The African Diaspora-Baltimore Style
2-Day/2-Night
Day 1
Begin your day at newly opened Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African
American History & Culture and share in the courageous journeys toward freedom and selfdetermination made by African-American Marylanders. Afterwards, you will be met by a tour
guide of Renaissance Productions and Tours, Baltimore’s premiere African American Tour
Company, who will lead you on a fascinating expedition of Baltimore’s authentic treasures:
i.e. the NAACP National Headquarters; the Orchard Street Church, site of an
Underground Railroad station; St. Frances Academy, the nations oldest African-American
educational institution; the Eubie Blake Cultural Arts Center; and the President Street
Station, from where slaves were mailed to freedom. During the tour, you will dine on a traditional “Shoe-Box” lunch reminiscent of the days of segregation when African Americans
were not allowed to sit at lunch counters. Following the narrated tour, we’ll visit Mahogany
Exchange, a colorful bazaar of African clothing, textiles, and artifacts. Conclude the evening
with jazz and dinner at the New Duffy’s Restaurant or the New Haven Lounge, voted
Baltimore’s Best for Jazz.
Day 2:
Arrive at the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, America’s first wax museum dedicated
to people of the African Diaspora. Next, we will visit the Carl Murphy Fine Arts Center on
the campus of the historic Morgan State University. Housed at the Center are: the James E.
Lewis Art Museum; the Turbin-Lamb Theater; the Opera Workshop; and the worldrenowned Morgan State University Choir and Band. Partake in a Jamaican smorgasbord at
Ras Doobie de Chef. Enjoy a performance at the Arena Playhouse, the oldest AfricanAmerican theater in the United States. We cap the evening with more Caribbean delectable
and a carnival atmosphere at the popular Blue Caribbean.

The Back-Country Tour
Day Trip (6 Hours)
Imagine rural farm life in the 19th-century as you arrive at the Carroll County Farm
Museum. Lively history is on the mind of the costumed guide as she escorts the group
through the main house. Self-directed choices abound on the grounds of the 140-acre site,
and a stroll in the old-fashioned garden may follow. Craft demonstrations may include
pottery, wood carving, or quilting in the old dormitory. Take home a souvenir from the day’s
visit while shopping at the General Store.
A glorious contrast is the antebellum elegance embodied at Antrim 1844 Country House
Hotel. Nestled in historic Taneytown, this award-winning mansion will tickle and entice
your decorating instincts. The grand images are a wonderful introduction to the specially
prepared and served luncheon with all the trimmings that will complete your visit to this
restored plantation. Low heels are requested due to the historic preservation.
Union and Confederate soldiers camped on the grounds and alongside the Big Pipe Creek of
the Union Mills Homestead and Grist Mill. Retrace the steps of history as you tour the
1797 Homestead, which was home to six generations of the Maryland Shriver family - a
family that believed in throwing nothing away! The miller then invoked the technology of
19th-century industry with the faithfully restored undershot wheel and mill. Recipes and
stone ground flour are available at the gift shop.

Harford County . . . As You Like It
2-Day/1-Night
Day 1:
The day starts in Havre de Grace, located at the very top of the Chesapeake Bay - it’s a scenic
slice of small-town America. You’ll visit the Lockhouse Museum, a hands-on tribute to those
who worked the waters of the bay and the Susquehanna River. A stop at the Concord Point
Lighthouse is next, site of the defense of the town during the War of 1812. The Havre de
Grace Decoy Museum is dedicated to the display of the finest of this American folk art.
You’ll take a cruise aboard the Skipjack Martha Lewis before lunch. An unusual tour of the
region is the highlight of the afternoon. Because of its proximity to Pennsylvania and the large
number of Quakers and Methodists living here, this was one of the main routes of the
Underground Railroad. Your group will travel some of the trails and see the secret signals
that told runaway slaves where they could find safe havens. Then it’s time to check in at our
hotel and relax before dinner.
Day 2:
Grace and gardens are the focus today. After breakfast, we travel to Rockfield Manor. This is
one of the finest examples of the 1920s arts and crafts movement. It is an intriguing display
of a livable house with many unique features. From there, it’s onto Ladew Topiary Gardens.
This estate features 12 gardens, each one filled with some of the finest examples of topiary in
the world. The mansion itself boasts one of the most beautiful rooms in America. Lunch will
be in the renovated stable on the grounds. The last stop is Fiore’s Winery. This highly
respected vineyard produces wines in the classic Italian style, but with its own, unique
Maryland character. There’s a tour and time for a tasting before we leave for a dinner cruise
on the Lantern Queen, a replica of a Mississippi steamboat.

