A senior police officer was shot
and killed while his colleague
escaped unhurt in an ambush at
Petanenge village in the early hours
of Sunday.
Lieutenant Yezindaba Meshack
Shikati (54) who was stationed at
Ritavi Police Station died in a hail
of bullets whilst on duty at around
01:40 on Sunday.

said
Lieutenant Shikati and Constable
Carrol Machaba (35) responded to
a complaint at Mabuza Tavern at
Petanenge.
“ON investigation they were
ambushed by two unknown
suspects,” said Mulaudzi.
He said two assailants emerged
from the nearby bushes, one
carrying a rifle and another a
handgun and started shooting
indiscriminately at the two officers,
killing Shikati instantly whilst
Machaba escaped unhurt.
The two gunmen took the officers
official firearms before fleeing the
scene.

blooded killing of Lieutenant
Shikati.
“It is with shock and sadness that I
learned this morning that one of my
dedicated members was shot and
killed. I condemn this heinous act
in the strongest way. Any attack and
the killing of our police officers will
not be tolerated, and I have already
formulated a task team by Hawks
members to apprehend these cold
blooded killers and ensure that
they face the full might of the law.
No stone will be left unturned in
our efforts to establish who was
involved and bring them to book,”
said Masemola.
Masemola said this killing is a
serious concern not only for the
police management, but also for the
community at large.
He urged members of the
community to be vigilant and come
forward with any information that
might lead to the arrest of these
cold-hearted criminals.
He added that police in the
province will not be deterred in
their quest to ensure that all people
in the province are and feel safe, by
these terrible acts.

Truck drivers urged to avoid
Magoebaskloof road
Police are urging drivers of heavy duty
trucks or trucks carrying heavy loads to avoid
or stop using Magoebaskloof road.
This statement followed after yet another
accident in which a 30 year-old man died
after he lost control of his heavily laden truck
.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel
Moatshe Ngoepe said the driver lost control
of the truck on the steep descents of
Magoebaskloof.
Ngoepe called on the heavy duty truck
drivers to please rather use other alternative
roads such as Georges Valley and Mooketsi
when going to Tzaneen, Modjadjiskloof or
Phalaborwa.
“In the last two weeks, we have had three
accidents involving heavy trucks or trucks
transporting heavy loads,” said Ngoepe.
He said the police and emergency personnel
struggled to remove the body of the deceased
and the truck from the scene of the accident.

