“Transformed by love to
Transform with Love”
What should I write about St Francis this time for the editorial of Shanthidooth was my preoccupation. With this
thought in mind I went to preach a retreat to a group of
sisters in Ernakulam. The above phrase came to me when I
reached the place of retreat. The social apostolate of those
sisters is explained under this heading. I became joyful because it is hundred percent
true to St Francis. Every one speaks about
St Francis and writes a lot about him. What
more I need than this beautiful expression
which is kept as the title of the editorial?
This tells me everything related to Francis.
I know and believe that all those who read
this editorial will be having more knowledge about St
Francis than me. Among the saints in the Catholic Church,
St Francis is known as the second Christ because he was
“transformed by love to transform with Love”. I am indeed
happy to say that when Francis was transformed by the
love of Christ he could transform everything with the same
love.
In 2013 when Pope Francis celebrated our Heavenly Patron’s feast in Assisi, he spoke about Francis and the excerpts I place here:
Where did Francis’s journey to Christ begin? It began with
the gaze of the crucified Jesus. With letting Jesus look at us
at the very moment that he gives his life for us and draws
us to himself. Francis experienced this in a special way in
5
the Church of San Damiano, as he prayed before the cross
which I too will have an opportunity to venerate. On that
cross, Jesus is depicted not as dead, but alive! Blood is flowing from his wounded hands, feet and side, but that blood
speaks of life. Jesus’ eyes are not closed but open, wide
open: he looks at us in a way that touches our hearts. The
cross does not speak to us about defeat and failure; paradoxically, it speaks to us about a death which is life, a death
which gives life, for it speaks to us of love, the love of God
incarnate, a love which does not die, but triumphs over evil
and death. When we let the crucified Jesus gaze upon us,
we are re-created; we become “a new creation”. Everything
else starts with this: the experience of transforming grace,
the experience of being loved for no merits of our own, in
spite of our being sinners. That is why Saint Francis could
say with Saint Paul: “Far be it for me to glory except in the
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal 6:14).
Can anyone get transformed at all? Yes is my answer and
the clear example is Francis. To transform ourselves from
our ordinary life to the level of St Francis, let us pray to
God; Loving and compassionate God, you invited Francis
to follow you in a life of simplicity and joy that helped him
to transform himself to a new status. May we imitate his
devotion to Your Gospel and his love of all creation and
reach the same height.
With festal greetings of our Seraphic Father,
For the editorial board of Shanthidooth, . . . . . .

St. Francis an Irresistible Saint
Dear Brothers,
As we are celebrating the feast of our heavenly Patron I wish you all Peace & Joy. May St. Francis and his
ideals be a challenging and a disturbing presence to us.
‘The world is in need of a Franciscan touch’. It awaits a
divinely-human healer like St. Francis
who could communicate the radiance
and fragrance of God’s Love.
It is a fact that St. Francis still stands
as an irresistible saint. Why is he so
fascinating? Simply because he was a
heartfelt ally to everything and everyone around him: From man to beast,
from the trees to the stones, from the
sun to the moon to the changing seasons - Francis was their
kindred spirit. Elizabeth Patton Moss must have had this
notion in her mind when she wrote:
"Saint Francis came to preach. With smiles he met the
friendless, fed the poor, freed a trapped bird, and led a child
home. Although he spoke no word, his text, God's love, the
town did not forget."
The reader cannot even begin to see the sense of a story that
may well seem to him a very wild one, until he understands
that to this great mystic his religion was not a thing like a
theory but a thing like a love- affair” (Chesterton 1989).
Can he be just a Museum Piece?
In a post-Christendom era, where people are skeptical of almost everything around them, we need to learn from Francis as how to genuinely embody the good news in the mod7
ern world. With the gospels
as his rule of life, he sought
to follow Jesus’ footsteps as
a peacemaker who traveled
around welcoming the strangers,
the outcasts, loving nature and the
environment, and living in communities. As we get closer to him
and to his way of life, we will be encouraged and challenged to consider
how to embody the gospel in our day
to day life.
The words of Jesus in the Gospels took
its best shape in the person of Francis. No
wonder Francis cried out in a new-found
ecstasy: "This is what I want! This is what
I desire! This is what I long for with all my
heart and soul!" Brothers, let Francis be a measure,
inspiration and sure possibility for us and let Francis continue to touch and cure the world through us. As he said:
‘We haven’t done anything yet, let us start anew’. Once
again wish you everything best of the feast and let us with
one mind and heart celebrate this day and thus be his true
followers in and around.
With festal greetings and love
Br Thomas Karingadayil

