If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not
have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I
have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all
knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains,
but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my
possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast,
but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or
arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not
irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but
rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an
end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will
come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy
only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will
come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I
thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became
an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a
mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know
only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully
known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three;
and the greatest of these is love.

Literary Ladies
Connections
Book
The Literary Ladies will meet on Feb. 26 at 10:00 in the
McDermott room. The book is A Thousand White Women by
Jim Fergus. It is the journal of May Dodd, a white woman
from Chicago who voluntarily goes to live among the Cheyenne Indians in 1875 as part of a trade agreement between
the Cheyenne and the U.S. Government: horses for white women.

Giffords and Mark Kelly for
February. As individ uals,
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords
and her husband, Mark Kelly,
showed Americans how optimism,
an adventurous spirit, and a call to
service can help change the world.
As a couple, they became a
national example of the healing
power to be found in deeply shared love and courage. Our
book discussion will be on Wed., February 19th at 7:30 PM in
the Metzger Room. Books are available in the Ramsey

First Pres Transportation Team is looking for drivers to take our
otherwise homebound members to church, special appointments and
maybe even to the grocery store. If you’re willing to help even one time
a month, please contact our Transportation Team Coordinator, Lestra
Litchfield (201.684.0466) or e-mail [email protected].
The Transportation Team is just one more way our Deacons extend care
and compassion throughout the church.

Bible School Happenings
2nd, Scout Sunday, children in Bible School will attend
worship in the sanctuary. The Nursery/Pre-K class may worship as
a class for a short time.
Scout Sunday honors all those involved in scouting programs.
Please wear your uniform to worship. Scouts will participate in the
worship service.

This is also “Souper Bowl Sunday,” and everyone is invited to bring a can of soup and a dollar to church for
the Center for Food Action.
Parents: Please note!
On February 9th, during the Annual Meeting following worship, there will be an activity for children
whose parents attend the meeting. Teachers will escort the children to the Metzger Room for the postBible School activity.
The Bible School Mission Offering, collected on the first Sunday of every month, helps us in the Bible School
“make a difference” in our neighborhood and in the world. Please remember that the 1st Sunday of the month
is “Mission Sunday” at Bible School, and bring your offering to church. Our mission offerings were donated at
the end of 2013 to the Center for Food Action, the American Bible Society and New City Kids.
Looking ahead to the season of Lent
We begin the Lenten season on Ash Wednesday, March 5th.
Lenten resources will be given to the children on March 2nd, to be
used at home with their families.
One Great Hour of Sharing “fish banks” and calendars will be
distributed on March 9th. These banks are a way for the children to
experience giving to others, as they experience seeing just how God
has been good to them. Thank you for encouraging the use of these
materials with your children as we journey together through this
season of Lent. Fish banks are returned on Palm Sunday in
worship, April 13th.

First Friday Fellowship (for the over 60 crowd) will meet on February 7th at 11:45 in the
Metzger Room. Our guest speaker will be Nancy Motto who will take us on her climb of Mt.
Kilimanjaro. Please sign up at Fellowship Hour on February 2nd or by calling the church
office (201-327-3879) by Wednesday, February 5th if you plan to come.
Fireside Readings will take place in the Metzger Room from
3-4:30 on Sunday, February 23rd. Come warm yourself by the
fire, hear wonderful stories, and share in a time of fellowship with
our own Paul Talarico and company!
Johnsonburg Camp and Conference Center
It’s that time of year again! Think SUMMER and CAMP! Our Presbyterian camp,
Johnsonburg Camp and Conference Center in Western New Jersey has welcomed many of our
present Bible school children and hundreds of former members and friends in the past. Watch
for a letter to all parents of our Bible school children (1st grade and up), There will be
brochures available in the Education Building and the Narthex when they are available. Partial
scholarships are available to children in the Bible school on a limited basis, so please hurry and
make your decision for your favorite activity and join in the fun at Johnsonburg this summer!
Remember to give Peg Kutner, our camp registrar, your application information before sending
it on to Johnsonburg.

MUSICAL NOTES FROM THE DOCTOR
This month I would like to discuss a hymn, which is based upon the 23rd Psalm, entitled “The
King of Love My Shepherd Is.” The hymn text was composed by Henry Williams Baker, a
vicar in the Church of England, who edited and wrote a number of hymnals and prayer books
during the later half of the 19th century. Baker’s final words on his death bed were the third
stanza of his hymn:
Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
But yet in love He sought me,
And on His shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.
The tune to this hymn, “St. Columba,” is an ancient Irish melody, though it was not published
until the mid-19th century. The tune is named for St. Columba who is credited for bringing
Christianity to Ireland and oddly enough, was also the first to report seeing the Loch Ness
monster!
