Canning giant leaves M’kloof
MODJADJISKLOOF’s economy will most
likely take a knock with the relocation of the
Tiger Brands canned tomato plant to Musina
and Boksburg.
200 Seasonal workers and 50 permanent
workers will be left unemployed by the move,
according to the Greater Letaba Municipality
(GLM).
The company announced their intention of
moving the factory in December 2012 and
entered into consultations with the employees
and the union involved.
’After the municipality was informed that
Tiger Brands was closing down, the mayor
scheduled meetings with the management. He
was concerned about the issue as it is one of the
companies which contributes greatly to our
economy,’ said Lovers Maenetje, GLM communications officer.
‘As a consequence of increasing raw material costs and other cost inflation such as
energy and fuel, including the costs of transporting tomatoes to the Modjadjiskloof area,
we were obliged to seek supply chain cost
efficiencies which would allow us to deliver
against our quality and pricing objectives,’ said
Alex Mathole, Tiger Brands corporate affairs
group executive in a statement on Monday.
According to Maenetje, Tiger Brands will
relocate 40 of the 90 permanent staff members
with the canning plant.

A 40-year-old woman was arrested for cultivation of dagga at
Sunnyside Village in the Maake
area on Thursday.
According to the Maake police
spokesperson, Constable Mpho
Seroto, the suspect was arrested
after the police spotted the dagga
plantation in her yard while

town.

electric and water problems led to the relocation of the factory as well as labour law
changes and an agreement between the government and China to import goods at a special

because the GLM did not have the funding.
Tiger Brands also built their own water
purification plant and invested in generators to
overcome service delivery issues according to
Willemse.
’Among other things that they indicated
contributed to the relocation was the mortuary,
scrap yard, and timber yard which are just next
to their factory,’ said Maenetje.
’The municipality is deeply saddened by
their departure and feel that we could have
done more, but unfortunately, it was out of our
hands. Their leaving had nothing to do with
electricity or any other matter that has to do
with service delivery,’ Maenetje said.
’Tiger Brands made a commitment to funding
economically viable ventures that would benefit the affected employees as well as the
community of Modjadjiskloof,’ said Mathole.
Parties, including the GLM, are still discussing options.

No bail for toddler rapist

A 29-year-old man suspected of raping a
two-year-old girl was denied bail by the Naphuno Magistrate's Court in Maake outside
Tzaneen on Tuesday.
The suspect, David Sekgobela, allegedly
abducted the little girl and took her in to the
bushes where he raped her and left her for dead
at Pulaneng Village two weeks ago.
The child was severely injured and spent a
week at Mankweng Hospital after the ordeal.
She is now recovering at home.
Sekgobela fled to Gauteng after the brutal
rape but the police traced him to a flat in
Yeoville where he was arrested on Saturday.
The provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the suspect,
who was a friend of the victim's father, was
remanded in police custody.
Community members, some carrying little
girls of the same age as the victim, protested
outside the court and demanded the suspect be
denied bail.
Brig. Mulaudzi thanked the angry community member who protested outside the
court for not disturbing the court proceedings.
Earlier in the saga, outraged community
members burned down the rapist’s father’s
house after the suspect fled to Gauteng.
Police have opened a case of arson but no
arrests have yet been made.
The provincial police Commissioner Lt-Gen
Simon Mpembe warned people not to take the
law into their own hands.
A large crowd protested outside the court on
Tuesday again where Sekgobela was expected
to make his second appearance.

Woman accused of witchcraft survives house fire
A 68-year-old woman accused of witchcraft
survived a house fire after a mob set her home
in Makhwibidung Village in the Maake area,
alight.
Tzaneen Cluster police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said a group
of unknown people attacked the woman while
she was sleeping at around 02:00 on Modnay
morning, before setting fire to her house with
her still inside.
'Some community members managed to
rescue the woman and get her out of the house.
She suffered burns but she is recovering well in
hospital.
'The estimated damage to the building is
over R10 000 and no arrests have been made at

A 22-year-old mother was charged with
child negligence after her one-year-old son
burned to death inside a house at Ga-Matshwi
on Sunday.
According to the Tzaneen Cluster police
spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe
Ngoepe, the woman left her two sons, aged
one and three, alone at the house at around
18:00 and went out.
'The house caught fire and the one-year-old
burned to death while the three-year-old managed to escape uninjured,' said Ngoepe.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and
police are investigating.
The young mother is expected to appear in
the Bolobedu Magistrate's Court soon.

28 cattle still unclaimed
Letsitele police are looking for the owner of
the 28 Bonsmara cattle which were found at
Taganashoek in Tarentaalrand in January.
According to Letsitele police spokesperson,
Constable Reoh Mabunda, the animals were
spotted by a farmer at Letebele Farm in January
20.
'We have tried to trace the owner since
January but no one has come forward to report
stolen or missing cattle,' said Mabunda.

Ritavi police arrested 66 people for various
criminal activities over the past week.
According to the Ritavi police spokesperson,
Constable Vongani Ngobeni, 13 people were
arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, four for common assault, four
common robbery and housebreaking.
Four people were arrested for theft, three for
rape, four for housebreaking and theft, three for
possession of firearm and ammunition and one
for possession of suspected stolen property.
One person was arrested for theft of a motor
vehicle, 17 for public drinking, two for possession of dangerous
weapon, one for possession of dagga and
eight for contravening the Road Traffic
Act.