Alverna Ashram, Sulthan Bathery
We wish you all a blessed feast of our father St. Francis
Reopening of the academic year 2014-2015
2nd of June was one of the auspicious day to all of us in Alverna since on this day we began our new academic year.
We have chosen “Enlightened to Enlighten” as the motto
of this academic year. In the morning we had concelebrated Holy Eucharist
where we dedicated
our life before the
Lord. During the
homily Br Provincial emphasised the
importance of fraternal life which is
one of the core carism of Franciscan
life. Besides he reminded the brothers
to be fruitful seeds
with thirty, sixty and hundred fold. It was followed by Lexio Brevis were Br Provincial formally inaugurated the new
academic year. Br Vincent Kurisummootil , our spiritual director highlighted the need of being docile to the prompting
of the holy spirit. Br Rector spoke on the importance of the
four pillars of seminary formation, Prayer, Study, Fraternity
and Apostolic life. Br Jinson introduced the various subjects of the academic year, while Br Tinto thanked every
one of the participants.
10
On the following day Br Biju Elampachamveettil animated
an introductory retreat before the commencement of the
lessons. It was appreciated by everyone and reminded once
again the Franciscan values to be fostered in our formation.
Thanks a million Br Biju, for challenging us in our way to
perfection.
Hearty Welcome
Our community became truly Trinitarian on the day of the
arrival of Br Tinto Parathinal. After his successful parish
ministry in Thariyode parish he was taken to Alverna on
7th May together
with Parish Priest,
Trustees and a few
other parishners.
Being an energetic brother, he
is fully involved
in the community,
especially guiding
the brothers especially in the flower
garden. He teaches
Information Technology in the seminary.
On 28th May we gave a red carpet welcome to Brs. Anil,
Jose and 11 of our first year brothers. Very soon they became part and parcel of Alverna Seminary. Now together
with the second year students the total number is 24.
Plus two Results
The results of this year manifest the discipline and hard
work of our brothers in their academic pursuit. It is an all
time record since all of them backed an above 65% marks.
Br Justin George scored 97 out of 100 in English Language
11
is an all time record. Kudos dear brothers for your academic
achievements!
Send off to Third years
Three of our third years were given send off on 9th June.
In the evening we arranged Biriyani Sadhya in honour of
them. The younger brothers appreciated them and presented some artistic talents to enhance the joy of the day. Br
Rector thanked them for their innumerable services to the
community and reminded them of the challenges in days to
come. On their part they too thanked the community individually. Br Tinto took them to Kattappana on the following day.
Feast of the Sacred Heart
We celebrated the Feast of Sacred Heart on 27th June. In the
evening we gathered in front of the picture of the Sacred
Heart dedicating ourselves by reciting the act of dedication
before the Lord. Br Lithin guided the community with his
inspiring message. Moreover it was an occasion of blessing
the house and its premises.
Feast of St Alphonsa
We began Novena on 20th July in preparation for the celebration of the feast of St Alphonsa. On 28th evening we had
the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided by Br Prince.
In his homily he highlighted the importance of making a
distinction between spirituality and piety. It was followed
by Nerchasadhya. There were a good number of faithful
who attended the celebration.
Extension lectures
We are ever grateful to Br Prince for his English grammar
classes. Although he was very busy with his preparation to
go abroad for higher studies, he found a couple of weeks to
be with the seminarians after completing his IELTS course
12
with higher grades. His knowledge on the topic and the
teaching skill made him a good teacher. Thank you, dear
Br Prince for sacrificing your time and energy with us. We
wish you God’s blessing in your higher studies.
Birthday Celebration
We had a joined celebration of the Birthdays of Brs. Jinson
and Prince on 7th August. On the previous day we had an
hour of adoration thanking the Lord for the gift of these
brothers. During the Lunch Br. Guardian thanked them for
their great gift and appreciated their lively presence in the
seminary. To add our joy on the occasion we had the presence of our parish priest and assistant priests. Br Devanand
and the Panamaram community also joined us for the celebration.
Feast of the Assumption and the Independence Day
We have celebrated the Assumption of our Lady and the
Independence Day of our country with all devotion and reverence. After the solemn Eucharistic celebration Br Rector
hoisted the flag. It was followed by the Message of Br Sachin who highlighted the aspect of real freedom.
Bimonthly Gathering
On 29th August we had the bimonthly gathering at Padre
Pio Ashram Panamaram. It was an occasion to celebrate our
brotherhood. We discussed the Minister General’s circular
letter “Grace of Working”
in preparation for the plenary Council of the Order.
Onam Celebration
We have celebrated onam
with all its gaiety and tradition. On the previous
13
day the brothers were divided into two groups and had the
competition in verities of games. The floral decoration of
this year was really remarkable. At noon we had the sumptuous Onasadhya with more than 15 dishes.

Amalagiri Ashram Edatt, Payyannur
Greetings of Joy and Peace from Amalagiri
Prayer Life
The students are initiated to prayer from
the very beginning of the scholastic
year. Every morning and evening they
get almost half an hour each to spend
before the Lord in silent meditation.
They have common rosary and other prayers of the
church. Every Friday an hour of adoration adds joy
to their prayer life.
Work
The work in the agricultural garden, flower garden, other
cleanings, vegetable cutting, helping in the kitchen are all
done by our brothers under the guidance of Rector and especially in the agricultural garden by Br Martinian. The
brothers come to know the grace of working in their lives
regularly and they sincerely cooperate.
Classes
The brothers in Amalagiri receive a variety of topics
to begin their Capuchin journey. Classes on Spirituality, English Grammar, Psychology and Liturgy
and English Academy are safe in the hands of Br
Anil Mangat our Rector, General English, Music
and Malayalam Academy by Br Jose Karingadayil
our Asst Rector, Franciscanism by Br Martinian our
vicar, Introduction to Holy Bible by Br Paul Kottaram. Through all these scheduled topics and other
15
extension lectures the days are really occupied for
the brothers and they really become safe in the journey.
Games
The time for play also remains as an important aspect in the
formation of the students where they come out with their
real character and colour. We have only one out door game
that is volley ball. Rector and Vice Rector give volleyball
coaching every day because the majority of the brothers are
new to volley ball. Every day they get an hour for games
and on Sundays and other special holidays they get extra
time for games.
Cultural Activities
On alternative Saturdays after supper the brothers put
up variety entertainments for almost 45 minutes. The
students are divided in to four groups so that a group
get the chance once a month. Through this they are
able to get rid of their stage fear as well as become better performers for the future.
Spiritual Nourishment
There will be Retreats and Monthly Recollections for the
16
brothers in on a regular basis. Every month Br Siby Mattathil from St Joseph ashram Vellarikund come here to animate the monthly recollection and administer the sacrament
of reconciliation to the brothers. The brothers get retreats
in every semester to deepen their commitment. This year
the first retreat was preached by Br Jomon Asanparambil
the Guardian of Gethsemany Ashram Changanassery of St
Joseph Province.
Onam Celebration
As in the previous years, this year also we had a
wonderful onam celebration. We anticipated the
onam celebration to fifth September. We invited
few of our neighbours as well the Rev. Sisters
for the lunch which consisted of 40 dishes to the
surprise of everyone. In the afternoon we had
lot of games and all enjoyed the day.
Vacation
The brothers were eagerly waiting for the first vacation after they became part of the seminary. On sixth morning they
went for Onam vacation and were back on 14th. All were
happy to meet their dear ones to share the joy of the seminary.
17
Ministries
All the members of the community are active in the pastoral ministries and other spiritual ministries in an around
Amalagiri. This year Br Anil went to take classes on introduction to Moral Theology at Capuchin
Vidhyabhavan Kottayam and Vijnananilayam
Janampet. He is fresh with licentiate in Moral Theology from the University of Lugano
and his classes were well appreciated. Br
Martinian took classes on Religious Life to
the SABS Novices. Br Jose Mathew Karingadayil went to Kottayam to take classes
to sisters. Br Paul Kottaram goes out often to preach retreats and to take classes to
different groups. Recently he had been to
Ernakulam to preach retreat to the CSST sisters and went to Thiruvananthapuram to animate the Jesus
Youth members of the Techno Park.
New Vehicle
It is customary to get the necessary consent of the provincial
definitory before ever we purchase a vehicle. But Amalagiri
community went beyond it in this regard. We bought a vehicle neither getting the permission nor informing the Provincial and team. All are looking for the latest vehicles with
all the modern facilities and we also went to several dealers
and bought one which is really fitting to the community and
that is a single wheeler ie., a wheelbarrow. It helps us to collect and carry coconut, firewood, cow dung etc…
Guests
We are always happy to welcome guests to our community.
The guests always cheer up the spirits of the brothers with
their joyful and warm presence. We had so many guests
18
during this time: few of the batchmates of Paul Kottaram namely

