This has been an historic term for the college, given our move to become an 11-16 school and I am very proud of the work undertaken across the college to get us to this point in time. Working in a dynamic secondary school is exciting, but challenging and to add 11-16 preparation to everyone’s workload has examined our resilience individually and as a college. The response from members of staff has met the high expectations of our governors and I would like to thank them all on behalf of yourselves and your children. They certainly deserve to have a restful festive period. Mr Chris Southall , Principal I am also delighted with the response from the vast majority of our pupils. Our Year 10 cohort has made a very encouraging start to GCSE study and pupils are responding to the high targets set for them. Where this is not the case, we have been in communication with parents/carers and have discussed how we can work together to create a bright future for all our pupils. I would also like to congratulate all other year groups for their hard work this term and particularly Year 7 pupils who have made a good start to life at Brockington. On Wednesday and Thursday of the penultimate week of term, we received an inspection conducted by the Church of England. As we were outstanding at our last inspection, we were given a five year period to the recent inspection. One inspector visited to inspect the quality of Religious Studies; Collective Worship; Leadership and Management and Christian Distinctiveness. The verbal feedback that we received was extremely positive, but we have to wait until the official report is received to feedback to everyone. I will forward the actual report to you in January. Thank you for your support this term. We always appreciate your kind comments and your willingness to work with us when issues do arise. Have a lovely time together as a family over the festive period. School Uniform We have become increasingly concerned about the standard of uniform worn by a minority of pupils. The issues are mainly around extremely tight fitting skirts and are mainly in Year 9 and Year 10. We have again spoken to all pupils about this matter and we will insist upon our uniform standards being met after the holiday. Please refer to the school website http://www.brockington.leics.sch.uk/category/parents/school-uniform/ for details of our school uniform and agreed retailers. We would expect correct uniform items to be purchased during the holidays, for any pupil spoken to about uniform in the last week of term. Thank you in anticipation of your support. Brockington Bulletin | December 2015 Edition | Page 1 Introduction Reminders fromand the News Principal Pupil Safety It would be a great help to the environment and to child safety, if your child is able to travel to and from school on foot, by cycle or by bus. If this is not possible, we would ask you to consider car sharing and lifts by car on limited occasions. If you do have to pick up or drop off children, it is essential that you park in the designated areas only and not on the perimeter of the school car park, which obstructs others and creates danger for pupils. Please also be very careful when driving near to or on the school premises as we all know that children can be very unpredictable. Please remember that vehicles should only be driven through the barrier to the main college entrance if absolutely necessary. Drivers should be mindful of the 5 mph speed restriction and proceed with caution, especially just before and after school, to ensure the safety of our pupils as they walk along the driveway. Thank you. Voice It As a result of our ‘Anti-Bullying Survey’ back in 2012 we launched two new ‘Voice It’ systems to make it easier for pupils to log concerns about bullying, anti-social behaviour and any other concerns they may have in and around the college. The systems have proven to be highly successful and are used on a regular basis. To find out more, or to log a concern, please visit http://goo.gl/j4Sl4n. Summary of Issues this year 1 issue on the school bus: Dealt with by Pastoral Manager/ Head of Year Parents As Partners Please take a few minutes to have a look over our newly created ‘Parents as Partners’ blog to get the latest information on what you can do to help your child. To view the latest tips please visit :http://www.brockington.leics.sch.uk/2015/12/december-2015/ House Netball Results End of Term Arrangements for Pupils School will close for the Christmas holidays at 12.30 pm on Friday 18 December 2015. The school buses will arrive for this time and will depart at approximately 12.45 pm. Due to the earlier finish, only cold ‘grab and go’ lunches will be available on this day. Pupils who would like a ‘grab and go’ lunch, including those who receive free school meals, must place their order at break time and collect their lunch as they depart at 12.30 pm. Year 9 Stuart We appreciate that the early finish may create childcare issues for some parents/carers. Therefore, there will be the facility for any child to stay in school and be supervised until 3.10 pm, although there will be no school buses at this time. Please read the letter on the link below and via the website and return the reply slip to the school office if you would like to make use of this facility. For any pupils staying at school until 3.10 pm, we would ask that they report to the library immediately after classes are dismissed and that they order a cold ‘grab and go’ lunch or bring a packed lunch with them. Overall Stuart A copy of the letter regarding end of term arrangements can be viewed on the link:http://www.brockington.leics.sch.uk/2015/12/end-of-term-arrangements-2/ Lost Property Items of lost