Historic Havre de Grace
Day Trip
Come spend a day in this city by the bay. Let a step-on guide provide you with the details of
how Havre de Grace was named and how it almost became our nation’s capital. Today Havre
de Grace is known as the “Decoy Capital of the World”.
The day begins with a stop at the Concord Point Lighthouse. For nearly two centuries, a
light at the junction of the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay has guided boaters
to safe harbors. During the War of 1812, it was the location where John O’Neill fired upon
the British in his attempt to save the town. You’ll then stroll Havre de Grace Promenade, a
wooden walkway along the city’s waterfront. There are plenty of chances to see ducks, geese
and other waterfowl that call the Upper Chesapeake home.
The Promenade ends at the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum, to see first-hand, the artwork
and craftsmanship of the carvers who create the wooden decoys of ducks, geese, swans and
other waterfowl of the Chesapeake Bay. Perhaps a carver will be on hand to demonstrate the
art of decoy making. Our next stop is the Susquehanna Museum, located at the restored
lockhouse keeper’s home. The museum recalls the day when Havre de Grace was the terminus
of the Susquehanna & Tidewater Canal that reached into Pennsylvania.
Following lunch at one of the many fine restaurants in town, spend time browsing more than
20 antique and specialty shops for treasures to take home. We’ll also make a visit to
Bomboy’s Homemade Chocolates, a family-owned, award-winning candy store. Our last
stop is an afternoon tea at the Havre de Grace Tea Room.

Maryland History Tour Honoring Frederick Douglass
America’s Greatest Freedom Fighter
Day Trip
Frederick Douglass was born into American slavery on or about February 14, 1818 in Talbot
County, MD. Douglass resided as a slave in Fells Point (Baltimore) between March 1826 and
September 1838. After escaping from slavery to freedom, Douglass became the greatest
African American of his day.
The “Path to Freedom” Walking Tour was created in February 2000. In 2003, Louis Fields
led an effort to install four permanent historic markers honoring Frederick Douglass. Historic
markers and sites on the tour include several 18th-century buildings and historic sites associated with Mr. Douglass. Stops and short discussions are held at locations where Douglass
lived, worked, worshipped, learned to read, and where he built five historic townhouses that
still stand in historic Fells Point.
The new Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Museum and the new Reginald F.
Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture will be recommended
to compliment the tour. This tour will be especially appealing to students, educators and
history lovers. In June 2005, this tour was accepted into the National Park Service Network
to Freedom Underground Railroad Program.

Underground Railroad Tour
Day Trip
The Upper Chesapeake region was one of the busiest “stops” along the Underground
Railroad. Many Quakers and Methodists who opposed slavery lived here. Their farms often
provided shelter for those trying to reach nearby Pennsylvania and Delaware. The heavilyforested lands along the Chesapeake Bay and Susquehanna River also offered protection
and shelter for the runaways.
The Underground Railroad tour takes you along some of the byways used by the enslaved as
they made their way to freedom. You’ll learn about the signals runaways looked for that told
them where there was safe haven. You’ll also visit the Quaker Meeting House and Methodist
churches, where those who opposed slavery worshiped, and the one-room schoolhouses that
were opened to educate freed African Americans after the Civil War.
The tour begins in Havre de Grace at the Concord Point Lighthouse. The group can enjoy
lunch on their own with free time to browse the shops in this historic town. Or, if you prefer,
a lunch at one of several restaurants may be arranged.

Shaping History – Student Tour
Day Tour
The history of Queen Anne’s County dates back to the earliest Colonial settlements in Maryland.
Settlement of the northern portion of the county began in the 1600s. Early communities grew up
around transportation routes, the rivers and streams, and then roads and eventually railroads.
Small towns were centers of economic and social activity and evolved over the years from thriving
centers of the tobacco trade to communities boosted by the railroad boom. Students will learn how
geography and economics influenced the small communities of Queen Anne’s County.
Themes include: Why it is important to preserve history; how transportation routes influenced the development of towns in Queen Anne’s County; how small towns were self-sufficient and social centers; and how two churches that have withstood the test of time and are
still in use.
We will visit six of the county’s historical sites and organizations including: St. Luke’s
Episcopal Church, built in 1732 for 140,000 pounds of tobacco; Church Hill Theatre,

