Mary Buren Elementary School February 2016 - Volume 1, Issue 2 I’m Late!
by: Savannah Calderon
The Wheels on the Bus Go Up and Down
No time to say hello, goodbye; I’m late! I’m late! I’m late! Have you ever been late to school? If you are not in class before the bell rings, then you should follow these simple steps:
Step 1:
Don’t be late! School starts at 8:27 am, so be on time.
Step 2:
If you are late, go to the office and get a tardy slip before going to class. It is important to not come late to school because you can miss all of the important information that your teacher has to say, like assignment information and family movie nights. Did you know that there were 182 students that came to school on time and had perfect attendance during the first trimester this year?! You can do it too and get an award for being at school every day! Mrs. Soares told me that the only reason you shouldn’t come to school is if you are sick, you have to attend a funeral, or if you have a doctor’s appointment. I hope you can take my advice and get an award at our next assembly! World’s Funniest Kid

Maybe someday these will happen, but in the meantime, have fun on this year’s field trips everyone! Do you remember watching Kid President talk about Martin Luther King at our last assembly? His name is Robby Novak, a.k.a. Kid President. He is 11 years old and from Tennessee. He loves dancing, playing the drums, spending time with friends, and making the world a better place. He is changing the world by making the world awesome and helping people, like cleaning up the trash in our world. We can change the world by feeding the homeless, getting clothes for poor people, and cleaning up our school and neighborhoods. Check out this video to learn more ways to be awesome like Kid President:

Did you know that we come to school a total of 180 days out of the year? It’s true! On February 9th, everyone celebrated the 100th day of school, which means that we are more than halfway done with the year already! Every class celebrated the day in many fun ways. We even got to do some fun things at lunch. From the very first day of school, many classes keep track of the days by counting straws or craft sticks. The 100th day of school is more than just a fun day, it’s the perfect time to have fun doing math using the number 100. Here’s a few other fun things that were shared on 100s day. Poem: One hundred days of learning. One hundred days of fun. One hundred days of work and play. Aren’t I the lucky one? Just Keep Swimming, Swimming, Swimming... by: Azariah Yubeta I Will Make You Literally Say: LOL!
Our fifth grade students are going to be traveling to the YMCA soon to learn how to swim like a fish, just like Dori in Finding Nemo. Starting on March 7th, all fifth graders will be taking lessons to learn how to save themselves, or someone else from drowning. Learning to swim is really important because we live close to the ocean and the teachers want to make sure everyone is safe in the water. They will be learning and having fun at the same time, it’s also a good P.E. activity. They will go for four days in a row, and they will learn all the basic swimming techniques. After talking to all of the fifth grade teachers, they all said that if you don't know how to swim, this will make you a pro! Around the World by: Elena Zalvala
Hey boys and girls, today I’m going to teach you how to play a recess game called Around the World. Equipment:

You will need about 5 cones and one basketball. Players:
Any size of group Steps of How to Play: 1. Place cones around the perimeter of the basketball area near the hoop.. 2. Line players up behind the first cone. 3. The first player shoots from the first spot. IF she/he makes the basket, she/he goes and shoots from the next cone. The same player continues around the cones until a basket is missed. 4. After this player misses, she/he passes the ball to the next person in line, and goes to the end of the line. 5. You keep going until someone eventually goes all the way around and wins the game. She/he can restart from the beginning. This game is super fun and it’s exercise for your body too. Try it out with your friends and have some fun! Guadalupe Youth Basketball League The league continues throughout February. We will check in with the teams next month to see how the season played out. Page 3 Continued on Next Page What?! Who is professional, sweet, hard-working, helpful, smart, dedicated, caring, and kept our community close! MARIA GAUNA! That’s who! Maria just retired from working at our school for 26 years! She was the person who kept track of daily attendance. This meant that she helped make sure kids were at school safely every day and called our homes if we were absent. It was a big job because there are a lot of kids at our school to keep track of. She retired because she wanted to spend more time with her family and wanted to travel. I interviewed a few people who knew her best to see what they had to say about Maria. Mrs. Barkley said, “She did a great job for our school. She made a lot of phone calls to get information about our students.” When I asked Mrs. Merino to describe Maria in one word, she said, “Awesome!” Although we are going to miss Maria a bunch, Mrs. Soares said not to worry because we already have a new attendance person named Edith Perez. Welcome to our school Edith! It sounds like you are going to be busy!!! Star Wars has been around for a long time. Have you ever read any of the books? I remember reading
Star Wars, the School of Fears
. I thought it was an awesome book! The books use to be really popular, and then I think everyone kind of forgot about them. Student Council Happenings by: Zaori Camargo ●

But now they are popular once again thanks to the new movie, Star Wars the Force Awakens, that is out in theatres. Some people even have the entire book and movie collection, now those are true Star Wars fans! If you are interested in Star Wars, or just can’t wait until the next movie comes out, then you should check out the books to read. Seuss on the Loose
