Fasting (one full meal and two lighter meals) obligates all Catholics from the age of 18—59. Besides Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. WHY ASHES? The Church invites us to receive a cross of ashes on our foreheads as a sign that during the coming season of Lent, we will make sincere efforts to cleanse our lives of sin and to discipline ourselves through prayer and fasting and almsgiving. PETER PENCE COLLECTION– Participation in the Peter’s Pence collection affords each of us an opportunity to serve as witnesses of charity to our brothers and sisters around the world. Gifts to this annual collection assist our Holy Father in supporting the victims of war, natural disasters, and other most in need of assistance. Please be generous in the Peter’s Pence Collection which will take place on this weekend. 20-WEEK CLUB WINNER– The 16th winner of $100 in our 20 -Week Club was No. 60 Barbara Brennan and our 17th winner was No. 12 Barbara Renner. ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING- Will take place on Monday, February 8th at 7:45 PM. All who would like to help in the fund/fun raising endeavors of our parish are welcome to attend. SOUPER BOWL- It is said that Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest party day of the year. Lots of food and drink as you watch the football game. So, as you feast on your chicken wings, please think of those who may not have even a bowl of soup to nourish them. One dollar a person – as you leave Mass on Super Bowl Sunday weekend, February 6th & 7th – will help our Food Pantry to feed the hungry. Make it a super “souper” bowl. POT LUCK DINNER AUCTION– Will be held here at St. John’s on March 5th following the 5 PM Mass. We are accepting donations for the auction of new, gently used, re-gifted, gift certificates, or services. Please drop them off in the church kitchen no later than February 29th. If you are planning to attend, please contact Sharon Greth at 332-8380 or [email protected] to make your reservation. At that time, please also let her know what Pot Luck item you will be bringing to share. We are looking forward to having another successful Dinner/Auction! OPEN HOUSE– Kingston Catholic School will host an Open House, as well as their Annual Science Fair immediately following their 9:30 AM Mass on Sunday, February 7th from 10:30 to noon. Please join them to learn more about their valuesinfused education, academic programs and extra-curricular enrichment. FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in the Good God, This coming Wednesday, February 10th, will be Ash Wednesday and the start of the Holy Season of Lent. Lent runs from Ash Wednesday through the daytime hours of Holy Thursday. It is a period of 44 days which includes the 40 days of Lent rooted in Sacred Scripture or the Holy Bible. There is Ash Wednesday and then the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday after Ash Wednesday and then the First Sunday of Lent begins the remaining 40 of the total of 44 days of Lent. The “40 Days of Lent” stems from the two 40 day periods that Moses fasted from food and water as he received the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai or Mount Tabor (known by both names). It also recalls the 40 years that the people of Israel wandered in the desert before they entered the Promised Land. In the first year of their journey, the Israelites scouted the Promised Land for 40 days but then the scouting party would not trust God to deliver them into the Promised Land and so God punished His People to wander in the desert one year for each day they had scouted. The only exceptions were Joshua and Caleb. (Speaking of scouting, this Sunday we will celebrate Scout Sunday at the 8:30 A.M. Holy Mass). Finally, this period of Forty Days stems from the forty days Christ spent in the desert fasting and praying after His baptism by Saint John the Baptist and before He began His public ministry that would lead to the events of Holy Week. For all of Christianity, it is a time of penance: fasting, extra prayer, and extra works of charity. Please let us try to the best of our ability to put these Lenten penances into practice. Please remember that those of us who are 14 years of age and older are to practice Abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. Also, please remember that those of us who are ages 18 through 59 are to Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday; we are to have only one full meal and two lesser meals that don’t equal a full meal. These practices are to be done in a substantial way without being injurious to our health. Of course, additional practices of mortification are encouraged if one is able to accomplish them. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask yours truly. The schedule for Ash Wednesday is as follows: 8:30 A.M. Holy Mass with blest ashes distributed, a 4:00 P.M. Liturgy of the Word Service with blest ashes distributed, and 7:00 P.M. Holy Mass with blest ashes distributed. It is the mind of the Church that we should attend and pray at one of those three Liturgies so please let us all do our best to be at the Church by 8:30 A.M., 4:00 P.M., or 7:00 P.M. This weekend will be “Souper Bowl” Sunday; it is the one time of the year that members of our Parish Community Action and our Parish Food Pantry are at the doors of the exits of the Church to collect our monetary donations for permitting Community Action/Food Pantry folks to purchase food throughout the year to help to feed our less fortunate brothers and sisters of our neighborhood. I want to thank Community Action and Food Pantry members for doing this ministry for us and I wish to express my gratitude for your generosity toward the doing of the First Corporal Work of Mercy, namely, Feeding the Hungry. This Sunday, February 7th, from Noon until 1 P.M., I will conduct the Instructional Prayer Meeting. The topic will be: The Our Father or The Lord’s Prayer. You are most welcome to join us and learn some things one might not have known about a prayer many of us learned when we were little. The Advisory Committee for Parish Development will meet this coming Monday evening, February 8 th, at 7:45 P.M. in the Church Hall. Instead of tossing whatever is leftover in the collection basket, I consciously take the first and best I have and wrap it up in the envelope, because I know it is a special gift to the Lord. I find I am more generous with God in all aspects of my life now. PASTOR’S COMMENT– One of the nicest things about tithing is that no one knows.