property are taken to the main college reception. Named items can be returned to the rightful owner. Lost property is now displayed outside the main college reception at lunch times, giving pupils a daily chance to reclaim any missing items. Parents/carers who wish to come and view lost property should telephone reception (0116 2863722) to make arrangements to come and do so after college. Due to the volume of lost property, anything remaining after two weeks will be donated to charity. PE KIT Can pupils remember to bring ALL their equipment and PE kit on the day they need it. Telephone calls home will not be made for forgotten kits and equipment. The PE department has some items of sports wear that pupils may borrow. Please make sure all PE kit is named. Thank you. Mrs F Clarke Brockington Bulletin | December 2015 Edition | Page 2 Radio Leicester 104.9 FM and where possible via our Text Messaging System Introduction from the Principal News Leicester Cathedral - Key Stage 2 Christmas Service RS News On Monday 7 December, Daisy, Charlotte, Freya, Ruby, Hallie, Mia, Lucy and myself were chosen to perform some stylised drama and a scripted piece at Leicester Cathedral in front of school children in the Diocese. The reason for this was to understand the journey that Mary and Joseph took in order to get to Bethlehem. Christmas Carol Service Brockington pupils are to attend a Carol Service at Enderby Parish Church on Thursday 17 December. A variety of pupils from different year groups will lead the service alongside members of Enderby Parish Church. This year for the first time, our pupils will be leading four services as we now have Year 10. We will have a vocal group and orchestra performing as well as pupils giving readings and leading prayers. First of all, we performed a stylised piece of drama, then had some congregational singing with Brockington singing the loudest (of course)! The Bishop then said a few words and we performed another stylised drama piece. After, all of the children of the Diocese had to put a piece of paper in the pots as to where they were born, North, South, East or West. We then performed our scripted piece of the Bethal Inn where we all worked in an inn and Mary and Joseph visited. When we had finished that we processioned out and stood at a shed were the manger was laid and the Bishop said a few more words. Later, we walked to St Martins House where we ate our lunch. I really liked it because we were doing something different and were involved a lot in the making of the production. By George Bryan (9R) It is a lovely way to end such a great Autumn Term in preparation for the Christmas holidays. Mrs McKenzie and Miss Styles Non-Uniform Day Friday 18 December Brockington Christmas Show On the last day of term, for the second year in a row, there will be a Christmas Jumper NonUniform Day to help raise money for the Charity ‘Save the Children’ (a non profit Christian humanitarian relief organisation dedicated to help alleviate the suffering of children and their families around the world). We will split the money raised between this great charity and our Kash4Kenya and South Africa team to assist them in their fundraising for their visit this summer. Thank you in anticipation, to all pupils, staff and our community for supporting us on this day and raising money for such amazing causes. On Thursday 10 December, the Brockington Christmas show was performed by the students of Brockington College. We had all spent a lot of time practising for the performance. We were out of lessons Thursday going over everything, rehearsal after rehearsal. By this time, the teachers were getting VERY stressed and the students were getting tired. I was singing as part of vocal group and performing in a drama piece. Orchestra were performing also. Periods 4 and 5 were dedicated to a dress rehearsal. At 6.00 pm, the students arrived to rehearse one last time and then at 7.00 pm, the doors were open to the audience. Many stalls had been set up in the courtyard to help raise money for Kash4Kenya and South Africa. A group of pupils will be travelling there in July 2016 to help build a school and help many people. All in all, the Performing Arts Department raised £390.00 which is going towards a new electric piano and a free standing spotlight. I had a fantastic night performing and loved it!! By George Bryan (9R) Mrs McKenzie Brockington College Enrichment Programme Spring Term 2016 Summer Musical - Auditions is now available on the Brockington website and the following link This year’s summer musical will be announced after Christmas with the audition material being released on Monday 11 January. Auditions will take place throughout the week of Monday 25 January and we will aim to let pupils know the cast list before we break for half term. Over the past two years we have staged ‘Annie’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ This year we have selected a different musical altogether and I am sure it will spark the interest of our actors, musicians, vocalists and dancers! http://www.brockington.leics.sch.uk/2015/12/spring-2016-enrichment-programme/ Miss Styles Brockington Bulletin | December 2015 Edition | Page 3 News More News & Reminders Governor Update Literacy at Brockington Literacy Stars for this Term: It has been a real privilege to serve as Chair of Governors for the previous six years. I want to assure parents/carers and pupils that the Principal, all staff and the governing body have worked tremendously hard during this time. I have absolutely no doubt that the school will be very successful as an 11-16 school and I would like to thank parents/carers for their support in all the changes that have been made over the years and