Some people have a JOB in the church; others involve themselves in a MINISTRY. What's the difference? If you are doing it just because no one else will, it's a JOB. If you are doing it to serve the Lord, it's a MINISTRY. If you quit because someone criticizes you, it's a JOB. If you keep on serving, it's a MINISTRY. If you'll do it only so long as it does not interfere with other activities, it's a JOB. If you're committed to staying with it even when it means letting go of other things, it's a MINISTRY. For additional information: http://www.stmarktampa.org/PC You'll have the opportunity to give the gift of life at our St. Mark's Blood Drive. You'll also receive a miniphysical, free movie ticket voucher and a chance to win a great Super Bowl Gift Basket. The basket will be filled with gift certificates, snacks, wine and other goodies. The office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry has started our pilgrimage towards attending the National Catholic Youth Conference; a wonderful, faith filled three day experience to be held in Indianapolis in November of 2013. Just as in the past, we need the help of our parish family to make this happen. Therefore we ask you: 1. Travel with us in prayer as we prepare and plan for our journey. 2. Consider being a sponsor for one of our teens or young adults. Not only will you be walking with your teen on this journey, but you will also share in the abundance of God’s grace that will flow when they arrive home. Each teen that is sponsored will be writing you a personal note about each day of the convention, which will be given to you upon their return. 3. Watch us live from your home . The NFCYM will be live steaming the entire convention during the four day experience!. “Each person will gain something. When people give God their time in gathering, God will grace them with what they need in those moments.” Bishop Timothy Doherty The Sacrament of Confirmation CCC # 1309 Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit - his actions, his gifts, and his biddings - in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To this end catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as well as the parish community. The latter bears special responsibility for the preparation of confirmands. The second mandatory class will be held on Thursday : Feb 7 at 6:30 PM Please plan on arriving 15 minutes early so we can start on time! The classes will run until 9 PM. Confirmation Rehearsal: Sunday, May 19 at 6:30 PM Confirmation Mass: Sunday, May 26, at 5:30 PM Power up Tuesday! Power up nights are held from 6:30-9 PM for those Confirmed Teens and Young Adults that are looking for that extra boost of energy that we call faith. Join us on Tuesday, Jan 29 at 6:30 PM for our next session. Please RSVP to MaryAnn if you would like to attend. Renew Your Wedding Vows If you would like to Renew your Wedding Vows, they are done on the Fourth Saturday of the Month at the 5pm Mass. Please contact Luther by calling the church office or via email: [email protected] 6 Make a Gift through an IRA Charitable Rollover Normally, a distribution from your IRA is taxed as ordinary income. However, "fiscal cliff" tax legislation just enacted extends the opportunity throughout 2013 for individuals 70½ or older to make a direct distribution from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as your parish, Our Capital Campaign, the Annual Pastoral Appeal, the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of St. Petersburg, or another diocesan institution. Such qualified direct distributions to charity from your IRA are not subject to income tax. The new law also provides that you may consider such distributions made in January 2013 as made in 2012. In addition, the new law provides a special election available to individuals who took a distribution from their IRA after November 30, 2012 and before January 1, 2013, and who make a gift to a qualified charity before February 1, 2013, to treat the gift as an IRA charitable rollover even though the distribution is not directly from the IRA to charity. For more information about how you and the Church can benefit from an IRA charitable rollover, contact the parish office. January 20, 2013 Second Sunday of Ordinary Time YEAR OF FAITH - 2012-2013 by Kevin Fritz Faith is both certain and mysterious. Faith is certain because it is based on the Word of God. We believe that God has revealed the truth to us and we know God cannot deceive us. We can say that faith is certain not because of us but because of God. This gives us a sense of conviction. At the same time faith is mysterious because we cannot understand God completely. Saint Augustine used the image of a thimble and said it would be easier to put the whole of the ocean into a thimble than it is to comprehend and understand God. This is because, while God has revealed the truth to us in revelation and we know this is certain, there is a limitation in revelation that is not due to God who is unlimited but to ourselves who are limited. The fullness of God is more than we can comprehend as St. Paul declares: "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!" (Romans 11:33) This is important for us to reflect