How does one prepare for the celebration of rites in this process when there are catechumens and candidates present? The most important thing to consider in the preparation of these rites is to respect the difference between catechumens and candidates. Catechumens are those who are not baptized and are preparing for initiation…baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. Candidates are those who are baptized and are already regarded as members of the family of God. They are preparing to complete their initiation and establish full communion with the Catholic Church. Catholic candidates are baptized and are already regarded as members of the family of God. They are preparing to complete their initiation. In the actual celebration of the rites catechumens and candidates should be addressed separately. “Anything that would equate candidates for reception into full communion with those who are catechumens is to be absolutely avoided. The address and the prayers should make clear the distinction between the catechumens and candidates. Since initiation is the responsibility of all the baptized the whole community should be offered an active part in the celebration of the rites particularly in responses, prayers, singing, acclamations, and gestures. The music chosen for responses and acclamations should also reflect the different journeys of the persons in the group. Page 4 St. Kieran Parish, Shelby Township 2nd Sunday of Lent Many of us have buried relatives or friends who have had an impact on our lives. Standing there in the funeral home or meditating at their grave, we can recall what they meant to us, how their words or actions touched us in some way, how what they did gave some shape to the person we are today. Often, it is only years later that we recognize in ourselves some of their own character. Every year on the Second Sunday of Lent, we hear a version of the story of the transfiguration of Jesus. Matthew, Mark, and Luke each describe the experience in a rather similar fashion. But Luke adds something that the others leave out. As Jesus converses with Moses and Elijah who have appeared alongside him on the mountain, Luke says that they "spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem." This is pure Lucan theology. Luke constructs his Gospel in such a way that Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem where he will accomplish the fulfillment of his Father's will through his death and resurrection. In doing so, he ushers in the era of the church on which the Holy Spirit is poured out, as a prelude to the triumph of the kingdom of God. For Luke, the exodus of Jesus in Jerusalem is his pass over from death to life in the glory of the Resurrection. The Transfiguration is a glimpse of that glory. In a way, at the top of that mountain, Peter, James, and John were already witnessing what could be the impact of this man in their lives. He was going to change everything. As he has done with us! During Lent we take some time to reflect on what the life and teaching of Jesus means to us. We don't stand at his grave, but at an empty tomb, and recall that the One who passed over from death to life holds that promise for us as well. ©2012 Liturgical Publications Inc I noticed that in some languages, the period before Easter is called "forty days." Where did Lent get its name? Many names used in the church for prayers, feasts, and liturgies have interesting histories. History, language, and the adaptation of secular things for religious purposes often influenced how something got its name. Greek and Latin hold a primary, though not exclusive, influence. In the case of Lent, it was a combination of language and history that influenced its English name. The word Lent comes from the Middle English word “Lenten,” which means spring, and it did not have any religious meaning. Since Easter was celebrated in late spring, the time before it was designated as a time of preparation. Lent was not always forty days however. In the early church, it was just a few days, and was later extended to a few weeks. By the time of the Council of Nicaea, in 325, Lent was forty days, most likely because of the length of time that Jesus spent in the desert to prepare for his public ministry. The early Greek word for Lent meant forty days. It was then translated into Latin, and on to the Romance languages (derived from Latin): Italian, Spanish, French, etcetera. Spring's association with the time of Easter had a greater influence in our language, and the Middle English word “Lenten” became Lent as the time more connected to preparation before Easter. © 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc DYING AND RISING WITH CHRIST: A PASTORAL MESSAGE “Many Catholics have lost a clear sense about how to face death with faith and hope, about the importance of exercising Christian charity by praying for our beloved dead, and about what it truly means to experience the consolation that only our communion with Jesus Christ can offer.” --Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron In his pastoral letter, “In Union with Christ’s Dying and Rising: Our Catholic Funeral Rites as a Sharing in the Paschal Mystery,” Archbishop Vigneron offers an understanding of Catholic funeral rites – which, he points out, are about salvation and “are essential to the life of