ear Parishioners,
In today’s second reading from James, we are reminded that all good giving and every perfect gift are from
God. At times we may think that our moments of generosity are solely of our own doing; we can become
prideful and boastful of our generosity. But God is always the initiator of good. And so, even our moments of
generosity, are responses to God’s call deep within us to give freely as God gives freely!
In the first reading, Moses commanded the people to observe the commandments that God gave to them so
they would live as the free children of God. And in the Gospel, Jesus invites us to examine our own thoughts
and behaviors. Each of us needs to look at our quality of life to see if we are greedy, arrogant, or if there are
evil thoughts that continue to linger in our hearts. We need to examine the motivations behind our actions.
Each day, we should take some time to remember and praise God for the good that has been a part of each
day. And we also need to remember those moments when we have not behaved as children of the Light and
ask for forgiveness and pray for the strength to reflect that Light more the next day.
Next weekend, a Jamaican choir will be with us for Mass and will lead a good portion of the music for our
assembly singing. Father Brian Kerr, from the Missionaries of the Poor, will preach at all Masses and will
invite us to take part, in whatever way we can, to support the work of the missions.
"About the Missionaries of the Poor (M.O.P)
The Missionaries of the Poor (M.O.P.), is an interna onal monas c order of Brothers dedicated to "Joyful
Service with Christ on the Cross" in service of the poorest of the poor. The Missionaries do similar works to
that of Mother Teresa of Calcu a. The order was started in 1981 by Very Rev. Father Richard Ho Lung,
M.O.P., and has now grown to over 550 brothers around the world who live and work in the most vulnerable
and vola le situa ons and who give their lives freely for the be erment of the homeless, sick, disabled and
des tute children and adults.
The Missionaries now take care of over 30,000 people worldwide, offering permanent shelter and loving care
for the homeless poor, food-line and clothes-line for des tute families, soup-kitchens, medical missions and
clinical services, prison ministries, evangeliza on, instruc on in the Catholic teaching and free educa on to
poor children all for the love of Jesus. They have missions in Jamaica (main home), Hai , India, Philippines,
Uganda, Kenya, Indonesia and North Carolina.
One of the most striking characteris cs of the life and works of the Missionaries of the Poor is evangeliza on
through the original world-acclaimed music of their Founder, Fr. Richard Ho Lung, which brings great joy to
the poor and gathers people of all na ons, cultures and colors together as one family of God!!
Mark your calendars for our annual Parish Fall Fest on Saturday, September 26 following the 5:00 pm Mass.
This will be a great autumn evening of fun and fellowship for everyone!
I wrote last week about the great gift that our Deacons have been to our parish. We will celebrate their
service among us on Sunday, September 13 at the 11:00 am Mass. A reception will follow the Mass. Come
and thank God for their service and congratulate them on the many years and gifts they have shared so
generously with us. Mark your calendars for this very joyous Deacons’ Appreciation Day!
Joyfully in Christ,