his loving visit and he stayed overnight here.
The Celebration of Ettunombu
We had a meaningful preparation of Ettunombu –eight day

Celibate life lived as Sterility
Pope Francis
One of the dangers of a "sterile" form of celibacy is bitterness and gossip, Pope Francis told a group of priests and
bishops in Caserta in Italy. "A man who is alone ends up
bitter, not fruitful, and he gossips about others," the pope
said. When a priest disagrees with his bishop or when bishops disagree with each other, they must air their differences
even loudly but never talk behind each other's backs.
"Say it to his face," the pope recommended. "You're a man,
so if you have something against your bishop, go and tell
him. “There may be consequences, but pick up your cross,
be a man!” Pope admitted that he, too, has been tempted
to gossip. "I've wondered if this isn't the consequence of a
celibate life lived as sterility, not fruitfulness."
A priest in Rome, he said, once told him that he was worried that so many priests and bishops are bitter and angry
with each other. "When we find a priest who lives with such
anger and tension, we think: This man drinks vinegar for
breakfast, then, for lunch, pickled vegetables and, in the
evening, a nice glass of lemon juice," the pope said.
Pope Francis told the priests it is normal and even "healthy"
to get angry, but wallowing in that, not getting it off his
chest, not airing differences directly, but talking behind
someone's back causes more damage.
The key to a fruitful life, the pope said, lies in "double fidelity and double transcendence: being faithful to God is
seeking him, opening oneself to him in prayer, remembering that he is the faithful one," and "opening oneself to others" with empathy, respect and patience. "Creativity" is "a
22
divine word," because God told Adam to care for the earth,
make it bear fruit, "be creative." But as priests, that creativity must be inspired by the Holy Spirit and the only hope
for that to happen is "the path of prayer," he said. "A bishop
who doesn't pray, a priest who doesn't pray, closes the door,
closes the path to creativity."
Openness to the Spirit must be accompanied by openness
to other people and to their real problems, the pope said.
The only way to learn about the needs of others is to listen to them, patiently and resisting the temptation to give
easy answers. "We cannot be a church closed in on itself,
navel-gazing, a church that is self-referential, that stares at
itself and is incapable of transcendence," he said. "Going
out is not an adventure, but a journey, it is the journey to
which God has called us since the moment he told Abraham, 'Leave your homeland.'

Calvary Diary
Hearty welcome to you all, to the pages of Calvary diary.
Let us open it now and here is the account of what had happened in past few months.
1-06-2014
Calvary was filled with joy on the arrival of the newly professed brothers. They are 25 in number and they are fully active in the daily activities of Ashram. Number of the
members of Calvary family has increased to 92 with their
coming.
It is all time for fun and enjoyment of studies here in Calvary after re opening. We have regular classes, university
Examinations, occasional text papers, extension lectures
etc. It is taxing but quite amusing.
2-07-2014
It was the day of our blessing of our newly built Choir and
Refectory. It is simple in structure but beautiful and quite
conducive for prayer and for meals. We had a special thanksgiving prayer session followed by badakhana this evening.
20-07-2014
It was the day of celebrations in honor of St Lawrence of
Brindisi. Our Malayalam Academy was officially inaugurated for the academic year 2014-’15. We had our Malayalam seminar on the ecological issues. In the evening we
put up magnificent cultural programs and made this day
memorable.
07-09-2014

Capuchin Vidhyabhavan
Greetings of peace and joy from Capuchin Vidhyabhavan
Thellakom,
Poove….. Poli ……Poove …..
The festival of Onam was celebrated with all its splendor
and grandeur. On the previous day of Thiruvonam we had a
fraternal get together of our neighbors. And we had put up
some entertaing games for them. It was very interesting in
which the people partook with a sound competitive spirit.
And on the day of Thiruvonam our second year brothers
made a spectacular Pookkalam, which won the attraction
and appreciation of all. And at noon we had the sumptuous
and delicious onasadya with almost 37 varieties of dishes
prepared by the three batches. It was a time of great joy and
delectation and a celebration of our fraternity.
Welcome back dear Brothers.
After a few months of effective ministries abroad both Fr
Sebastian and Fr Jacob Chamakkala rejoined the community in the month of September. Welcome back dear brothers……. And Fr Mathew Paikada and Fr George Nedumparambil will also be returning back shortly from abroad.
Kilimakalude Punyavalan
Vidhyabahavan was fortunate to be the venue of the book
releasing event of Pro. Sivadasa Menon, the book named
Kilimakalude Punyavalan, an eco-spiritual novel on St
Francis of Assisi. The book was released by Fr. Boby Jose
Kattikkadu. It was really an opening for us to be in love
with books and to have an appetite for the books. So we
express our sincere sentiments of gratitude to Br K Shaji for
having organized such a program.
26
Exams
After the festivity of Onam and other celebrations the brothers are seriously preparing themselves for the forthcoming
semester examinations which would begin on 15th October. The fourth year brothers have successfully done their
Canon Law comprehensive oral examination. Congratulation to you dear brothers ….
Happy feast of our Father in advance
As we are preparing ourselves to celebrate the feast of our
heavenly patron St Francis we wish you all a happy feast in
advance. Let all our celebrations be a manifestation of our
brotherhood and thus our bond of brotherhood be strengthened.