Tzaneen police arrested 135 people for
various criminal activities over the past week.
According to the Tzaneen police spokesperson, Constable Kedibone Seale, one person
was arrested for rape, one for attempted rape,
two for murder, four for housebreaking and
theft, two for common robbery and three for
driving under the influence of alcohol.
Nine people were arrested for assault with
intent to cause grievous bodily harm, five for
common assault, two for fraud, one for malicious damage to property, one for pointing at
someone with a firearm and three for theft.
Nine people were arrested for shoplifting,
two for possession of scanning device, 32 for
contravening the Road Traffic Act, 33 for
prostitution and 13 for public drinking.
Four people were arrested for illegal trading,
two for illegal gambling, one for trespassing,
one for contravening the Immigration Act and
seven for drunkenness.

Letsitele police arrested 50 people for various criminal activities over the past week.
According to the Letsitele police spokesperson, Constable Reoh Mabunda, 14 people
were arrested for contravening the Liquor Act,
one for murder, two business robbery, one for
rape, one for animal cruelty and one for
pointing someone out as a witch.
Twelve people were arrested for illegal
gambling, one for possession of dagga, 15 for
contravening the Road Traffic Act and two for
assault with intent to cause grievous bodily
harm.
HAENERTSBURG
Haenertsburg police arrested eight people
for various criminal activities over the past
week.
Four people were arrested for public drinking and four people for contravening the Road
Traffic Act.

ANC open new offices in Tzaneen
The newly built ANC Mopani regional offices Norman Mashabane House was officially opened in Tzaneen on Saturday.
The three-storey modern building named
after the late ANC stalwart and former South
African ambassador to Indonesia Norman
Mashabane who died in a car accident in
October 2007 was officially opened by Cassel
Mathale, the provincial chairperson of the
ANC and Premier of Limpopo.
According to the ANC chairperson in the
Mopani region, Joshua Matlou, the new offices built with donation to the ruling party by
business people will be used by the branches
to strengthen the organisation.

Awarding of tenders in the spotlight

Capacity constrains in the Greater Letaba
Municipality (GLM)'s supply chain management unit is one of the reasons that the
municipality awarded contracts to tender bidders who did not qualify.
This was indicated by the GLM manager,
Glory Mashaba during the public hearing on
the Annual Report for the 2011/2012 financial
year at Kgapane Community Hall on
Thursday.
According to the chairperson of the Mu-
nicipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC),
Jeffrey Baloyi, the public hearing was organised by the MPAC in order for the municipal manager as the accounting officer, to
make public responses on any questions
posed by the MPAC.
The questions were based on the findings by
the Auditor General.
The GLM improved from an adverse outcome in the 2010/2011 financial year to a
qualified audit opinion in 2011/2012
The Auditor General (AG) was dissatisfied
with the awarding of tender and contracts.
According to the AG report, contracts were
awarded to bidders based on the performance
points that were not calculated in accordance
with the requirement of the preferential procurement policy framework.
The report indicates that tenders were awarded to providers whose directors are persons
in the service of government, in contravention
of the requirements of supply chain management regulation.
Furthermore suppliers failed to declare that
they were employed by government. Persons
in service of the municipality, whose close
family members had private or business interests in contract awarded by the municipality, also failed to disclose such interest.
Mashaba in response to this said there were
constrains in the supply chain management
unit but since they have appointed the assistant director, things have been going well.
'All pieces of legislation were adhered to in
the awarding of tenders to date in the
2012/2013 financial year,' said Mashaba.

Jazz lovers mesmerized
The annual Marula Festival ended on a high
note on Saturday at Impala Park Stadium when
thousands of people danced to the jazz tunes,
while others enjoyed drinking Marula beer.
The eighth Marula Festival stretched for nine
days, with three various music genres, it began
on March 1 with kwaito followed by gospel the
following day and ended with the most popular, the jazz festival.
Premier Cassel Mathale, Deputy Minister of
Tourism, Thokozile Xasa and MEC for
Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Pinky Kekana
seemed to have enjoyed themselves, since
they danced throughout the evening.
Event organiser for Ziyaphenduka Promotions, Bruce Kgapane expressed his satisfaction of the total turnout of the event. ‘From
now on the festival will be in this fashion, I was
happy with the well behaved people of
Phalaborwa and I'm still looking forward to
working with them,' said Kgapane.
The event was to symbolically mark the first
fruit and also to market and promote the
marula products through different participating Small Micro Medium Enterprises
(SMME's), Small Enterprise Development
agency (SEDA) and cooperatives.
It was also meant to celebrate the wealth and
diverse heritage of the inhabitants of the
province with the promise of the significant
growth in the tourism sector.
A variety of products were displayed at
different stalls at the festival.
Innocentia Mabasa of Phalaborwa said it's
sad that they have to wait another year for a
joyous event like this. 'The festival brought
people together, I was happy to see my friend
and family from as far as Swaziland. The
atmosphere was great,' said Mabasa.
The event featured popular band Stimela,
musicians Caiphus Semenya and his wife Letta
Mbuli, Ringo Madlingozi, Colbert Mukwevho,
Joe Shirimani, Mooca and Basadi Women of
Jazz. They all mesmerised the crowd with their
performances.

desks to Seboye High School in Lenyenye last
Wednesday.
The damaged desks were repaired by a local
businessman and a former learner at the school
after he was approached by Matlou to help.

upped their game to register a win over
Kgapane Development in a Bolobedu Progressive Football Association league match at
Kgapane Stadium on Saturday.
Boitumelo Mohale scored the winning goal
for Mokwasele Young Fighter.
Impala Boys whipped Castle Stars 3-1 at
Sekgothi Village on Saturday. Clearans Masia
netted two goals and Abel Ngobeni the third
one to secure a win of 3-1 for Impala Boys