PROFILES IN FAITHFULNESS
=====================================
As Fr. John mentioned in his message, we will be celebrating Deacons’ Appreciation
Day at the 11:00 am Mass on September 13. In connection with this, the St. Joseph
Pastoral Council will be publishing a series of articles over the next few weeks on the
Diaconate and the St. Joseph Parish deacons.
W hat is a Deacon?
A deacon is an ordained minister or member of the clergy of the Catholic Church.
There are three groups or “orders” of ordained ministers in the Church: bishops, presbyters (priests) and
deacons. Deacons are ordained as a sacramental sign to the Church and to the world of Christ, who came
“to serve and not to be served.” The entire Church is called by Christ to serve and the deacon, by virtue of
his sacramental ordination and through his various ministries is to be a servant in a servant-Church. In fact
the title “deacon” comes from the Greek work diakonos which means “servant”.
There are two types of deacons, a “transitional deacon” and a “permanent deacon”. All priests are first
ordained as deacons. For them, the diaconate is transitional as they also go on to be ordained priests.
Permanent deacons are what the name implies. They are ordained for a life-long commitment to a ministry
of service to others as deacons. There is no difference in the sacramental sign or the functions between
transitional and permanent deacons.
The service of deacons in the Church is documented from apostolic times and flourished well into the 5th
century. For a variety of reasons, the diaconate then began to be conferred only on those preparing for the
priesthood. The renewal of the diaconate as a permanent order in its own right was called for both by the
Council of Trent and by the Second Vatican Council and implemented by Pope Paul VI in 1967.
A deacon is ordained to a threefold, integrated ministry of service of the Liturgy, Word and Charity/Justice.
• The deacon’s service of the liturgy at Mass, besides proclaiming the Gospel and articulating the
Church’s needs in the general intercessions, includes preparing the gifts, distributing Holy Communion
and, with the approval of the Bishop and his pastor, preaching the homily. The deacon may solemnly
baptize, witness marriages in the name of the Church, bring Viaticum to the dying, and preside over
wakes, funerals and burial services. He may preside over liturgies of the Word, the Liturgy of the Hours
and exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. He may also conduct other prayer services
and administer certain of the Church’s sacramentals.
• The service of the Word includes: offering catechetical instruction, counseling, instructing catechumens,
leading retreats and Scripture study, conducting parish renewal programs and reaching out to alienated
Catholics.
• The deacon is a pre-eminent minister of charity and justice. The service of charity/justice is as extensive
as are human needs. The deacon ministers in prisons and in hospitals. He visits the homebound,
serves the mentally ill, chemically dependent, the abused and battered, the old and the young, the
abandoned, the dying and the bereaved. Since in modern society it is no longer sufficient merely to help
someone in need, a deacon is also involved in social justice and advocacy efforts for a just society.
Currently, there are over 17,000 permanent deacons in the United States and 32,000 worldwide. The first
permanent deacons in the Diocese of Joliet were ordained in 1974. Presently, 218 deacons serve our
diocese in parishes, hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, and wherever the needs of people call for their
ministry.
If you see a deacon, thank them for their service and congratulate them on the many years and gifts they
have shared so generously with us!

BacktotheBasics…WhatWeBelieve
The Beatitudes
The Desire for Happiness
The Beatitudes respond to the natural desire for happiness. This desire is of divine origin: God has
placed it in the human heart in order to draw man to the One who alone can fulfill it:
We all want to live happily; in the whole human race there is no one who does not assent to this
proposition, even before it is fully articulated.
How is it, then, that I seek you, Lord? Since in seeking you, my God, I seek a happy life, let me seek
you so that my soul may live, for my body draws life from my soul and my soul draws life from you.
God alone satisfies.
The Beatitudes reveal the goal of human existence, the ultimate end of human acts: God calls us to
his own beatitude. This vocation is addressed to each individual personally, but also to the Church as
a whole, the new people made up of those who have accepted the promise and live from it in faith.

FEED YOUR SPIRIT
Do you know your family history? The history of the
Church is the story of our family. It is the epic story of
our ancestors in the Faith—the heroic men and
women who shaped civilization and spread the
Gospel throughout the world. Knowing this story is
crucial to our identity as Catholics. Just as we would
uncover exciting and interesting stories of our
ancestors through the study of our family genealogy,
we can uncover our Catholic past through the study
of Church history.
Many in our society misunderstand and even attack
our Church for the supposed misdeeds of the past.
Topics such as the Crusades, the “Inquisition”, and
Galileo are used in an attempt to discredit the Church
and her role in the world. What is the truth concerning
these events and persons? How can you answer the
objections?
Join us for this exciting journey through Church
history and you will:

their spouse about it. This program has helped 10’s of 1000’s of couples experiencing
difficulties in their marriage.
For confidential information, or to register for the Retrouvaille program beginning the
weekend of September 11-13, call 815.351.6968 or email: [email protected].

