest records. Henry was so
out of control that he was once
released by Bengals owner Mike
Brown, who is known for having
a soft spot in his heart for talented
miscreants.
To his credit, Henry took advantage of a second chance when
re-signed in the 2008 preseason.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Henry
had reemerged as a key cog in
Cincinnati’s offense. Henry was
beginning to fulfill the athletic
potential that could have made
him a star.
According to one Bengals
source, the introverted Henry
had quit the public drinking that
triggered so much aggressiveness and recklessness in previous incidents. He became more
involved with his girlfriend and
three young children. He recently
became engaged. He stayed out
of trouble.
At age 26, Henry was finally
becoming an adult.
Or so it seemed. But as the
Tiger Woods circus has reminded
us, not even close friends or the
media know everything that goes
on with athletes behind closed
doors.
After landing on injured reserve
in early November with a wrist injury, Henry and his fiancé Loleini
Tonga returned to her hometown
of Charlotte, N.C. for wedding
planning. On Wednesday morning, local police say the two had
a spat that led to Tonga driving
away in a pickup truck and Henry
jumping inside the bed to follow.
The two continued arguing, police
said, before Henry was ejected
from the vehicle.
Those circumstances may
prompt skeptics to wonder how
much Henry had truly changed
at all. The Bengals, though, insist
he had.
“People were surprised we stood
by Chris during his problems,”
Brown said in a team-released
statement. “We knew Chris to be
different than his public persona.
To the best of his ability, Chris
reached out to the team, his friends
and family. Everyone tried to help
-- and sometimes it went awry -but Chris’ heart was always in the
right place. He was a good person
and he was on the road to doing
well in his football career.”
Added Lewis: “We had seen
Chris expand this year as both a
person and on the field. He had
grown and matured.”
The Bengals (9-4) were already
struggling to replace Henry as a
deep threat in their passing game
while gearing for a surprising
playoff run. Cincinnati now also
has to overcome the shock of losing someone who had once again
become a trusted teammate.
“Everyone makes mistakes,”
teary-eyed wide receiver Chad
Ochocinco said Thursday inside
the Cincinnati locker room. “But I
don’t see how Chris was supposed
to go already, especially when he
was on the right path.”
Whether it was truly the right path
may never be known for sure.

Maybe Kobe is kinda like Mike

For the millions of transplants
who arrive in Los Angeles from
points sane, the nutty City of Angels has lots of surprises in store
for them.
Motorists are regularly cited
for not yielding to pedestrians. I
mean, really yielding, like, until
they are safely up on the curb.
And pedestrians get ticketed for
not crossing at crosswalks. It’s a
far cry from the East Coast freefor-all, where drivers and hoofers manage to co-exist without
the city dipping its beak every
45 feet.
Though the sun shines roughly
330 days a year, there is a tanning
salon in every strip mall and a
strip mall on every corner.
A new arrival in L.A. will be
asked questions he’s never pondered before, like, “What year gas
do you use?” Huh? “You know,
87, 89 or 91?”
If you see lilacs somewhere in
a house, it means the occupant
believes that is her “prosperity
corner.”
Boxers...
There’s a reason they call it La
La Land.
But of all the head-snapping,
whiplash-inducing revelations
that have greeted me since I made
the Southland my home, none
made me yell at my car radio as
loudly as Laker fans’ insistence
on comparing Kobe Bryant to
Michael Jordan.
It started in earnest a couple of
years ago. I found the comparison
preposterous, downright embarrassing.
It was NBA blasphemy, a violation of hoop’s first commandment: You shall have no other
basketball gods before M.J.
Then Kobe won his first MVP.
Then he won a Gold Medal. Then
he won a title as The Man.
Now, with each absurd buzzerbeater, Kobe’s legend grows and
the gap between him and Jordan
— once so vast — narrows.
Is Kobe Bryant as good as Michael Jordan?
I’m not ready to say that, but I
am willing to stop yelling at my
radio when somebody else does.
Jordan won five MVPs (and
was robbed on at least two other
occasions) and six titles as the
best player on his team. When
the 2005-06 season began, Kobe
had not accomplished either feat
so much as once. He was the sidekick during Shaquille O’Neal’s
three-year title run in L.A. and
had never finished higher than
third in the MVP voting.

