A 79 year old man burnt to death on
Thursday night at Homu 14A section
in Giyani after his house was set on fire
by rampaging residents in a witchcraft
related attack.
The angry residents accused the elderly man, Tarazeta Mathebula and his
relatives of practicing witchcraft.
They accused Mathebula and his
relatives of bewitching Mathebula's
son who died recently in hospital.
Provincial police spokesperson,
Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said three huts and a three bed
roomed house were gutted by fire.
"The deceased's 55 year old sister-in-law sustained serious injuries
after been assaulted by enraged community members," Ramatseba said.
She has been admitted in hospital.
Mathebula's wife, five children and
two grandchildren managed to flee the
scene unharmed.
Seven suspects including men and
women aged between 24 and 46 have
been arrested in connection with the
incidents and will appear before the
Giyani Magistrate's Court soon facing
charges of murder, attempted murder,
public violence and arson.
Ramatseba said incidents of community members taking the law into
their own hands has become a serious
concern in the province.
"Several incidents of vigilantism
where properties were destroyed and
people injured, were reportedly committed.
Community members are therefore
urged not to take the law into their own
hands but to rather contact the police,"
he said.

Man kills himself after shooting wife
A 47 year old man shot and injured his wife
before turning the gun on himself at their home
at Joppie village on Monday afternoon.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant
Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the man shot
himself in the head and died instantly.
The woman was rushed to Letaba Hospital
where she is receiving treatment.
It is alleged the couple had marital problems.
"The firearm used has been confiscated.
Preliminary police investigations reveal that
the firearm used was reported stolen in Alexandra, Gauteng in August 2007. It is not yet
established if the firearm was used in other
criminal activities," said Ramatseba.
The deceased has been identified as Alli

Businessman arrested,
vehicles impounded
A local businessman, Thabo Nonyane, was arrested on Friday for possession of the suspected
stolen property. A Tipper truck that was impounded by the Phalaborwa police following the
arrest of Nonyane.
A
well-known
businessman,
Thabo
Nonyane, was arrested by Phalaborwa police
on Friday for allegedly possessing stolen
vehicles to the value of R900 000.
This after it surfaced that one of his vehicles,
a BMW, was reported stolen in Kempton Park
last year and that the chassis number did not
correspond with the car's registration number.
The BMW was impounded by the Namakgale Police earlier this month. During the
investigations into Nonyane's vehicles, police
also discovered that his Toyota Legend 40 was
reported stolen at the Olifantsfontein police
station while a Tipper truck in his possession
was allegedly hijacked in Soshanguve.
The truck and the Toyota have since been
impounded.
It is however not clear how Nonyane ended
up being in possession of the suspected stolen
property.
Phalaborwa Police Spokesperson, Sergeant
Malesela Makgopa, said Nonyane appeared in
the Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court on
Monday.
The case has been postponed to Friday for
formal bail application.
Nonyane is in the sand delivery business at
Majeje outside Namakgale. Police investigations continue.
Hijack suspects arrest at Nwa'mitwa
Two suspects were arrested at N’wamitwa on
Saturday morning in connection with a case of
hijacking.
It is reported a 56 year old man from Marironi
village was hijacked of his Toyota Hilux bakkie
in Tzaneen on Thursday at about 18:00.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant
Mohale Ramatseba said it was reported the
victim was driving from Tzaneen to Marironi
village when he offered two suspects aged 20
and 30 a lift.
"The two men then pulled out a gun and a
knife on the driver and his female passenger.
"The driver was tied up with a rope and
forced onto the back of the bakkie while the
woman sat in the front with the hijackers. The
men then drove towards N’wamitwa ," said
Ramatseba.
The woman spotted a police car and distracted the driver, causing the bakkie to swerve
and attract the attention of the police
The suspects then fled on foot.
The victims were then rescued and the
vehicle was recovered without any damage.
The suspects were arrested on Saturday after
an intensive search.
The suspects were expected to appear before

Test station charges
struck off roll
The fraud case against the
Phalaborwa Private Testing Station staff was struck off the roll
recently.
The Phalaborwa Magistrate’s
Court applied section 342A which
stipulates that the case cannot be
reinstated without instruction
from the Director for Public Prosecution.
A case of fraud and corruption
had been opened against the three
officials, Madeleine Venter, Anneline
Tayler,
and
Steven
Sekokotla, attached to the
Phalaborwa Private Vehicle Testing Station.
They were arrested last year for
allegedly issuing roadworthy certificates to motor vehicles without
testing them in contravention of
National Road Traffic Act of 1996,
(93 of 1996).
According to the Department of
Roads and Transport, the alleged
fraud cost the department immensely.
The then Limpopo MEC for
Roads and Transport, Pinky
Kekana, had approved the suspension of the registration of
Phalaborwa Private Vehicle Testing Station from the eNaTIS after
the Anti-Fraud and Corruption as
well as Transport Administration
and Licensing Directorates undertook an investigation following
allegations that the station was
issuing certificates of roadworthiness without testing vehicles.
Due to this ruling in court, this
could not be proven.
Tayler, the station owner, confirmed that the testing station has
been sold to a new owner and the
station will be operational from
the end of the month.