Man with body parts in
bag appears in court
A Mozambican national who was
allegedly found in possession of human
body parts appeared in the Malamulele
Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Samson Majoko (35) was remanded
in police custody pending further
investigations.
Majoko was arrested at Xipurapureni in
Malamulele last Tuesday evening following
a tip-off from the community.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani
Mulaudzi said they received a tip-off from
members from the community and followed
up information about a man wanting to sell
body parts.
“Police rushed to the scene and found
the suspect sitting in a vehicle. They
searched the vehicle and found a plastic
bag containing private parts and two hands.
The man was arrested,” said Brig Mulaudzi.
Mulaudzi said a specialized team of
detectives was appointed to investigate the
incident, and later on Wednesday managed
to locate a mutilated body.
“The body has been taken to forensics to
determine whether the body parts found
belong to the deceased,” he said.
Majoko was due to re-appear in court at
the time of going to press.
Crime news in brief
Tzaneen: Police in Tzaneen have arrested
62 people for various criminal activities over
the past week.
According to the Tzaneen police
spokesperson, Constable Glenda Maimele,
three people were arrested for assault
common, four for assault with intent to cause
grievous bodily harm, one for possession of
dagga and four for shoplifting.
One person was arrested for fraud, four for
theft, one for housebreaking and theft and
another one person was arrested for house
robbery.
One person was arrested for possession
of housebreaking implements, three for
violation of protection order, one for arson,
one for murder and five people were arrested
for illegal gambling.
Six people were arrested for possession
of counterfeit goods, eight for reckless and
negligent driving, one for drunken driving,
eight for public drinking and nine for
contravening the Road Traffic Act.
Bolobedu: Police in Bolobedu have arrested
64 suspects on various offences over the past
week.
According to the Bolobedu police
spokesperson, Constable Rebotile Shai, four
people were arrested for rapes, two for failure
to comply with maintenance order, five
arrested for assault common and three for
malicious damage to property.
Four people were arrested for housebreaking
and theft, 18 for public drinking and 13 for
illegal gambling.
Two suspects were arrested for Business
robbery, three for drunken driving, one
for theft, one for failing to comply with
maintenance order, one for child neglecting
and three for selling liquor without licence.
Three people were nabbed for possession of
dagga and two for assault with intent to cause
grievous bodily harm.
Haenertsburg: Police in Haenertsburg
have arrested 42 people for various criminal
activities over the past two weeks.
According
to
Haenertsburg
police
spokesperson, Constable Bongi Malungane,
36 people were arrested for contravening the
Road Traffic Act , six for drinking liqour in
public.
Suspected
robber shot
An armed robbery suspect is recovering
in hospital after he was shot and injured by
the man he was trying to rob at Lulekani on
Sunday morning.
According to the police spokesperson,
Colonel Ronel Otto, a 57 year-old tavern
owner closed his business on Sunday at
approximately 02:30 and went to his home.
“Upon his arrival he alighted from his
vehicle to open the gate. Four unknown
suspects approached him and fired shots
while he was opening the gate.
The victim returned fire with his personal
fire-arm and the suspects fled without taking
anything,” said Col Otto.
She said in the process of fleeing, the
suspects dropped a 9mm fire-arm and follow
up investigations revealed that it was an
official SAPS 9mm fire-arm which was robbed
from a member at Hammanskraal a month
ago.
Otto said that further investigations also
led the detectives to the local hospital where
they found a man being treated for a gunshot
wound.
The man is suspected to have sustained
injuries on the abdomen and arm during a
shootout with the tavern owner.
The suspect is being held under police
guard while investigations are continuing.
The search for the other suspects who fled is
continuing.

Grandmother reaches 118 years
Anna Maimela, who we estimate to be at
least 118 years of age, lives in the Village of
Moshakga in Modjadji. She has many many
family members consisting of 6 sons, 1
daughter, 45 grandchildren, 59 great
grandchildren
and

great
gr.
grandchildren. Her oldest son, Solomon is
also alive and well at 95years. A Celebration
was recently held in her honor in Moshakga
on 12 April, 2014,in the very church that she
helped to establish, for the help she has
given to others and the milestone age that she
has reached.
Nancy Hudson came to South Africa with
her husband John in 1989. They lived on a
local farm owned by Isak and Sally Lombard
for several years and ministered to the
residents from the homelands of Modjadji
as well as Mozambican refugees. In 1995
they moved over to the Ga-Kgapane side of
Modjadji to a house at Medingen, where she
still resides.
Nancy established a relationship with
Makobo, the Rain Queen, and visited her
every week and taught her the Bible for many
years. During this time, John and Nancy were
going door to door in Moshakga Village, and
having meetings under a mango tree. They
knew they had to begin building a church
and began looking for suitable land and had
meetings with the Agriculture Department
personnel, who denied their request for
land at Moshakga on her preaching rounds
explaining the love of God, Nancy befriended
Annie Maimela and some of her children and
grandchildren. Nancy knew that the Lord
had sent them to Moshakga to establish a
church,,but the authorities kept refusing to
grant land and said to try another village. One
day, when the two women were discussing
the matter, Annie said,, “You can have my
land”! It is down by the river where I graze my
cattle.” This confirmed the belief in miracles
to the tearful Nancy who immediately asked
the Agricultural Department, to demarcate
the land for a church, this was in 1992. They
quickly erected a plank church and named it
Moshakga Christian Assembly . As it filled
up with converts, they built a brick church
in 1995. This mother church ,has produced
leaders, musicians, Pastors, teachers and
established a feeding program, etc. Sadly,
John fell ill in 1996 and on their return to
the United States, he was diagnosed with
Lymphoma Cancer and went to be with Jesus
in 1997.
Nancy returned to Modjadji where the
church promptly made her their Pastor to
carry on the work. Annie’s generosity, and
sacrificial giving, knowing she had ‘heard from
the Lord”, resulted in the big ministry been
established now known as CASA(Christian
Assemblies of South Africa)Ministries.
There are now 9 churches in the ministry, 5
in the Modjadji area, 2 in the Bellvue area
and 2 in the Giyani area.The Ministry has
a Help a Child and Help a Mother program
with supporters from America, here is also
a Feed the Hungry program comprising of
soup kitchens. They help to rebuild houses
destroyed during storms, they help with
education, school uniforms, speaking to
various local primary and high schools, and
have established 6 preschools in the area.
God is credited with doing it all.
A young man by the name of Jonas
Mangena became a Christian at this time
also at a meeting under the mango tree, and
became a disciple of John learning music
and translating and attending Bible school.
He and his parents and siblings all became
Christians and became very active in the
Ministry. Jonas’s sister, Jeaneth and another
girl, Grace Mohalamalla, from Moshakga
church where he is the Pastor, are now
following Nancy’s lead and have became
missionaries in Malawi.
Pastor Nancy and Pastor Jonas now work
togetheras the General Overseers of CASA.