But a funny thing happened on
the way to the Lakers’ pedestrian
45-37 record that season. Kobe
Bryant went off. Unleashing the
full package — an assortment of
unstoppable turnarounds, lefty
finishes in traffic, 131more threepoint attempts than he had put up
in any other season, etc. — Bryant
won his first scoring title with a
35.4 points per game average.
It was the highest average for
an NBA scoring champion since,
yup, Michael Jordan rang up his
37.1 ppg in 1986-87.
On Dec. 20, 2005 Kobe did
something that had never been
done in the shot clock era: he
outscored the Dallas Mavericks
62-61 through three quarters. A
month later he dropped 81 on the
Toronto Raptors, a total achieved
by only one other player, the prodigious Wilt Chamberlain.
Anyone watching these performances would understandably
find it hard to believe that there
had ever been a better perimeter
offensive player in NBA history.
And so the conversation began. The following year Kobe
won his second scoring title and
joined Chamberlain as the only
players in NBA history to score
50 points in four straight games.
It’s one thing to post Jordanesque
numbers, but nobody is supposed
to approach Wilt.
Still, as the 2007-08 season
began, Kobe still hadn’t been an
MVP or the undisputed leader of

Done and done. He won the
MVP trophy with a 28.3 ppg/6.3
rpg/5.4 apg monster of a season
in 2008, then led the Lakers to the
title as the Finals MVP in 2009,
squeezing a Gold Medal run in
Beijing in between.
A week ago I asked John Salley, who had played with both,
to weigh in on the comparison,
fully expecting him to say, “There
never has been and there never
will be another Michael.”
But Salley viewed it as a legitimate debate, pointing out Kobe’s
relative youth (31) and the fact
that he probably has multiple
championships ahead of him.
Indeed.
No impartial observer watching the NBA this season could
honestly think any team other
than the Lakers will be lifting that
trophy in June.
The Lakers beat the Magic in
five games in the Finals last season without Andrew Bynum. The
22-year-old 7-footer is averaging
16.7 points and 8.5 rebounds a
game this season and is fifth in
the NBA in field-goal percentage
(.574). When Pau Gasol missed
the first three weeks of the season,
Bynum averaged 20 and 12.
Since Gasol (17.7 ppg and
12.7 rpg) came back, the Lakers
are 12-1.
Of course, they could easily be
10-3 in those 13 games save for
the heroics of the Kobester. Two
weeks ago he beat the Heat with
a 3-pointer at the buzzer (OK, he
banked it), and on Wednesday he
single-handedly overcame a sixpoint deficit with 1:20 left in OT
to beat the Bucks on yet another
contested buzzer-beater.
Kobe’s ability to make impossible shots at the buzzer is
positively freakish. If he gets the
ball airborne with the game on
the line, everyone in the building
thinks it’s going in. In that one
Nike commercial Jordan admitted to missing 26 game-winning
shots. Kobe may have missed as
many, but it sure seems like he
buries every one.
If — let’s face it, when — the
Lakers go back-to-back this
season, that will give Kobe five
titles, one shy of Jordan. If he adds
another selection to the All-NBA
Defensive First Team, it will
be his eighth, again one shy of
Jordan. With LeBron James and
Dwight Howard in their primes,
Kobe won’t match Jordan’s five
MVPs, but he was the best player
in the league as we passed the
quarter pole this season.
Kobe is 31. He has a whole
lot of basketball ahead of him.
Michael won three titles after he
turned 33.
Those sun-baked Los Angeles
sports fans may have begun this
debate prematurely, but — and I
can’t believe I’m saying this —
Kobe Bryant looks unstoppable in
his quest to vindicate them.
Maybe I need to revisit that
whole feng shui thing too.

