Fiona Tan: Geography of Time, Museet for Samtidskunst, until January 31 Fiona Tan expresses herself in a richly visual language at the intersection between the documentary and literary genres. This exhibition explores fundamental questions about the nature of identity and how individuals live with the past and memories in everyday life. With her Australian-Indonesian roots, the Dutch artist Fiona Tan describes herself as a “professional foreigner ”. Shortly after her birth in 1966 in Indonesia, her family had to flee from the military regime of Suharto. They settled in Australia. After studying in Germany and in the Netherlands at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunst, Tan made Amsterdam her home. Memories and identity have since emerged as the central preoccupations of her art. Click here for more information, send an email to [email protected] or call 21 98 20 00. The German photographer Herlinde Koelbl has visited military training camps in 27 countries, and photographed the targets that the soldiers use when they are training to kill. She has been to Europe, the USA, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, China, Russia, Turkey and Israel. Only North Korea denied her access. Herlinde Koelbl has also portrayed those who may end up as living targets: the soldiers. A video installation and excerpts from Koelbl’s conversations with the soldiers accompany the exhibition’s photographs. They provide a glimpse of the challenging position the soldiers face.