300 Bursaries up for grabs
While black chartered accountants remain
so much scarcer than their white counterparts,
the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) is working tirelessly to
transform the profession.
As part of its transformation goals, the
institute is offering 300 bursaries to qualifying
African and Coloured Grade 12 learners who
wish to pursue a career as a Chartered Accountant [CA(SA)] but don't have the money
to do so.
Aspiring CA(SA) students must have
achieved outstanding Grade 11 results and
should have a minimum of 60% in mathematics (5 or above on the NSC scale of
Achievement), not maths literacy.
The closing date for applications is 30 April
2012.
One of SAICA's prime goals is to strengthen
the country's economy by playing a significant and leading role in transformation and
skills development.
Through its transformation initiatives
namely the Thuthuka Bursary Fund (TBF) and
Thuthuka Education Upliftment Fund (TEUF),
SAICA plans to transform the demographics of
the profession to reflect those of the country in
terms of race and gender.
One such beneficiary of the fund Kim Jacobs
from Toekomsrus, East of Johannesburg is one
of the youngest of three children raised by her
single mother and the first member of her
family to go to university. Her brother was the
sole breadwinner and started working immediately after high school, although his
dream was to study finance and banking but
he postponed his dream so that he could take
care of the family.
Jacobs is just one of over 1000
Thuthuka-funded university students who are
currently studying towards qualifying as
chartered accountants [CAs(SA)].
Eight hundred and four of these students are
undergraduates and over 200 are at honours
level.
Tasked with boosting the numbers of black
CAs(SA), Thuthuka is a holistic programme
designed to nurture promising African and
Coloured students from high school, through
university, their workplace training and, ultimately, to prepare them for their qualifying
examinations towards becoming CAs(SA).
"This is not just money paid over to the
students. We address the student's broader
lifestyle needs via a comprehensive programme and work with the students as a
group," says Nthato Selebi, Project Director of
SAICA's Thuthuka Bursary Fund.
"When a TBF student gets to a SAICA
accredited university they will be covered for
textbooks, their accommodation in residence
and meals. TBF students are also given extra
classes, tutorials, mentoring, life skills training, workplace readiness and any other
non-academic support they might need on
their path to becoming a CA(SA)," Selebi goes
on to explain.
He stresses that it is imperative that learners
are aware that maths literacy is not accepted or
recognised when applying for a Thuthuka
bursary, but that core mathematics is. Universities also generally require any learner
intending to study a B Com accounting degree
to have mathematics as a matric subject.
Selebi points out that the TBF has proven
itself as an effective solution to addressing the
skills shortage in the country. Evidence of such
effectiveness is reflected in the remarkable
success of the first seven years of implementation.
Grade 12 learners are encouraged to send a
request for an application form, together with
their grade 11 results and their postal address

Talented Merren Damezulu Sabela will
showcase his beautiful artwork at Hoedspruit
Frames next Thursday.
The 46 year old artist from Nwa'mitwa
outside Tzaneen started painting and drawing
at high school and has fell in love with art ever
since.
"At high school my classmates loved my
work and that's when my love for visual art
grew. Its really good and fulfilling when people
love and appreciate what you do," says Sabela
who is also a teacher.
Sabela can paint and draw just about anything, including amongst others portraits, animals, birds and flowers.
After discovering that he had artistic skills,
Sabela enrolled at Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg in 1988 where he received visual
art training.
After graduating, he put his skills to the test
by teaching some of his learners how to draw
and paint.
"After school I would paint and draw as
much as possible, preparing for exhibitions I
was invited to," he says.
His first major exhibition was in 1994 at
Northern Development Corporation in Venda
where he obtained second position. The following year he claimed first prize at the same
exhibition.
He also exhibited his work at the Hampton
Parkridge to hope Exhibition & Polokwane
Regional Exhibition, Collaboration Ivo Artist
for Sasol Signatures and also at the Solo
Exhibition: Gallery on the Square in Sandton.
He says some of the challenges he is faced
with include finding buyers for his work and art
material.
"I mostly sell my work at exhibitions.