Transplant becomes symbol of American Holiday Season

Each year, the holiday season
that begins with Thanksgiving
Day and runs through New Year’s
Day is a time for most U.S. Americans to contemplate their good
fortune, demonstrate compassion
and concern for one another, and
hope for peace on earth.
This time of the year is also a
time for reflection. For the past
several years, immigration has
dominated center stage across our
nation. There are those who cite
the growing negative influences
transplants are having on “their”
society, “their” economy and
“their” culture.
As we prepare to celebrate the
annual year-end holiday season
one such transplant comes to
mind: the cuetlaxochitl (kwehtlah-SOH-cheel), which has come
to symbolize the most revered
of our nation’s holidays. This
particular transplant is a native
of Central America and Mexico,
and was once part of the botanical
gardens that existed throughout
the pre-Colombian Azteca Empire. During that era, flora was

Eleven years ago, Judge Al
Alonso was elected to serve on
a criminal bench in the Bexar
County Court at Law No. 1, where
he handles mostly cases related
to the offense of driving while
intoxicated.
While serving there, Judge
Alonso soon discovered that most
defendants on probation were
testing positive for drugs or alcohol, and that our local criminal
justice system was operating as a
revolving door.
Frustrated over the ineffectiveness of our court system, the
judge shared his concerns with a
professor at the National Judicial
College. The professor introduced
him to their drug court program.
Judge Alonso began to research different drug courts. He
then found a study by American
University, outlining the 10 key
components and procedures of
drug courts, which are used by
many to establish drug courts in
different regions.
In the summer of 2001, Judge
Alonso started implementing rudimentary concepts of drug courts
into our courtroom, he immediately began to see success.
In 2002, after some training,
Judge Alonso’s ten member team
was certified by the National
Drug Court Institute, as the first
drug court in Bexar County.
The current drug court program
is a combination of the medical model, the judicial system,
and the Alcoholic Anonymous/
Narcotic Anonymous (AA/NA)
higher power program.
The program is for non-violent
offenders. The presiding judge,
under the threat of sanctions,
orders participants into substance
abuse treatment. Research indicates that the longer one is in
treatment the better the results.
Programs that last 18 months to
2 years have the most dramatic
effect.
It’s the most intense supervision that is currently in place
in our criminal justice system.
Participants are drug tested two to
three times a week, attend therapy
two to three times a week, see a
probation officer once a week,
and must appear in court every
two to three weeks for a progress status hearing. In addition
participants must attend AA/NA
meetings twice a week. Every
time a participant tests positive or
misses an appointment, a sanction
is assessed. Sanctions can range
from hours of community service,
house arrest, days in jail and up to
180 impatient treatments.
The whole concept is based on
a non adversarial team approach.
The team consists of a probation
officer, a drug court coordinator,
a treatment counselor, a prosecutor, a defense attorney, a tracking
specialist, and the judge. All the
members on the team provide
support to the participant with the
collective goal of helping them
recover. Over 90% of drug court
graduates attribute their recovery
to the higher power component of
the 12-step AA/NA program.
The cost to incarcerate a person
ranges from $20,000 to $30,000
per year, while the drug court
program costs about $2500, on
average. Many people in our jails
and prisons are non-violent offenders. Only about nine percent of
this incarcerated population ever
gets treatment. Physicians have

determined that drug and alcohol
addiction is a brain disease. If their
addiction is not treated, 95% will
relapse within 3 years of release
and most will be back in prison.
The average addicted person
commits two hundred undetected
crimes per year. When we can
help an individual in their recovery
we lower crime. It makes no sense
to incarcerate a non-violent offender who is a drug abuser when
there is a better option.
In Judge Alonso’s professional
career of 40 years in the criminal
justice field, as an attorney, including 15 years as a judge, he
has never seen a program as effective as the drug court program;
it saves lives, saves money, and