Ingolstadt, Germany
Dear brothers, greetings of joy and peace from Ingol-
stadt, Germany!
Here life goes so smoothly under the sober, humane and
fraternal care of our Guardian Br Jose Vettikatt. Our community consists
of five members,
Brs.
Hadrian,
Guido, Wolfgang,
Jose and Sabu. Br
Jose through his
active ministry
and
initiatives
could make our
fraternal presence
here outstanding
one serving to the felt spiritual needs of the people in the
surroundings. Here the priestly ministry and spiritual services is pretty satisfactory, and is well appreciated by the
people.
Daily we have two masses in which more than hundred
people participate. Besides, every day we spend rather reasonable amount of time at confessional and counseling. And
the faithful in the surrounding value it very much. We have
a centre named Oase Der Stille where people can spend
some time in retreat and personal mediation. Many make
use of that opportunity. Other activities of the friary include
an active organization of acolytes and daily evening prayer
service opened for the public. In addition to it, there are
28
demands from the neighbouring parishes and convents for
our spiritual service. For the time being, Br Sabu is rendering his service at Frankfurt. But he will be joining us
soon. Frankfurt being an international city there is greater
demand for our service. There we have a Franciscan community consisting of five brothers.
We were blessed by the fraternal visit of our provincial Br
Thomas Karingada in the month of August. Brs Scaria Kalloor, Roy Joseph, Biju Mathew and Vinod also paid fraternal visit to us. All these were occasions for us to cherish
fraternal love. We are hopefully looking forward for greater
participation from the province for the German personnel
solidarity. Keep us all in your prayers.
We wish you all a happy feast of Our Holy Father St
Francis!

The Steps of Fraternal Correction
Pope Francis
Jesus teaches us that if my Christian brother wrongs me
or offends me, I must be charitable towards him and, first
of all, speak to him personally, explaining that what he has
said or done is not good. And what if my brother does not
listen to me? Jesus suggests a way of intervening gradually:
first, to speak to him again with another two or three people,
so that he is more aware of the mistake he has made. If, in
spite of this, he does not accept this exhortation, it is necessary to tell the community and if he does not even listen to
the community, and then we have to let him know of the
fracture and detachment that he himself has caused, by failing in communion with his brothers and sisters in the faith.
The steps in this itinerary show the strength that the Lord
asks of the community to support those who err, so that they
are not lost.
Above all it is necessary to avoid the clamour of news and
gossip in the community. The attitude must be that of gentleness, prudence, humility and care in relation to those who
have erred, avoiding words that may harm or kill our brother. Because even words can kill! When I gossip or when I
unjustly criticise, when I curse a brother with my tongue,
this means destroying the reputation of the other person. …
At the same time, this discretion in speaking to him alone
has the aim of not pointlessly mortifying the sinner. … In
view of this need, we can understand the following series of
interventions, which include the involvement of other witnesses and finally even the community. The aim is to help
the person to understand what they have done, and to be
aware that they have thereby offended not just one person,
30
but everyone. But it also helps us to rid ourselves of anger
and resentment … that bitterness of the heart that leads to
anger and resentment leads us to insult and offend. It is very
unpleasant to see insults and aggression from a Christian.
… To insult is not Christian.
In reality, before the Lord we are all sinners and all in need
of forgiveness. All of us Indeed, Jesus told us not to judge.
Fraternal correction is an aspect of the love and the communion that should reign in the Christian community; it is
a mutual service that we can and must render to each other
… and it is possible and effective only if each person recognises himself as a sinner and in need of the Lord’s forgiveness. The same awareness that enables me to recognise the
errors of the other, first of all reminds me that I myself have
made, and make mistakes, many times.
Therefore, at the beginning of Mass, we are invited each
time to acknowledge ourselves as sinners before the Lord,
expressing with words and gestures the sincere repentance
of the heart. And Jesus Himself invites all of us, saints and
sinners, to his table, bringing us together at the various
crossroads in in the different situations of our lives. And
among the conditions
that unite all the participants in the Eucharistic
celebration, two are fundamental: we are all sinners, and God offers His
mercy to us all.

the people, such as; sessions for Mission League, classes
for Mothers, unit prayer, choir on feast days and Sundays,
house visiting, tuition for poor children. The encouraging
presence of our parish priest Fr. Noble supports us in all the
activities in the parish. The spiritual guidance of our parish
priest helps us very much in our stay here. Since we are so
close to the colony we have a good opening to them especially through our tuition ministry.

challenging option to be a zealous missionary.
Blessing presence: We were blessed with the spiritual presence of the Bishop of Thalasseri Mar George Valiyamattam, he gave us his blessing and spiritual orientation for our

Mary: Model of Motherly Courage for The
Church
Pope Francis
We do not become Christians by ourselves, of our own
will, autonomously, but rather we are generated and grow
in faith within the great body of the Church, The Church is
truly a mother, a mother who gives life in Christ and who
enables us to live with all our brethren in the communion of
the Holy Spirit.
The maternity of the Church is in continuity with that of
Mary. … The Church, in the fruitfulness of the Spirit, continues to generate new sons and daughters in Christ. The
birth of Jesus from Mary’s womb is indeed the prelude to
the rebirth of every Christian and He is the first-born of a
multitude of brothers. Therefore, we are able to understand
the depth of the relationship between Mary and the Church;
when we look to Mary, we see the most beautiful and most
tender face of the Church; when we look to the Church, we
recognise the sublime features of Mary. We Christians are
not orphans.
The Church is our mother as she gave birth to us in our
Baptism, and, “since that day, like an affectionate mother,
brings us up in faith and shows us, through the strength of
God’s Word, the path of salvation, defending us from evil.
The maternity of the Church is particularly evident in the
service of evangelisation, in which she is “committed, like
a mother, to offering her sons the spiritual nourishment that
nurtures them and renders Christian life fruitful. The path
of salvation, by which the Church guides us and accompanies us with the strength of the Gospel and the support of
the Sacraments, gives us the capacity to defend ourselves
46
against evil, like a courageous mother who protects her
children from danger.
Although God has defeated Satan, he always returns with
his temptations. We must not be ingenuous, but must instead remain vigilant and firm in our faith, with the counsel and the help of the mother Church who ... accompanies
her children in difficult moments. Remember that we all
baptised persons, are the Church, and must not be afraid to
bear witness to this maternity. “Let us entrust ourselves to
Mary”, “so that she may teach us to have the same maternal spirit towards our brethren, with a sincere capacity to
accept, forgive, give strength and infuse trust and hope”.

