What is your perfect day? A morning round of golf, an afternoon cookout with my family on the Maine Coast and an evening dancing with my lovely bride at the IHC. 2. If you’re not a Maine native, what brought you here? Born and bred on Munjoy Hill and proud of it. I've lived in Maryland and Virginia and been all over the rest of the USA and there's nowhere from which I'd rather be. 3. What book are you currently reading? The Fault is in Our Stars" (Colpa Delle Stelle), in Italian. " A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson in English. 4. Who is your favorite musician? Hands down best singer is Frank Sinatra. Emmy Lou Harris is second. Favorite musicians are Artie Shaw, Harry James, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa and the guy who plays "Blurred Lines". 5. What if any causes do you support and why? There are so many. But mainly any cause that helps the underprivileged, victims of war (including our own military in need), Doctors Without Borders and promotion of World Peace. 6. What person living or dead inspires you the most and why? Aside from my family members, Chuck Yeager. He came up from humble beginnings in West Virginia with scant education to enlist as mechanic in Army Air Corps during WWII. Became a top flying ace, got shot down over enemy territory in France, escaped by foot over the Pyrenees and returned to the fray. Became our top test pilot after the war where he flew the perfect engineering envelope on experimental planes, was first man to break the sound barrier in 1947, flew the X-15 into the stratosphere to experience weightlessness, returned to fly in Korea, flew on special assignments for our government. He was slighted by not being picked for our nascent space program because he didn't have a college degree. As a General he flew a bit in Vietnam. Chuck did more in a few weeks of his life than most of us do in a lifetime. Chuck Yeager has the "Right Stuff" and has been my inspiration to do the best I can in all I do. 7. What is your favorite all time movie? The Graduate, not only because I loved it but because it started a whole new approach to moviemaking. It also was the first to use a singing group (Simon and Garfunkel) as the soundtrack. Who can forget the line "Plastics Benjie, plastics"? Running close behind are "From Here to Eternity", "Shane", and " The African Queen". 8. What is your favorite place in Maine? Stonington on Deer Isle. I never lived there or spent much time there, but it's the first place my father settled in Maine. He worked in the quarries there and didn't have as much time as I do to enjoy the beauty of the town. Second is any golf course. 9. What is your favorite Italian food? Handmade Gnocchi with a little meat on the side with insalada to follow. And Pizza Ricotta with chocolate chips for dessert. 10. If you could have any job (other than your current job) what would it be? I'm a retired engineer, but I would have liked to have been a teacher. It's noble to have an influence on our young in a positive way and guide them to their goals. Avere la Botte Piena e la Moglie Ubriaca : To have the wine cask full and the wife drunk: In America we’d say “to have your cake, and eat it too”. Do you like the literal Italian better? If you would like to be the next Take 10 feature, contact Kim Toppi at [email protected] or call 329-0845. Committee News IHC Concert Band Performs . . . KEEPING UP WITH THE CULTURE COMMITTEE NOVEMBER MOVIE NIGHT Saturday, November 1, 7:00 pm “The Sicilian Girl” A History of Baroque Roman Art This movie recounts the true crime story of Mafia daughter Rita Atria who took her own life into her hands to break the code of silence and testify against “the Family” in 1991. However she finds the side of Italian Law and Order to be a dark and lonely place which puts her convictions to the test-and her own life on the line. Sunday, November 9, 2:00 pm, DaVinci Room Free Admission, Refreshments A Multimedia Event presented by UMO Professor Michael Grillo Enjoy an afternoon steeped in the Italian Culture of the Baroque Period, a period of artistic style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting and architecture.
