MAJOR EVENTS/FESTIVALS
Sibelius Festival, Oslo Konserthus, November 12 – 13 at 19.00
Finnish composer Jean Sibelius is considered by many to be the greatest
Nordic orchestra composer of all time. Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra
celebrates the 150th anniversary of his birth with a mini festival, featuring
a selection of his well-known compositions. The orchestra is led by Sibelius
expert Jukka-Pekka Saraste, who describes the Oslo Philharmonic as “one of
the truly great Sibelius orchestras”.

Krater Festival, Pokalen Pub, November 13 - 14
Krater is a new festival for underground metal that features both local bands
and international guests. Most subgenres are represented, including thrash,
death, black, doom and heavy metal.

Valkyrien Allstars, Parkteatret Scene,November 13 at 20.00
One of Norway’s most popular live bands, Valkyrien Allstars, returns to
Parkteatret.
Their fourth studio album, Farvel Slekt og Venner (‘Farewell Friends and Family’)
continues to develop the band’s unique sound, located at the intersection of
traditional and modern. Whereas traditional harding fiddle tunes and old
broadside ballads are still part of their repertoire, the band’s own lyrics and
melodies are dominating this release.

Kalandra celebrate the release of their new single, “Love You Right” a teaser from the band’s first EP. The band plays a mix of Nordic and

Marcus Miller Band, Cosmopolite, Friday 13 at 20.00
Marcus Miller has played with jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock,
Luther Vandross and David Sanborn. He has also enjoyed a successful solo
career. He is now on tour with his most recent album Afrodeezia.

Siv Jacobsen, Café Mono, November 12 at 21.00
Norwegian singer-songwriter Siv Jacobsen plays a concert with a full band at
Mono. Her lyrics are strikingly honest. With strong references to Ane Brun and
Laura Marling she invites us to share in some of her most intimate moments.
The concert will feature a few brand new songs.

Norwegian Baroque Orchestra: Lucatelli/Tartini/Mozart, Den
Norske Opera & Ballett, November 15 at 18.30
The Norwegian Baroque Orchestra was established in 1988 as one of the
first independent early music ensembles in Scandinavia. The orchestra
performs at a high level, and has paved the way for early music played
on historical instruments in Norway. German-Norwegian Gottfried von
der Goltz has been the orchestra’s Artistic Director since 2007, and is
regarded as an eminent baroque violin virtuoso.

DANCE

Highlights, Dansens Hus, until November 13 at 19.00
Transformations and play are central topics in the acclaimed Swedish dance ensemble
Cullberg Ballet’s performance Highlights. It consists of two new works by two provocative
and interesting choreographers with an international focus. This is a performance that
challenges views on the body, sexuality and identity.
The Return of The Modern Dance: American choreographer Tarjall Harrell has made
a strong mark as a choreographer operating at the intersection of contemporary dance
and the club scene, and tours worldwide with his performances. The Return of The
Modern Dance takes early modern dance as its starting point, and is created for six of
the Cullberg Ballet’s male dancers.
Reproduction: Eszter Salamon from Hungary has created a new version of her
acclaimed 2004 performance Reproduction. She lets Cullberg Ballet’s dancers take off,
put on and wear different gender identities.

Turbulence (A Dance About the Economy), Black Box Teater, November
12/13 at 19.00
This performance is a collective and experimental hybrid of contemporary dance,
improvised happening and political theatre. By playing with the overstepping of
norms and calculated violations of generally accepted norms, the work gives a
physical feedback on the economic crisis, and is intended as both a celebration
and provocation of the global movement for economic justice.

Tonje Glimmerdal, Det Norske Teatret, until November 28
Tough girl Tonje Glimmerdal, who will soon turn 10 years old is the only
child living in Glimmerdal. Her best friend is Gunnvald, a stubborn old man
who plays the violin and always has time for her.

Kids Art Weekend – Gingerbread Sculpture Park, Ekebergparken
skulpturpark, November 14 – 15 from 12.00 – 16.00
Children’s weekend activities in Hakkespettene (‘The Woodpecker’s activity
house), located in Ekebergparken sculpture park. Children may participate in
workshop activities, experience art in the park especially adapted for children,
and have fun in the outdoor climbing park. The staff speak English.
This weekend there will be a special gingerbread sculpture workshop.

Der Jasager, Den Norske Opera & Ballett, until November 17 at 18.30
In Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s children’s opera Der Jasager/The Yes Sayer, a
whole village is hit by an epidemic. A young school pupil is faced with the fateful
decision of whether to sacrifice himself for the community, or save himself. The
opera from 1930 is based on the Japanese work Taniko.
The second part of the evening offers music written for young performers and a
young audience, from composers such as Kurt Weill, Hans Eisler and Paul Dessau.

Fredrikstad as host venues. The festival offers the latest on Norwegian and Nordic

HOK Family Day, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, November 15 from 11.00 –
17.00
The family activity day at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter features a wide range of
art-related activities for children and families, including a child-friendly tour of
the exhibitions (in Norwegian), art workshops and activity trails. The children
may also borrow an iPod and explore the museum’s collections as “art agents”.
All activities are included in the regular ticket to the museum. Free admission for
children under the age of 18.