Padre Pio Ashram Panamaram
Trinitarian Community:
with the arrival of Br. Vincent
Kurisummoottil our fraternity it became Trinitarian because now we are
three.
Our ministry:
Br Mariadas had 3 retreats during the
month of May. His Marian retreat in
Switzerland was very successful and
back to home after having a pilgrimage
to Lourds with his retreat team. After a
heavy schedule of Mission retreats and other retreats Br. Mariadas is here in the house for recuperation during this rainy
season. Even during this off season he preached four more retreats including a retreat for the youth in Pune. Practically, in
many days Br. Paul was alone here and he had to celebrate two
masses almost every day; on certain days even three. Besides,
he is the confessor of several religious communities around
here. Br. Vincent preached two retreats during the month of
May. From June to august he was having some treatment and
taking rest. In the month of September he resumed his ministry of the word of god and preached two retreats including one
to CST Brothers in Angamaly.
Br. Paul is a good gardener and farmer. The beautiful flower garden makes the padre Pio Shrine a paradise. We had a
good crop of Tapioca and bananas. Besides a good number of
robesta plantain is coming up, some started yielding.
One day Convention:
we have decided to have a one day programme on every last
Saturday of the month for the people around us. The inaugural
one was conducted on 30th of August. The convention started
48
at 9.00 with Rosary followed by praise and worship. Rev. Fr
John Puthukkulam, a renowned preacher of the diocese of
Mananthavady, preached and celebrated the Holy Mass. Br
Mariadas conducted an hour of adoration and healing service.
Around 250 people participated and all were served a light
meal at 1.30 PM. We had arranged facility for counselling and
confession. All the services were appreciated by many. Thank
the Lord for making this attempt a success.
Feast celebration:
On 29th June we celebrated the patron’s feast of Br. Guardian.
We had the concelebrated Holy Eucharist at 10.30 am. Br Vincent gave the homily appreciating the person and leadership
of Br Paul. In the evening, around 20 of the youth from the
locality came to wish Br Paul a happy feast. They themselves
prepared tapioca biriyani and all enjoyed it. Our community
celebration was postponed for a couple of days due to the absence of Br Mariadas on the feast day. On 5th July evening we
had our community celebration in which the brothers from Alverna Bathery, Br Devanand from Kappiset and the Pio Bhavan Kalpetta were invited. It was a good get-together.
Feast of the Shrine:
We are now preparing for the joined feast celebration of St
Padre Pio and St Francis on October 2nd. The Novena will begin on 23rd. On the feast day Arch Bishop Mar George Valiyamattam of the Diocese of
Thalassery will celebrate
the Holy Mass.

Vimalagiri Capuchin Ashram, Pattaram
Greetings of peace and joy from Vimalagiri Capuchin Ashram, Pattaram.
Wish you all a very happy feast of our seraphic father, St Francis. May this celebration be an occasion for us to return to the
sources of our Franciscan heritage.
Animation of the souls
Once Padre Pio was asked that how much
does he suffer in his body and mind for the
liberation of the souls. He replayed that he
suffers as if the whole world is on his shoulder. The care of the soul is a tremendous task
that needs real sacrifice and commitment. Vimalagiri community believes that it has entrusted with the liberation of
the souls from the clutches of sin by way of spiritual animation and it is faithful to its mission by the grace of God.
Within these four months we conducted 17 retreats of various kinds and around 3000 people underwent the metanoia
experience, God offered through various spiritual exercises
of the Retreat Centre.
Commemoration of our deceased friars
The bond of fraternal love extends beyond death and we
celebrate that relationship every year commemorating our
brothers who are with God in eternity. Last month we had
two such celebrations, namely the death anniversary of Br
Thomas Thumpeparambil and Br Adolph Kannadipara. The
5th anniversary of the departure of Br Thomas Thumpeparambil has been commemorated on 7th of August. We had
52
Holy Mass and followed by the office for the dead at his
tomb. Many of the relatives of Br Thumpeparambil have
attended the Holy Mass and prayed for the repose of his
soul.
The 1st death anniversary of Br Adolph Kannadipara of
happy memory has been conducted on 15th of August at
Vimalagiri Retreat Centre. On the previous evening, his
spiritual children of S.F.O had gathered for a prayer cession
thanking Almighty for the graces He had showered through
the person of Bro. Adolph. 0n 15th morning a commemoration meeting was held by the S.F.O. Malabar region and
around 250 people attended the same. The Vicar Provincial,
Br George Valiyapadath inaugurated the meeting and Br
Jose Thachukunnel presided over the function. Br Vincent
Kurisummuttil, Br Joby Vattamala and many diocesan and
regional leaders of the S.F.O recollected the holy memory
of our loving father Adolph. At 11.30 we had solemn Mass
and followed by Agape. We felt that we could give fitting
honor to our deceased brothers on the day of their departure
to the home land.
Annual Retreat, Friars meet
We had the privilege of hosting our capuchin brothers of the
province for their annual retreat conducted in the first week of July. Br
Boby Jose Kattikat was the retreat
preacher, and for the same reason
almost all the friars wholeheartedly became part of the retreat. Br
Martinian thanked Br Boby from
the bottom of his heart, representing the sentiments of each and every member of the group. The re53
treat enabled each one to go to the depth of the Gospel and
to the core of Franciscan spirituality.
On 11th of July, after the retreat, all the friars gathered together to evaluate our life and ministry under the leadership of Br Provincial minister and defenitors. It was really
a celebration of our brotherhood. And also it provided us
with the opportunity to know different matters concerning
our province and fraternities. The date of the extra ordinary
chapter was announced on that day and it provided a joyful
hope for a greater celebration of our brotherhood.
Kind Visits
Many of our friars could be part of our community in different occasions and we really appreciate their enhancing
presence with us. Br Provincial and the team members had
made their visit in connection with the planning of the new
project of expanding the Retreat Centre. Provincial also
was kind enough to bring many of our friars from foreign
countries. All of them were wondering at the services we
render in the Retreat Centre, since it is a rare thing in their
country.
Br Johnson Arasseril stayed here one week for the retreat
during his vacation. We all visited his family on the day
of the Jubilee celebration of the wedding of is parents. Br
Cyriac Palakkudy also found time to make his fraternal
visit during his vacation. During the month of July and August we had so many friends from gulf, since it is the summer vacation time there. They all came to pay visit to their
Ex-parish priest, Br Jose Thachukunnel. Since our Ashram
has sufficient guest rooms we could accommodate so many
priests for the retreats. They all appreciated the hospitality
and serenity they received by the stay.