on because this is the basis of our spiritual life. It reminds us who we are - a people who are dependent on God who is greater than we are. There is a danger when we lose sight of this. We can become self-sufficient and decide that we no longer need God. In fact we can attempt to make ourselves God. In the Old Testament we hear about King Uzziah when he faced the threat of the Assyrian army. He decides that he will give God five days to come to their aid. If five days pass without God coming to their aid, Uzziah will surrender. Judith challenges Uzziah and the elders: "Who are you, then, that you should have put God to the test this day, setting yourselves in the place of God in human affairs? It is the Lord Almighty for whom you are laying down conditions; will you never understand anything? You cannot plumb the depths of the human heart or grasp the workings of the human mind; how then can you fathom God, who has made all these things, discern his mind, and understand his plan? No, my brothers, do not anger the Lord our God. For if he does not wish to come to our aid within the five days, he has it equally within his power to protect us at such time as he pleases, or to destroy us in the face of our enemies. It is not for you to make the Lord our God give surety for his plans. God is not man that he should be moved by threats, nor human, that he may be given an ultimatum." (Judith 8:12-16) Catholic Information Services Catholic Information Services offers an opportunity to increase your knowledge of the Catholic Faith. They offer short booklets on a variety of topics which can be downloaded as a PDF document or listened to online. Get more information at: http://www.kofc.org/un/en/cis/index.html Loyola Press 3 Minute Retreats Spend 3 minutes of quiet time each day reflecting on a scripture passage using the Loyola Press 3 minute retreats An opportunity to take a short prayer break during your busy day right on your computer. Go to: http://www.loyolapress.com/3-minuteretreats-daily-online-prayer.htm I Am There With You Faith challenges us to trust with conviction in the certainty of God's Word while at the same time not always understanding God's plans for us. Faith is certain because of God; it is mysterious because of us limited human beings who cannot fully comprehend God's plan. Kevin and his wife Darlene joined St. Mark's in 2003. He works in the Tampa area as a Quality Assurance Analyst. He studied theology at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in New York. On January 26th and 27th, you'll have the opportunity to give the gift of life at our St. Mark's Blood Drive. You'll also receive a mini-physical, a terrific tee shirt and a chance to win a great Super Bowl Gift Basket. The basket will be filled with gift certificates, snacks, wine and other goodies. Sign ups will be available after all Masses on Jan.12/13 and Jan.19/20. Consider donating a pint of blood as a perfect New Year's resolution. You are invited to commit to 30 or 60 minutes per week in the present of Our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration. There is an online schedule where you can sign up at www.stmarktampa.org/Adoration and also a clipboard in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. It is inspiring to see the response we are already seeing in such a short time. 7 Parish Schedule & Mass Intentions Sunday Readings: 7:00 AM 7:30 AM 8:30 AM 10:30 AM 12:30 PM 5:30 PM Thursday Readings: 9:30 AM 10:00 AM 12:00 PM 4:30 PM 7:00 PM 7:00 PM 7:00 PM Jan 21, 2013 7:30 PM 7:30 PM Second Sunday in Ordinary time Jan 20, 2013 Is 62:1-5; 1 Cor 12:4-11; Jn 2:1-11 Women's CRHP Weekend (All classrooms, Youth Room, Music room) RCIA Session (Office Conference Room) Mass ( Claire Burgess (d) by Kevin & Darlene Fritz ) Mass ( Aida Ayson (d) by Ed & Lourdes Lozano ) Mass ( Carlos Salvador (d) by His Wife ) Mass ( Guiseppe Frezza (d) by Enrico & Diana Sammassimo ) Monday St. Agnes Readings: Heb 5:1-10/Mk 2:18-22 8:30 AM Mass ( Antoine Raidi (L) by Lamice Ishak ) 7:00 PM Knights of Columbus Officers' Meeting (Office Conference Room) OFFICE CLOSED FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR BIRTHDAY Tuesday Readings: 8:30 AM 11:00 AM 6:00 PM 6:00 PM 7:00 PM 7:30 PM Day of Prayer f/t Legal Protection of the Unborn Heb 6:10-20/Mk 2:23-28 Mass ( Maria Varela (d) by Iris Vega ) SMARTS Card Social (John 1 & 2) Boy Scout Meeting (Music Room) Boy Scouts Eagle Scout Ceremony (Worship Area) RCIA Inquiry (Office Conference Room) Contemporary Music Rehearsal (Worship Area) St. Francis de Sale, Bishop Heb 7:25-8:6; Mk 3:7-12 Small Christian Community (Luke 1 & 2) Spanish Bible Reflections (Mark 1) Mass ( Parishioners of St. Mark ) Children's Choir (Music Room) Men's CRHP Meeting (Matt 1 & 2) Novena to the Miraculous Medal (Blessed Chapel) Youth Ministry Retreat Planning (Youth Room) Spanish Charismatic Prayer Group (Blessed Chapel) Spanish Choir (Music Room) Jan 24, 2013 Friday The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle Jan 25, 2013 Readings: Acts 22:3-16 or 9:1-22; Mk 16:15-18 8:30 AM Mass ( Antoine Raidi (L) by Lamice Ishak ) 12:00 PM CRHP Men's Weekend Set Up (All Classrooms, Music Rm, Youth Rm Jan 22, 2013 Saturday Sts.