for their continued confidence in the school. Be assured that the governing body along with Mr Southall and the teaching staff will work tirelessly to ensure that Brockington pupils receive the best support to achieve excellent grades at Key Stage 4. On a recent visit to the college to observe the safe entry of pupils into the building at the start of the school day, I was very impressed that pupils managed to access their lockers and be in their classrooms within 10 minutes! Everything was done in a safe, controlled and orderly way and pupils waited patiently in corridors if they could not get to their lockers immediately. This is a real credit to our Christian ethos and values of the school in action. I am immensely proud of the calm but business like atmosphere within the school every time I visit. Finally, I would like to wish all pupils, staff, parents/carers and my fellow school governors a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Fifty Book Pledge Visit from Zoolab Students and staff are encouraged to take part in Fifty Book Pledge, a challenge to read fifty books over the school year. House points are awarded for books read and certificates have just been announced for those already at ten books or more. All students that read fifty or more books by the end of the school year will enter a prize draw for a Kindle Fire. As part of their studies on adaptation and evolution, Year 10 science students spent time looking in detail at various animals. A company called Zoolab visited college bringing with them a variety of invertebrates and mammals. These included Sophie the snake, Tara the tarantula, Rita the rat, Gail the gecko and Carla the cockroach! The information given about how the animals survive was fascinating and plenty of students took the opportunity to have a cuddle! They spent the morning at Pembroke College (Leicestershire’s link college). The pupils experienced a talk and a guided tour with a current undergraduate. Next, they spent some time exploring the exhibits at the Whipple Museum (History of Science). The afternoon session was spent in the Old Library at St John’s. Pupils took part in a ‘Be the Curator’ workshop. They had the chance to learn about Samuel Butler by looking at the private collection he bequeathed to St John’s. Pupils had to itemise and label the items before selecting five that they felt told a story about an aspect of Butler’s life. Pupils were a credit to themselves and the school throughout the day. Well done Year 9s. Mr Green Oxford University On Tuesday 8 December, fifteen lucky Year 9 students attended the famous ‘Christmas Lectures’ based in the Natural History Museum at Oxford University in the company of Mr Higham and Mrs Wright. This event enabled pupils to see Maths and Science in action and the experience of attending such a profound University. The first talk by Dr Thomas Wooley took a humorous and energetically delivered interpretation of the mathematics behind zombies invading the Earth and taking over humans. Despite the bizarre concept, the students were gripped by the mathematical models used to explain the diffusion of zombies and the speed with which humans needed to travel to escape capture! The second talk by Dr Nick Tosca examined the mineral make up of the Martian surface of the planet Mars. The talk looked at NASA’s recent launch of a Rover module on the planet, which cost in excess of a billion dollars. The physics behind its launch and travel into space through a restrictive atmosphere was examined and exclusive footage of the successful landing was shown. The information on the mineral structure of the surface of some of its craters and the geological significance of water once being present led to debate and enthusiastic discussion about the potential for life on Mars. An excellent day was had by all students who thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of visiting this University and experiencing the research prospects that both Science and Mathematics hold. Mr Higham On Tuesday 8 December Year 9 and Year 10 students made a visit to the Clothes Show, at Birmingham NEC exploring careers and fashion trends. Opportunities and Highlights for the day: Fashion Show Career Seminar Graduate Stands Design Sampling And some shopping Pupil comments: “Wow, the fashion show was amazing. It was great looking at current trends and fashion forecasts” Isobella Fortnam-Tomlinson (10B) “Inspirational and buzzing full of lots of ideas!” Mille Reed (10C) A huge thanks to students for being totally great and representing the school in a very professional manner. Mrs Chauhan Snow White Pantomime Trip Over forty Year 8 and 9 pupils attended the annual pantomime trip led by Mrs Hawthorne. This year pupils watched Snow White at the De Montfort Hall on the afternoon of Monday 14 December. The show was a great success and pupils enjoyed the audience participation. This month congratulations to: Competition Time Food Technology Achievements How Will You Hear Me? Film Project: Two talented young actors in Year 9, Daisy Nicholson and Andrew Moran, were fortunate to be selected to be involved in a film project. The film project called ‘How Will You Hear Me’ is a collection of young people’s stories, each scene concentrates on an individual young person and their experience of interaction with a professional, it gives some context to their life, and then the young person shares the impact of not being heard, or not being understood, or shares insight to good practice around youth voice. The film was premiered recently and both students were able to go along and watch their performance on the big screen. A huge congratulations to them both and good luck for your future projects.