Water Wheels & Hearth Fires – Student Tour
Day Tour
Queen Anne’s County boasts one of the first colonial settlements in Maryland, and the third
settlement in what would be the United States. From the earliest days of settlement on Kent
Island to the establishment of Queen Anne’s County and the development of towns, colonial
history is evident throughout the county. These first settlements were influenced by the availability of natural resources and early transportation routes, both waterways and land routes.
Mills sprung up around waterways, which provided power and transportation. Early mail
routes and ports dictated the location of the first county seat, which was later moved to a
more central location. Students will learn how geography and economics influenced the development of colonial Queen Anne’s County. They will explore the public and private aspects of
life in colonial times.
Themes include: How the location of colonial settlements was influenced by the geography
and natural resources of the region; how courthouses were the centers of political activities in
the colonies; how farming was the major economic activity of colonial Queen Anne’s County;
and how towns were the communication hubs for the colonies.
Students will visit five of the county’s historical sites and organizations including: the
Colonial Courthouse in Queenstown, the original county seat constructed in 1708; the
Wye Grist Mill, first mill built in 1668; the Tucker House, the oldest original house built in
Centreville in 1794; Wright’s Chance, built in the early 1700s and moved to its current
location to be saved; and the Queen Anne’s County Courthouse, the oldest continuously
operating court house in the state of Maryland built in 1792.

A Tour for All
Day Trip
Arrive in Montgomery County, and begin your day with a guided tour of the Clara Barton
House. The Clara Barton National Historic Site commemorates the life of the founder of
the American Red Cross and her home served as the headquarters and warehouse for the
organization.
After this educational session, continue down the street to the famous Chesapeake & Ohio
(C&O) National Canal, which operated from 1828-1924 as a transportation route, primarily
hauling coal from western Maryland to the port of Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
Hundreds of original structures, including locks, lockhouses, and aqueducts, serve as
reminders of the canal’s role as a transportation system during the Canal Era. In addition, the
canal’s towpath provides a nearly level, continuous trail through the spectacular scenery of the
Potomac River Valley. Every year millions of visitors come to hike or bike the C&O Canal
in order to enjoy the natural, cultural, and recreational opportunities available.
Next enjoy an active and amusing lunch at Dave & Busters where there is an incredible
assortment of state-of-the-art games. Spend the remaining of the afternoon shopping in one
of our three major malls or in downtown Bethesda.

An Executive Encounter
(Presidential Playground)
2-Day/1-Night
Frederick County is home to Camp David, the Presidential Retreat, so we’ve seen our share of
the nation’s decision makers. On this tour, you’ll hear stories about the first families who’ve enjoyed
our area. Abe Lincoln gave a speech, Grant visited the Fair, Mrs. Eisenhower and Mrs. Clinton
shopped and of course, George Washington slept here. Your group will hear about these “Executive
Encounters”.
Day 1:
The group will arrive in the afternoon for a driving tour of downtown Frederick. The first
stop will be at the Roger Brooke Taney House. As Chief Justice of the United States
Supreme Court from 1836-1864, Taney inaugurated seven American Presidents, from Van
Buren to Lincoln. Taney also served as Attorney General, Secretary of the Treasury and
Secretary of War in the cabinet of Andrew Jackson. He owned this house in Frederick from
1815 to 1823, while he was establishing his reputation as one of the leading lawyers in
Maryland. We will stop for desserts at the old Frederick Opera House, now known as
Brewer’s Alley Restaurant: As the primary gathering place of the community, the Opera
House hosted speeches by presidents and presidential candidates, including William H. Taft,
William Jennings Bryan, and Teddy Roosevelt. Next, the group may explore downtown
Frederick to visit the shops, just like Hillary and Chelsea Clinton did. Check-in at the
Holiday Inn Express-Frederick. Dinner will be at the Cozy Restaurant in Thurmont,
followed by a visit to the Cozy’s Camp David Room, which commemorates the executive
encounters of every president since FDR.
Day 2:
The group will enjoy a continental breakfast before check-out and boarding the coach for
Rose Hill Manor. Once the home of Maryland’s first elected governor, Thomas Johnson,
Rose Hill was visited by Johnson’s close friend George Washington. While serving in the First
Continental Congress, Johnson nominated George Washington as commander of the
Continental Army. Today, Rose Hill Manor is available for guided tours and is a fantastic
“touch and feel” museum. After a stop for lunch, the group will depart for home.

visits, enjoy lunch in downtown Silver Spring and then head over to the National Capitol
Trolley Museum to ride one of the 17 streetcars operating on a one-mile track. The Trolley
Museum was founded in 1959 to preserve and interpret the history of area electric street
railways. Enjoy your last tour in Rockville at the Beall-Dawson House, constructed in 1815
as a residence of the Beall family and now home to the Montgomery County Historical
Society. Also on site here you will find the Stonestreet Museum of 19th-Century Medicine,
the outfitted office of a country doctor. End your day at one of our 40 hotels, offering more

Quaker tradition. The museum also houses an interesting collection of Montgomery County
artifacts. After this rewarding stop, it’s off to Oakley Cabin, which was constructed from logs
in the 1820s to house enslaved people. The Oakley Cabin is now a living history site and
museum. Hungry? Make your way to one of Montgomery County’s 900 ethnically-diverse
restaurants before catching the Historic White’s Ferry, a unique cable ferry crossing the
Potomac, short distance downriver from White’s Ford where J.E.B. Stuart’s Cavalry crossed in

in 1865 of Seneca sandstone, and operated as a one-room schoolhouse until 1910. Finish up