Ministries
The friars are happy with the community life and ministries
they have and all are keeping fine in their health. A bit exception was the vocal code disorder of Br Jose, who underwent
a minor operation for the same. Now everything is ok and
he has regained his old “Royal Voice”. Br Bosco is shining
with his creativities in ministries and, Br Jiji Puliamthottiyil
and Br John Edatt are always in move with busy schedules.
Br Biju Elampachamveetil was busy with writing a hagiographical book on Capuchin saints. The book titled “Padre Pio + 14 Capuchin Visudhar” will be released on 23rd
September at Panamaram Ashram. We have been planning
a meaningful celebration of the feast of our Seraphic Father
and started inviting our friends
around us.
Wish you all
once again a
happy feast and
God’s abundant
blessings.

Bodhi Institute of Theology
Tillery Ashram Thirteen of us from the three
Syro- Malabar provinces and
three C. S. T. brothers started
to travel together in the same
boat in the month of June 2014.
We contemplated on what was
awaiting us in Tillery, Kollam.
Finally, the day came for us to
start from Thellakom to Tillery. The journey lasted for just
three hours and we saw the Kollam Junction board. Brothers, Bibin and Shibin were waiting to receive us in station.
We had a warm reception in Tillery. Fr Peter Poyyathuruthy,
the guardian and rector of the community who himself was
new to the office and Fr. Peter Thomas, the Dean of study
were there to install us to the Bodhi Institute of Theology.
Tillery at a Glance
A bigger Calvary situated beside the town, a house with the
quadrangle full of ripe mangoes and coconuts on the trees
with spacious rooms and wooden corridors in the first floor.
The house appeared to be of real antiquity. The fragrance of
Franciscan prayer and an in depth silence was reverberating
in the natural beauty of the ashram.
Soon to this enthralling atmosphere we could acclimatize
ourselves as friars and brothers created here a very conducive and homely atmosphere for our pleasant stay. On
first of June we had our first conference with our Rector
introduced himself and shared briefly about the ling twenty
five years of pastoral ministry he had abroad. Then we were
56
asked to take up different portfolios.
Beyond the ordinary; the winery of Tillery draws our special attention as the mass wine produced here serves the
purpose of nearly four dioceses and many other religious
houses. It’s well organised systematised and run by the
theologians alone. Thus the brothers deserve a slap on the
back.
New Scholastic Beginning
The knowledge about God, faith and religious orientation
that we received and treasured in our hearts were at times
questioning during the philosophical studies and tested,
sometimes during the exposure- immersion programme.
Now it was a time for us to initiate ourselves into this new
curriculum to develop a strong valid
foundation of faith appealing for
this way of happy life. It is rightly
said, following your heart, because
of you always trust your mind, you
will always act on logic, and logic
does not always lead to happiness.
Well Begun is Half Done…!!
Third of June is marked as our reopening day. With the Irish Provincial Adrian Cuiran as the main celebrant, Fr Xavier Kochurumbil the
vicar provincial of St Joseph Province, Fr Peter the rector and Fr Eeshow Yohanan the vicerector were the concelebrate for the solemn mass. Later, we
had the inaugural ceremony with addresses given by the
dignitaries of the same.
We were kept abreast of the Lectio brevis. In the first semester we had fifteen subjects to be dealt with and most
57
of them dealt by guest professors. Looking back to the
three months here, in a subjective outlook, we had really
a back- breaking job; as within this short span we have to
confront the exams too. Truly, we are still on pins and needles; but in fact these do help to realize our calibre.
Unity in Diversity
The Bodhi institute has in its register forty one academicians, in the current academic year, of which two belong to
FAM, one from FDP, three from CST and the rest belonging
to Kerala Capuchin Provinces.
Celebrate Life…!!!
•St Antony’s feast, falling on 13th June, was the celebration
day of the friary which was preceded by nine days of novena
and due preparation for the same.
•June 30th we had a solemn celebration of the sacred heart
feast, on the occasion Br Jinto CST delivered an enlightening
reflection, on the same.
•The following day marked a differenc e as the house was full
of beans to celebrate the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, which
was also our Rector’s day, thus celebrated at a grand scale.
•Onam was celebrated on Monday 8th of September, as Sunday brothers are out for catechism ministry. Monday from the
early dawn till the break of the day we had a variety entertainment programme followed by a delicious meal and later an
outing in the afternoon. In fact, we had nearly a week long
celebration as on Saturday we were invited to Padre Pio Retreat centre for lunch and on Tuesday the catechism teachers
of Tillery offered us a sumptuous meat.
•The Exaltation of the Cross is a land mark of the Tillery
community as there is a miraculous cross set in the cap58
pella by our elder friars of happy memories, of which we
celebrate the Golden jubilee. Lot of people flocked to the
Cappela, during the three days feast celebration.
•St Francis Province celebrated the Province day in September 17th. It was then the whole children of the province
were privileged to sleep on the lap of their mother, in Tillery.
The day began with flag hosting, followed by crazy games
and then by 11 am the Holy Eucharist was celebrated. In
the absence of the Provincial, his greetings
and message was read
out during the mass
by vicar provincial,
Fr John Baptist and
the homily given by
Fr Alexander Andrews. Soon after
the mass, there
was office for
the dead in the
friary cemetery.
The Province
day was coupled with
the feast of
Fr Robin
Daniel and
birthday
of Fr Bobby Jose
and Br Roniyson, it made the joy of the children doubled.
The whole day was filled with games, entertainments and
the taste of colourful dishes. This was really superb and
great event indeed…!
•We also celebrated the birthday of our Br Vincent Mattathikunnel on August 12th. Dear brother, we recall your
services and love for the community at this occasion and
sincerely wish that you may keep growing with great vision
and enthusiasm.
Discover Your Life
Jurgen Moltmann says, “‘To be alive’ means existing in relationship with other people and things… isolation and lack
of relationship means death for all living things.” Yes, out59
ings provide us the opportunity to relate and better discover
ourselves. We had a one day full outing on the feast of St
Thomas and three half day outings in the semester. Hope
we may be getting that more in Thellakom.
Otta Marathanal
Kollam Assisi this year released a new drama under the able
guidance and producer Fr Albert Cap and the well-known
director Francis Mavellikera. We all watched the release
which was staged on August 21st. It’s really worth watching. Don’t miss it…!
Something to Ponder Over
We had a thought provoking seminar presentation on the
subject-‘Catholic Church in the World and in the future
based on the Teachings of Pastores Dabo vobis’ by Br
Anoop, one of the deacons here, which was moderated by
Fr Joseph Sugun on the 15th of August.
Ten days after, we had an extension lecture taken by Eugine, who is an apologetic and spoke on preserving and safeguarding the Christian Catholic faith.
Sister death…Tribute to the Friars of Happy Memories…
We are sad at the demise of Fr Gratian who lived a very
vibrant and simple life through the yards of Assisi Ashram,
Bharananganam. Two brothers of St Thomas Province and
three deacons from the Province represented the Tillery
community for the funeral in Bharananganam.
It is remarkable
As on every Friday after the evening prayer the whole community in Tillery walk out to the cemetery to extend their
homage to the elderly friars resting in peace.
After the introductory course here in Tillery we are expected
to fly back to Thellakom on October 3rd. The pain of departure has already started overflowing our hearts… we will
60
miss you a lot Tillery…!
Wishing you all the festal greetings of our holy father St
Francis and may the peace of the Lord reign in the high and
low of our communities.
“Sometimes people are beautiful.
Not in looks.
Not in what they say.
Just in what they are.”