faith, hope and charity to which God the Father calls us.” You are invited to read the pastoral letter on the Archdiocese of Detroit website at: www.aod.org/funerals or the St. Kieran website at: Www.stkieran.org St. Kieran Parish, Shelby Township For Your Reflection….. Second Sunday of Lent A theme of transformation links today’s Scripture passages. In the Book of Genesis, God makes a covenant with Abram, later named Abraham, to transform him and his people into a great nation with vast lands and numerous descendants. St. Paul encourages the Philippians not to follow those who are enemies of the cross of Christ, but to transform their lives into Christ’s glorified body. In the Gospel, Peter, James and John experience Christ glorified in His Transfiguration on the mountaintop. Stewardship is a transformation—a call to holiness, a conversion of mind and heart to discipleship in the Lord. Page 5 Health Talk Skin Cancer Monday, February 25th 7:30 p.m. Green Room Speaker: Jenny Meitzner, NP Refreshments RSVP Not Necessary Year of Faith: Faith Catechism of the Catholic Church I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. (Nicene Creed) Reflection: The Profession of Faith is an act both personal and communitarian. It is the Church that is the primary subject of faith. In the faith of the Christian community, each individual receives baptism, an effective sign of entry into the people of believers in order to obtain salvation. As we read in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “‘I believe’ is the faith of the Church professed personally by each believer, principally during baptism. ‘We believe’ is the faith of the Church confessed by the bishops assembled in council or more generally by the liturgical assembly of believers. ‘I believe’ is also the Church, our mother, responding to God by faith as she teaches us to say both ‘I believe’ and ‘we believe’.” (Porta Fidei, 10) Question: How do I individually and communally profess my faith throughout the day, keeping my relationship with God always as the central focus of my life? Drop-Off Baby Shower……... Please bring donations of baby items on the weekend of March 9/10. Proceeds will benefit Right to Life. Suggested items are new or very gently used baby clothing, blankets, bedding, bottles. New cloth or disposable diapers. Inner Healing Day March 9 St. Kieran’s will host the Inner Healing Day with prayer teams under the auspices of the Detroit Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center on Saturday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to noon in the White Room. Enter from the back of the building. Private, personal, individual prayer will be available. In the inner healing prayer, led by the Holy Spirit, Jesus is asked to heal the emotional and psychological scars caused by people in our past, often those closest to us. If you would like prayer for the Lord to take the pain from your painful memories please join us. We encourage all parishioners to use at least the minimum of caution during this flu season, and given the severity of the flu at this time, we are asking all parishioners to refrain from using the cup or sharing the sign of peace if they are even slightly aware of feeling ill. We will have hand sanitizer available at the doors of the church and in all of the restrooms for your use. Page 6 St. Kieran Parish, Shelby Township St. Kieran Adoration Chapel N.E. Corner of the Religious Education Building Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned! Since the early Church, Catholics have spent the Season of Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday, preparing for the great feast of Easter. The Lenten season is spent with more prayer, fasting, sacrifice, scripture study, almsgiving, spiritual and corporal works of mercy, meditation and contemplation on Our Lord’s “Way of The Cross”, while taking up our cross. All of this wonderful preparation is part of our journey of developing a closer relationship with the Lord through more intimate daily contact with Him in His Eucharistic Presence, Mass, Communion and Eucharistic Adoration. “Come to Me all of you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you” (Mt.11:28). Nourished by His Eucharistic Love we become more intimate with Him and are enabled to reach out to Him disguised in our brothers and sisters: the poor, hungry, cold, sick, dying ,elderly, unborn, outcast and all who are in need. Consider making a Holy Hour a part of your Lenten resolution. Stop in the chapel and sign the register located in the back of the chapel. Bring your own Bible, prayer book or rosary or use those in the Chapel. Call PAT Iagnemma 586-739-9694 or Bev Hood 586-781-3329 to commit to an hour of prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament or for more information. Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think they are still registered under their parents. But membership requires signing up - formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses and programs are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong! It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for tax purposes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission. Registering in your parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of your parish. 2009 Liturgical Publications Inc.