Become a part of the St. Joseph Music Ministry!
Music making is very important and joyful work here at St. Joseph Church.
Consider joining one of the many ways to praise the Lord with
music and help lead our community’s song!
Men Wanted!
This seems to be the annual plea in many Church bulletins in the fall. And here at St. Joseph
Church, due to job transfers, retirements, family obligations, etc., our parish’s two Sunday morning
choirs are in need of additional men to join the ranks. Each Sunday, there are some incredible
male voices singing out. If you have a talent for singing, bring that voice to our choirs!
Ladies, your talents are also needed, of course! Join us!
St. Joseph Choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm beginning September 15. The
Choir serves as the music ministers for the Sunday 11:00 am liturgy.
St. Joseph Singers and Musicians rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm
beginning September 16. The Singers and Musicians serve as the music ministers for the Sunday
9:00 am liturgy.
The Handbell Choir is in need of additional ringers for the coming year. The bell choir plays
on its own as well as with the vocal choirs of the parish at selected liturgies throughout the year,
averaging once a month. Anyone high school age or older with some music reading ability is
welcome. Training is offered to learn handbell technique before joining the choir. Rehearsals are
Wednesdays from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm beginning September 2.
Instrumentalists
St. Joseph Church is blessed with many wonderful parishioners who serve as instrumentalists. We
currently enjoy the wonderful talents of people who share their talents and play clarinet, flute,
guitar, piano, recorder, sax, violin, and even euphonium! A person who serves as an
instrumentalist needs to be rather proficient since “training” is not provided at the parish level.
To serve in any of these music ministries, please contact Bob Valle at the Parish Center,
630.964.0216, ext. 1209 or email [email protected].
For the handbell choir, contact Bob or our handbell choir
director, Sherrol Shea at [email protected].

September 6
Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by
way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district
of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a
deaf man who had a speech impediment and
begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him
off by himself away from the crowd. He put his
finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched
his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and
groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!”— that is,
“Be opened!” — And immediately the man’s ears
were opened, his speech impediment was
removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them
not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them
not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were
exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has
done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and
the mute speak.”

Another Form of Progress and Development
by Ann O o, Stewardship Director, Diocese of Green Bay, WI
It is not unusual that I have an immediate emoƟonal or spiritual response to something I read. Recently, I
had one such reacƟon when Pope Francis tweeted in June: “A decrease in the pace of produc on and
consump on can at mes give rise to another form of progress and development.” Upon reading those
words, my body relaxed and I felt at peace.
Though Pope Francis’ comment was an insight directed at environmental and human ecology, the
potenƟal outcome of such a decrease overwhelmed me. The thought of living in a world that was not
producƟon or consumpƟon driven immediately created an image in my mind of what taking a step closer
to the Kingdom might look like and it made me happy.
I imagined what we consistently talk about in stewardship becoming more of a reality. It was about
taking Ɵme to receive God’s giŌs gratefully, nurture them responsibly, share them generously and return
them to God in abundance. It was about assessing our lives as followers of Jesus and as members of
humankind. The statement was a call to set prioriƟes that reflect a God-centered way of life and a change
in understanding the definiƟon of power and success.
As a baby boomer, I remember Sundays when the stores were closed and my family would take turns
entertaining or visiƟng our cousins. On beauƟful summer days we might spontaneously gather with our
backyard neighbors (many of them widowed or reƟred) for a picnic. We scavenged our kitchens for ingredients to make a dish to pass around, put our lawn chairs in a circle and spent the day together. It was
simple, but yet some of the most wonderful memories of my childhood.
When I look at my children and grandchildren I would like for progress and development to reflect a
faithful simplicity and generosity. It would be a way of life that honors the earth and humankind. We
would be able to redistribute the world’s resources so no one would go without. In the end, I want my
children and grandchildren not to experience instant graƟficaƟon and great wealth, but to experience
lifelong joy. That would be progress!