ANOVA Health Institute hosts a symposium in Mopani

concerning the country’s health system.
ANOVA Health Institute in partnership
with the Department of Health and Social
Development, Aids priorities, PEPFAR and
USAID hosted their 7th annual conference
last Wednesday and Thursday. The theme
of the symposium was “Common grounds
and strategies in the implementation of
health systems strengthening in Mopani”
The objectives of the conference were to :
understand health systems, strengthening
priorities in the country, contextualize
priorities for Mopani, share best practices
in primary health care by re-engineering
implementation, reflect on the use of data
in enhancing ART program performance,
share experiences on innovative methods of
good pharmaceutical practices and supply
chain management, reflect on current topical
health systems challenges, create more
visibility for the ANOVA Health Institute and
last but not least , strengthen the partnership
with the Department of health and Social
Development in the province. They had
several speakers who covered different topics.
Clinical Program Specialist, Dr Remco
Peters gave a presentation on Tuberculosis
(TB). He said according to statistics on the
World Health Organization (WHO) website,
South Africa is third in the world with the
highest TB epidemic. He added that TB
should be given the same preference as HIV
because it also kills. He further said people
need to be taught about the symptoms of TB:
‘Some patients delay going to clinics and some
don’t even know what the symptoms are,
hence the higher number of TB infections.’
He highlighted that elderly people and HIV
positive patients with a low cd4 count are
most at risk.
Whip Mongwe from the Department of
Health in Mopani presented on tier.net
which stands for ‘three integrated electronic
registers’. This software assists data captures
to collect accurate data on HIV illness and
treatment. It is a digital system for keeping
track of HIV patients and can help manage the
virus in the country. The audience was given
the chance to ask questions, make suggestions
or give comments after all the speakers had
given their presentations. Acting Manager of
ANOVA in Mopani, Siyani Marima said the
symposium was a great success. ‘It was well
attended and people really participated . We
achieved what we set out to achieve,’ she said.

The winning choir from Senwamokgope
battled it out against 10 other choirs for
the number one spot. The competition was
organized by the Greater Letaba Municipality
in conjunction with the local Sports, Arts
whilst Betheria Gospel Choir got R3000.
Horizon Choir took home R 1500 third
prize money.The founder and conductor of
the Baswa Ba Tumelo Choir, Maria Machipi
said she formed the choir to keep school
learners busy after school.She said the prize
money will be used to buy uniforms and
for transport.The mayor of Greater Letaba

singing competition is aimed at empowering
local choirs and developing singing skills in
the area.He said the competition is also one
of the events funded by the municipality
with the aim of encouraging the formation of
cultural groups.

