The scrutinies, which are solemnly celebrated on Sundays, are rites for self-searching and repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose. The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect (those individuals receiving the sacrament of Baptism at the Easter Vigil); to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. The scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ. These rites should complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all. In order to inspire the elect a desire for purification and redemption by Christ, three scrutinies are celebrated. Their spirit is filled with Christ the Redeemer, who in the living water (gospel of the Samaritan woman in the first scrutiny), the light of the world (gospel of the man born blind in the second scrutiny), the resurrection and the life (gospel of Lazarus in the third scrutiny). From the first to the final scrutiny the elect should progress in their perception of sin and their desire for salvation. JOIN US FOR THE ST. UPCOMING EVENTS Monthly Meditations and Munchies The next meeting date is April 4th at 10:30 am in the Green Room Scripture LESSON JOHN 20:1-9 THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS In John’s account of the first Easter morning, Mary Magdalene discovered the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, spoke with the angels, and raced back to the apostles and told them what she knew. Electrified by the news, John and Peter ran to the tomb. John was younger and arrived first, but he waited for Peter, the head of the apostles. When they entered the tomb, John described the arrangements of the cloths in which Jesus was buried. Instantly, John “saw and believed.” Perhaps something in the way the cloths were folded and arranged may have seemed familiar, spoken of Jesus’ habits and convinced John that Jesus was alive again. The Resurrection proved that Jesus was who he said he was. Jesus rose from the dead so we would know that our faith in him is justified. St. Kieran Parish, Shelby Township All You Can Eat Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion In today’s processional Gospel from St. Luke, Jesus asks two of his disciples to go into the village and bring him a tethered colt on which he will triumphantly enter Jerusalem. These disciples faithfully carry out his request without questions. Christ’s triumph soon changes to the agony of betrayal, scourging and death described in St. Luke’s Passion. Do we, as Christian stewards, respond like the faithful disciples when Christ asks us to share our time, our skills and our financial resources with our parish—the greater Church—and our neighbors in need? Corner of the Religious Education Building Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned! "Our Lord is hidden there, waiting for us to come and visit him and ask him for what we want. He is there, in the Sacrament of his love, sighing and interceding unceasingly for sinners before God his Father. He is there to console us ... See how good he is! He adapts himself to our weakness... In heaven where we shall be triumphant and glorious, we shall see him in all his glory; if he had appeared before us now in glory, we should not have dared to approach him; but he hides himself like one in prison, saying to us, 'You do not see me, but that does not matter; ask me for all you want, and I will grant it to you.'" Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think they are still registered under their parents. But membership requires signing up - formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses and programs are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong! It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for tax purposes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission. Registering in your parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of your parish. 2009 Liturgical Publications Inc.