Nature’s Beauty in Action
Day Trip
Spend the morning at Friendship Farm Park overlooking Nanjemoy Creek in western
Charles County. Hike the interpretative trail that winds through this 235-acre natural
parkland or stand atop observation towers as flashes of color pass through the trees from
resident and migrating songbirds and bald eagles fly overhead. Make sure you bring your
binoculars and cameras to capture nature’s beauty in action!
Enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the water.
Next it’s on to Purse State Park, where at low tide, you can walk along the shoreline in
search of 55-million-year-old fossils, sharks teeth, bones and shells. Check the tides before

Maryland’s history began in St. Mary’s County in 1634, when 140 brave colonists first stepped
onto the New World soil and established the fourth permanent settlement in British North
America. They traveled along the peninsula’s shoreline and explored its inland waterways in search
of a protected refuge. In 1635, they established St. Mary’s City along the banks of the beautiful St.
Mary’s River. The bustling town was destined to become Maryland’s early capital. By the late 17th
century, the colony had grown, and outlying plantations thrived along rivers and creeks, which
formed the economic lifelines to the Chesapeake Bay and the greater world beyond.
Start the day with a visit to Historic St. Mary’s City, Maryland’s premier outdoor living
history museum and one of the nation’s best preserved archeological sites. While there, board
the Maryland Dove, a manned working replica of the square-rigged ship that carried the
colonists from England. Experience the life and daily concerns of an early colonial family at
the Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation, and learn how colonists and Native Americans interacted at the Yacomo Woodland Indian Hamlet. Tour the reconstructed State House, the
site where Mistress Margaret Brent first petitioned for the right to vote, and the first individual of African descent participated in a colonial legislature. End the morning with a stop at
Farthing’s Ordinary Museum Shop.
Travel a few minutes up the road and step into the next century at Sotterley Plantation.
Arrange for a casually elegant boxed lunch on the portico of the early 18th-century
Manor House and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the Patuxent River. Then
step inside for an architectural tour of this unique post-in-ground structure which boasts
some of the finest Georgian-period woodwork in America. Hear the stories of generations of planters who called Sotterley home, who helped forge a revolution in 1776 and
then struggled to save their way of life as North fought South during the Civil War.
Enjoy Sotterley’s picturesque garden and outbuildings before ending your visit with a
walk to the slave cabin, one of the few such structures remaining in Maryland and a
poignant witness to an era long past. Make Leonardtown your last stop for shopping
and have a bite to eat at one of the town’s trendy restaurants. Established in 1708,
Leonardtown is the oldest incorporated town in Maryland and has one of the few
remaining town squares in the state.

Roses and Wine
Day Trip
The quest for religious freedom and the struggle to establish and maintain religious tolerance is
illustrated by the number of historic churches that dot the Charles County countryside.
Begin tracing our religious heritage by starting your day with a visit to the Mount Carmel
Monastery in LaPlata. Founded by four Carmelite nuns in 1790, Carmel of Port Tobacco
was the first monastery for religious women in the United States. Two of the restored
buildings are open to the public for self-guided tours. Visitors can also attend Mass in the
monastery chapel. A stop to the gift shop will find a number of treasures to purchase
including religious sculptures and rose petal rosaries designed by the Carmelite nuns who
reside there today.
Next, visit St. Ignatius Church and Thomas Manor House at Chapel Point in Port
Tobacco. Founded in 1641, this religious site in the nation’s oldest active parish with a
continuing pastorate. The church and manor house, a residence for Jesuit priests for over 360
years, are located on a 120-foot bluff overlooking the mouth of the Port Tobacco River
where it joins the Potomac. Be sure to take a look at the embroidered kneeler panels. Nearly
50 different panels were stitched by a team of volunteers. Although the church is open daily
for self-guided tours, you can make advanced arrangements with the church staff for a
narrative tour.
Just a few miles from the church is Popes Creek. During the Civil War, this was a favorite
spot for Confederate spies to illegally cross the Potomac River into Virginia. Today this area is
renowned for the crab houses along the shore. Here, enjoy lunch with a waterfront view
while feasting on hot steamed crabs and shrimp, local oysters on the half shell or the fresh
catch of the day.
After lunch, head to LaPlata and stop at the Christ Church Port Tobacco Parish for a look
at their stained glass window designs. These “jewels of light” range from Tiffany-style to
contemporary designs, which fill the church with changing patterns of color through the
daily, seasonal journeys of the sun.
End the day by heading down the street to The Crossing at Casey Jones for a
wine-tasting party with their sommelier.