Voice from U K
Oh come, Oh come October…
Somebody told us that the summer is going to be prolonged! Sun is brighter than ever before! Cold wind hesitates to blow! Chirping of
the Magpie is on its high
octave! Oaks and Willows
don’t want to shed their yellow blankets! They all sing
and sing, “Oh come, oh come
October…” Yes it is October; a holy season
which brings us lot of nostalgic memories. Our Novena,
Transitus, St. Francis’ feast….. But we don’t really miss it;
because we are not very far from you and neither you from
us. The code of ‘Franciscan Brotherhood’ binds us together
ever so tight.
Celebration of Brotherhood
We were privileged to have both, the Provincial and the Ex
Provincial together, which meant a lot to us in terms of their
brotherly concern and support.
The visit of Br Provincial was obviously a boosting experience to all of us. Though it was a short visit, he made it
very remarkable through qualitative discussions and meetings with
the Arch Bishop Peter,
Bishop Pat, Br Paul the
provincial of the capuchin province in the UK
etc. It is worth acknowledging that the far-sightedness of Br. Saju Pinakkattu,
62
without whose anticipated
intervention these meetings
would not have been possible. Thank you Brother
Provincial for your brotherly care and concern for
each one of us.
Br Scaria Kalloor, as he is
supplying to two parishes
in the Arch Diocese of
Southwark, reached here in August. All the People, young
and old of both the parishes are
highly edified by his exemplary
life and elevating sermons. He
spend most of his time in serious study and research. Thank
you Br Scaria for your company.
Welcome Br. Prince, to the
Land of Princess!
Of course, he has nothing to do
with the princess. We, the friars in the UK are fortunate to
have this zealous, young and
charming brother with us. He
was received at Heathrow International Airport London
in the blessed evening of 30th August 2014. After having
spent a couple of days in London, he proceeded to Scotland. Now Br Prince is the ‘happily living’, ‘self-cooking’,
minor brother at St. Andrew’s Edinburgh in Scotland. He is
settling down well. Let us all wish him everything best!
63
Don’t be Lazy Boys !
After the summer vacation once again we are back to the
universities. Br Saju has presented the final draft of his thesis and now working on its completion. Meanwhile he is invited to be a visiting lecturer on sacred scripture at St.John’s
Major seminary, London which is under the bishop conference of England. Congratulations Br Saju! Br Cyriac
Palakudy has started his study on film making in Met Film
School at Ealing Studio, London. Br Lixon Cyriac, as he is
doing his masters in Psychology, is totally busy with Psycho therapies, Counselling, Workshops, Presentations etc.
Being an expert cyclist he is very familiar with all the nook
and corner of majestic London town. BrPrince Mathew will
be presumably starting his studies this year.
We all, friars in the UK with one voice wish you all every
blessings of the Feast of our father St. Francis.