Poinsett reportedly visited a rural
church where the parishioners had
decorated the Nativity scene with
local, bright red foliage that gave
the church a “very elegant and
uncommon appearance.”
The Ambassador brought cuttings from these plants to his
South Carolina hothouses and

buena to mainstream USA. The
“poinsettia” is now commonly
recognized as a symbol of our
nation’s holiday season. Who
could have imagined this shrublike transplant with reddish leaves
(that really aren’t flowers) would
someday become the second-most
popular plant sold in the entire
USA?
To most in the U.S. it is seen
mainly in its disposable potted
state; however, in its natural en-
vironment — that includes much
of the Southwestern U.S. — la

to 10 feet tall. To Mexican,
Central American, and U.S. Latino Christians the la flor de la
noche buena remains associated
with Christmas — as it has for
centuries.
The cuetlaxochitl has come to
symbolize the holiday season,
first in Latin America and now in
the USA. Similarly, the USA has
come to symbolize a sanctuary for
those seeking equality, opportunity, and access to their aspirations!

Alegre e inolvidable concierto navideño en Living Days Adult Care Center (2603 W. Southcross). La orquesta integrada por estudiantes de 7º y 8º grado de Dwight Middel School, dirigida por el profesor Mark
Pierce, alegro el ambiente interpretando temas navideños, mientras que H-E-Buddy mascota de la cadena de supermercados H-E-B presentaba donativos de libros y rompecabezas, y a la vez complació damas
bailando al son de las suaves notas interpretadas por los juveniles músicos. “H-E-Buddy se ha visto ocupado durante estos festejos navideños. Para H-E-B es un honor poderle corresponder de esta forma al consumidor y a personas de la tercera edad que hoy disfrutan de este concierto”, dijo Meredith Baca que representó H-E-B. “Estamos contentos por invitarnos a este evento, los estudiantes a pesar de su corta edad,
interpretan magistralmente cada nota con sus respectivos instrumentos. Que disfruten de esta navidad y su significado”, comento el director Pierce. “Para nosotros este concierto fue de sorpresa. Nos divertimos y
tuvimos excelente pasatiempo”, dijo Rosemarie Lara, cliente del centro quien tuvo el honor de bailar con H-E-Buddy. “ La música de orquesta fue fabulosa, nos hizo sentirnos motivados y seguir adelante en nuestra
meta en el cuidado de personas que a diario asistimos. Gracias a H-E-B por los donativos y a Dwight Middle School que hicieron posible el excelente ambiente navideño”, indicó Sandra Rubio, coordinadora del

Cuando el submarino se hunde
Llevaba allí cuarenta y
nueve años, casi medio siglo,
descansando sobre blandas
arenas, recostado sobre un
flanco en medio del silencio
y de la oscuridad. Dentro
de él estaban los cuerpos de
cincuenta marinos alemanes:
la tripulación completa.
¿Qué era? Un submarino alemán de 80 metros de
eslora, identificado como
U-1226. Fue hundido en
acción de guerra frente a
las costas del Canadá, y fue
descubierto casi medio siglo
después. Lo halló el buceador
Edward Michaud el 5 de junio
de 1993.
El submarino debió de
haber sufrido uno de los
tantos dramas del mar que
en su caso se tradujo en tragedia. Navegando frente a la
costa atlántica del Canadá,
fue cañoneado en octubre de
1944. Se hundió lenta e irremisiblemente, transformándose en la sepultura de sus
cincuenta tripulantes. Pronto
Los niños, la mentira y el robo

