It was a great night, people loved the band and Donna Huber was a fantastic performer. During the month of April, we are hosting a couple of great outside events that are open to the public. On Friday, April 8, 2011 the St. Brigid’s School Auction is here. This is a fundraiser for the school and they have exceptionally nice auction items, a buffet dinner and cash bar, doors open at 5:30p.m. The price is $32.00 per person, contact is [email protected] for tickets. The other event we are hosting is Saturday, April 30, 2011, it is, “Dancing With The Community”, this is a fundraiser for the “Fit to Live” program at South Portland recreation department, a program for seniors. The entertainment is kind of like a dancing with the stars competition, featuring the following celebrities: Kevin Scott (2010 candidate for Governor) and Ann Smith, Jill Duson (former Portland Mayor) and Sergie Slussky, Robert Lynch, (Prominent Chiropractor) and Johanna Welch, Barbara Joyce( Italian Heritage Center First Lady) and John Davis, Dr. Vern Weisberg, and Elizabeth Richards. This event includes an Italian Buffet and cash bar, and the entertainment of the dancers! Price is $40.00 per person, doors open at 6:00p.m., for tickets call Patty Medina at 767-2844. The March wine specials will be continued in to April, due to popular demand! Last month we started to plan a Wedding, and now we will continue. For review, we have secured the church and reception hall, sent out save the date invitations, and talked about basic etiquette tips. We are okay for now, yet there is a question that I have been asked more lately than ever that has come up. What are the responsibilities of the groom and his parents? The following is a list of (traditionally) what to expect to pay for: Engagement ring and wedding rings for the Bride Wedding gift for the Bride Gifts for the groomsmen Marriage License and Officiates fee Groom’s Attire Boutonniere’s for the Grooms attendants Transportation/Limousine service (commonly a shared expense) The Honeymoon Bride’s Bouquet, Mother’s Corsages, (alternately included with floral, paid by Bride’s family) The Rehearsal Dinner The rehearsal dinner should include all members of the bridal party and their spouses, any out of town guests, grandparents. The groom’s parents are responsible for booking the venue, providing food and beverage, facilitating any activities, including toasts during dinner. This is a big question, the guest list! The parents of the groom will provide the list of names and addresses to the parents of the bride. The parents of the bride will likely tell them prior how many invitations are available for each side of the family. Etiquette dictates the grooms’ parents will stay within this limit. Of course, there are situations where one family is much larger than the other. I cannot stress how important it is to establish a relationship early on with the new in-laws to be! This will save a lot of stress as the date approaches! As you can see, if both sides are on a good communication basis, the details and shared things I commonly see misconstrued should be able to work out. It is a good idea as soon as an engagement happens, that the groom’s family invite the new in-laws to be for dinner, meet (if they have not already) and figure out early on who is paying for what. It is nice to send a note to the bride and the Mother of the bride welcoming them to the family. In this economy, and with the classic traditions changing, it is well advised to make the communication effort early on. Many of the bride’s and groom’s today are paying for much of their own expense. We will keep planning next month! They ruled Florence and survived two rebellions. There were also two popes from this infamous family. Catherine de Medici was the Duchessa of Florence, heir to the powerful throne of Florence. Her uncle Pope Clement was nearly overthrown from his position. To appease his enemies and retain his papacy, he agreed to marry his niece to Henri the Prince of France. Henri eventually became the King of France. This historical novel tells the tale of Catherine's imprisonment in Florence as a young child, her dabbling in astrology and her reign as one of the most powerful woman in Europe. I had hoped to learn more about the de Medici family but was still impressed with this book. Upcoming Concerts Sunday, May 1st - 2 pm - Spring Concert at the Italian Heritage Center - we will be performing many of the songs from our recently recorded CD for members of the Center and the general public.