Exciting Kaizer Letsoalo Games league matches this weekend
This weekend is bound to be yet another
exciting one for the Kaizer Letsoalo Games
(KLG) Soccer League supporters.
The weekend also marks the return to league
action by the newly-crowned champions of
the KLG Easter Tournament, Mogoboya Junior
Chiefs.
On Saturday, GP United welcome Rakoma
at Lephepane ground while a tough battle is
expected at Mapantsula ground when top
teams Khopho All Stars and Royal Celtic lock
horns.
Mogoboya Junior Chiefs travel to the Manamela ground for an encounter with Manamela Naughty Boys whilst Mamogalefa will
be hopeful when they take a short trip to the
Khujwana ground for a date with Real Madrid.
Monatic will play host to the log leaders,
Golden Aces, at the Thlabine ground whilst
Sefika will welcome Mapantsula at Mpaleng
ground.
On Sunday, Phafogang Young Vultures and
Barcelona will confront each other at the
Mapantsula ground in a bottom of the log table
clash while at the Manamela ground
Dub-Root come up against GP United.
Rakoma will entertain the inconsistent side
of Khujwana Classic at the Ga-Rakoma ground
while Tzaneen Pick 'n Pay will play host to
Hotbeans at the Meridean College sports
ground in Nkowankowa.
Lubs and Long Valley are expected to meet
at the Ramoba ground whilst Sparks will fly at
the Mosoroni ground when Mothopong troops
descend there for a fierce battle with Carling.
Royal Celtic will do serious battle with Real
Madrid at the Mpaleng ground.
A mouth watering fixture will be the encounter between Mogoboya Junior Chiefs and
Khopho All Stars billed for the Moruleng,
Rasebalane ground on Sunday. Besides the
fact that this clash involves league title contenders, both sides met in the finals of the KLG
Easter Tournament where Mogoboya Junior
Chiefs won by a good 2-0 scoreline to lift the
trophy. So, it can be expected that Khopho All
Stars will be looking at nothing less than
maximum points to boost their ego.

MOPANI NEWS - Friday 20 April 2012
Stars move to
4th position
Khopho All Stars moved to the fourth position on the Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG)
Soccer League log standings following a 2-1
win over the neighbouring Phafogang Young
Vultures by at Mapantsula ground on Saturday.
All Stars, who lost 2-0 to Mogoboya Junior
Chiefs in the finals of KLG Easter Tournament
on Easter Sunday, are currently fourth on the
log table with 21 points accumulated from 10
games.
In other matches, Manamela Naughty Boys
were held to a 1-1 draw by Mapantsula in a
pulsating clash played to a capacity crowd at
Manamela ground. Jackson Makwela scored
for Manamela Naughty Boys, while Ngwako
Malatji netted for Mapantsula.
Lephepane Rovers collected maximum
points after thrashing Dub-Root 3-0 at the
Soccer City, Lephepane ground. A brace by
John Mathole and a goal by Jim Vuma sealed
the match for the hosts. Mothopong went on a
4-0 scoring rampage when they hosted the
neighbouring Lubs at Mothopong ground.
Sarel Mailula and Isaac Mailula each netted a
brace.
The match between Sefika and Monatic
ended in a two-all stalemate at Mpaleng
ground. Lesiba Shai secured the brace for
Sefika, whereas Meshack Leseilane and Prince
Leseilane each scored for Monatic.
In another match played at Matimu ground,
Khujwana Classic beat arch rivals Real Madrid
by a close 2-1 score. This was a sweet revenge
for the Classic players who were painfully
eliminated by Real Madrid in the first round of
the KLG Easter Tournament via penalties.
On Sunday, the struggling Mamogalefa registered a shock 2-0 victory over the fancied
Classic at the Topanama ground. Louis Mathye
and Dengi Mokoni went into the score sheet as
the hosts did the business on the day.
GP United suffered yet another defeat when
they welcomed Manamela Naughty Boys at
the Soccer City. Phineas Morerwa netted a
brace, while Lerato Letsoalo and Matome
Motloutsi added to the tally to give the visitors
a 4-1 victory. The one goal for GP United was

Peter Malematja pulled one back for Mapantsula.
Long Valley and Tzaneen Pick 'n Pay shared
the spoils at the Long Valley ground after a 1-1
stalemate. Masilo Mangena and Venter
Shingange respectively scored for Long Valley
and Tzaneen Pick 'n Pay. In their second game
of the weekend, Khopho All Stars were merciless in their encounter with the struggling
side of Barcelona at the Mapantsula ground.
Nyandoro Magoro scored a brace, Rio
Machethe netted a hat trick, while Peter Makwela and Lefty Makwela added to the tally to
give Khopho All Stars a deserved 7-3 result.
The goals for Barcelona were netted by Kabelo
Selane, Kabelo Letsoalo and Mphosho Seshoka.
In other clashes played on Sunday, Golden
Aces maintained their leadership in the log
standings when they narrowly beat Carling 2-1
at the Nyekhetlha ground. Elsewhere at the
Topanama ground, hosts Hotbeans punished
the visiting Rakoma by a solid 3-0 scoreline.
Meanwhile, Golden Aces appeared before
the disciplinary committee of KLG on Sunday
where they faced charges relating to players'
and spectator misbehaviour during the KLG
Easter Tournament. In addition to the R800 fine
imposed, the team has been suspended from
all KLG competitions, except the league, until
December next year.
"Our ruling is motivated by the fact that we
are a community development organisation,
and thus cannot build a community if we do
not tackle ill-discipline, violence and insults by
our affiliates," said the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, Khombo Vuma.
Khopho All Stars beat Phafogang Young Vultures 2-1 the Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG) Soccer
League match at Mapantsula ground on Saturday.