lo rodearon el silencio, la oscuridad y la eterna calma del
fondo de los mares.
Fue un final trágico para
esos cincuenta hombres. No
hubo forma de salvarse. Eran
prisioneros dentro del casco
de acero que terminó siendo
su sepultura. Así es la guerra,
y así es la vida.
¿Qué hace uno cuando,
aunque no se encuentre dentro de un submarino hundido,
de todos modos se encuentra
dentro de una situación adversa que parece tragárselo
vivo? Ve uno, poco a poco,
hundirse su vida en el mar de
la desesperación, y no hay
nada que puede hacer para
detener el naufragio. ¿Qué
hace uno? ¿A quién acude?
¿Hay alguna solución?
Probablemente la mayoría
de nuestras adversidades
tienen una causa humana y,
por lo tanto, una solución humana. Gran parte del tiempo
somos nosotros mismos los
que provocamos nuestras

tragedias. Volviendo sobre
nuestros pasos podemos,
muchas veces, hallar dónde
y cómo comenzó nuestro
mal. Y si en humildad nos
despojamos de toda rebeldía
y pedimos perdón a quien
hemos ofendido, allí queda
resuelto nuestro problema.
Sin embargo, otras veces
parece no haber solución.
Todas las puertas están cerradas y no hay escape. Es en
esos momentos y para esas
situaciones que tenemos que
deponer nuestro orgullo y
confesarle a Dios nuestra inhabilidad. La obstinación es
nuestro enemigo número uno,
ya que no nos deja encontrar
a Dios. Y sin embargo, es
Él quien puede librarnos del
naufragio.
Humillémonos ante nuestro
Creador. Dios nos ama. Él
sólo espera escuchar nuestra
oración. Digámosle: “Señor,
te necesito. ¡Ayúdame, por
favor!” De hacerlo así, Él nos
rescatará.
En este mensaje tratamos el
siguiente caso de una mujer que
«descargó su conciencia» de manera anónima en nuestro sitio www.
conciencia.net, autorizándonos a
que la citáramos:
Tengo un niño de seis años [que
es muy] inteligente y muy extrovertido.... Siempre me pide dinero;
muy pocas veces le doy (sólo
cuando puedo). En estos días llegó
de la escuela comiendo helado, y yo
no le había dado dinero.... Le revisé
los bolsillos y, [para] mi mayor sorpresa, tenía [unos billetes]....
Luego de decirme varias mentiras, me dijo que los había sustraído
de una cajita donde guardo un dinero. Eso me entristeció mucho. No le
pegué porque le prometí que si me
decía la verdad, no le pegaba.
[También] me confesó que era
la segunda vez que lo hacía.... Eso
me preocupa mucho. ¿Qué me
aconsejan?
Este es el consejo que le dimos:
Estimada amiga:
Lo más importante de la información que nos dio es la edad de su
hijo, ya que nuestra respuesta a su
caso sería muy diferente si su hijo
fuera mayor. Pero a los seis años
de edad, los niños (aun los que son
muy inteligentes) no tienen la capacidad intelectual de comprender
cuestiones morales tales como la
mentira y el robo. Los expertos en
el desarrollo de los niños sostienen
que un niño de seis años no puede
distinguir del todo entre la realidad
y la fantasía.
Los padres no deben esperar que
sus hijos menores de siete años entiendan la lógica. Eso es importante
porque se requiere la lógica para
razonar, y es necesaria la razón para
comprender los derechos de propiedad. Por lo tanto, es poco realista
esperar que su hijo comprenda por
qué es malo quitarle algo a usted.
De modo que, si bien usted debe
enseñarle que eso es malo, no debe
esperar que él comprenda por qué
lo es.
Con frecuencia los padres les
hacen a sus hijos la pregunta: “¿Por
qué?”, esperando en vano a que la
respondan. Los niños menores de
siete años no tienen capacidad alguna para explicar por qué hicieron
algo en particular....
A los niños se les debe enseñar
a distinguir entre el bien y el mal.
Y hay que darles el debido castigo
cuando desobedecen. Los padres
incluso deben dar razones para las
reglas de acuerdo con la edad de
los niños, tales como: “Cuando se
le pega a alguien, eso duele. Serás
castigado si le pegas a alguien.” ...
Sin embargo, es inútil y destructivo
decir luego: “¿Por qué quieres herir
a mamá?” ... Con eso se le echa la
culpa al niño de tener malas motivaciones, cuando el niño aún no puede
razonar debidamente como para
tener malas motivaciones. Y se le
da al niño la idea de que él mismo es
malo en lugar de su conducta.
La Biblia enseña que todo ser
humano nace con una naturaleza
pecaminosa.1 Un niño toma decisiones que son malas moralmente,
como cuando miente y cuando
roba, desde muy temprana edad;
pero Dios no lo juzga culpable de
ese pecado hasta que tenga la madurez necesaria para comprender
y razonar. Mientras tanto, Dios
le da al niño padres que tienen la
responsabilidad de enseñarle a distinguir entre el bien y el mal, y de
disciplinarlo con el fin de ayudarlo
a escoger lo bueno y lo que no ha
de hacerle daño....

