Rerun: Presentation of Our Lord, February 2, 2014
My dear friends in Christ, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Before it
used to be called the Feast of the Purification of Mary and Candlemas as well. The Presentation of the Lord is about Jesus coming to us as fulfillment, as hope and as truth. In today’s
Gospel we meet an old prophet Simeon and an old prophetess Anna. As old people they are
connected with the past and with memory. Listen to the words of the Prophet Isaiah:
“The Lord has bared his holy arm in the sight of all the nations;
All the ends of the earth can see the salvation of our God”. (Is 52:10)
Simeon and Anna long to see the fulfillment of those promises. They were unusual people as
old people, because their total concern is for the future. They don’t live backwards, but forward. Something yet to happen dominates their lives. They are alive with expectation and
hope, waiting for the one who will be the consolation of their own people and the light for all
nations. They are an old people who are totally open: they hunger for God’s presence, and
wait for the day when they can see it themselves.
Their waiting is not in vain, As Luke says, the parents of Jesus came with the child Jesus to
the temple. They are a good Jewish family who keeps the Law which obliged them to consecrate to God the first male that opened the womb. So, in today’s Gospel we have the meeting between youth and old age; between the young parents and the old venerable; between
hope and fulfillment. Simeon takes the child into his arms; he gathers it to himself and
blessed God saying:
“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace,
according to your word, for my eyes have seen your
salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples
a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for
your people Israel”.(Lk 2:29-32)
During those years of waiting, how often Simeon and Anna must have been tempted to think
that things would never change and to despair that God’s promises would never come true!
But they never yielded to that kind of temptation.
We too, like Simeon and Anna, wait for the fulfillment of the promises God made at the birth
of his Son. He has promised that through Jesus he will free us from sin (Heb2:15). God has
promised that in Christ we can have salvation (LK 2:30), a salvation that leads us from
living death to deathless life. He has promised his salvation, of course, only to those who
take Christ not only as their Savior but also as Lord of their lives, for salvation is not a cafeteria where you can take whatever you want and leave the rest. God has promised that in
Christ we will have ‘light’ (Lk 2:32). With that light shining in our souls, we need not, like
blind men, stumble against one another creating war; with that light, we need not walk in the
shadows of fear and uncertainties, for it will be a revealing light that will show things up as
disguises and concealment, are stripped away, so that we can clearly see what God wants
from us.
The hopes of Simeon are fulfilled, for he sees in Jesus the promised salvation of God. And
Anna, whose timing is exquisite, since “she came by just at that moment”, praises God for
what has happened in the person of Jesus. All the ancient promises are fulfilled.
God will choose his own time to make his promises come true in our lives. We should wait
patiently for their fulfillment. Our waiting period may be difficult, even dangerous, as one
feels when climbing a mountain. We might even feel like crying out like the Psalmist:
“Who may go to the mountain of the Lord?
Who can stand in his holy place? (Ps 24:3)
And yet, we cannot afford to give up our waiting. We do not know why God should make us
wait so long for the light of Christ to shine on us. But this much we know: the Almighty does
nothing without reason, though our frail human mind cannot explain the reason. God is at
work in the world in a way far beyond our power to comprehend. Hence, we are not taking
any risks when we step out on the promise of God.
FEBRUARY 12
LINCOLN’S BIRTHDAY
My dear friends, we can take Jesus to ourselves, we can share in his life, and pledge our
selves anew to his Gospel. No matter what age we are, we are presented with the same
challenge: can we take the Lord into our lives, say “yes” to whom he is, and the person he
wants us to be? When we can “yes” to that, then we too can go our way in peace.