on their way in/out of the park”, Mabasa

Letaba School learners never let their
disability stop them from achieving and
making themselves known.
Last Friday the school was handing out
medals, certificates and trophies to the
students who participated in the SA Games
for Disabled Children earlier this year. The
journey started
in February when they participated in
the Wheel Chair Marathon held in George
(Cape Town). Four of their students took
part namely: Rosa Mmola, Karabo Mashale,
Cedric Ratabala and Katlego Kanwane.
They brought home one bronze medal, two
silver medals and one gold medal. In March
another group took part in the 2014 Nedbank
National Championships for the physically
disabled held at Stellenbosch in the Western
Cape. They participated in three disciplines:
goal ball, 7-aside soccer and athletics. In the
goal ball category they achieved very well
and were only knocked out in the semi-final .
They took position no 5 in the 7-aside soccer
category and in athletics they excelled, taking
home a total of 28 medals, three bronze, 12
silver and 13 gold. Tebogo Malatji participated
in soccer, while Amukelani Makhubela,
Jessica Maapulela, Certina Mashapa, Rachel
Selopyane and Mahlatse Malatjie took part
in the athletics. Both Rachel and Mahlatse
were the top achievers, Mahlatse got silver
for 100m, gold for 200m, gold for shotput and gold for javelin. Rachel got gold for
100m and gold for 200m. In April the top
achievers attended the Department of Sports,
Arts and Culture Awards at Bolivia Lodge
in Polokwane. They were rewarded for their
hard work by the minister, Fikile Mbalula.
They received trophies, small food packages,
medals, certificates and blazers. Rachel was
announced the sportswoman of the year
2013/14 season and Mahlatse sportsman
of the year 2013/14. The team manager and
coach Elizabeth Shikwambana said she is very
proud of her team.

Sports teams, individuals, and an institution
were honoured for their outstanding
performance and contribution to farm sport
competitions and sport development in
Mopani District at Kgapane on Saturday.
Mokgoba netball and ladies soccer teams
received trophies for being the best farm
sporting teams in the district.
Letaba Estate received a trophy for the best
farm soccer team in the district whilst Robert
Malatji of Modjadjiskloof was awarded for
being the best farm sport organizer.
The Greater Letaba Municipality got
a trophy for being the best organized
municipality in terms of sport development.
Thakgalane volleyball team received the
best volleyball team in the district award.
Team coach, Peter Legodi said four players
from Thakgalane have been included in the
provincial team to represent the province in
the inter-provincial tournament in Seshego
from July 4 to 12.
The Department of Sport, Arts and
Culture’s coordinator of farm sport and club
development in Mopani, Risimati Malungane
said the purpose of the awards is to motivate
and encourage the recipients to work harder.

Tables turn in Premier and
Super divisions of KLG league
The tables were turned in both the
Premier and Super divisions of the Kaizer
Letsoalo Games (KLG) Soccer League after
last weekend’s results.
This followed yet another array of
incredible matches at various grounds in
different communities in this area.
The change of guard at the top of the
respective divisions has intrigued the
thousands of staunch followers of this
massive league.
In the Premier division, Golden Aces
leapfrogged the inactive Manamela Naughty
Boys after a deserved 3-1 victory over
Hotbeans. In the Super division, Moime
Liverpool finally dislodged Mmaphala
Peter United from the summit after beating
the stubborn Rakoma 3-2 at the Rakoma
ground.
The Mmaphala Peter United troops
hackneyed themselves when they bitterly
drew 2-2 with Carling after squandering a
comfortable 2-0 lead. It now appears that
from all the in the top 8 bracket of the Super
division, it is only Mmaphala United that
failed to bag maximum points last weekend.
The most shocking outcome was the 9-3
loss by Royal Celtic to the rampant side of
Real Madrid. This loss effectively dragged
Royal Celtic in the unfavourable zone of
relegation. Surprising news in the Premier
division is just how Khopho All Stars and
Mogoboya Junior Chiefs revived their
campaigns to challenge for the honours.