La nueva iglesia católica de St. Dominic abre sus puertas

“Together we Build…Juntos
construímos”, así lo expresó visiblemente emocionado y con la
alegría reflejada en el rostro, el Reverendo Eric J. Ritter, un sacerdote
católico nacido en nuestra ciudad
y que creció en Corpus Christi.
Al quien desde aproximadamente
tres años es el guía espiritual de
esta parroquia. Al Reverendo le
ha correspondido el privilegio de
consumar un proyecto de más de
cuarenta años para construir este
nuevo templo.
Especial cuidado tuvo el Padre de
la iglesia en la supervisión de esta
bella construcción ya que el Ritter
estudió la carrera de Arquitectura
en la Universidad de Texas en Austin, en donde graduó en 1987.
Su vocación de servicio a Dios lo
llevó a abrazar la carrera sacerdotal,
en la que se ah distinguido por ser
un auténtico siervo del Señor que
brinda a sus semejantes el apoyo
espiritual de su investidura con un
espíritu de paz y cordialidad lo que
constatamos desde el momento que
empezamos el recorrido por el interior del templo en su compañía.
El moderno edificio está ubicado
en el 5919 de Ingram Road. El Reverendo nos mostró primeramente el
atrio de la iglesia, un espacio amplio en donde con toda comodidad
las personas que participan de los
eventos religiosos pueden permanecer antes de su ingreso al templo
y así mismo puede servir también
para reuniones de los grupos de
hombres y mujeres de todas las
edades de la congregación.
Al entrar al templo nos acompañaron dos importantes miembros
del equipo de trabajo del Padre
Ritter: Lupie Padilla y Orlando
Solís, con quienes pudimos ver
con asombro la hermosa figura de
Jesucristo en la cruz que majestuosamente cuelga desde el techo
frente al altar y que con su presencia
transmite el amor y la dulzura del
redentor. En este punto Padilla y
Solís nos informaron que fue traído
desde la ciudad de Guadalajara ,
Jalisco en el vecino país del sur, en
donde expertos escultores de arte
religioso lo crearon expresamente
para esta iglesia.
El mobiliario en madera del altar,
púlpito y la iglesia en general fue
diseñado y trabajado por el Hermano, Tom Suda de St. Mary’s
University. Los vitrales son los
mismos que estaban en la antigua
iglesia obra del artista Manlio Cavallini quien además es miembro de
St. Dominic.
La iglesia tiene una capacidad
para 800 personas en el templo
y un área en caso de sobrecupo
que puede albergar un centenar de
personas, con cómodos asientos.
Cuenta con un moderno equipo
de bocinas para escuchar el contenido del mensaje sacerdotal con
gran calidad de sonido, además
de una amplia puerta de cristál
para no perder los detalles de las
actividades religiosas en el interior
del templo.
La ceremonia de la Misa de
Dedicación que iniciará a las diez
de la mañana del sábado 19 de
diciembre, consiste en su parte fundamental en la unción con aceite,
tanto del altar como las paredes del
templo al norte y al sur, en donde
se encuentran cuatro velas (dos en
cada pared) las cuales serán encendidas en esta ceremonia religiosa
por el Arzobispo de San Antonio
José H. Gomez. Cabe mencionar
que estas velas simbolizan los
evangelios de los santos: Mateo,
Marcos, Lucas y Juan que narran
el nacimiento, la muerte y la resurrección de Jesús.
Una vez realizada esta ceremonia de dedicación, las misas se
celebrarán los domingos a las 8 y
10a.m. y a las 12 y 2 p.m. esta última en español. Además de lunes a
viernes se celebrará una misa diaria
a las 8:30 a.m.
Lo invitamos a que visite este
nuevo templo construido con mucho esfuerzo y mucha dedicación
de sus líderes y feligreses. La
construcción tiene un costo aproximado a los seis millones de dólares
y viene a dar una renovada imagen
al entorno de esta importante área
del oeste de la ciudad.