Collegio San Lorenzo da Brindisi
“Cicero smiled at us “the art of life is to deal with problems
as they arise, rather than destroy one’s spirit by worrying
about them too far in advance, especially tonight.” Robert
Harris, Imperium: A Novel on Ancient Rome
This may be the first and last time i write in Shanthidooth.
By the time it is released Roy will be in India after 2.5 years
of stay and study in Italy. If we are to say our experience
here in Italy in a word it could be “Benissimo” we are really
enjoying our stay and study here.
Language
Language is the key to any country or culture the first few
months of our stay was reserved for the language studies.
All the classes in the universities were in Italian. Though
the language looked so tough in the initial days then became so interesting. At the end we are very happy that we
can celebrate mass and preach homilies in another European Language.!
Collegio San Lorenzo
The collage will be ever in our heart it gives us a unique
65
experience of living in an international fraternity of 120 friars from all over the world. The diverse cultures and tradition
enriches us. Though we were staying in the international college there are two colleges there are two Buses ready at the
entrance of our collage to take us to the various universities!
Food
Though it was very difficult to manage without food for the
breakfast slowly we got accustomed. The pasta, spaghetti,
formaggio etc... became our amici….We used to have Indian food on special occasions for some Indian gatherings and
Kerala food for Kerala gatherings.
Study
Because of the language limitations the first semester seemed
to be too tough. But later became interesting. We used to have
11 to 12 exams in each semester. Roy has finished the licentiate in Spiritual theology with Manga cum Loude and Vinod
need to work hard for another 2 more years.
Vacation
We usually go to various places during the summer vacation
this time we really enjoyed the vacation with the local people
and their shepherds. It is a time to visit the sick to celebrate the
mass and to live with the people like sheep and the shepherd.
Vinod was here in Padua with me for one day we made a visit
to the Sanctuary of St Antony and St. Leopold de Mandic and
to Venezia. Roy was fortunate to visit the Holy Land during
this vacation. !
Boun Viaggio
For me it is time to say good bye…thanks to every one for
giving me this opportunity to stay and study in Rome the Internal City. And best wishes and happy stay to Vinod. The
classes in the universities will resume on the 6th of October.
Wish you all a very happy Feast of St. Francis!

Sevasadan Pallikunnu Kannur
A very happy feast of our Father St Francis to all from
Sevasadan Pallikunnu!
Life goes normally at Pallikunnu. Our two-member community is expanded with the arrival of Br Joby Vattamala.
We welcome Br Joby with fraternal joy to our community.
Ever after his arrival there is new enthusiasm for garden
work and he takes care of the house well. He is entrusted
with the office of economo and garden. We wish him all the
support and happy stay in the community and God’s blessings for all his ministries.
Br Jose our guardian is ever busy with the activities of
the trust. He may the first friar to be ‘father-in-law’ in the
ordinary meaning of the term. Because he was able send a
girl from amalabhaven in marriage. The community offers
prayers both for the ‘father in law’ that he may find good
partners for the rest of his daughters and happy married life
for the newly married couple.
Br Scaria Kalloor is away from the house for ministry in
UK for two months. Then he proceeds to Claremont University, California to present a paper in Christology on 8th of
October 2014. He is the first Indian and the first Capuchin to
present a paper at Process Study Center, Calremont California, USA. It is an Inter National center for the promotion of
Whiteadian Process vision. The community accompanies
Br Scaria with our prayers and wishes him God’s blessings
in his attempt to interpret Christ in a language meaning to
our age.
Wishing you all a very happy feast of our patron and welcoming you all to our little house in the true green field.

Shanthi Ashram, Kundaithode
Shanthi greetings from Kozhikode!
A New Brother
With the arrival of Bro. Peter as the new member, Shanthi
Ashram started changing its overall outlook. There came
from his initiative rabbits, birds, chicks, tortoise, doves
and love birds naturally attracting their enemies mongoose,
snakes and foxes. Bro. Peter took charge of the kitchen,
bringing new taste to our taste buds. With the installation of
Bro. Peter as Assistant Parish Priest, there appeared a new
team of young people dedicated to the activities of KCYM.
Moreover, the small portion of land around the Ashram is
nurtured and new plants are showing up their heads. All
these to the credit of our dear Bro. Peter.
One with the Province
In the month of July all of us attented the retreat organised
by the province at Vimalagiri Renewal Centre Pattaram
and took initiatives to enliven the new insights. Br. Joseph
Charuplackal attended the death anniversary celebration of
our deceased friar Br. Thomas Thumpepparambil.
Brs. Jiby and Peter participated in the Young Friars Meet
organised at Pax Centre Aluva. Br. Joseph attented the 50th
wedding anniversary celebration and house warming ceremony of Palakkudy family at Paduppu, Kasaragod.
Brs Biju Madhavath and George Valiyapadath attended the
death anniversary celebration of Br Adolf Kannadippara.
Minor Infirms
Bro George Valiyapadath was operated upon for a gooseberry size growth behind his head. He got well and resumed
his service in a matter of days. Bro. Biju Madhavath went
for a naturopathic treatment for 15 days at Irritty and is
68
back, rejuvenated. Br. Joseph Charuplackal was admitted
in the hospital for a couple of days due to chest infection.
Bro Peter had a minor accident and got injured due to a skid
of the bike.
Community Meetings and Gatherings
On August 1st we had a Commmunity meeting in which
brothers shared the life in fraternity and took decision to
improve the fraternal aspect of our life. On August 27, Capuchin Zonal Bi-monthly meeting was organised at our
Ashram. Br. Joseph Charuplakkal presented a paper and
lead the discussion on “the grace of working”. The discussion continued even after dinner extending to late night.
The dinner that night needs special mention. There were
no dishes of any meat of fish, but only vegitables. Someone
commented, “Today we have no ‘mamsa dyanam” Eveyone
enjoyed the light moment.
Our local chapter in the month of August discussed on the
celebration of St. Francis feast. All of us felt that it would
be appropriate to invite some of our neignbouring religious,
priests and nuns. The local chapter evaluated our prayer life
as well as our manner of working and decided for greater
efforts to overcome our failures.
Thanks Guests
There were many friars from both within and outside the
Province who visited us and stayed with us. Thank you all
for your visits and we welcome you to feel free to join us as
you travel via Kozhikode.

pipes and tin sheets. Meanwhile the construction has been
going on we shifted our kitchen and dinning to the ground
floor which was flooded with rainwater. The work is expected to be completed in the month of October.
72
We gratefully remember our regent brothers who helped us
in doing all the activities at Shanti Bhavan during this monsoon. They came in two batches for fifteen days each. They
