dogs training, and promote puppy raising with the slogan “Raise a dog. Change a life.” One click
on the ad and you’re at a CCI site that allows you to download the banner ads to put on your
own websites, add a super hero cape to a photo of your favorite pet and send it to a friend. Please
go see for yourself at cci.org — and ask a friend or business associate to place the banner ad on
their website.
We’re proud to announce a unique grant to CCI from Google™ that puts CCI at the top of
searches, resulting in over $50,000 in free online ads to date. This has already increased awareness
of our programs and applications for assistance dogs. Now, when someone sees a CCI ad and all
they can remember is “service dog” we pop up in the google search.
It’s been a fun and busy year creating an online presence for CCI. As we close out 2008 and
look to doing more to expand our outreach for applicants and awareness in 2009 we are grateful
for your personal support. We never lose sight of our mission to provide exceptional dogs for

Canine Companions for Independence®
The Miller Family Campus: First Graduates
The Miller Family Campus, our new Northeast Regional Training Center, is open and
fully functioning thanks to Canine Companions supporters across the country.
The first Northeast Region graduates to experience Team Training at The Miller
Family Campus began Team Training on August 25 and graduated on September 6.
They studied in the spacious and fully accessible training rooms, shared meals together
in Bogie’s Bistro and slept comfortably in the fully accessible Hagedorn Team Training
Residence Hall. All of the supporters who made this facility possible will forever be
a part of each and every Northeast Region graduate’s experience as they begin their
journey with a CCI assistance dog.
Long-time supporters Anne and Wayne Gittinger have generously offered a
challenge grant of $1.5 million to CCI’s Northeast Regional Center Capital Campaign.
The challenge grant will match dollar-to-dollar each contribution made to the campaign up to a maximum of $1.5 million for donations made by December 31, 2008.

Outreach to Veterans
In August 2008 officials from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs visited
the Canine Companions national headquarters in Santa Rosa, CA. This visit
was a direct result of our organization-wide efforts to provide more veterans
with assistance dogs. Officials Neal Eckrich and Cindy Poorman observed two
CCI graduates participating in Assistance Dog International public testing,
where they gained an understanding of the depth of skills a certified assistance

In 2008 we placed our first assistance dog with a veteran from the current
conflict. We are proud of this accomplishment, and feel that as more people
who directly serve veterans understand our services we will in turn be able
to assist more veterans.

Charitable Gift Annuity:
A Practical Gift for Any Income
Jack Meeks is a retired high school math and science teacher living in the foothills of
the Sierra Nevada mountains. Canine Companions for Independence came to Jack’s
attention during some work at UC Davis and Yuba College. Jack took out his first
charitable gift annuity with CCI in 2005. Recently Jack was asked, after his third
annuity with CCI, why he chose this type of gift. He was quick to give four reasons:
the gift would not be probated; value to the charity; an immediate tax deduction for
him and no commission.
Jack is like many of us. He grew up in Queens and entered the army right out
of high school. He served in the Pacific Theater in WWII, as an attaché to NATO

Puppy Power
F
or the past 15 years, a 4H group in Washington State has been raising CCI puppies as
their 4H project. They call themselves Puppy Power 4H. Currently there are 36 kids
who are members of the group, and over the past 15 years the group has raised over 30
puppies for CCI.
In addition to following the CCI puppy raising guidelines, the Puppy Power 4H members
also complete the 4H educational requirements including; basic dog care and anatomy,
public speaking, presentation, record keeping and acquiring leadership skills.
Terri Smith, a CCI volunteer and contract trainer who teaches CCI puppy
obedience classes in Seattle also teaches classes for Puppy Power 4H. She has
watched a number of kids and puppies go through the program.
“This is one of the best things kids could ever do. The Puppy Power 4H
project has a high difficulty level with an even higher reward since its service
oriented. I’ve gotten to really watch kids grow and develop friendships and
leadership skills that they may not have had the opportunity to do without the
Puppy Power 4H,” shares Terri.
Puppy Power 4H raises puppies for the Northwest region of CCI. Northwest
Region Puppy Program Manager, Lorna O’Connor, says, “This program could
be easily replicated for other 4H clubs with consistent and committed adult
group leaders who are willing to combine CCI puppy raising guidelines and
the 4H requirements.”