UTSA Air Force ROTC
recognized as best in nation
The University of Texas at San
Antonio’s Air Force Detachment
842 was recently awarded the
AFROTC Right of Line Award,
the most prestigious award for
AFROTC detachments. The award
recognizes the UTSA detachment,
as the best overall large unit in the
nation.
UTSA competed against some
of the largest detachments in the
country including Texas A&M,
Purdue, Embry-Riddle Daytona
Beach, University of ColoradoBoulder, University of Washington
and The Ohio State University.
Competitions were also held for
smaller detachments.
Award criteria included production numbers (actual output
of second lieutenants), education,
recruiting and retention, university
and public relations, cadet activities, and Arnold Air Society activities. The actual award time-frame
covered a two year period; from
2007 to 2009.
In the last decade UTSA’s Detachment 842 cadet enrollment has
grown steadily from 142 to 226

economic message for White House
OLLU president continues tradition
of donating ‘Christmas Card’ funds
Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) continues the
tradition of doing without printing
and mailing Christmas cards and
donating the money to a San Antonio nonprofit organization. This
year, the Children’s Shelter is the
recipient of the $2,000 donation.
The Children’s Shelter provides
emergency shelter care, foster
care, adoption, residential treatment care, child abuse prevention
and teen pregnancy programs to
those living in San Antonio and
throughout Bexar County.
Oren Dreeben, President and
CEO of the Shelter, accepted the
donation and said the need was
particularly great in the neighborhood surrounding OLLU.
In 2004, OLLU President
Tessa Martinez Pollack, PhD,
began the tradition of donating

in our program and more importantly developing quality leaders

Air Force. At the national level,
with 144 detachments, UTSA was
ranked second along with Purdue

UTSA’s culturally diverse
ROTC population surpasses the
Air Force’s historic demographics
of the active duty officer corps,
with the cadet corps being comprised of 25 percent female, 32
percent Hispanic, 13 percent African American, and 11 percent
Asian students.
In terms of size, UTSA is ranked
sixth in the nation, and second in
the state. Texas A&M boasts the
largest detachment in Texas with
325 cadets, 30 commissioned this
past year.
By comparison, UTSA has a
corps of 226 cadets, with 36 commissioned this past year. UTSA
is also tops in the amount of field
training slots awarded with 36
compared to Texas A&M which
had 32.
This fall, more than 100 new
cadets joined Detachment 842.
Regardless of size or detachment,
the Air Force ROTC’s mission
remains simple and definitive:
Develop quality leaders for the
Air Force.
PRO TAX electronic tax
filing services has committed
$2,000 in scholarship money
benefiting students enrolled in
any San Antonio high school,
and challenges other businesses
to donate or match their commitment.
As part of the Dr. Bowie
Scholarship Foundation’s annual scholarship award competition, PRO TAX will make
available to two winners a
one-time scholarship of $1,000
to jump start their entrance into
any San Antonio accredited
college or university. In addition, scholarship recipients
will be offered the opportunity
to apply for a paid internship
(worth over $2,500) at an area
PRO TAX Electronic Tax Filing Services office during tax
season.
These scholarships and internships will give students
academic and financial support towards their professional
development. The recipients
of the scholarships will be selected and the scholarships will
be funded for the fall 2010 semester. The deadline for receipt
of or post marked applications
is Friday, April 30, 2010.
The Dr. Bowie Scholarship
Foundation, which will administer the nomination and
selection process, specializes
in consulting on and implementing performing arts after
school programs. The foundation is implementing their

