September 2015 PRST STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT #64 PORTLAND, ME 04101 Issue No. 0915 40 Westland Avenue Portland, ME 04102 To: Our President’s Message . Now that summer is coming to an end and the kids are going back to school, and our scholarship winners are heading off to college, (good luck to them), it is time to head back down to the Cantina for our fall events: Italian Movie Night, Trivia, Carne Shoot, Bocce, Gin, Karaoke, theme night and other great things. Thank you Dianne Procida for heading our Charity Committee for many years. We wish you luck in your fabulous journey to Italy with your daughter, son-in-law and two grandbabies stationed in Naples, Italy. We will miss you as a friend and caring Italian Heritage Center member. Great job !!!! I am pleased to announce that Kathy Paquette has accepted the position as Charity Chairperson. I know she will do an excellent job. Maine Fiber Company has informed me that they are not planning to pursue a Land Lease Agreement with the Italian Heritage Center at Congress St. and Westland Ave. at this time, but will retain the IHC lease option for the allowable term (12 months). I would like to welcome our newest members to the Italian Heritage Center. They are: Maria & Nate Nelson, Jean E. Bowden, Anthony C. Carnevale, Betsy B. Kyle; Dennis Healy and Alexandra Hunziker. Please enjoy what the IHC has to offer. As always, I would like to thank all of our members for your continued support. I can tell you a big part of it is that it is comfortable here, in that the heart and soul of this business truly exists. Recently, I had a corporate client tell me they go to many different cities to hold functions, and it was clear that this place was different; the staff genuinely care and it just had a "good feeling". Local people and repeat clients come for celebrations and know that this is not just a lounge or a function hall, but it is family oriented. We embrace community and do all to help. It is comprised of people that come together to make every party the best it can possibly be. It is comprised of members who come here and play gin, have a social time, rely and depend on each other as time passes. I stand in these rooms and feel the memories, years of them. I wonder how many times peoples thoughts gravitate to a room, a time, a life changing event. So many memories; happy times, a bride dancing with her groom for the first time as a married couple. A family coming together to honor a life. A crazy groomsmen that does not realize he has had a wee bit too much to drink as he entertains bystanders. The suspense of a tiered cake that is leaning way too far to the right. The little girl with blond curls scuffing up the dance floor as though no one else exists; it’s just her, a tiny dancer. Does she close her eyes and remember her debut years from now? Reliving that time? I think so. There is so much here, not just bricks and steel, but a uniqueness woven over the years that creates something that can not be reproduced, and all of the people, past and present have created this tapestry. Forgive me, it is a melancholy day. Hopefully, I have answered the question. Kimberly McDonough, Manager Membership News Members for Vote . . . Cammy Reali Activities Committee IHC Family Festival – A Hit!! Cloudy skies and a threat of rain did not dampen the spirits of the 300+ kids, parents, grandparents and IHC members who attended the 1st IHC Family Festival on July 26. While most of the activities moved indoors, the pony rides and water slide were busy all day long outside despite the weather. The kids, and even a few adults, had a ball riding the water slide! Months of planning certainly paid off as the event went off without any bumps. My heartfelt thanks to all who made this a truly memorable event: Kathy & Carl Paquette, Barbara Pileggi, Butch Gagnon, Joe & Carol Ferrante, Julie Ann Johnson & Jeff Rose, John & Donna Rague, Bob & Gloria Lax, Ann Nappi, Steve Corey, Nikki Cox, Mary Distasio, Susan Smythe, Julie Morin, Martha Milton, Mary Ann Proulx (and her sister), Ron & Darlene White, Adele Harnois, Maureen Sidelinger, Julie Brown, Sandy Smith, Cammy & Frank Reali, Karen Emerson, Vicki Dunn, Ed & Phyllis Miller, Marie Pardi, John Dascanio, Bruno Siniscalchi, Peter Doria, Ryan Hutchins, Melissa Martin & Bill Lucatuorto, Darlene Smith, and those who jumped in at the last minute to help: Marianne Reali, Anna Geary, Christine Ferrante, Mary Taliento, Mary Ann McDaniels, Benita Anderson and of course, King Pin (Chris Grassi, Brad Harnois, Dave Rabideau) who had the DaVinici Room rocking all day, and into the night!! A special thanks to the IHC staff who worked Sunday to help us out: Bob, Megan, Liz, Tiffany, Stacey, Becky and Kim (yes, Kim and a few of her staff also enjoyed the water slide before all the guests arrived). And finally to Chef Ann and Chef Jeremy for their assistance in having everything ready for us Sunday morning when we arrived. Family Festival Sponsors to the Rescue! Our 1st IHC Family Festival would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. We far exceeded our goal of $1,500 -- $2,325 helped to underwrite our Festival and make it a fun event for kids of all ages. We are truly grateful for their generosity!! If you haven’t been to a 1st Thursday Happy Hour, you don’t know what you are missing!! Back in January, the Board of Directors voted to allow a food budget so that La Cantina could be the site for 1 st Thursday Happy Hours for our members and their guests. The Activity Committee was given a 3-month trial run; and because of the overwhelming response, it was voted to continue with the Happy Hours until it no longer was profitable. Based on the crowd in August, Happy Hour will continue for many more months to come – it was standing room only!! The Activity Committee would like to express its heartfelt thanks to Chef Ann, who every month puts out a sumptuous buffet of appetizers, and to the staff who keep the buffet table full throughout the evening: Megan, Liz and Bob. And to our bartenders Stacey and Steve. We are a HAPPY crowd!! September - First Thursday Happy Hour in La Cantina Summer is at an end, but there is no end to the fun in store in La Cantina. Based on the International Best-Selling Mysteries by Andrea Camilleri, Luca Zingaretti stars as Detective Montalbano in Episode 4, “The Mystery of the Terra Cotta Dog”. With a Mafia Kingpin who wants to talk, a menacing hit man and a secret cavern, Detective Montalbano has his hands full. Everything seems to point to a half-century old crime. Movie is in Italian with English subtitles. Very brief, tasteful nudity and a little salty Italian language. Donations accepted to defray the cost of DVDs. Join us for snacks and a contemporary Italian film. __________________________________________________________________________________ Coming up in October OCTOBER ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT Saturday, October 10th, 7:00 pm in the Cantina “Mediterraneo” Oscar winner for best International film of 1992 is both comic and an atypical love story set in a Greek Island during WWII.