Merry Christmas
‘Tis the Season for Everything Gingerbread

Who can resist the sweet-spicy
aroma of gingerbread baking,
and the absolute fun of decorating gingerbread creations such as
a welcoming gingerbread house,
or cookies for dessert, gift giving
and, of course, for Santa.

Start with a kit—all of the components needed to assemble the
house are baked and ready to use.
And the kit is complete with easyto-follow instructions, icing mix,

This classic Gingerbread Cookie recipe, redolent with ginger,
cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves,
is perfect for cutting into holiday

lot of you are already thinking about holiday shopping. I
know I am! This year I think
I’ll spend a little less time in
the stores and a little more time
in the kitchen, baking up some
sweet holiday gifts.
I’ve picked some recipes that
make large amounts, so I’ll have
plenty to give away. Holiday
Peppermint Bark couldn’t be
easier to make – it only has two
ingredients. The pretty red and
white candies will look very festive in a holiday tin lined with
red or green tissue paper or in
a glass jar with a holiday ribbon
tied around it.
I love making this fudge, too.
It can be made with semi-sweet
chocolate, milk chocolate or
butterscotch morsels. I like
to make a batch of each, then
mix and match the flavors in a
goodie bag or holiday box. For
an extra special presentation,
put each piece in a little paper
shapes, including the favorite
gingerbread man…which can be
enjoyed plain, simply outlined in
white icing, or more elaborately
decorated. This versatile recipe
could also be the basis for a homemade gingerbread house, or tree
ornaments. For ornaments, don’t
forget to make a hole in the cookie
(using a thin drinking straw) immediately after removing from
the oven.

Gingerbread Cookies
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup solid vegetable short- cooling grid 3 minutes; remove

Preheat oven to 375ºF.

cool slightly. Stir in sugar, molasses and egg; mix well. Add 2 cups
flour mixture; mix well.
Turn mixture onto lightly
floured surface. Knead in remaining flour mixture by hand.
Add additional flour, if necessary,
to make firm dough. Roll out on
a lightly floured surface, 1/8- to
1/4-inch thick. Cut out cookies
with holiday cutters in a variety
of shapes.
Bake on ungreased cookie sheet
until lightly browned on edges,
about 10-15 minutes for large
sized cookies, 6-10 minutes for
small to medium sized cookies.
Cool on cookie sheet placed on

Holiday Peppermint Bark
(Makes 1 pound of candy)
2 cups (12-ounce package)
Nestlé Toll House Premier
White Morsels
24 hard peppermint candies,
unwrapped
LINE baking sheet with wax
paper.
MICROWAVE morsels in
medium, uncovered, microwave-safe bowl on MEDIUMHIGH (70%) power for 1 min-
ute; STIR. Morsels may retain
some of their original shape.
If necessary, microwave at additional 10- to 15-second intervals, stirring just until morsels
are melted.
PLACE peppermint candies in heavy-duty plastic bag.
Crush candies using rolling pin
or other heavy object. While
holding strainer over melted
morsels, pour crushed candy
into strainer. Shake to release
all small candy pieces; reserve
larger candy pieces. Stir morsel-peppermint mixture.
SPREAD mixture to desired
thickness on prepared baking
sheet. Sprinkle with reserved
candy pieces; press in lightly.
Let stand for about 1 hour or
until firm. Break into pieces.
Store in airtight container at
room temperature.
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2/3 cup (5 fluid-ounce can)

Milk
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups miniature marshmallows
1 1/2 cups (9 ounce) Nestlé

1/2 cup chopped pecans or
walnuts (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
